In mid/late ‘19 vocalist, Mayu (former vocalist for the group called Lipstick), wanted to get a band together for a one off performance. She contacted the bassist, Haraguchi-san (former Holderlins member), a school friend. They, then reach out cold call style through social media and e-mail to well known drummer Murata Tamu (a respected session musician and former member of Soramimi). She agrees to hop on board. Now, they need guitarists. Tamu contacts Saki (Mary’s Blood and Amahiru guitarist; briefly a former Destrose member) with whom she has worked with through projects like the WGGC at Naon no Yaon. She agrees. Finally, Saki reaches out to guitarist Hazuki (former Disqualia member and Lisa-X band member) and she climbs on the wagon. They do their one off show (by the name of Mayu session band) but really like the vibe they have together and decide to make it permanent. Mayu first thinks of calling the band Sorai but finds the translation difficult and looks for a name of a flower. Five petals, five members, you get the idea. They go with Nemophila, a genus of flowers native to North America commonly know as baby blue eyes. And here we are. This is a real quick and dirty history. You can do more research on your own if you’re really interested but I think it’ll do for your purposes. Do Revive next…

Mayu (the singer) was formerly in a band called Lipstick. She recruited a former classmate Haraguchi-san, who previously had played bass and sang in a band called HöLDERLINS . Next to join was Saki (guitar), who previously played with Mary's Blood (her time with Nemophila started before Mary's Blood announced they were going on hiatus.) Saki introduced them to Hazuki (guitar) who had played with Disqualia (and plays with the Lisa-X band.)

Beyond the stage, these ladies are also the cutest, humblest rock stars you've ever seen (with the possible exception of Band Maid members).
After a concert, during an interview, Haragushi-San (the bass player) shed real tears of gratitude for the public who supported them, and Mayu (the singer) also started crying with her, thanking everyone too.
Very moving to see these world-class musicians thanking the audience, as if they had doubted their ability to set the stage on fire. I love them for that, beyond their music which is great, of course.
During C19, they did a lot of covers due to restrictions and to keep practicing. You should check out the list, pick a song you like, and listen to what they did with it. ;-)

"ADABANA" is a flower that scatters without bearing fruit even if it blooms. In addition, "NEMOPHILA" is of course a flower that bears fruit, but it is a beautiful flower with 5 leaves of bluish purple and white. Japan has had many all-female bands since the 80's, but rock/metal is not mainstream now. So they choose to use J-pop accents and reinterpretations of rock and metal. They can do anything too.

    Vocals: Mayu
    Bass: Haraguchi-san
    Drums: Tamu Murata
    Guitar (left): Hazuki
    Guitar (right): Saki
All five were in previous bands in Japan - Tamu and Saki have been prominent musicians for a while - but it was Mayu who brought the five of them together in 2019, initially as a session band to back her in a couple of gigs. The five of them clicked, and they took it from there. Oiran (check out the live version) and Revive are other thrash-style songs you'd like - but variety is the spice of life: check out Life, Hypnosis or Style to see their range.

Mayu is the lead singer. The newest song ,Style, has some rap from her, in addition to singing. While I'm not a big rap fan, she does it well.
Being an Iron Maiden fan, you'll probably be interested in their covers of The Trooper and Aces High.

They're a supergroup assembled by chance. When Mayu (lead vocals/the youngest one) left her band Lipstick, she decided to call on some musicians to keep on playing live as a jam band. She knew Haraguchi-san (bass) from school, so she naturally turned to her.
They talked about their project to Tamu Murata (drums), a much-demanded session player, who agreed and suggest Saki for guitar. Saki is a legend on the japanese music scene, having been part of two seminal bands, Destrose and Mary's Blood - she's often mentioned as the best shredder. Saki agreed, but requested sweet Hazuki as second guitarist (ex Disqualia and still in the Li-SA-X band). The first concert and rehearsal went so well that they decided to turn the jam band into a real one. But it's 2019 and covid changed everything.
They decided to release one cover a week on YT to solidify the band and popularize their name. Besides that, they wrote original songs and released several EPs, and then a first album "REVIVE". Since the end of 2021, they are finally doing live shows, and even one at the Whisky A Gogo recently. They will play at the AFTERSHOCK festival. Of course (because they're japanese, so that's the rule): they're amazing live.

