The Japanese version with its natural warm lighting gives it a more realistic feel and makes you unaware what was going to happen next, which is what real scare should be.

The bed scene (2004 version) is the one that scared the shit outa me for month. It was an extremely sadistic choice to make for the director for he knows that when you are terrified, you feel trapped, you have nowhere to go, then your instincts tell you to act exactly like a child would do. A child scared of the dark or a ghost would definitly hide under his sheets, it's like the last sanctuary you have. ANd then in this movie, the answer is "no, fuck it, you're doomed wherever you are and the menace comes from the bed itself". (Stupide director, hate ya...)

I like the Japanese cinematography better. It looks more realistic, so when it's day, we're letting our guards down, therefore when the scary stuff happens we're caught off guard and it becomes scarier + the realism adds to the feeling that it can happen to you, too. The blue lighting in the remake is scary in a cheap way. My opinion.

What J horror gets better than western horror is the feeling of realism, the feeling that you could just find yourself in a situation like that. In the remake there is a build up to everything. For example: J version: Oh look, a regular house behind this wall. Remake: Cue the slow, dramatic, cinematic pan over this ominous house to let everyone know that this place is one creepy mofo...

    • @jasontodd6779

I actually feel like these were way closer in quality to one another than the Ring movies. I can safely say there were some scenes done way better in the remake and some better in the original.
Like there were some instances where the american version drew less attention to the scares or had better effects that were close enough to properly compare, while the japanese version sometimes did it better on the imagery side of things. I think the best demonstration is Kayako in the end. The way she moves is way creepier in the american version but the way she looks is creepier in the japanese version

I'm a huge fan of vengeful ghost stories and this series of films along side with The Fog, The Ring, Poltergeist, and The Woman In Black are possibly my favorites. I love the idea that the ghosts don't just stop with haunting the people who wronged them in life but also anyone who comes into contact with the time, place, or object they are attached to and that no mater where they go or what they do it will continue to spread and follow them like a plague. (Revenge is a very human emotion and to see it represented by something inhuman and not of this world is really creepy)

I'd have to agree. I love the original, but I do think that some of the effects looked a little bit too... I dunno, fake, I guess? It takes me out of the moment entirely. For example, being able to see the white makeup on Toshio's face coming off in the closeup. Whereas in the American version, it looks very seamless, so there's nothing jarring that makes you lose focus of what's happening in the scene. Both versions are great, but some things are just better with a higher budget. I think it's great that it was the same director, as well, so a lot of what we're seeing in the American version (besides the American cast) was probably his original vision and likely what he would have done if he'd had the budget.

9:02 The original Ju-On wins hands down with that missing jaw scene. It's far more brilliant.
Seeing that poor woman's look of pure shock, confusion, panic, and terror - and having the camera linger on her face for so long - leaves you really imagining and conjuring up some of the worst possible images in your head before the reveal, and her acting is so perfect and so real with so much breathless gasping and despair like "What the actual f*ck am I looking at?!!" It just gets to me, and it takes true talent to scare me with just reaction shots.
And the reveal is just as worse, if not MORE worse than what you imagined. It burns itself into your head. The American version tries too hard (par for the course), and that's guys reaction is goofy as h*ll to me, but the woman's reaction in Ju-On chills me.

There are 3 different universes in Ju-On franchise:
    -The OG: Katasumi (1997 - Short Film), 4444444 (1997 - Short Film), Ju-On (2000 - Home Video), Ju-On 2 (2000 - Home Video), Ju-On: The Grudge (2002), Ju-On: The Grunge 2 (2003), Ju-On: Black Ghost (2009 - Home Video Spin-Off) & Ju-On: White Ghost (2009 - Home Video Spin-Off).
-The "American" ('cause it was made by Sam Raimi with the OG director reprising his role, however he didn't directed the 3rd one): The Grudge (2004), The Grudge (2006) & The Grudge 3 (2009 - Home Video).
-The Japanese Reboot Universe: Ju-On: The Beginning Of The End (2014) & Ju-On: The Final Curse (2015).
-Movies that I Don't have a fucking idea where Are they placed: Sadako vs. Kayako (2016) & Grudge (2020).

The Grudge 2020 takes place in the same time as The Grudge 1 and The Grudge 2 (2004 and 2006) and the connection is revealed in the start.
However since it's a reboot and replacing Kayako/Toshio with Fiona and Melinda so it is not necessary, even though Kayako is here and its canon in the American.
The Ju-On: Origins netflix TV is chronologically the first ever movies, OG universe.
Sadako VS Kayako is its own universe, since there has to be a way for Sadako to exist alongside Kayako.

I think the i loke more the remake we like for having basis in the Japanese terror, they added more terror and without hesitation, I like Buffy's acting, I mean ... Sarah xd
The fainting scene is very funny, the original looks more like a parody of itself than the remake, I reflect more on the remake scene: I would not faint from fear but if I would be frozen, shocked, very scared, as it happened to me one time. The only negative is the blood, in the Japanese horror movies it is more psychological than physical, blood is a very secondary tool.

For instance, the scene compositions are better to tell the story.
The remake used too many useless common horror movie tricks.
There's at least one exception: the hand in the hair. I think it was better in the remake because it took some time to show the hand there. It seems the characters is supposed to take some time to understand there was something weird and think there's someone behind her.
