    As an autistic kid, I genuinely cried watching this. The only autistic representation I had when I was younger (I'm 16 now) was people like Sheldon Cooper who were often disliked or admonished for being different, rather than accepted.

    • @lsmmoore1
      @lsmmoore1 ปีที่แล้ว

      And the ones who are accepted - aren't named as autistic. Sure, some of them might be so autistic coded there's no way they could be otherwise (i.e. Lilo from Lilo and Stitch, whose autistic lines are not limited to those that would be associated with trauma), but they aren't named as such.

    That clip with Bruno was almost exactly a conversation I had a couple days ago. I find it odd that Bruno wasn't yelled at for telling a joke at an inappropriate time. I guess the show is trying to teach good behavior and acceptance.

      I figure it is. Educational shows for little kids do that a lot - they show the one character's mistake and show everyone else handling the mistake well. That can be true even when the mistake is something like lying. Exceptions often involve the adult stepping in and doing that legwork (and are sometimes used when interpersonal conflict needs to be shown, like they did in Dragon Tales, a show which would definitely have an autistic character by now if it were still running and had some autistic-like behaviors as it was).

      Yelling is never ever an appropriate response to telling a joke at an inappropriate time. People might do it because they are overwhelmed with the situation they're in and struggling with their own emotions. The other train here remained quiet and very clearly stated what the problem was, which definitely is far more beneficial for autistic children (a joke can be funny but sometimes it's not the right moment) AND other people watching (you can say a joke is told not in the right moment without screaming).

    Hi Paige.
    Thank you so much for your beautiful feedback on Bruno--and for the personal shout-out! It's been one of the great joys of my life to help Mattel develop this momentous character. I especially appreciate how Mattel gave us free range to really challenge preconceptions, such as the clip you showed where we destroyed the dangerous notion that Autistic folks don't have empathy.
    Media representation is so important to those of us in the Autistic community, and there are so few non-stereotypical portrayals, so I'm so glad you find him to be so accurate to our shared experience.
    Also, Elliott Garcia is, indeed, Autistic.

      Hi! I'm an autistic mom of an autistic 5 year old son. I gotta share something about him that I normally wouldn't, but Mom to Mom & in a space where I'm pretty sure someone that eventually sees this will relate... His most joyful dreams are about being a Thomas train. Not Thomas or anyone else, he's still himself. Just, he's now a Thomas-style train... I've been watching him laugh in his sleep for years, and this summer I found out that's what it always is, every time he wakes up super happy he's been doing train stuff with cool train bros 😭♥️
      I had to tell you that first, because it's hard to accurately type about how seriously major this is for him (and for me... And probably for all of us here!) Thank you for helping your son share his talent, & in this amazing way. I'm sure there's a mom or dad a lot like me in every city, they also didn't think their child could be any more excited about Thomas stuff than they already are in general... And along came the boy who brought life to Bruno 😁🥳 cheesy as it may be, it really means a lot to him that a boy who's so much like him can BE a train, & roll with the Sodor crew. We are excited to have this surprise chance to express the love & gratitude we have for ur son's work in this extremely important role on this show, right to "Bruno's mom" herself

    I've been a Thomas fan for a while now, and for me, the introduction of Bruno is a mixed bag. A lot of what I have seen of the character is good, and I'm also glad Mattel decided to partner with ASAN and not a group like Autism $peaks. However, many Thomas fans will tell you they're not a fan of the All Engines Go reboot, and I am among that camp.
    For the most part, the model and even the CGI series were very much rooted in railway realism. (Unless you count the time Thomas's firebox was on fire...) It usually also had a calm and lyrical tone. Even the soft reboot that proceeded All Engines Go (Big World, Big Adventures) still felt like Thomas at the end of the day. But All Engines Go changes it into a fast-paced, more cartoony version of the show, no different from PAW Patrol or other modern-day Toddler Fodder. It seems like a cash grab from the corporate interests at Mattel, is a shell of the former show, and even the creator of the TV series (Britt Allcroft) has said she doesn't really like this new direction for the show. Not to mention it makes a mockery of the source material (The Railway Series books by the Rev. Wilbert Awdry).
    When I first heard about the creation of Bruno, nothing was released yet, and I thought it would just be another example of a token autistic character. After reading more about it and watching the first episode featuring Bruno (the one you showed the clip of here), the more I grew to like Bruno as a character. I agree that it was handled very well, and even my worst fears weren't realized with Bruno. I have no gripes with the character of Bruno himself outside of the fact that is from All Engines Go. Now, I sincerely hope they keep working with these organizations and not jeopardize their image of autism by working with problematic organizations, like another children's show did after they created an autistic character... (***cough-cough*** Sesame Street ***cough-cough***)
    P.S. -- I figured I should let you know that the UK voice of Bruno (Elliot Garcia) is, in fact, autistic. So, both English dubs of the show do feature autistic actors. @@LeslieG5 Yes, but not right away. Like Mattel here, Sesame Workshop partnered with ASAN at first when creating Julia. Years later, they were planning to work with Autism $peaks over some informative pamphlet about autism featuring Julia. Their partners at ASAN warned them about some dangerous misinformation that was going to be presented in the documents and that it would harm autistic people. Sesame Workshop didn't listen and went through with the partnership with that hate organization anyway. As a result, ASAN ended its partnership with Sesame Workshop. What I was trying to say is that I hope Mattel does NOT go down this path with Bruno. Sorry if that didn't come across that clear.

