3:40 I once had a psychologist tell me I should say I'm "A person with bisexual" and instead of saying that I'm tall, I'm suppose to say I'm "A person with a height advantage"
I have to disagree with you on the superpowers thing. As a person with ADHD and ASD, I find it pressuring and sometimes a backhanded comment for people to call my special interests and abilities superpowers. I appreciate it as a way of encouraging kids with disabilities to be themselves, but sometimes it feels borderline like calling us inhuman, and a huge misunderstanding at some points. For example, I have ADHD and it makes me hyper and hard to focus, when people call my hyperfocusing a superpower it really makes me uncomfortable cause, a. Hyperfocusing is something that can be done without ADHD it requires alot of paitience b. I usually hyperfocus when my body tires itself out or gets bored and needs something to entertain itself I think it's good to highlight the good parts of Autism and ADHD, but if we also focus on just that, it just plays into respectability politics and glamorizes disabilities without acknowledging the real world struggles it has economically, socially, and well physically and mentally. Don't get me wrong, I understand the whole "next hierachy of human beings," is a joke and a way to uplift the community, I just hope people don't take the wrong route and completely miss the point. Anyway great analysis and video!!
I agree with your idea that the greatest minds were autistic, because disabled people are just as capable of contributing to society as abled people, but I also feel that plays into respectability politics because what about the autistic people who aren't smart? I feel like that point would have had a greater impact if you went into how many autistic people lack in this field, sometimes socially, economically, mentally, etc. I think we have to move away from what we can bring to the table and focus that success is more then just money or "being there and being an inspiration for others" or even academically. We're people, I believe we need to be seen as the ability to do multiple things and struggle with things and still live our lives not cause of our disabilities but because we are people, like everyone else.
Yes thank you!!!! Couldn't have thought how to express how I felt about that but you did it. It's a very fine line in my eyes between special needs and super powers, both came from the same idea originally!
As a former “gifted kid” I find it annoying cause it implies we don’t need help or support. I was told my whole life I’m too smart to have issues or how I don’t need help, I can do it cause I’m so smart.
Sooo, the person who created ABA, the therapy that's most commonly pushed on autistic children, was LITERALLY created by the same man who invented conversion therapy.
Yep he also said autistic people aren’t really people. And electroshock therapy is still used in ABA clinics to this day which have resulted in multiple deaths per year of autistic children
They now claim ABA is better and is not like conversion therapy. Probably cause they no longer use overt or physical punishment. But if you look at what CAMH Toronto has done to gender diverse children, that's the exact same shit and still conversion therapy. Though they say: we prefer to call it helping children accept their biological gender.
My sister (autistic) is in the middle of her PhD in engineering. My dad (autistic) worked as an engineer on the channel tunnel. My sister's partner (autistic) runs a peer support charity for autists by autists. We are just as likely to contribute to advancing society as neurotypical people.
But did he say otherwise? I could well have missed something but I took that part of the message to clearly mean it doesn't matter if we do those things (not that we can't), cos that's great and I'm happy for your family but I will never be able to achieve anything like that because of my disabilities, and that shouldn't matter it shouldn't be relevant to anything. I heard it as people who won't be "successful" in the stereotypical way are still successful human beings and members of society whether they can get a PhD or make money or not. Cos all the focus on that again and again, If that stuff matters so much what happens to all us useless people who can't do it?
@@j_g9724 why not a quote or some further info? "Yes he did, no he didn't" etc are what I call "nothing" comments, because they don't actually offer anything, whats the point?
George Carlin would be rolling in his grave over “people with autism” lol. Even in the early 2000s he was talking about how people are afraid of the word disabled like it was dirty or bad. Man was way ahead of his time
I always hate the idea that people who know what’s up were “ahead of their time”. He would still be “ahead of his time” today if he was still alive. When can “the time” be NOW?
He’s now deleted all the comments pointing out that the organization is bad. It’s so upsetting that he’s saying he’s “trying to help us” but at the same time silencing us.
Honestly, I am kinda okay with blaming them for this. It is most certainly their fault that they did not include autistic people or celebrities in the discussion, they didn't research the group that they were supporting, and they just didn't listen to what the autistic community has been talking about for years. While all of them do seem well intentioned, intention means nothing when this will literally hurt people. Even though it seems like he's trying, even without the charity he went with, the video still leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I'm getting sick and tired of ignorance being an excuse, it's time they got their stuff together and listened to the autistic community for once.
This is very much how I feel about it. Both in general and specifically right now. The recent backlash against Sia’s disastrous film was public enough that Rober and his associates don’t really have an excuse for ignorance here.
There are autistic celebrities on the level of some of the people Rober has recruited for the stream, like Anthony Hopkins and Tim Burton (Burton is just speculated to be on the spectrum but still), and they didn’t even think to ask any of them. I’d rather hear from them than Adam Sandler or Jimmy Kimmel

Its really hard to offend me. But trying to "trying to cure Autism" is something that pisses me off so hard. Especially when I finally started thinking more positive about myself and realizing having Autism isn't a bad thing.
