I'm trying to keep up with headphones and earbuds right now, amongst other content, so I'm trying different workflows and formats to see how I can streamline videos and make more of them so I can expand. Believe it or not, this video is a different format than in the past, and if it seems to do well, I think I'll be able to increase output a little bit more. We'll see :)

I was about to get the WH-1000XM5s after watching several of your review/comparisons when I saw that Bose had a new over ear headphone out. I'm going to wait for your review of them before I decide which to purchase. Your reviews are the most comprehensive and generally closer to my ear than others. I'm a Bose user, I can say Bose sound tuning is leaning towards relaxing neutral sound, detailed. meanwhile Sony's tuning is more bassy, like EDM song feels better on Sony. both are well-built imo, my Bose QC35ii is 5 years old and still kicking, my friend's XM3 is also the same and still alright.
I got the quiet comfort the best sound cancellation and fit you can actually work out with it but it just too small for my ears. Surprisingly my favorite so far is the Beats Studio pro
Funny enough, you've confirmed the the Ults are for me and I would have hated the higher end XM5. I listen to Riddim, Dubstep, Industrial, and Electronic music... SICK! Not to mention I'll be able to make music on these things. Probably the best review I've seen for these headphones. Helped a lot.
@@keithpalacios9417Yes! I did, and they are the best headphones I’ve ever had. And I’ve had a lot. The bass is soooo amazing, and my brain is thoroughly blown with how clean the bass was. I did end up making my own eq in the app that basically handled sound through a multigenre playlist. Mic is definitely the least beastly thing about it. I have autism too, so it’s been a peace of mind with how good the anc works. It’s almost bizarre. Also love the pass through. Highly recommend.
I recently purchased the Sony ULT Wear and I love it! No I am not someone who wants a ton of bass but I discovered with these headphones I can get the right amount of bass for me! I don't use the ULT button. Sony's sound signature is one of my favorites. At the time of posting this in Canada the Sony ULT is on sale for $200 and the XM5 is on sale for $400. I feel the sound on the ULT is close enough that I don't want to pay an extra $200 for it! Some of the headphones I tested were either not loud enough or some what muddy in sound and the bass was barely there! I do recommend trying them for yourself in a store and any other headphones you are interested in. It's important to find the sound quality and comfort on your head that's right for you!
I own the xm5’s.. I find them muddy and bland. Noise canceling is top notch. It’s really disappointing since I’ve owned xm3 earbuds for years and they’ve been perfect save some connectivity problems with my iPhone. Great video. I hope to find the ULTs on demo somewhere.

I got my XM5, and feels about right. They have something to offer for almost everyone Trust me, if you have a wide range of musical preferences, this headphone will fit nicely, unless you prefer to buy one specific headphone for each type of music.
The ANC test sounded like ULT is performing better in this area. Is that your subjective experience of using them? I really only care about noise cancelling performance and was about to buy the xm4s, but now I’m wondering if these are actually superior for noise cancelling. How would you rank xm5, xm4 and ULT purely in terms of noise cancelling?
@@smdjuhurr9474 Yeah, I ended up buying XM4, I ended up having to swap them for the ULTs because one of my ears sticks out too much and I was getting pain, but I definitely felt like the XM4s noise cancelling was superior. I was really bummed out to have to return them. ULTs aren’t bad though.
Great review. TO me the ULT are better in every way except this horrible ultra grave option! Ult does deliver good enough grave from start and does not need any extra bass. To me a better value than XM5 and cheaper.

If you’re gonna get the XM5, it’s definitely money well spent without a doubt. I’ve been using mine for almost a year now, still as good as new, fit and finishing is gold standard. But the new ULT seems pretty good for half the price, getting a Sony headphone is the smartest choice even on IOS.

I have the WH-1000xm5 and the WH-1000xm4 headphones but me thinks I'll also be needing the ULT Wears bc I do need more bass in my life. No matter what I try, I feel like my headphones are never loud enough. Great review.
The better question is whether Sony is addressing the XM5's issues with comfort and sound. The sound felt unbalanced for me. It didn't satisfy me. Also, it hurts me to wear them very quickly on my head. This is why I switched to the Momentum 4 but the Momentum 4 is relatively heavy and I need to use an adapter to get aptX Adaptive on all devices. LDAC has a wider spread. And wait a second, Sony released the XM5 last year. The XM4 launched 2020, the XM3 was released in 2018. Why do you assume a release of the XM6 this year?