      Based on the clip shown, I cringed a little when I saw a brake car just casually jump the tracks to have a chat with the engine. The realistic constraints that came from using model trains created interesting limitations that needed creative solutions that simply won't come up in this format. There are ways this scene could have been done to overcome the practical problem of having and engine and brake car facing different directions still manage to have a conversation in a way that would make sense but this style avoids that issue entirely. While that is fine if the focus is on the story and the medium just needs to get out of the way. I think part of the appeal of the original format though was that a child on an actual train can easily perceive the trains they see each day as connected to that world and having complex relationships with each other. It brings the fiction into the real world in a way that doesn't really work with highly stylized cartoon versions.
      Also, thank you for the update on Elliot Garcia and the source link! Stylistic concerns aside, I'm very excited about the new show and the realistic representation of an autistic character even in the absence of realistic depictions of trains.

      And that would also help detract from folks like Elon Musk using the bad autism representation to boost autism cred and excuse being bad people (because frankly, Elon Musk, while he doesn't behave much like most real autistic people, behaves a lot like the poorly represented characters out there, like the guy from Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time, or another I ran across who was coded and not named but was just as bad a form of representation).

      @Ryan yes i think we don’t hear about the other way round as much because this generation has so much more available in terms of autism resources and support (thankfully!) so often a parent will get their own diagnosis after helping their child through the process. in our case though my autism affected me differently before and after pregnancy. my sensory issues became unbearable following childbirth - i had severe light and sound sensitivity, and that’s how i finally got my own proper diagnosis. so now i have tinted eyeglasses and need to wear ear protection sometimes, but that’s very easy to do. as far as our relationship, we are best friends, it comes so naturally to connect with your own child. babies don’t judge. :) he’s teaching me loads, he will drag me straight up to a crowd to meet all the other toddlers and it’s just hilarious how different we are - i often joke to the other parents like, i was never this social, i don’t know what to do!!

    I was so in love with trains in 1st grade but it was limited to shouting out what the different cars were and did at train stops lol. I’m sure it would have become a full scale obsession if someone ever bought me a train set but apparently no one thought about that. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’m okay though, to not be the train girl. I still appreciate them.
    Bruno and his adorable little boy voice are amazing. I never watched the show as a kid and neither did my kid. I do like the new, non creepy design. I think if that had been what the show looked like before then I would have definitely watched it with my kiddo.

    Despite me despising AEG, Mattel made a very bold decision by including an autistic character into the series. There are also theories out there about how characters like Duck The Great Western Engine and Merlin The Invisible Engine are considered to be autistic themselves. Both characters are from the original run of Thomas with Duck being from the classic model era of the show you and I would’ve grown up with and Merlin being from the cgi era before AEG began.

    Hey Paige, loved the video! I would love your take on other autistic representation in tv shows, it could become a series? The most well known shows with an autistic main character must be atypical and the good doctor. Both are not played by actually autistic actors and I'm not sure what to think of them. They do raise awareness that autism exists and that autistic people are human and special in a good way, but I feel for both like not many autistic people were consulted and more like a list of symptoms is written into the charachters instead of considering whats behind it.
    Two female autistic charachters i love are sara in young roayals and quinnie in heartbreak high, both played by autistic actresses!
    And there is also a new show called the extraordinary attorney woo about an autistic lawyer which i thought was odd but i havent watched much. (Actress not autistic)

      Well I’m so happy you feel represented in this new stylized reboot of the original show! However, though I don’t mean to stomp on your interests in any regard, I’d like to bring up the fact that this reboot has been met with a lot of criticism from older Thomas and Friends fans for being just like every other children’s cartoon of bright colors and cartoony visuals. I am a part of this group but Bruno has left me pleasantly surprised at what Mattel has done.