Sure, autism isn’t a bad thing for people with minor cases who are capable of functioning independently. But what about men with Rett syndrome, who are constantly on the brink of death? What about people with low-functioning autism or Down syndrome? Those aren’t people who are simply different, but crippled. For them, it would be more like restoring to blind people their sight. For them, a cure may indeed be beneficial as long as it isn’t imposed upon them without consent.
@@primevaltimes I'm talking about Autism not any of those other things. Also when I say "not a bad thing" When I'm talking about it being a "bad thing" I mean it more like something that makes me bad, something that needs to be cured. It wasn't until seeing these kinds of videos did I realize its not true. I mean Autism is technically a disability. It does slow you down. But to try and cure it low or in many different neurodivergent people it would make you a different person. Its in the name "neurological". By trying to "cure" it, you would change their brain and while you would have the same body, you wouldn't be you. Our brains is what makes us, who we are. Change our brain and we wouldn't be the same. Sure, it would make things a lot better. But, you wouldn't be the same person. Also, while I am considered "higher functioning" I am still much slower when it comes to learning. I still have to deal with sensory overload which is ironic because by writing this may but some people into that state so not everyone has to read this. On top of that, I still have to deal with sensory issues, noise, bright light and especially temperature. I could go on, but you get the point. Point is, Autism and all other neurodivergent people would technically be better off without it. But, they wouldn't be the same. So, I guess I was wrong in claiming this isn't a problem. But, its not something that makes us a worse person.
He never ever said he was trying to cure autism. He is just trying to help autistic adults be self sufficient. He also specifically says that autistic people make the world better. Not “cured” autistic, just themselves just as they are.

(BTW this is while having strong sensory sensitivities, multiple shutdowns, selective mutism, depression, anxiety along with the amazing benefits of hyper focus, a love of learning, a completely different perspective, a strong inquisitive mind, a talent for pattern recognition and systems design) Oh and I also managed a team of 5 people and a budget of $33m for four years. So... I exist to inspire others, is that it?
Watch the video.🙄 He never said autistic people can't or won't accomplish the things you've accomplished. He says even if they don't, alot of people with special needs leave the world net positive and THAT is a beautiful thing and should be equally celebrated. He points out that success is not defined by money, MBA, PhD, etc. but that success is leaving the world net positive.
@@FitgirlDancer I have, many times. He strongly implies via the rhetorical device he uses i.e. "they may never xyz, but" This device is commonly used to imply that as a group xyz will not happen. For example, you may say "strawberry ice cream may never pair well with cookie dough chunks or pieces of nougat, but I like it anyway". When we look in detail at the entire video -- which does not include any autistic adults, does not feature any autistic person speaking for themself including his son, promotes the disability trope as the people "bring joy" and by omission nothing else -- we can see a systematic portrayal of autistics and other disabilities as monolithic and infantilised. Have a look at the #colorthespectrum hashtag, there are many other great autistic analyses alongside @PrincessAspien's and mine.

Girl, I have to give it to you. I’ve watched both your channel and Mark Rober’s channel every so often for years and enjoyed both. I saw that specific Mark Rober video before this one and it warmed my heart; I’m not autistic myself and I’m not very educated concerning autism, and so the red flags completely went over my head. I came here to watch this because I was surprised at the thumbnail, and you unraveled every single bit of Mark’s video for me in front of my eyes... you’ve taught me so much more about autism and the movements concerning it in twenty minutes than I’ve known my entire life. The way that you have so many values off the top of your head and that you can articulate them so clearly blows my mind. I can’t imagine what it’s like to be so morally driven, so thoughtful, so kind and intelligent and passionate- but you’re making me aspire to be those things. In twenty minutes, you’ve just become such a huge role model, you don’t even know. 🥺 I feel like I have so much more to say to you, but I don’t know how to word it. For now, I really want to thank you for this genuine reaction video that was able to educate me so, so much. I think I’m gonna share this with a few friends because the message is so important. Thank you for being the wonderfully caring and bubbly individual that you are. Keep on being a legend ☺️❤️
Definitely. As an autistic advocate I personally would be very upset if someone referred to me as having autism because I would feel lessened just for being me. Its very important to always default to "autistic".
@@junipersr Im autistic myself and I think that itself has the same kind of roots. When you call someone autistic or refer to them as autists it could feel like that is being used as the only defining property. You are autistic, but you also are so much more. To emphasize that the phrase that you 'have autism' got into fashion. It's the same with disabilities. Calling someone 'disabled' is inherently negative, so certain 'disabled' people got annoyed by it. And then we use terms like 'special needs', 'differently abled', etc. But inevitably, whenever a new term becomes currency, a movement will start to just 'call the thing by it's name and stop beating around the bush'. The main thing is that basically every term seems to become offensive at some point in time.
This is so disappointing. I have been watching mark rober for three years and I never expected him to do something like that. I hope he educates himself and makes sure to cancel this plan.
As far as I know he is yet to respond to any of the people literally screaming at him to change the charity. It's been so many days and it's really disheartening :/
@@H_is_devious The problem lies with the charity, not the fact that he's trying to raise money to help autistic people. Basically the charity he's partnering with supports ABA therapy and looks for a "cure" for autism. You can look more into ABA therapy if you want, but it's basically it's just causing trauma in autistic kids through abuse until they stop showing autistic traits. It's really bad.