Great review my guy. I’m a total bass head and a sony fanboy. Recently upgraded from the MDR-XB950B1 to the ULT wear. And honestly, I was disappointed from the LACK of bass. The 950B1 had wayyy more of a thump and that’s what I loved about it
That transparency mode on the ULT is sounding really good for a pair of $200 headphones (Not Apple or Bose level, but still good). It actually sounded a bit better than the one on the XM5 to me. That being said, I think you should check out the Crusher ANC 2 to see how they compare to it.
This is exactly what i need i love almost all genres of music starting from heavy metal to hip hop. Most of the time I prefer bass bost and sometimes i prefer a flat eq. The ability to change eq without using a app is exactly what i need
I try to make videos for the masses, so I'm not one to measure frequency ranges. I'm also a mixing audio engineer, not an audiophile. My interest in frequency graphs are low compared to simply using my ears. There will be plenty of other great creators that will focus on that.
I have the ult wear and went to compare the nc with the xm5s and honestly it's close I couldn' tell a huge difference, I like my ult wears however I've noticed that on some songs that are already reaaally base heavy that the base does break/crack a little and always at the same parts of the song I think it's cuz of how the song is mixed and not cuz of the headphones but I'm not sure.
Even at the same price, i still picked ult wears lol. The bass is too much fun and thats all i care about😂. I listened to both in the sony store and went "nope, not enough boom with xm5s".
Great Review. I hate the look of the XM5s and my XM4s have started succumbing to wear and tear, so I've been occasionally looking for replacements. Saw these and searched for reviews... doesn't look like they will be a good fit, but at least I didn't spend hundreds of dollars to find out. Thank you so much. The ULT Wear reminds me of my MDR-XB950N1's with the Bass-Effect button, I loved those headphones but I soon after went ahead n got the WH-1000XM4's and haven't looked back since, was introduced to LDAC and haven't been the same since. Now recently picked up the WH-1000XM5's and I can confidently say they're a step up from the XM4's and really enjoy using them. Btw ULT1 is alright, still like that kinda rumble bass but ULT2 is ridiculous 😂 Sony shouldn't have added that!
I'm a long time enjoyer of the now quite old Sony h.ear MDR-100ABN which I have loved wearing a LOT working from home for about 6-7 years (I love the cocoon feeling), but they're wearing out now, sadly. I REALLY liked these for the money. So I'm in the market for replacements - going to stick with Sony specifically for their ANC and the comfort vs sound vs money value. This is the first I have seen of the new ULT range. Apart from the ULT2 setting (your Honda bass bin analogy is so on point, lol), I think since there's a €150ish difference between the XM5 and the ULT, I'd be happy enough with the latter for sure. From your review, I think the ANC sounds a tad better on the ULT, as does the call quality and also the bass/sound quality with no ULT, and ULT1. ULT2 is ridiculous. I hope they still have an app to setup the equaliser which looked great on the various other headphones for the past few years!

Both have some really great ANC, so if you're trying to find something with good ANC but at a cheaper price than the XM5 and that's what you care about the most, I'd say these are a good choice!

All right. Quick question. The Beats Studio Pro are often on sale, which one between the Sony ULT or the BSP would you choose? Very nice reviews by the way!
One of the most important things that most ULT reviews (including this one) fails to mention is that the bass levels on the two ULT button options are ADJUSTABLE in the app. I’ve seen so many reviewers talk about how “ULT2 is too much” and the like. Well, you have ULT2 set to +10, then. In the app, you can set it to +1 if you want. It’s all USER DEFINED. The button essentially makes it so you have 2 bass level presets (the way you want them set in the app), available to toggle through via the button. That’s the selling point of this. I have the XM4’s and also just picked these up. Honestly, I like these better, for a fraction of the price.
I just have one question: Why did they make the logo so shiny? It just looks poor and cheap. Especially in the sun. The XM4 has a copper logo that looks neat and aesthetically pleasing.

Thanks for the great test! I feel like the ULT Wear is a decoupling of Sony’s XM line. Tbh the ANC and standard profile seem great. Even ULT1 is good for bass heads. I expect the XM6 to be a new, higher tier product designed towards the 500-700 price point - going after the AirPods Max, BW PX8 and Focal Bathys.
They're decent with them off. I'm not sure if I'll spend time on the EQ for these. If there's enough demand, I might, but it takes me about a week or so to tweak and tune, and I'd rather make more reviews of all the other products coming out right now/that I have. We'll see!

I wonder if the issue with the microphone still there or not. Got this issue since xm3 and xm4. If you connect to the laptop, with mic on - for online meeting or gaming mode, the sound becomes really bad quality.

Eh the sets 8 years ago (xb950) were a little more "crusher" like in how silly the distorted midbass boost was, its still silly bass boost but more controlled.

