BAND-MAID are a Japanese band formed in 2013 by founder Miku Kobato(Rhythm guitar, second vocals and Lyricist) She had the idea for the band while working in one of Tokyo's famous Maid Cafe's and thought it would be cool and interesting to combine the maid aesthetic to a hard rocking band. She found lead guitarist and main writer Kanami on a TH-cam like site and asked her to join the band, Kanami was quick to join and invited her friend, Akane a drummer she had worked with a few times in session gigs and in turn Akane invited her friend MISA (bass) that she had met at Tokyo Music School and that was going to be the band with Miku doing lead vocals. but after a short while Miku thought perhaps for rock music her voice was not strong enough so she contacted her agency and found Saiki(Lead vocals and some lyrics)and that was the magic missing ingredient and BAND-MAID was truly a band.
The video you just watched was the first MV for the band and was actually going to be the one and only video as it did poorly initially in Japan but someone posted it to an English Facebook page for Japanese Rock Music and the song and video took off with over 2 million views in 2 weeks on TH-cam. now 9 years later the band is doing really well and have performed in many places outside of Japan like USA, UK, Europe and Mexico. during the pandemic BAND-MAID were doing online concerts for the fans an attracted fans from 67 countries.
MISA on bass and AKANE on drums form one of the best rhythm sections you will ever hear and mad genius and riff master extraordinaire Kanami (lead guitar) has written virtually all of the music since 2016
When Miku formed the band she had never played an instrument but when they added a second singer she felt she could improve the sound if she learned to play guitar and asked Kanami to teach her...she now a very accomplished rhythm guitarist, but in this video "Thrill" she is basically just holding the guitar.
Herman Li of Dragonforce had Miku and Kanami on a Twitch live stream for a couple of hours and it was super interesting, he put a shortened version on TH-cam Dragonforce channel and the full version is archived on his Twitch which Twitch members can access.
BAND-MAID were also chosen to appear in the Netflix action movie "Kate" which included 2 of their songs and DC comics show "Peacemaker" uses BAND-MAIDS "Choose Me" in episode 3.
Now that pandemic is over BAND-MAID will appear at 3 Festivals this year...Download Japan was last weekend, Summer Sonic is this weekend and in Oct when they start their USA tour they will appear at Aftershock Festival in California.
The maids are now all 30ish a brand new EP is on it's way Sept 21.
I suggest having a peak at the maids LIVE with an audience with songs Domination, Play, Real Existence and Onset....that would be a great continuation for you to really see what they can do
Cheers and I hope you enjoy your BAND-MAID journey, it's an awesome ride. just don't expect BAND-MAID to be predictable lol

Japan. Japanese. They are now in their early 30s, but they were mid-20s here. Saiki is the regular lead, but Miku (rhythm guitar) is the founder of the band and recruited all the others, but realized the band needed a harder voice for their music. They have 110+ other songs, and if you never listen to them again, you are an absolute fool.

The video is 7 years old. Today Band-Maid is one of the best rock/metal bands in the world. And this is not an exaggeration. I think good songs for you would be "Rinne" MV, "Real Existence" live, or "Black Hole" live. For the last song you should buckle up though😁

Welcome to the Maidiacs! Believe it or not, that's just the tip of the huge iceberg of musical greatness from this incredible group of ladies and the more you hear from them and get to know them, the more you'll love 'em! Domination, Play, Moratorium, Real Existence, Turn Me On, Onset (instrumental), Freedom - All Live, because that's when they really shine! Thanks!

Since you've already been flooded by us Maidiacs with info about the band, I'll just put it this way... I think there's a strong possibility you'll have something on that shelf behind you that says "Band-Maid" on it very soon. Welcome to The Asylum, MMR! 🕊

Oh, you missed a lot there. But it's never too late to join us Maidiacs. :) With that, welcome to the pigeon-hole of Band-Maid and greetings from the German Maidiacs division. 🙋🏻‍♂
As others have said, this is not even a fraction of what the ladies have to offer. 'Real Existence (LIVE)' or from their MV's maybe something more recent like 'Warning'. You want it harder? Then there's also a live performance of 'Manners' along with the track 'Black Hole', which showcases their versatility quite well. :)

Nice reaction. 🤘😎🤘I'm an old rock and metal head myself. One day TH-cam suggested "Thrill". My thoughts were "Maids? Really? Go home TH-cam you're drunk!" TH-cam insisted so I clicked. Whoa! Not what I was expecting. I liked the song, and checked out the 2 videos that were released after "Thrill". I enjoyed them but I was on a journey of rediscovering Nightwish so I moved on.
A while later TH-cam suggested their live video "onset". I remembered "Hey, they're cool." So I clicked... That live performance literally changed my life for the better. After I watched it I got on social media and told everyone I could about them and the song . "onset" was the BEST new rock instrumental song I had heard in decades. I rabidly listened to everything I could find. BAND-MAID continues to impress me with any new music they release. They can play acoustic to heavy metal ("RINNE" is a good example of metal) and mix all sorts of genres into one song and make it sound great!
To see a good example of their versatility I would suggest the 2 songs' live video "Manners, BLACK HOLE" from their official TH-cam channel. "Manners" is a groovy bluesy "Classic Rock" style song with that BAND-MAID spice. It is one of my all-time favorite "classic rock" songs. "BLACK HOLE" is a 220 bpm sonic assault of progressive instrumentation and fantastically layered vocals. "BLACK HOLE" is currently my favorite BAND-MAID song followed closely by "Corallium" and "Unleash!!!!!".