My 7th grade math teacher once said that a person who is wearing a cast has special needs and that it is indicative of it (I’m pretty sure this is correct.).
This made me cry - especially when you started talking about first person language. Autism is who I am - not something I have that I need to be rid of. Thank you for this, Chloe!
I’m so disappointed in his choice in charity. The video had such a good message and he has such a large platform so it’s spreading. But dear god the charity is gonna hurt so many people.
When I saw Mark's video I felt like something didn't quite sit right with me. It was making me uncomfortable but I couldn't quite put my finger on what that was to express it at the time. I also dismissed my feelings at first since no one seemed to be pointing anything out in the comment section (it was all NT people crying because omg so inspirational such a great parent), but it kept bothering me. Mark seemed to have good intentions with the video, it just felt a bit too inspiration porn-esque and could've used a viewpoint or two from autistic people themselves. I'm just so tired of hearing autism being always spoken about from the point of view of parents, siblings, family members, partners etc, almost always concentrating on smaller children. I wondered if I was just over-reacting, but you helped me put my worries into words. Thanks! I don't know much about American charities and stuff (other than that Autism Speaks is bad) so thanks for the info on Next for Autism! So disappointing that Mark and the peeps are supporting something like that, I really hope they change the charity. I hope more people and bigger channels would talk about this so something could be done, instead of NTs ignoring us yet again and speaking over autistic people.
He posted a photo on his community tab about the video and that felt off to me too. I hadn’t seen the video yet but just the way he titled that post and the photo just seemed... weird. I ignored my feelings as well because I like Mark ad I was hoping I was just reading things wrong.
Special needs was the politically correct way to say disabled when I was growing up. Personally I am happy that disabled is the preferred term. I totally agree with you regarding person first language, I have been told that I should use person first language to remind myself that I am more than my disability and that I shouldn't define myself by it.
@@DeathnoteBB That is my point, professionals have been taught to use person first language in all circumstances as you are viewing the person as a person first and then their disability (that they are more than their disability). At the time I didn't have my autism diagnosis, they were talking about different mental illnesses that I was diagnosed/misdiagnosed with. Point still stands though, if you look at a video that any creator has done on person first v identity first language you will see all these comments from people saying that they were taught that they had to use person first language. It doesn't seem like there is a nuanced conversation around it (as they don't know that some communities prefer identity first language) just that it is the correct way to speak.
My best friend in uni is autistic, and she is one of the top students in our university. This is her second degree, and if she wanted to do a PhD she would be so capable. I get that he was trying to show that even if you aren't able to do things that are usually celebrated disabled people are super valuable, but it also very falsely implies that if you are disabled/have high support needs, you can't do any of these things. Never knew how bad next for autism is- thanks for letting us know (I certainly won't be donating now)
It also makes it sound like our only true inherent value is to bring allistic folk joy… Like no Mark, we’re not your loyal court jester or inspiration poster you look at with pity to appreciate how “great” your life is. Our inherent value is you know, being a human person like everyone else?
Mark is an engineering youtuber, I used to look up to him being an aspiring engineer myself, this one hit me close to home right here. Also good job moving quickly Chloe, you went from an ig post probing about the video idea to posting a video insanely quickly perfectly cut scream of “NOOOO” then ad It’s great knowing multi millions of dollars will go towards forcing autistics into their shell the same way I was/did. Millions of dollars going towards giving people like me PTSD and Depression.
That's what confused me, I don't think I had been in an engineering class with an autistic person. Not only that some of the best engineers I know are autistic. With that in mind how does he have that closed view that Autistic can't walk on mars. (I understand not all autistic are good at math and science I just happen to be myself and its what is around me, and there is plenty around me)
I was hoping for this video I noticed there was a lot of flaws in the video and i didn't want the wrong message to be sent but no one was saying anything.
I told my uncle my husband is Autistic and he told me he was worried he was going to be a burden for me...eh, why?! If anything I'm the burden. He's freaking amazing, he's the love of my life, and I love my Autistic husband. I also got very angry and sent him a huge list of Autistic successful people so he sees how many of those idols are actually Autistic.
I love what you are saying about this. I also think that Mark saying that autistic people don't need to achieve the greatest feets to have a purpose was good. He's acknowledged that a lot of people either think of autistic people as incapable humans or extremely smart people with savant syndrome (e.g. rain man) and he is just trying to say that they can do other things as well. Thousands of our smartest minds have been people with disabilities and autism but not every autistic person has those same skills. E.g. Mark Rober's son's friend could recite the day of the week for any date, but Mark's son couldn't. This doesn't mean he's any less of a successful and important person.
Most autistic people actually lie in the middle and have an intelligence in the normal range, just like most people in general. They're just not as exciting as the super intelligent or the mentally challenged, so you don't see a lot about them in the media.
I was so excited to watch someone as big as Mark Rober support the disabled community because over this quarentine I've been trying to learn about disabilities more. I agree, i think we totally should discuss terminology and deeper messages with openly and rationally but not criticise the people for every minor language nuance, if there is conflict within the community on what language we like prefer that means we can't talk about it like this video, as though there is a distinct right and wrong. It's so freakin cool 😭 You get to experience the world in a way we never will understand. Why is that such a bad thing? Why isn't this celebrated? 😔
I'm feeling your frustration Chloe, these people really need to know better! I'm so grateful for your voice and perspective. Please look after yourself this continual dreadful behaviour is tiring...