I am going to cut and paste part of my comment from your Dissension video
Nemophila formed in the summer of 2019. A young vocalist named Mayu was seeking to put together some musicians so she could really figure out the types of songs she can sing. She had a friend named Haraguchisan who played bass but she needed a drummer and guitarist. Both of them had been in short-lived minor bands that had recently ended. Mayu decided to approach a well respected guitarist for help. That guitarist was Saki who at the time was the founder of a well known all female band called Mary's Blood. Unknown to Mayu, Mary's Blood was on its last legs so Saki had the time and desire to do something new for awhile. Mayu suddenly had one of the best guitarists in Japan. Even better Saki brought in Tamu Murata, a great session drummer, and Hazuki, a guitarist who had been in a short-lived but well-known all female band called Disqualia. Nemophila has been called a supergroup because of these three, especially Saki. The five clicked so well that they decided to turn themselves into a permanent band. Mayu went from just looking for musicians for a temporary project to being part of a band with some of the most talented musicians in Japan. As for Mary's Blood, their most recent album was not a hit and the band, after a few farewell performances, formally ended in April. Saki can now fully concentrate on Nemophila. With Saki piloting the ship, Nemophila will continue to do very, very well.
As a side note, Mary's Blood was formed by former members of a band called Destrose, including Saki. If a history of Japanese female metal is ever written (and it should), there will be a chapter on Destrose. Destrose never accomplished much as a band because they more turnover in members than any band I can think of. It is these former members that make Destrose important. I won't go through all the bands these former members either created or joined, but I will mention two former members besides Saki. One of the members of Destrose was their bassist who joined in 2011 and stayed with them until the end in 2015. After Destrose ended, the bassist decided to form a band based on the old metal that she loved. The bassist was Miho and she formed a band that became known as Lovebites. The first person she recruited was an ex-Destrose drummer named Haruna.
The next Nemophila performance should be from a live show. I strongly recommend the song Oiran, which was their first original song.

@@radioraffa I also tried to learn more about Lipstick. It looks like the band formed in 2012 and the female vocalist left in 2017 while the male drummer left in 2018. It doesn't look like either of them joined another band. I assume Mayu joined when the original vocalist left. They have had only support drummers since 2018. When Mayu left, they have only had support vocalists. One of them is named Maiko and she was in a band called My Complex of Academy when she was guest singing for Lipstick. She is now in an interesting looking folk metal band called Jade Forest Company so I doubt she is doing anything with Lipstick anymore. From the video it looks like Lipstick was nothing more than a decent party rock band. They did get to go to a festival in London for Japanese metal groups after Mayu had left. Interestingly, one of the headline groups was Mary's Blood so Saki was also in London with Lipstick. They released a live album in 2020 that probably didn't do very well. Since then there has been nothing. My guess is that Mayu realized that Lipstick was never going to be much of a band and that they were not going to play the type of metal she wanted to sing. As you say, creative differences.

Every Nemophila song is different, look at Hypnosis, Revive, Oiran, Rollin' Rollin', and Style.
Also check out Hanabie (Ha-Na-Bee-Eh) a Harajuku core metal band, start with 'We Like Sweets".
Nemophila is organic, not a created band. Mayu (singer, ex-Lipstick) wanted to get a band together so she could promote herself and get noticed more (by playing covers). Mayu got ahold of her friend Haraguchi-san (Bassist, ex-Holderns), who, if I remember correctly, already knew Murata Tamu (Drummer, one of the most sought after session drummers in Japan) and asked if she'd like to help. Murata Tamu knew Saki (Guitar, ex-Mary's Blood, generally stands to the right of Mayu from the audience perspective) who knew Hazuki (Guitar, Lisa-X Band, generally stands to the left of Mayu from the audience perspective). They did some covers, uploaded them to TH-cam, then wrote their own original work, uploaded that to TH-cam, decided that they got along and worked well together, so here they are. Side note, the other band members nicknamed Haraguchi-san and Murata Tamu "Laughing Thunder" because they are always laughing and smiling while on stage.

Japan's rock/metal scene sort of.. didn't die out like it did in the us. There is a lot of melding between genres in it, and less "strict" adherence song to song than we might be used to. What I mean is that a group might drift around with a rock/metal base and meld pop/punk/alt/jazz/whatever into songs as they see fit. Some groups stick to a genre more, but generally I've found they're much more willing to experiment in that fashion.
There is a *ton* of stuff to find, from new active groups like nemophila to groups that have been together for decades like ningen isu. Hope you continue to enjoy your journey through japan.

