It was Miku herself who decided her voice wasn't powerful enough for the music she wanted to play. It was her who decided on Saiki. Initially they did dual vocals, but then Miku gave the lead to Saiki and picked up the guitar.

There are 2 types of reactions: 1) surprise me and 2) nuance. Most reactors never get beyond "surprise me" type reactions. But the best ones move into "nuance". Once you get past the surprise of Band-Maid's sound, you can start talking about nuance of their performance and composition. Since you are also a musician, you can give lots of nuance.

Miku is a mezzo soprano and Saiki an alto, Miku can cover the whole range of Saiki's voice low to high and can singer lower and higher than Saiki. The essential difference is that Saiki's voice is more powerful and as i'm sure you will discover in time she is more vocally expressive, she can squeeze out every emotion you could wish for which for me anyway totally eliminates the language barrier.

Saiki's live vocal incorporates sass, cute, raw emotions with touch of masculinity at the same time. I don't know how she does it but she's one of the kind singer who's way underrated partly due to studio recording sounds too compressed and poppy.

Kanami switches her guitar tones live from her pedal board. She has demonstrated this a few times on video on Band-Maid Prime. She does switch guitars for different tunings though. She has six pre-sets on her board Clean, Crunch, Drive, 'Hearts' (her favourite with added overdrive and boost), Boost (for leads that aren't solo) and Solo. She also has added effect pedals outside of the pre-sets. Some songs she uses every setting.

This song was #21 of 23. Enjoying your reactions and thoughts. I appreciate their pop sensibilities. I got tired of angry male vocals. Saiki is one that tends to grow on ppl. Some of the songs she borderline raps and her cadence and flow is impressive. To really fully appreciate her one has to watch a full concert and her consistency stands out.
There is a lot to react to with BM because their songs are varied. Onset (Live), Real Existence (Live), Warning (MV), No God (Live), Manners/Black Hole (Live), Dice (MV), Different (MV), Daydreaming (MV), Wonderland (Live), Rinne (MV), Freedom (Live), Choose Me (MV or Live), Blooming (MV), After Life (MV), Unleash (MV) run the gamut of ballad, jazz, classic blues rock, punk, hard rock, thrash, metal, prog metal etc. So hard to get bored since you don't know what to expect.

The 1st time they played live they realised that Muki's voice was not up to where they wanted to be, so looked foe another singer. They found Saki, and never told her about the maid costums, as they were afraid she would not agree to join. It came out later they were correct Saki would not have joined.
I have another Japanese band for you, that you may like, Unlucky Morpheus. The band has so much tallent it should be ilegal. They call themselves a technical melodic speed metal band.

I hear you about running out of things to say about a particular band. With Band Maid, I think there are 3 songs (2 videos) that you need to do before you move on.
    1) Wonderland (live) - very rooted in Jazz - Akane, Misa, and Saiki shine. Super composition.
    2) Manners - Blues and funk oriented groove rock. My favorite B-M song.
    3) Black Hole - Absolute chaos in the best way possible
Manners and Black Hole come as a live 2fer video from an online concert.

Correct Saiki isn't a screaming testosterone pumped gorilla.
She is woman with an amazing voice and has an extremely interesting way to use it. She is using her voice to it's limits, without going beyond it.
For me this is something very new and refreshing in rock music.

  • @crabuki1273
    @crabuki1273 ปีที่แล้ว +13

My two cents: Miku (who we all adore) has a lovely pop voice, but it's not strong enough for her to be reliable live singing lead for an entire concert. Saiki's voice is stronger, and also naturally a little lower pitched, and more reliable live. Saiki sings in a way which engages the muscles in her neck more than some other singers (she always has a neck massager in photos after shows), so it helps her to have a break in the shows. This dovetails with Miku loving the spotlight, so in live shows you get an instrumental, Miku chatting with the crowd and leading Omajinai (Imaginary) Time, and Miku singing lead on a song before Saiki resumes her place for the rest of the show.
You mentioned not knowing how long you can give 'quality reactions' to BAND-MAID. I get that, but I think you won't find that too much of a problem. Honestly, there's definitely a BAND-MAID formula, but the formula is in *approach* more than what you can get with other bands, where lots of songs can sound the same. The playing is always top notch. You will get catchy, uplifting choruses. You will get experimentation in the verses. The second verse is normally a highlight, and will be musically different from the first. Using that formula, however, they find a way to be all over the place. You'll think, 'there's no way this can work,' yet by the end of the song you're just shaking your head, because somehow it does. The music video for "Blooming" is a great example, blending hard rock and borderline rap. There's not an official music video, but they have a song, "Moratorium," which ranges across hard rock and synth pop and, ffs, 70s sludge metal, and that sounds like an absolute disaster in description, but in execution it's amazing.