This broke my heart. I love him and when I saw his video I loved him more; but to find that Mark has failed in this way brought me low. Thank you for sharing your voice and your mind with us all. I am in your debt. PEACE
This video is very informative and really did help clear up a lot of things about autism for me. I avoided Mark Rober’s video since I just had a bad feeling about it (famous people can be... eh about things sometimes). I’m also glad to hear from the comment section that a lot of people pulled out from this after hearing about the charity. The fact that Mark seems to be going through with it is still not good and is really upsetting honestly. I really hope videos like this and general outcry can diminish the harm that will come out of this but I don’t know. Thank you for making this video.
I originally reacted and shared my reaction, but since deleted it... I feel pretty duped honestly because I didn't know enough about the fundraiser. (I am autistic, adhd, spd) I feel like the only video that ever got any views was my reaction video and it was blowing up, but because it supports A$, I had to delete it and it just really hurts because up until now I really liked marked and enjoyed all of his videos. I really wanted to like his video, but it just crushed me to find out what organization it was supporting. I build stuff on my channel frequently and it never gets seen, but a reaction video about something like that, gets 1k in a couple days? :(
After donating to the fund raiser lead by Mark Rover ( as I deeply get a sense of integrity and goodness in him) and watching your video in which I see and hear you aligned with a core truth, I extend a wish from my heart that sees autistic people congregate and organise themselves to design and implement their own support system and solutions. I do believe that the pool of brilliant minds that autistic people represents have all the means to create a great space and place for themselves alongside, and if they so wish to, in collaboration with the non disabled crowd. I encourage you to continue using your voice and spreading it and joining forces into an organized activism with like minded people where you get to design your future. Much blessings to you Chloé
Aaaa that scene in the park felt painfull:/. My senses are a bit to sensetive today because i have had a busy one and a half week so im realy glad that at my new job we don't have alot of loud noises and that i have a pair of safety headphones for if i need them:). I hope if they choose to they are able to switch to a better organisation:/.
In order for me to hear this properly I put the playback on this video at .75. She is one fast talker and she has so much good stuff to say! Much respect to you Princess Aspien.
I'm only 3 minutes and 20 seconds in, and I can already tell I'm going to love this video. No one ever mentions the whole thing over "I have autism" and "I'm autistic." I've seen people even say that calling someone autistic is rude and that saying they have autism instead is correct? like what? I personally never saw much of a difference, I can say both, they're interchangeable. But if I had to pick one, definitely "I'm autistic." It's part of who you are, it just means you process things differently, not that you have a disease that needs to be fixed!! needed to be addressed more by people and I'm glad you mentioned it! yeah this is all I wanted to rant about haha gonna watch the rest now oh forgot to say im autistic you probably already figured that out but yh edit: love the way you explained this and I am definitely going to steal that explanation in the future to my non-autistic friends :D
I'm a teacher to autistic kids, and I agree... they are spectacular... and warm and funny (even intentionally) and creative and imaginative. It's an honour to work with the students I do even though it is really rough at times. Not because they are autistic... but because I might be too. A lot of sensory and social overwhelm in this professional. But a tonne of magic. Also... I think "special needs" kids are magical 100%. I've seen it first hand. Pure magic. ❤❤❤
I 100% agree with you on the way neurotypical people try to act like our disabilities are superpowers. I have ADHD, and get so annoyed with people comparing it to a superpower. I know it's done with good intentions, but it usually comes across as condescending.
Chloe, My advice since this Mark Robert is better person than I thought because he does love his Son, maybe you contact him personally and tell him everything that you said in this video about the Evil group Autism Speaks and that other group that are hate groups against people who are Autistic!! You can tell him to that a follower of yours, which is me, has a former Boyfriend from my L,D, high school class who is Autistic and is now a psychologist with a PhD and my former Boyfriend told me that when he was in kindergarten his kindergarten teacher told his mother that he "would never amount to anything",which as you can see is absolute bull!! And I do agree with you Chloe that our success should not be based on how much money we make or what we do or do not do, however disabled people should not exist to make others happy or for anyone's amusement! In addition to this, it is interesting that you said that Stephen Colbert is one of the contributors. Stephen Colbert is an American comedian that I personally watch on television! Maybe you should try to contact Stephen Colbert and get on his show via Zoom or via FaceTime! Since covid-19 is not fully under control in the United States, you'd have to go on Stephen Colbert show via video. Stephen Colbert is a good person from what I've seen and therefore I think might be fair to you. Chloe I think you need to get out there publicly like you are doing now and educate some of these bigwigs! You have the acting skills and experience on social media that I think you can help stop this evil group from hurting other people!! God bless all you do Chloe and for helping me to understand so much more!
Unfortunately multiple well known advocates have shared this message with Mark personally and on Twitter for the last few days. He has not responded. I recommend you comment on his video and go like and retweet on Twitter and other social media to amplify these voices.