From what I understand, Nemophila got together when Mayu, the vocalist, wanted to do a solo show after leaving her previous band, Lipstick, where she was known as Sindy. I forget who knew who, but Mayu was able to gather Saki and Hazuki on guitar, Haraguchi-san on bass, and Tamu Murata on drums. I know Saki and Tamu played together at Naon Yaon, an annual festival that features female musicians, and I think Saki knew Hazuki from the festival circuit in Japan (because most of the Japanese rock and metal musicians know each other). I've heard that Tamu was primarily a studio drummer, and I could swear I heard the same about Haraguchi-san being a studio bass guitarist. Anyway, they all liked playing together and decided to keep the group going after Mayu's solo show.
Hazuki was in a group called Disqualia, but I think they only lasted one album. Now she's in the Li-Sa-X Band and Nemophila. Saki is one of the many musicians that was in Destrose, a defunct group whose ex-members would found various bands like Mary's Blood, LOVEBITES, Fate Gear, and others. Saki has a solo album and was primarily known for being in Mary's Blood while that band was still active.

The ancestor of today's Japanese female heavy metal bands is the band Destrose. Nemophila's guitarist Saki played with Destrose in 2009 and 2010. Miho and Haruna from LOVEBITES played at Destrose from 2011 to 2015. After Destrose disbanded, Miho founded LOVEBITES. Other Destrose members (notably the amazing guitarist Narumi) formed the band Disqualia. Narumi brought Hazuki (now lead in Nemophila) on board as 2nd lead guitarist. Other members who had previously left Destrose formed the band Mary's Blood. Saki played lead guitar in Mary's Blood from 2012 to 2022. I think there are more than 200 woman/girls and I get the impression that most of them know each other personally.
We western heavy metal fans like to call the Tokyo women's heavy metal scene THE DESTROSE CONNECTION.
A new cover band formed a few weeks ago. In this band (Down Dope Squad) play: Yoshi (lead guitarist band Aldious), Saki (lead guitarist Nemophila), Miho (Lovebites Bass ) Maki Oyama (solo vocalist) and Hina (drummer of the band TSP).
The connections between the girls go as far as the Japanese jazz and blues scene. It took me almost 2 years to figure it all out.
I would say today that Japan has the largest female heavy metal, rock, bues and jazz scene in the world. The above-average talent in all areas is unparalleled.

Welcome to the team my man. It was early 2020 when I first discovered that this Japan scene exists (through a reaction to Band-Maid as it happens) and it's been non-stop discovery of top quality music ever since. Seriously, just let it take you, it's inevitable at this point. Couple of recommendations for a few different groups:
Nemophila - Oiran (live at naon yaon) is an absolute must.
Lovebites - Awakening/Hammer of Wrath (live at zepp). You want thrash? THIS is thrash.
Band-Maid - Unleash!!!. Their latest song, pure energy.
Hanabie - Neet Game. I adore this band because they are so unconventional, lots of genres packed into bursts of aggression and vicious screaming from 4ft10 vocalist Yukina. They do rap, EDM, punk, J-pop and metal all put into a blender and delivered with total conviction. Admittedly, an incredibly divisive band, but one you should check out at least once.
Unlucky Morpheus - Black Pentagram. If you like Nightwish, I'd say chances are high you'll like these guys.
Broken By The Scream - Sayonara Birthday. The wildest combination of sounds, possibly ever. This is the very definition of love it or hate it. Don't wanna spoil anything, but I will just say ahead of time, yes it's real and yes that is them doing that.
This turned long, and I could go on forever, but that should do for now. Enjoy dude 👍🤟

I don't know if you'll read this comment because the video is already a month old, but I really like your reaction. My "western sensibilities" are not too keen on the chorus, either, but it's Japan, so you need something to engage the audience because the Japanese don't sing along at concerts (it's considered rude as far as I know), they only chant stuff other than the lyrics or "lalala" and "wowowow" along. But I love Japanese rock and metal because it's different from what most western bands are doing the last few years, with their monotonous riffs, constant double bass and songs that are only built up for an X amount of breakdowns per song. Japan is a country that's absolutely dominated by Pop music, Idol groups (a kind of pop group, but different than anything that exists in the west) and Anime soundtracks (doesn't matter what kind of music it is, if it's a theme song for a popular anime, it'll sell).
Another thing: if Nemophila is a so-called "super group", then 90+% of all metal and rock bands from Japan are super groups. They all played in more or less known bands before or even simultaneously play in more than one band. It's how they survive as musicians, because metal and hard(er) types of rock (generally) don't sell in Japan. To oversimplify things: Japanese people don't buy music, most of them buy fantasies and stories with their CDs (see the last sentence in the above paragraph). The musicians who don't play or played in multiple groups are either signed to a more or less major label, which is rare (like Lovebites, Band-Maid, MTH or Crossfaith) or also made/make money outside of their current band by being a lecturer/teacher or, like Nemophila's drummer Murata Tamu, as a session/studio musician. I could go on and on about the Japanese mainstream and their "twisted" taste in "music", but it'd literally be a novel by the end and I don't even know if that's something anyone's interested in ;).