    • @chrisegbertky
      @chrisegbertky ปีที่แล้ว +3

They remind me of Dick Francis novels. Always good fun and sometimes really good but the hero always ether gets injured or beat up or has a physical handicap to overcome. He has a major problem to solve and a minor problem to solve. Racehorses are somewhere in every book. That being said readers are also exposed to a variety of fields in each book. Vineyard keeping and wine making, gemology, piloting, carpentry and meteorology. Francis was a champion jump 🏇 jockey and many books involve the business of racing but I swear the hero gets the shite beat out of him in half the books. But within that framework he creates great stories. Just like the Maids you think they can't do it this time. Wrong. They just keep crafting and performing at an insanely high level!

Great reaction! They mix all genres, but for some serious metal hooks, try these:
Rinne - That intro is pure metal
Moratorium - Has a sick Pantera like breakdown in the middle
    Black Hole - 220 BPM
I don't recommend you reacting to "Beauty and the beast" because it is mostly pop punk and is very early in their career, but they have a pure thrash metal section for like 15 seconds that comes totally out of the left field.

I am always curious and usually look forward to watching reactions by a people (especially musicians) new to Band-Maid, but your first three are some of the best I have seen (from dozens of reaction channels). It’s also cool that you are checking out so many new bands at the sand time.(have you seen Gacharic Spin’s “Mindset” or “I Wish I” yet ?), but believe me when it comes to B-M, you have barely scratched the surface of what many believe to be the greatest “rock” band in the last 30 years. Not only do they mix and fuse genres and styles across their entire discography , and often within a single song, but you haven’t even made it to the power ballads, acoustic songs / versions, Band-Maiko side project, or Miku’s Cluppo alter ego side project yet. You will likely run out of superlatives and adjectives, but you will not run short of surprise, amazement and wonder at everything these five ladies (who are like sisters on and off stage) can do. Enjoy the never ending journey :) Good job with getting their names right. As for pronunciation, Akane is Ah-kan-nay, and Saiki is actually Sa-ee-kee, but sounds closer to Sigh-key the way she says it

BAND-MAID is essentially a jazz band playing hard rock in small to medium venues. They are the best live rock band in the world at this point in time. "Be more existent!" - Miku Kobato. Remember, this is 100% Miku's band. The first vocalist every to fire and replace herself, which was ballsy back then, because she didn't play guitar until Kanami taught her. Kanami writes the music; Miku writes the lyrics...the band does the arrangements, under Akane's guidance.

New sub here. I have been listening to Band Maid for a couple years now. Their most recent stuff gets quite speedy and proggy, but they have one song that is controversial even for die hard Band Maid fans because of the sound.
Please check out Band Maid's "The Dragon Cries" music video. It is very old school Jimi/Cream sound, with a hint of Bonham in Akane's drumming. The first time I heard it I said, "This is Band Maid??", but has become one of my favs because it is so different. Can't wait to hear and see your reaction. God Bless!

Yes, it’s jazz! WONDERLAND (live) is a wonderful jazzy ballad you should check out.
KOBATO was a Idol Pop singer when she has the inspiration to to form a band that wore outfits like waitresses at a maid cafe and played “cool music”. It took them a while to hit the right formula, but here we are.
You can hear KOBATO’s pop stylings as she sings lead on SAYONAKIDORI (Nightingale). Check out both the original and the acoustic versions.