Hello, I am Elly, I am on my brother's account currently, but anywho, I myself am a child with ADD, and whenever someone ask me if I took my pills, (I have to take both attention and anxiety pills,) I usually either say yes, or go take them, but sometimes people call my pills medicine. When people call my pills medicine, it makes me feel like I'm sick with something, like ADD is some disease that I was just unlucky enough to be born with. So when you said that Autism is just what it is, and that people don't need to call it, "Special Needs", I felt like I related to that in a way, because when people call my pills, "medicine", it makes me want to tell them how they make me feel when they say that. Thank you for ponting this out, you are wonderful, goodbye!
as of 17:00 in the video, although I have autism, the point of fundraising, etc. should be for the increased acceptance and awareness of Autism and how it interacts in society, NOT forcing us to work, etc. if we don't have the capacity to stand it; and in the education of people on the spectrum, modifying the curriculum to account for our learning style, slow uptake of information, etc. what an Autistics' purpose in life is: "to advance the acceptance of autism in the community, reduce the chance of bullying and the stigmas of this condition on the next generation, and in short a legacy of smoothing the road ahead for the next generation"
I was under the impression that NEXT for autism was a good organization because it funds resources connecting autistic people with jobs. If that's not a good organization, I'd love to know which ARE good organizations that connect autistic adults with jobs. Not looking for a fight. Looking for resources. (Side note, if people know resources that are specific for Canadians that would be even cooler)
@Queen queen Between the four organizations listed, two organizations were specific to teens and younger kids, and the other two had information about transitioning to adulthood and advocating for accommodations and equality. What I'm looking for are resources for work. I am an educated autistic adult in my mid-twenties struggling to find work and I feel left out by these organizations.
I SO AGREE! when you said that mark said that neurodivergent people can't do the same things neurotypical can just shook me. Mark should know that neurodivergent are still human! We are still a part of this world no matter what and should be treated the same as everyone else! It's not fair that so many of us on the spectrum are not treated fairly and it's time that people like Mark understand that and do something about it because us on the spectrum can't necessarily do it ourselves without the resources/help that we need in order to accomplish that! :) #ActuallyAutistic #DisabilityRightsAreHumanRights
My wife has Diabetes (Type 1, CANNOT be taken away, CANNOT be cured, has had it almost all her life), and she does not like to be called a "diabetic". She does not want that to be associated with her identity. My point is, people view themselves in different ways. We should be open first and judge second. We don't know what language his son prefers (probably the language of love, which I'm sure his dad gives him). People so easily look for the bad in peoples words rather than the good.
I personally see nothing wrong with using the phrase "I have autism" or "I have ADHD" or whatever it may be. We also say "I have blue eyes." English is weird I would give people grace.
"Have autism" is used to separate people from the disability so they can be seen as people like everyone else. At the same time if the disability is how your brain works and a part of your identity, only being perceived as a person when seperate from that is similar to saying unless you're like me I don't see you as a person. I am autistic because that is part of what makes me me, if you see me as a person only when I "have" it, like an add on I can leave behind, you don't see ME as a person. Almost all autistic people who say they "have autism" say it because that was what they were told was correct according to neurotypical people. The vast majority of autistics, and all the well educated on the autistic community autistics would not use person first language. I believe in second chances with stuff like this, if someone is told that they should default to "autistic" after saying someone "has autism" and they are are happy to listen and learn, as well as to improve they're language, I'm happy. I've had people though who completely reject the idea and they deeply hurt and offend me, anyone who isn't willing to start defaulting to "autistic" once educated, is being ableist and is being offensive.
Honestly I wish there was a way to say I have ADHD in a way that is more intrinsic to me like the wording I am autistic because my ADHD is intrinsically me
Didn't Chloe literally said it's because autism shapes them as race shapes a person? Having blue eyes doesn't, I am honestly flabbergasted by this comparison.
You put into words SO much of what I've been thinking about his video. I've been planning on making a video on this too ((despite not doing this sort of thing usually)) bc I feel like the more autistic people talking about the issues here, the better. You were so so compassionate in this video!! And up until a few hours ago I was feeling the same way, I understood Mark's perspective and could tell he was just an ill-informed parent with his heart in the right place, and with a lot of genuine love for his son the way he is. I really had hope that all of our conversations and responses would make him understand and reconsider the organisation for the fundraiser. I had faith in him! However. Earlier tonight I saw on twitter that on April 20th he'd posted a new thing around 4 or 5 days after his video was posted. It was continuing in the support of Next for Autism, and despite people like Colleen, Jacksepticeye, and Rhett and link all being able to see our criticisms and change their minds about supporting it, Mark doesn't seem to be trying to do the same. If they can see what we're saying, then so can he, and he's choosing to ignore us. What made this MUCH WORSE was I noticed on instagram that he had posted within the hour! Tonight! The same post as on twitter, but now on April 22, another couple days later. He's also LITERALLY deleting any comments by autistic people that show any sort of opposition towards the whole thing. I then wrote a very respectful and fair comment getting my point across about how we aren't trying to attack him or his son, and that we just want for him to change the organisation and acknowledge that he messed up. And guess what! My comment got removed WITHIN TEN MINUTES. It was pretty much instantaneous, and the only comments left visible are positive ones. I originally had lots of empathy for Mark. He seems to genuinely love and care for his son, and has good intensions. I held out hope. BUT. He's been silent about this since the video's release, hasn't ONCE acknowledged ANY of the criticism from autistic people, he's continuing to push for Next for Autism and is flat out ignoring our uproar, and now he's ACTIVELY SILENCING US when we DO speak out. WTF. You are silencing the very people you claim to support and "represent". From these actions, I get an impression that he feels like bc his son is autistic, he can't be wrong. Well I'm sorry sir, but when ACTUALLY AUTISTIC PEOPLE are telling you that you've fucked up, MAYBE LISTEN???? Anyway idk. I want to keep some hope alive in me, but after tonight my opinions on Mark have changed quite a lot. It really struck a nerve in me to see he's been deleting every autistic person's negative comments. That was kinda the final straw for me. But this was a really great video Chloe, and thank you so so much for starting that petition!! Seeing all those signatures really lifts my spirits after all this bullcrap. And sorry for the long comment
one of the problems i have with this video is that he included the demonstration of a sensory overload with no tw at all. it almost sent me into an overstimulation episode and it's not ok that he didn't give any heads up.