    • @ModelTrainMvrco
      @ModelTrainMvrco ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Here’s your info dump if you’d like: People, like me and the generation that grew up with the classic series that used real model trains on real, physical train sets, enjoyed the show for how set in reality it was. It was unlike ANYTHING in children’s media at the time and before it ended, always was a stand-out. Children’s cartoons are so focused on colors, simplicity, or high action and cartoonish effect to keep a child’s attention. Thomas and Friends was different because it never tried to be anything epic, awesome, over-stimulating, or soft. It was about a working railway with steam engines who so happened to be sentient. The realism that influenced stories and plot points is what made Thomas and Friends so magical, it felt so real. As a kid, I thought the Island of Sodor was a real place you could visit and when real life seeped into the stories, it only felt even more believable. The show never talked down to the child’s intelligence and played with comprehensive themes. They weren’t *just* trains, they felt like industrial steam locomotives who just HAPPENED to be sentient, each with their own personalities and world they reside in.

      @@ModelTrainMvrco don’t apologize at all! That is so interesting, I was never a fan of the show but I can absolutely understand the feeling of enjoying shows that were more grounded in reality, I’m an animal person (was an animal kid) and even as a kid I’d rather watch a documentary showing animals being animals than a colorful cartoon about or with animals. I don’t know if it’s a neurodiverse thing but I definitely have a craving for the tactile, and can see how taking away the model aspect and changing this to a bright cartoon, while cuter to some, strips that tactile realism and turns it into just another cartoon. I think Bruno’s adorable, but can see how someone would be put off by that cute-ening. Thank you for sharing!

    I really like Bruno in All Engines Go and it’s a nice change of pace from the cartoonish, childish nature of the reboot and I wish a fan could somehow fit him in the Model Series timeline because I think he would work better with characters like Toad The Breakvan or Toby The Tram Engine who doesn’t appear in the reboot because now every episode has to be about Thomas in some way. I do recommend watching the first five seasons of Thomas as it was a great show and not just for kids which is why All Engines Go is so terrible because on it’s own the reboot might as well be just another kids show with nothing special or unique with the exception of Bruno!

    Personally, I'm not too fond of All Engines Go, but I will say that introducing Bruno was a great move the show has made. If only he could've existed in Thomas during my childhood because I could've really needed a character like him on TV in the late 90s and early 2000s.
    I say this because I was diagnosed with Asperger's when I was four and the adults in my life, teachers included, were terrible at approaching my needs, especially as a teenager that didn't come out as LGBT until I was 18.
    It got worse in high school because I got bullied bad when the Sandy Hook and Isla Vista shootings were in the news because the shooters had either AS or high functioning autism. I wasn't out yet nor had any role models to look up to that were autistic. Even to this day I have a hard time being open about having autism due to the trauma.
    Thankfully things will be much better for my three year old niece because she can look up to characters like Bruno and I hope movies and TV can give us more positive and accepting depictions of characters on the autism spectrum. I just hope her teachers will be more informed and accepting towards her needs.

    I don’t fully agree, that we can’t hire non autistic people to play autistic people. We don’t hire people with cancer or actual mental health disorders for roles. Someone can absolutely portray and accurate portrayal of an autistic person without being autistic. People who may have gone with an autistic loved one, I’m sure of it. I think Hollywood should strive to do it, but I don’t think they necessarily always have to.

The description of Bruno break car sounds fairly great I just hope that this character gets a strong consistent supporting role to main character status in the show. I’m happy about how the character development, implantation and autistic research is being handled. For me I would love for Mattel to duplicate all this and incorporate everything into the brand MonsterHigh and it’s media as well as an official character ( hopefully with Ghoulia Yelps; a zombie that was non verbal and possibly on the spectrum in the original era, I’m unsure how her full character personality has developed for this new generation of MonsterHigh and it’s Nickelodeon show or any movies).