I used to be the type that would dislike when people would say it's "pop" (at least in the chorus), mainly because it feels like they are reducing them to that genre but now I don't mind it because pop music has catchy hooks that help to mellow out the music that is normally so all over the place with its experimental/prog elements

Your reactions are insightful and engaging. You are not the first person to get the jazz vibe from them, someone said that they are jazz musicians playing stadium rock. I've been listening to them for almost 2 years and own most of their releases and I am *just* getting to the point where they don't surprise me with their talent, but I am still amazed by it. I'm looking forward to your mind melting by 'BLACK HOLE'.

What impressed me, in a recent interview on TH-cam that I saw, Kanami indicated that she already had stacks of pre-written songs ready to go for Band-Maid's future albums. It reminded me of the scene from Amadeus, where Salieri is reading Mozart's work and he is informed by Mozart's wife that they are all Originals.

KANAMI writes the music for the most part. The other 2 MISA and AKANE put their parts in the mix. KANAMI is a huge fan of Carlos Santana so you can hear that in the Jazziness of this song.
MIKU is the originator of this band. SHE decided to bring in SAIKI for the vocals.

If you want to check out their songs without a video or subtitles you could try something like Giovanni, most reaction channels avoid those. If you want to change things up you could react to the acoustic video on their channel for Sayonakidori, they tend to remove them after a certain time. About Us is another song that's pretty different from what you've heard so far and also has captions/translations on the video.

Great line at the end of your reaction . "They make you appreciate music better". This is true. Also, I appreciate when real musicians react to BM. There are some great rock and metal recommendations for other BM songs you can react to in the comments section. You might want to mix it up a bit in your next reaction. Please consider Sayonakidori acoustic version from their Christmas concert. This features Miku on acoustic guitar with drums and bass only. I hope you don't leave BM any time soon.

Manners/BLACK HOLE (official live video) is highly recommended. The first song has MISA putting on a masterclass with her bass, and the second song has Akane putting a 220bpm beat down on her drums. Onset (live) is great if you like instrumentals. Rinne (mv) is one of their heaviest songs. Blending a pop chorus with a hard rock song is something BAND-MAID is good at, check out Dice, Real Existence, the non-fiction days. Want a more bluesy rock song, check out "The Dragon Cries"

Ok, Akane (Drummer - Center audio channel) and MISA (Bassist - Center left audio channel) kicked us off then Kanami (Lead GTR - Right audio channel {except her clean channel which is Center right audio channel}) stepped in and passed back to MISA who then passed it to Miku (Rhythm GTR/Vocals - Left Audio Channel{gtr} Center left audio channel {voc}), then Saiki (Psych/Sigh Key) (Vocals - Center audio channel)
MISA has stated in a few interviews that she enjoys Jazz and R&B and incorporates phrases from both in her playing. She and Akane attended the Tokyo School of Music together and they worked together in a few projects before Band-Maid, and both enjoy the same style/type of music for the most part.
In most songs written by Kanami, she will be in the background filling in all the empty spaces with her guitar.
After trying to explain the difference between Miku's and Saiki's vocals, I've come up with two different analogies. The first is for the tech/music minded listener the second for everyone.
1: Miku is a singer who only has the pre-amp installed, while Saiki has the pre-amp and amp installed.
2: Take a host with an adjustable nozzle open it up to cover as much area as you can, you lose a lot of distance in doing so, but you cover a larger area. Now tighten up, you can make the flow go much further, but you lose coverage. Miku is a Mezzo Soprano, she can go lower than Saiki and MUCH higher, covering almost 3 full octaves, whereas Saiki is an Alto and can cover just under 2.5 octaves. That loss of about a half of an octave gives Saiki much more vocal power allowing her to project her voice much better. One thing you will notice about them however is how well Miku and Saiki can blend their voices. In many songs Miku is singing octaves under or above Saiki's main vocal line, although unless you know what you are hearing you think you are only hearing Saiki.
And we don't need to see a music video, you can pull up any Band-Maid song in your Spotify/Apple Music/Google Music and listen to it and give us your insights and thoughts about the song.
And there are many videos of MISA after concerts where she is icing her shoulder and forearm. And I've seen several behind the scenes videos where the other Ladies of the band are massaging her shoulder after practice or concerts.
There is Pop, there is also Jazz, Funk, R&B, Classic Rock, Southern Rock, I've even heard a few snippets of song which reminds me of Dixieland Jazz.
As for the changing of tone, 90% of it as of the recording of this concert was done on stage by the Ladies themselves. In their pedal boards and Akane's controller. Akane controls the instrument backing tracks/click tracks in addition to the beat. Kanami control the vocal backing tracks from her pedal board (I've read 3 different mentions of this, one of them from Kanami's guitar Tech Daisuke), as for any effect on Saiki's mic I have found one mention from someone who claims to work for the band that in venues where they can't use their own sound engineer Miku controls the effect's on Saiki's mic from a controller on her pedal board, where each song that has an effect is a separate file Miku can call up, so the effect is held on the mic for XX number of beats (I've only found the one reference so this may not in fact be true).
And the Ladies refer to themselves as "An Impossibly Hard Rocking Maid Band"
Thank you for reacting to the Ladies. I look forward to seeing many more of your reactions to their music.