Ults if you care about bass if you want good bass and clarity then the xm4s. I recently got some in November last year and I alr have over 600 hours on the headphones 10/10
If sony won’t release their xm6 this year imma go with the XM5. Not really a base head. But boy the calls and nc/transparancy is solid on the ULT. 😍 Maybe I might wait a little longer till the xm6 drops. 🤔
I can't speak for the xm5's so take this video and others experiences as a judgment for that however I can say the ult wear's have very impressive noise cancellation. To perhaps give an example that most can associate with, if you are on a coach with alot of people, the noise cancellation completely silences the engine, and any voices are nearly completely muted, occasionally you might hear voices from a video someone Is playing or if they have their phone call on speaker (not sure why but this kind of thing can get picked up just a little by the anc), with some music on you won't hear anything of your background so really good if you commute via bus or train, but also great if you live near a road and want to tune out the sound to listen to some tunes
Bought the XM5, used them for 2hours or so and returned them back to Amazon. The bass was trash. Bought the ULTs and been using them ever since. The bass is nice and I tuned the EQ enough to make them sound pretty good. My use case for headphones is for movie watching so I need great bass
Skullcandy evo are absolutely mind-blowing for movies , you feel exactly like an Imax theater, I cannot watch movie without them anymore , I have also seenheiser hd660s. K712 pro , hdj8 , but the skullcandy evo have the best sub bass I ever heard in my life , goes ultra low like a real subs

I'm glad I saw this video. I thought this would be good for metal, but I guess it isn't. What would you recommend for someone who likes bass boosted metal? I have the old model WH 1000XM2B - they are good, but I'd like it even better.
Try Sennheisers, I have a Momentum 4, and it has a detailed sound with nice mids for heavy guitars, and slamming bass that doesn't overshadow the other frequencies. Treble is also better than on any Sony and Bose I have ever tested. I think the Accentum (Plus) might also work well, but I haven't listened to them yet. I also like B&W PX7 S2, but they have a more laid-back sound. The Momentum 4 are more forward-sounding and better suited for rock/metal imho. But they still handle every other genre really well.

ULT uses the same tech as XM4 as the XM5 has newer tech. So you saying the XM5 and 4 sound the same is basically saying all 3 sound the same lmao

The better question is whether Sony is addressing the XM5's issues with comfort and sound. The sound felt unbalanced for me. It didn't satisfy me. Also, it hurts me to wear them very quickly on my head. This is why I switched to the Momentum 4 but the Momentum 4 is relatively heavy and I need to use an adapter to get aptX Adaptive on all devices. LDAC has a wider spread.
And wait a second, Sony released the XM5 last year. The XM4 launched 2020, the XM3 was released in 2018. Why do you assume a release of the XM6 this year?

Great review my guy. I’m a total bass head and a sony fanboy. Recently upgraded from the MDR-XB950B1 to the ULT wear. And honestly, I was disappointed from the LACK of bass. The 950B1 had wayyy more of a thump and that’s what I loved about it

That transparency mode on the ULT is sounding really good for a pair of $200 headphones (Not Apple or Bose level, but still good). It actually sounded a bit better than the one on the XM5 to me.
That being said, I think you should check out the Crusher ANC 2 to see how they compare to it.

This is exactly what i need i love almost all genres of music starting from heavy metal to hip hop. Most of the time I prefer bass bost and sometimes i prefer a flat eq. The ability to change eq without using a app is exactly what i need

I just got mine from my mom, and I can't turn the volume all the way up because the bass lowers, but they do a good job!

I try to make videos for the masses, so I'm not one to measure frequency ranges. I'm also a mixing audio engineer, not an audiophile. My interest in frequency graphs are low compared to simply using my ears. There will be plenty of other great creators that will focus on that.

I have the ult wear and went to compare the nc with the xm5s and honestly it's close I couldn' tell a huge difference,
I like my ult wears however I've noticed that on some songs that are already reaaally base heavy that the base does break/crack a little and always at the same parts of the song I think it's cuz of how the song is mixed and not cuz of the headphones but I'm not sure.
Even at the same price, i still picked ult wears lol. The bass is too much fun and thats all i care about😂. I listened to both in the sony store and went "nope, not enough boom with xm5s".
Great Review. I hate the look of the XM5s and my XM4s have started succumbing to wear and tear, so I've been occasionally looking for replacements. Saw these and searched for reviews... doesn't look like they will be a good fit, but at least I didn't spend hundreds of dollars to find out.