Thanks for educating me, I’m sad I couldn’t find this earlier. You are very beautiful and seem like a wonderful person as well! P.s. I love your intro art and music.
3:40 I once had a psychologist tell me I should say I'm "A person with bisexual" and instead of saying that I'm tall, I'm suppose to say I'm "A person with a height advantage"
"a person with bisexual" I-, that sounds so wack in so many ways. Helps put it into perspective.
Lmaooo
What?! Lol omg that psychologist should not be working, that is so bizarre
That’s like saying to short people ‘A person who is vertically challenged’
that doesn't make any senses what ?
I have to disagree with you on the superpowers thing. As a person with ADHD and ASD, I find it pressuring and sometimes a backhanded comment for people to call my special interests and abilities superpowers. I appreciate it as a way of encouraging kids with disabilities to be themselves, but sometimes it feels borderline like calling us inhuman, and a huge misunderstanding at some points. For example, I have ADHD and it makes me hyper and hard to focus, when people call my hyperfocusing a superpower it really makes me uncomfortable cause,
a. Hyperfocusing is something that can be done without ADHD it requires alot of paitience
b. I usually hyperfocus when my body tires itself out or gets bored and needs something to entertain itself
I think it's good to highlight the good parts of Autism and ADHD, but if we also focus on just that, it just plays into respectability politics and glamorizes disabilities without acknowledging the real world struggles it has economically, socially, and well physically and mentally.
Yeah. That was actually one of the only things that threw me off when watching Mark's video for the first time.
All of these conditions are just made up BS so everyone can feel special. Not being able to focus is not a condition. You are just a person.
So upset a SBSK clip was included in his video without our permission 😠.
Please try and reach out to him about it! Maybe someone can get through...

As a gay autistic man, likening Autism speaks to conversion therapy puts it into perspective for me. I didn't fully understand how bad they were.
Sooo, the person who created ABA, the therapy that's most commonly pushed on autistic children, was LITERALLY created by the same man who invented conversion therapy.
@@RingTheBella yup! I hate that this isn’t common knowledge!! 🙃
Yep he also said autistic people aren’t really people. And electroshock therapy is still used in ABA clinics to this day which have resulted in multiple deaths per year of autistic children
@@Ava-km7tl Upvoted because people NEED to know that.

I always hate the idea that people who know what’s up were “ahead of their time”. He would still be “ahead of his time” today if he was still alive. When can “the time” be NOW?

Its really hard to offend me. But trying to "trying to cure Autism" is something that pisses me off so hard. Especially when I finally started thinking more positive about myself and realizing having Autism isn't a bad thing.
Same here or when people try to “cure my asexually. “
@@thelindymckay Look into Next for autism and their ally Autism Speaks. Then hear (and listen to) what autistic people have to say about these organizations and the trauma they developed as a result of ABA therapy
Yep, I'm autistic, have a BA, an MBA, and am currently working toward a PhD in neuroscience. So... Mark ...what couldn't we do as autistic people? (BTW this is while having strong sensory sensitivities, multiple shutdowns, selective mutism, depression, anxiety along with the amazing benefits of hyper focus, a love of learning, a completely different perspective, a strong inquisitive mind, a talent for pattern recognition and systems design) Oh and I also managed a team of 5 people and a budget of $33m for four years. So... I exist to inspire others, is that it?
Watch the video.🙄 He never said autistic people can't or won't accomplish the things you've accomplished. @@FitgirlDancer I have, many times. He strongly implies via the rhetorical device he uses i.e. "they may never xyz, but" This device is commonly used to imply that as a group xyz will not happen. When we look in detail at the entire video -- which does not include any autistic adults, does not feature any autistic person speaking for themself including his son, promotes the disability trope as the people "bring joy" and by omission nothing else -- we can see a systematic portrayal of autistics and other disabilities as monolithic and infantilised. this is so disappointing. i love a lot of the celebrities they mentioned and i know that this doesn't make them horrible people but they NEED to do their research. ignorance is no longer an acceptable excuse. also, i did hear a lot of people dropped out but as far as I have seen they didn't make any apologies or use their platforms to help educate people on why they were wrong/ why they dropped out. this would be a PERFECT opportunity for these people to raise awareness but it doesn't seem like any of them are going to use it :(
Exactly. @Ryan Larkin excuse me? I have diagnosed ADHD? It's not self diagnosed? I show traits of autism and always have but pursuing diagnosis can be lengthy and my ADHD symptoms are what I struggle with the most. I am not self diagnosing, which is why I said I have traits and not 'i have autism'.