Thanks MMR. Glad you're continuing with Band-Maid. Love that you took notes and are using them. That's what smart people do. As you are a musician your reactions will be better than many other reactors just based on that fact that you can point out unique/interesting facts about what and why and how the Maids are playing and performing. And trust me, keep doing what you're doing for Band-Maid and you'll be just fine. I'll list some stuff that's on their YT channel: the instrumental ONSET-LIVE will show you why Band-Maid always does instrumentals, FREEDOM-LIVE with the happiest drummer ever blasting thru her longest solo, REAL EXISTENCE-LIVE shows a band having more fun than should be allowed. The Awesome BAND-MAID plays just the kind of music that always hits the right spot. Peace. 1.55 p.s. you have a Nightwish vid listed in the Band-Maid playlist.

I don't think you're going to run out of things to react to and admire about BAND-MAID for awhile. You haven't even listened to a balled or seen an acoustic performance yet. Lots left to see and hear. Don't be overly concerned about delivering a thesis at the end of a song. Simply talk about what you heard, what you enjoyed, and what you might not have. Great reaction! Appreciate the musicians understanding of their skill.
As a musician, I think you’ll appreciate the increase in skills Band-Maid has developed and demonstrated on their more recent works. The three songs you’ve listened to are all from 2018 or earlier. In the last 4 years, all five of them have grown quite a bit musically; as individual musicians and players, yes, but as importantly in composition, arrangement, instrumentation, and orchestration.
Personally, I’d like to see a reaction to some of their newer, busier songs -
    - “Sense” - official MV - written as Anime opening song
    - “Unleash!!!!!” - official MV - their most recent song
-“Different” - official MV - also written as an anime opening song.
“No God” - official live video
    “Manners” - official MV
    …then
“Manners & Black Hole” - official live video
I think you’ll see, hear and appreciate a clear growth in craft from the whole band.
A small percentage of the Maidiacs seem to greatly prefer their earlier, more straightforward works like Thrill & Play, and that’s fine. I think most musicians will enjoy the higher levels demonstrated on their more recent works as much or more than the earlier works. But that’s the thing about Band-Maid - it’s all so well done - it’s all great - and gives a tremendous variety to their output and live performance!
Take care and rock on 🤘🏼😎✌🏼🍻

Try warning MV for a great rock song/video or Rinne offical MV for one of their heaviest. Blooming, daydreaming(power ballad), Dice, Manners, different - should all be reacted to with the MVs - (because their isnt a great live recording or the studio versions are just better) but most of the time, you sould react to their official live videos- they are amazing live as you saw here and on domination! Onset is amazing if you want an instrumental - Giovanni is crazy but maybe you wont be ready for that 1 yet lol. Black hole and No God are 2 other amazing tracks as well as the pretty new corallium. As you pointed out there is pop and punk and metal and jazz and prog elements in their rock- to varying degrees in every song :) Sorry to go on so much lol.