I knew you'd like this song. This is my favorite song of 2022... until Band-Maid's new EP drops later this month. This song is just plain epic. One thing you'll need to wrap your head around with regard to the j-metal scene is that there will always be pop elements in the songs. That's Japan's contribution to the scene. They seamlessly merge pop and other genres across the music scene.
Saki - the guitarist on stage left in blue plays (played) in Mary's Blood and her own solo career.
Hazuki - the other guitarist in white played in Disqualia as well as one of the guitarists in LiSa-X Band (actual name) who is worth checking out (not metal though).
Haraguchisan - bassist played in a group called Holderlins and some other work
Murata Tamu - one of the most highly regarded drummers in Japan (regardless of gender) was primarily a studio musician and did some band work as well as collaborations.
Mayu - lead singer and the one who brought the band together was in a band of her own called Lipstick. She had the idea of bringing all these talented artists together with the help of former classmate Haraguchi-san and they first recruited Tamu through web postings. Mayu met Saki through a mutual friend and she brought along Hazuki. So the band's origin was completely organic and not a production of a label or talent agency.
I think you might be ready for some Maximum the Hormone but be warned they can be a bit problematic with reaction videos and there's no rhyme or reason to which videos get through the YT Al Gore Rhythm. Also MtH will literally go from absolute sludge to 1000% pure pop in the course of 3 bars in a song and then back again.
After MtH I would suggest Ninjen Isu - more of a classical heavy metal/hard rock in the fashion of Maiden.

    I wouldn't call this "pop-iess", but rather ANTHEMIC. 🤘🤘
Read the lyrics: It's a song dedicated to those who are called "Adabana". (Research the meaning of the term; it is a Japanese word with a literal and metaphorical meaning.)
Then compare it to the band's name, Nemophila (a type of flower). The lyrics are clearly a reference to the band and those who share their sentiments.

All these ladies are extremely talented musicians. This band has a big future.Mayu vocals are the icing on the cake so to speak. She is amazing. Ive seen a few of their live streams from Japan and when they played the Whisky in LA for their first overseas show and the whole band is amazing live and fun. Mayu can scream even better live. Nemophila are absolutely at the pinnacle of Japanese metal bands (with others). I wonder if you might enjoy the chorus more when you are standing in the crowd at the live show belting at the top of your lungs? :) Basically every song they have released has had a different genre style, they refuse to be pigeon-holed. So you will get all kinds of sounds, a few of their songs certainly have some pop rock fronts with metal hearts. They describe themselves as the loose and fluffy band from hell (roughly translated) so there will generally always be some fluffy. I think you will embrace it :)
For your taste I would say Revive (Official Music Video) is your next stop. It has that soaring chorus but the down n dirty makes it work. Or Raitei (Official Music Video)
Neh-mo-fee-lah is closer than nee-mo-fee-lah. It's the standard way Japanese would pronounce those syllables.

Totally agree with you about enjoying Japanese music as Japanese music and not world music. The downside is having to travel for shows. Since I discovered Japan my dreams of an early retirement have died.
The pop elements and mixing of genres and sever change-ups are a Japanese thing starting with Idol music.
Maximum The Hormone started mixing hard with pop in 2002. Not really mixing. Starting and stopping. BABYMETAL in 2012. Starting and stopping for the first couple of songs and then mixing them in. Nemophila has covers of 2 MTH and 1BM song you can listen to. Research before you react to MTH or BM. They block hard.

All I'll say is, rid yourself of norms and prestige when it comes to genres. You really gotta loose up, mate :) The reason Americal rock and metal has sucked for the past 20 years is because it's all the same stuff all over and it's just boring af. Japan switches it up and carries the torch. At this point, there's only a handful of western bands that are still worth listening to. All the rest are Japanese..