The ULT Wear reminds me of my MDR-XB950N1's with the Bass-Effect button, I loved those headphones but I soon after went ahead n got the WH-1000XM4's and haven't looked back since, was introduced to LDAC and haven't been the same since. Now recently picked up the WH-1000XM5's and I can confidently say they're a step up from the XM4's and really enjoy using them.
Btw ULT1 is alright, still like that kinda rumble bass but ULT2 is ridiculous 😂 Sony shouldn't have added that!
I'm a long time enjoyer of the now quite old Sony h.ear MDR-100ABN which I have loved wearing a LOT working from home for about 6-7 years (I love the cocoon feeling), but they're wearing out now, sadly. I REALLY liked these for the money. So I'm in the market for replacements - going to stick with Sony specifically for their ANC and the comfort vs sound vs money value.
This is the first I have seen of the new ULT range. Apart from the ULT2 setting (your Honda bass bin analogy is so on point, lol), I think since there's a €150ish difference between the XM5 and the ULT, I'd be happy enough with the latter for sure. From your review, I think the ANC sounds a tad better on the ULT, as does the call quality and also the bass/sound quality with no ULT, and ULT1.
ULT2 is ridiculous.
I hope they still have an app to setup the equaliser which looked great on the various other headphones for the past few years!

Both have some really great ANC, so if you're trying to find something with good ANC but at a cheaper price than the XM5 and that's what you care about the most, I'd say these are a good choice!

One of the most important things that most ULT reviews (including this one) fails to mention is that the bass levels on the two ULT button options are ADJUSTABLE in the app. I’ve seen so many reviewers talk about how “ULT2 is too much” and the like. Well, you have ULT2 set to +10, then. In the app, you can set it to +1 if you want. It’s all USER DEFINED. The button essentially makes it so you have 2 bass level presets (the way you want them set in the app), available to toggle through via the button. That’s the selling point of this.
I have the XM4’s and also just picked these up. Honestly, I like these better, for a fraction of the price.

Thanks for the great test! I feel like the ULT Wear is a decoupling of Sony’s XM line. Tbh the ANC and standard profile seem great. Even ULT1 is good for bass heads. I expect the XM6 to be a new, higher tier product designed towards the 500-700 price point - going after the AirPods Max, BW PX8 and Focal Bathys.

With ULT off, these sound decent. What I am waiting on are your EQ settings for these. Or is it too much bass even at ULT 1?
They're decent with them off. I'm not sure if I'll spend time on the EQ for these. If there's enough demand, I might, but it takes me about a week or so to tweak and tune, and I'd rather make more reviews of all the other products coming out right now/that I have.

I wonder if the issue with the microphone still there or not. Got this issue since xm3 and xm4. If you connect to the laptop, with mic on - for online meeting or gaming mode, the sound becomes really bad quality.

Ults if you care about bass if you want good bass and clarity then the xm4s. I recently got some in November last year and I alr have over 600 hours on the headphones 10/10

If sony won’t release their xm6 this year imma go with the XM5. Not really a base head. But boy the calls and nc/transparancy is solid on the ULT. 😍 Maybe I might wait a little longer till the xm6 drops. 🤔
I can't speak for the xm5's so take this video and others experiences as a judgment for that however I can say the ult wear's have very impressive noise cancellation.
To perhaps give an example that most can associate with, if you are on a coach with alot of people, the noise cancellation completely silences the engine, and any voices are nearly completely muted, occasionally you might hear voices from a video someone Is playing or if they have their phone call on speaker (not sure why but this kind of thing can get picked up just a little by the anc), with some music on you won't hear anything of your background so really good if you commute via bus or train, but also great if you live near a road and want to tune out the sound to listen to some tunes

Bought the XM5, used them for 2hours or so and returned them back to Amazon. The bass was trash. Bought the ULTs and been using them ever since. The bass is nice and I tuned the EQ enough to make them sound pretty good. My use case for headphones is for movie watching so I need great bass
I have the xm5 the base is great u need to tweak the qualizer & if u have a samsung phone power on dolby for higher & rich sound

Skullcandy evo are absolutely mind-blowing for movies , you feel exactly like an Imax theater, I cannot watch movie without them anymore , I have also seenheiser hd660s. K712 pro , hdj8 , but the skullcandy evo have the best sub bass I ever heard in my life , goes ultra low like a real subs

I'm glad I saw this video. I thought this would be good for metal, but I guess it isn't. What would you recommend for someone who likes bass boosted metal? I have the old model WH 1000XM2B - they are good, but I'd like it even better.
Try Sennheisers, I have a Momentum 4, and it has a detailed sound with nice mids for heavy guitars, and slamming bass that doesn't overshadow the other frequencies. Treble is also better than on any Sony and Bose I have ever tested. I think the Accentum (Plus) might also work well, but I haven't listened to them yet.
I also like B&W PX7 S2, but they have a more laid-back sound. The Momentum 4 are more forward-sounding and better suited for rock/metal imho. But they still handle every other genre really well.