@Ryan Larkin and ADHD really limits me, bane of my existence
Note: research has proven that generally autistic males actually like the repetition, where females tend to avoid it or do not focus on it. This is also the reason why autism in males is generally found quicker, as they require more repetitive routines etc.
*This does not mean some autistic females do not require repetition, it mainly means most do not.
I feel like I have so much more to say to you, but I don’t know how to word it. For now, I really want to thank you for this genuine reaction video that was able to educate me so, so much. I think I’m gonna share this with a few friends because the message is so important. Thank you for being the wonderfully caring and bubbly individual that you are. Keep on being a legend ☺️❤️
That's what autism is, we are not typically self driven
As an educator, this video is interesting because we are literally taught to use person-first language, special needs, etc 🤯
Same. I had such high hopes.
As far as I know he is yet to respond to any of the people literally screaming at him to change the charity. It's been so many days and it's really disheartening :/
What he do wrong tho he just raised 800k for a autism charity or sum
@@H_is_devious The problem lies with the charity, not the fact that he's trying to raise money to help autistic people. Basically the charity he's partnering with supports ABA therapy and looks for a "cure" for autism. You can look more into ABA therapy if you want, but it's basically it's just causing trauma in autistic kids through abuse until they stop showing autistic traits. It's really bad.
@@H_is_devious here’s an idea: watch the video you’re commenting on 🤨
ALSO UPDATE: Rhett and Link backed out of the fundraiser after hearing about what the company is about!!! Idk if anyone else has done it as well

Not on social media a lot so I probably just missed it. Did they post about backing out? Can anyone link?
As soon as my boyfriend told me about Mark’s video and that he was working with big names to donate, I was seriously worried about this.
I have trouble in Math and I have an IEP and they call that a “special need” and it’s like-
Sir I just can’t do long division😭😭
Dude I couldn't do it either, eventually you'll be able to use calculators lol
I can’t do long division even though i would consider myself pretty good at maths (gets straight A’s In maths)
I just don’t get all the steps of long division 😟
I can't divide without a calculator at all and can barely subtract without one
i assume you can do derivatives
My 7th grade math teacher once said that a person who is wearing a cast has special needs and that it is indicative of it (I’m pretty sure this is correct.).
This made me cry - especially when you started talking about first person language. Autism is who I am - not something I have that I need to be rid of. Thank you for this, Chloe!
I’m so disappointed in his choice in charity. The video had such a good message and he has such a large platform so it’s spreading. But dear god the charity is gonna hurt so many people.
Literally
This reminds me of Sia's response when she was told about how bad AS is: "Oh shit. I had no idea...!"
Sure.
its just sad thatsites like that try to profit from people trying to help autistic people
"Everyone has a little bit of autism" the way I physically reacted at that lmao
@@DeziVlogs what’s wrong the community tab post?
I mean I might just be stroking myself here but I kind of got that from the thumbnail.

And yet, she could be faster. (I've got her on 1.5x now. There's an arms race brewing...)
You should try listening to music at 2x speed! It's so fun
Special needs was the politically correct way to say disabled when I was growing up. Personally I am happy that disabled is the preferred term.
I totally agree with you regarding person first language, I have been told that I should use person first language to remind myself that I am more than my disability and that I shouldn't define myself by it.
Real "politically correct" language is self-claimed terms and dictated by the people who use those terms. So yeah, I agree with you.
Wait I thought person first was “person with autism” and was frowned upon
You have SUCH an incredible personality and you have a way with words that is just.. amazing.
Also good job moving quickly Chloe, you went from an ig post probing about the video idea to posting a video insanely quickly
perfectly cut scream of “NOOOO” then ad
It’s great knowing multi millions of dollars will go towards forcing autistics into their shell the same way I was/did. Millions of dollars going towards giving people like me PTSD and Depression.
That's what confused me, I don't think I had been in an engineering class with an autistic person. Not only that some of the best engineers I know are autistic. With that in mind how does he have that closed view that Autistic can't walk on mars. Rhett and Link have always been real ones. Always very thoughtful and self aware. Not surprised that they dropped out.
I don't know you but I know that you're not a burden ! you're amazing and I wish you and your husband hapiness and I wish you well !
the way you described the spectrum was absoluetly beautiful
So I did all I could by liking and commenting! I just wished I saw this before the charity event so I could've known what this charity organization really stood for. Thanks for educating me! I'm definently subbing now.
Thank you for being one of the most amazing people!! I’m a teacher and I’ve taught many Autistic students who people expected so little of and I hated it because they had so much to give. They just didn’t do it in the way that society expected.
