Japan does horror so damn well, im so sick of jumpscares in american horror movies. The suspense and intensity is what i love the most, the shots that hold on to a seen and the music that makes everything creepy.
the thing about the japanese version is that the camera angles look more like a 3rd p's point of view which makes it more horrifying because you feel like you're also in the scene while the remake is more cinematic and reminds you that it's just a movie.
Im actually pissed that this iconic movie that also gave me nightmares as a kid is not on Top Japanese Horror flicks countdowns. Like, its really a fresh new take on horror films ever since The Ring and The Grudge.
Japanese Exorcism Scene: A critic for the fool TV paranormal show in Japan and in other countries that don't really care about the girl but just for money and audience, where everything goes wrong with a creepy female silhouette behind the wall. American Exorcism Scene: Broken lights and a man who scream against a phone, making all this scene just a funny joke, the worst thing is that is not even scary.
You're so damn right. I mean it is difficult to translate this scene into another culture with a different religion and understanding of faith and so on but this was so bad that to me it feels like a bad joke to the original where religion is such a big thing at the roots of the whole culture.
Exorcism scene in Japanese version scared me so much during my childhood. Also, killer ringtone in Japanese version is way creepier than the remake. In my opinion, Chakushin Ari, Ju-On & Ringu rank top 3 of the best J-horror movies.
Władca Wymiaru I watched it about 10 years ago. Can’t really remember the whole story. 😅 But the scene which a little girl got murdered by her uncle (?) is still in my mind. That scene alone is very disturbing. Albeit some good/sad moments such as the dead girl’s head was in the bag and she returned back her friend’s bear, this movie is pretty bored, and nowhere close to Ju-On: The Curse. But still it is better than the awful Japanese reboots. Many J-horror films between 1990s and early 2000s are really good & classic.
@@edwintanaiyang3206 They are on youtube. In White Ghost all were murdered by "mirror ghost" In Black Ghost, it was strange unborn evil spirit...it WON despite the exorcism.
I notice the Japanese version has more static shots at some points, are also longer and farther away, which is scarier, it's like you've just happened by a stranger, and witnessing an accident, kinda makes you feel trapped in the moment with the victim
I've never seen the Japanese version or the american version. And I can say that the Japanese one scared me so much more from these comparing shots. Everything just seemed well cared for to make the characters show how confusing and scary this all is. And the american one feels so dead panned that it's kinda boring to look at.
Motorola Rzr and the upcoming Samsung Z Flip will be the phones for you then. Their foldable phones that open up like flip phones. Only thing, moto phone is 1500. The Z Flips comes out next month and is said to be under 1000.
I rented the Japanese one from Blockbuster one time and it scared the crap out of me. When the American version came out, I didn't even bother. It didn't look half as good as the original 🤦♀️🤷♀️🙁
It's so crazy I saw the american version as a young teenager and because I remember the concept but not the movie exactly I bought the japanese version secondhand online. The jp version is such a great movie with the slow pacing and the chills and thrills it gaves you but after watching it and this slide show about both versions I have to ask myself "why the hell you'd liked the us version as teenager?" It is so far from the original. I mean it's more an action movie with tonnes of effects it didn't scare you on any level ...
omg i watched this movie YEARS ago and all i remembered was the train scene, the little girls asthma attack and the door spike thingy and i’ve been looking for this movie for ages and i’m so happy i found it
Personally I like both however I think the Japanese one is a bit more unsettling and scary. The scares were a little more "subtle" if you will. It's more about atmosphere and making you feel a constant sense of dread and unease. I have both the English and Japanese versions on DVD actually.
Thank you for cutting out the ringtone lol. I remember i was with my family out to eat somewhere and a phone went off with that ring tone and i was terrified
The problem with the us remakes is they forgot the number one rule in horror, not showing the big bad too much. Its creepier when you dnt know what the fuck is attacking them but the sheer terror on their face is enough to convey its bad.
I also noticed similar cinematography in Ringu. Japanese horrors use long, farther static shots making them look like the viewers observing those events. On the other hand, American horrors use a lot of camera movements, zoom in, zoom out, noises, and thus jumpscares.
Will my phone quit going off while watching these? Anyway, when the mom finds out about Mimiko's abuse, her face looks so more anguished, with depth and conflict. As Mimiko is dying, yeah sure the mom wasn't good, but the look on her face when she knows she's left Mimiko to die, just wow. No words needed.
The original is not perfect but still a decent horror movie with a fun concept. They could have done so many improvements in the remake, but instead manage to make it much much worse...
The biggest let down of One Missed Call is how it handles that exorcism kill. That girl got her head ripped off by a Ghost! How do you, as a filmmaker, not want to at least *try* to put that on film!
One thing I'll give the remake is at least it didn't have an obnoxious blue/green filter like every other American remake of a Japanese horror movie seems to have.
I actually saw one missed call last year after a long time and man the CGI is pretty bad. It's crazy that both the American grudge and the ring came out years before yet still looked better in every way. I don't like the new grudge remake but it doesn't seem like there's any CGI which is how it should be.
American remake is.. meh. Completely soulless copying work. Also, the acting is really awful. At 3:41, it looks like she intentionally dropped her phone. 😂
When America remakes a Japanese movie it never turned out to be better or as good as the original but still this One Missed Call remake is not that bad its just not as good as the original and the Japanese ringtone is way creepier
I get it now why I always found remake funny or boring . Japanese actors act like as its really happening with them & they're really become victim . They make it look like natural & every plot has link with each other . Thats why Japanese version horror movies seem really scary . But remake version actors acting not look realistic . They make every plot in fast speed & ghost look like they have fake makeup . Sometime they do overacting . So , I'll suggest everyone to watch original version .

At last I found out that I watched the wrong movie 😅. What an emotional story line 😂
Watching the American version and finding out there's an original Japanese movie that was ACTUALLY scary is like being introduced to a guy on TH-cam who says he can cook like Gordon Ramsey but he himself is actually a terrible cook and doesnt know jack shit about working a kitchen 😅😂
I like both versions of the One Missed Call Ringtone the Japanese version sounds good for a Christmas Jingle Song and the American Remake version sounds good for a lullaby and Ice Cream Truck song. I haven’t watched the American remake but the Japanese horror is always better to me. In the American horror films industries there’s a lot of unnecessary gore and lack of character.
3:35 The Japanese only needed one cut while the Western one shows too much and shows the MC's reaction. The Japanese knows that this movie supposed to scare and shock you, the audience, not show how much scared the character is.
You don't need to watch either the versions to know that the japanese is better. Gore Verbinski's The Ring is the only good american remake, its amazing and it works just as the original Ringu, but the problem is that a lot of other movies tried to be as iconic as The Ring, and then we're gifted with garbages like 2004 The Grudge, One Missed Call and a lot of other weak, emotionless remakes.

Japanese horror concepts relies heavily on the creepiness that's why it is very effective than cheap jumpscares and gore
What American horror used to rely on- atmosphere and creepiness
Now (mainstream horror) jumpscares and gore

The funny thing is that, the budget was MUCH, like MUCH cheaper for the original version.

That's the point. Sometimes keeping it simple gets the job done.
