I like both versions. But to me honestly, colors of Asian horror movies are creepier than Wester horror movies. They create the dark, curious and unsatisfied atmosphere. The original one's poster is scary. But in Western version, it looks like a fantasy movie.
6 reasons why the original is better: 1. In the hospital when she sees the ghosts of the old lady and her visitor across the room, the remake feels the need to add "I see something". Why? In case the viewer is blind and hasn't received their cornea transplant yet? It cuts the underlying tension. 2. The report card kid in the hallway is initially shown with no head area visible in the original. This unsettles the viewer more. 3. The room changing is more eery in transition and colour in the original. The remake is less subtle, therefore not working as well. 4. The shadow on the floor in the room changing scene is very creepy in the original. The remake didn't care for it. 5. The calligraphy/restaurant scenes... seriously? The ghost and its movement are frightening in the original. In the remake it just looks like a pissed off banned customer who is grumpy about other people being able to eat there. 6. The old man in the elevator is far more creepy in the original. This is an example of how to use a filter to good effect, not just because that's what supposedly makes a scene creepier. In the original, its far scarier for him to suddenly be standing in her elevator after she saw him on the CCTV in the other one, as opposed to bashing through the metal in the remake. Plus the CCTV footage being of lower quality in the original adds to the eeriness of the scene. Some of the remake is good in this video, it's not all worse. But it does fall short, and is not as good as the original. The problem with Hollywood remakes of Asian movies is that they don't build unease in the viewer as well as the originals do, because they don't get the creepiness. And at times they overstate.
The remake fell short in that the use of CGI was noticeable in all of their shots, including the shadow people, room changing sequence, and the mirror scene, where the original only noticeable CGI was the ignition scene before the explosion in the street.
There is crucial one you missed:the shadow people in Chinese version are just neutral characters, they aren't evil, they just doing their job to send deads away from the world, but in Hollywood they made them like bad devils from hell or sumthing, this is the ideal that against Chinese culture, because we don't see afterworld passengers evil or satanic, they are just doing their job that's all
I agree, I watched it again recently and I felt that the main actress lacked real emotions. Especially when she was crying I wasn't convinced. But I still liked the atmosphere and the ending.
The original is better because of the storyline, and the effects but with regards to the acting of the main character, I would say the remake with Jessica Alba is far good. She really conveyed the fear and emotion compared to the original actress..
Those who said the original didn’t age well, I politely disagreed. The remake fell short in that the use of CGI was noticeable in all of their shots, including the shadow people, room changing sequence, and the mirror scene, where the original only noticeable CGI was the ignition scene before the explosion in the street. In comparison, the awful CGI really distracts and is outdated. Also, the original slow panning to reveal the horror is a better effect than whiplashing the camera around like an amateur with loud music to punctuate the scene in the remake is like a kid just got his camera.
Lol my favorite remake to hate honestly I give most of them a chance unlike others who come here to bash ever American remake but this one bothered me most for some reason I really remember disliking it maybe because the original felt creepy af to me
saw the original recently and it was blring. I think the story was super good but the scared didn’t age well. The U.S. one i loved as a kid and tho rewatching it mad eme doubt of my taste, it did sort of age well.
No, it is not, the remake is a ripoff of the original, and they deserve to be executed for copying the plot of the movie, that remake of this film is the worst American ripoff movie to exist.
I hate how the remake made the shadows seem like demons or evil monsters making monster noises, like why??? Wtf?? The story never hinted at these things being evil or even interactable with the main character, they were always just there, not to scare her either, just because they were like manifestations of the angel of death coming to the people, like fate agents too because like the village girl and Mun, neither of them could change the fate of those that were supposed to die in the events that transpired separately, but it was more like a double edge sword for them, more for Mun, since we never saw the village girl see loved ones who died, but Mun was able to see Yin Yin right during her passing away. I also hate how the remake botched a very beautiful and sad, but touching scene when Yin Yin died, the original score and how the scene went was an actual happy goodbye from her to Mun and she left her a cheerful message about the world too. The remake just HAD TO like Hollywood and America always do with horror movies, made it solely an overacted scary scene using scary music, unnecessary mystery and the ruining of the shadow of death representing an exit for Yin Yin, but in the remake it was like an evil spirit taking the girl away and even like threatening the main character. So annoying. And of course...America needs to have the heroic ending.
Naina was better than the American remake only because it was so bad that it’s hilariously bad that it is good. The actress over act and some of the filming decisions, although it is an exact clone of the original, were just hilarious.