Mark’s video led me to your channel so I’m thankful for that. I have an awesome six year old autistic son and I’ve learned so much from you today.

I don't mean to sound rude and I won't reply to comments cause I deal with my own mental things but like.. Maybe you need to be less rigide about the words people use. Interacting with others is already hard enough without making people walk on eggshells especially when you literally change your mind about how you feel about someone using superpower/special abilities as descriptives when talking about abilities and differences.
I thought exactly the same!!! It was pissing me off. She was soo busy critizicing the words he says that she didnt focus on the message!
I agree, i think we totally should discuss terminology and deeper messages with openly and rationally but not criticise the people for every minor language nuance, if there is conflict within the community on what language we like prefer that means we can't talk about it like this video, as though there is a distinct right and wrong. Some people in the community are fine with "special needs", some people don't like "superpowers" (I hate it and find it so patronising! Especially when my so called super powers also cause me difficulties!!!) So let's not act like we should criticise others for saying things like that if everything else is respectful and reasonable

Hell without ableism we might achieve world peace... (Also of topic I love your vivarum. My sister makes them.)
when i watched marks video, the first thing that came to my mind was a friend of mine, 25 on the spectrum, love him nd if you were to have a conversation with him youd notice he really misses school and his community within his class. seriously if you were to talk to him today he would bring up teachers and classmates from three years ago. he isnt allowed to get a job, the neighboring community doesnt quite understand him... life in not easy for him right now... and hearing about Autism next from Mark really gave me hope. there is a group of ppl that do care and want to help ppl like my friend who is so so smart but might need guidance and maybe supervision doing some task. that autism next thing can give someone like HIM an oppotrunity to move foward and integrate into society. for those who are like "i have degrees and autism" that is fuckin amzing!! but there are a whooooollleeee lot of ppl who are non verbal, over looked, not given the proper space or in some cases abused. i feel mark is trying to speak up and out for those who cant... imagine my 25 year old friend, who has no job, cant go to school, is banned from certain parts of the neighborhood cause moms dont understand him.. fuckin sad right??... now imagine him with a job.. making money and friends...

How can a smart, well educated father, be in support of an organisation that would actively abuse and harm his own child given the chance 😞 there’s no excuse for his lack of even doing 10 minutes of basic research

I think someone should reach out to Mark Robber. I know he genuinely wants to do the right thing, just doesn't know how.
As soon as I saw NEXT FOR AUTISM, I was like "oh that'd be amazing right?" WRONG. Next for autism is an organization supported by Autism Speaks. Mark should've known from the very beginning why NFA isn't a great organization and why we #Autistics say it is wrong. I'm just glad that as a Mythical Beast (rhett and link fan, check them out btw good mythical morning. You'll love em), we came together and got R&L off the live stream because we gave them research to back it up and Mark should've done his own before making this video!
This guy even has the gall to title it 'the truth about my son' Reminds me of Truth Social.
While it's possible Mark is simply unaware of the dangers of these organizations, isn't he supposed to be smart? He's smart enough to overengineer packages squirrel mazes & glitter bombs but he's not smart enough to realize what we mean by #NotAboutUsWithoutUs?
Can you put the names of the charities you listed as good charities in the description?
I have a friend with an autistic son that I would like to give the names of the charities to.

I've seen people even say that calling someone autistic is rude and that saying they have autism instead is correct? like what? I personally never saw much of a difference, I can say both, they're interchangeable. But if I had to pick one, definitely "I'm autistic." I'm a teacher to autistic kids, and I agree... they are spectacular... and warm and funny (even intentionally) and creative and imaginative. It's an honour to work with the students I do even though it is really rough at times. Not because they are autistic... but because I might be too. I 100% agree with you on the way neurotypical people try to act like our disabilities are superpowers. I have ADHD, and get so annoyed with people comparing it to a superpower. I know it's done with good intentions, but it usually comes across as condescending.
youre too pure for this world
Chloe, My advice since this Mark Robert is better person than I thought because he does love his Son, maybe you contact him personally and tell him everything that you said in this video about the Evil group Autism Speaks and that other group that are hate groups against people who are Autistic!!
Hello, I am Elly, I am on my brother's account currently, but anywho,
I myself am a child with ADD, and whenever someone ask me if I took my pills, (I have to take both attention and anxiety pills,) I usually either say yes, or go take them, but sometimes people call my pills medicine.
I can imagine New Zealanders say that someone has Australianess.
People so easily look for the bad in peoples words rather than the good.
omg, more people need to see this!
@@randomuserwitharandomname6183 Exactly ^^
Its not like "having blue eyes" its like saying someone "has black" or "has gay"
@@junipersr Thanks, I'm glad to have read your comments!
*subbed* much love from Vancouver Canada 🇨🇦 thank you for your words ❤️
Commenting for the algorithm! Mark should honestly reconsider!
one of the problems i have with this video is that he included the demonstration of a sensory overload with no tw at all. it almost sent me into an overstimulation episode and it's not ok that he didn't give any heads up.
Thanks for educating me, I’m sad I couldn’t find this earlier.
You are very beautiful and seem like a wonderful person as well!
P.s. I love your intro art and music.