Hi, Glad you checked Band Maid, I hear the Madiacs coming in (fan base), it definitely is Hard Rock and do many different generes and mixed types of music. Mainly the fan base are very friendly and love to give you as much info as possible.
They are from Japan and of course they were singing in Japanese with little english here and there (as with all their songs.
This video is their first video from 2014, and they were in their early 20´s back then. they have evolved so much since then, they have over 120 song over 7 albums and many singles, new album will be released in September.
You should listen to more music from them, they do have harder and softer songs, but I'm sure you will like their harder songs.
Many Madiacs will give you all the songs you should check, I will suggest some:
    - Play (live)
    - Rinne (mv)
    - Puzzle (live)
    - Domination (live)
    - Dice (mv)
    - Black Hole (live)
    and 114 more songs.......

This is training wheels Band Maid. They get so much better you wouldn’t believe it. I’ve been a rock/metal fan for nearly 50 years and in my opinion they are as good as any rock band ever. And I do mean “any”-and “ever”. It sounds silly because they don’t and likely won’t have the level of popularity that classic rock bands had but, then again, that’s the world we live in now. They are rock with forays into metal. Try “No God” live on their official channel… and the “Rinne” music video. Rinne is probably their most metal song.

Good first reaction to Band-Maid. They are my favorite band and I think you would enjoy some of their latest music that leans more into metal than their earlier works. Also, since you seem to prefer metal, I would recommend checking out Nemophila, a female Japanese metal band, with their song Adabana. I don't think you will be disappointed.

Don't take this the wrong way, but speaking of curiousity- if you seemed to like the music, why would you start off right away by saying "I don't know if I'm going to do another video by them" ? Again, no offense, but to me that is...curious. If I see and hear something that I like straight away, there is no question of me trying to sample more. Are you only doing these things for money, based on a numbers algorithm or something? I saw this video years ago, and instantly bought every single last CD/DVD/Blue Ray etc., etc., I could, and have never looked back. A huge amount of us old guy Rush fans LOVE this band!

You're currently still in a state of denial, as seen many times before, because "I'm an old fashioned metal guy and won't listen to more of such stuff"... But that will change, believe me, you will. And you will be so happy about it 🙂

You might noticed that the girl with Rickenbacker can't actually plays the guitar.
It was because she was an original vocalist of the band. She just gave her role to Saiki to improve the band. Her guitar was just a decoration and she was a guitar holder on the stage back then.
Now she has been approved as a guitarist.

    • @chrisegbertky
      @chrisegbertky 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Talk about balls. She learned to play guitar after this. So imagine the courage it took to go on stage while learning. This ain't no garage band. Surrounded by virtuosos she worked hard to catch up with her sister maids playing AND singing. You could drop Miku in the middle of the Sahara with a kazoo and she would still become a rock star. 💯

You should do more since it's only the tip of what they can do. This was their first video and pretty simple compared to what they do now. They go both harder and softer. They keep you guessing. Lately they have gone harder and faster. Since you did their first, you should maybe check out their latest. They are a hard rock core but they add in punk, metal, blues, jazz, etc. They shine the most in their live videos too. I recommend live Manners and Black Hole, Play, No God.

They're my favorite band (hyperbole alert!) and my life is decidedly better because I discovered them. Their music improves your mood - they make you happy. The songwriting after the 3rd album improves dramatically because they started writing their own stuff.

Band-Maid is a powerful hard rock band of extraordinarily talented young musicians who have accumulated a very large and knowledgeable fan base. Jimmy Page himself attended one of their concerts and was so impressed with the drummer Akane Hirose that he asked to congratulate her backstage about her inspired drumming performance. Tony Visconti, the famous Grammy producer of David Bowe and T. Rex, asked Band-Maid in 2019 to collaborate on a song that he was developing and flew the vocalists Saiki Atsumi and Miku Kobato out to his New York studio to record their parts of the song. James Gunn is a big fan and has used their music in his TV show Peacemaker. The bassist Misa is acknowledged by many as one of the very best playing today. Kanami Tono is the main composer for the group and is skilled as the lead guitarist and riff master. Band-Maid was asked by the director of the Netflix movie Kate to appear as themselves in the film and also had two of their songs played. Several Anime productions have asked the band to write and perform songs especially for their shows. Thrill was the bands very first music video and they haven't looked back since. Their music ranges from tender ballads to hard rock with occasional elements pf jazz, funk, punk, prog and metal. While primarily electric based, they also are accomplished acoustic artists as well. Many consider Band-Maid to be the best rock band in the world today.

There are few times I have been blind-sided by a first time listen of a band and Band-Maid was one of those bands. I happen to believe Band-Maid Is possibly the most important band keeping Hard Rock/Metal/Punk/Pop/Progressive Rock alive and well. They are exceptional instrumentalists that have demonstrated the ability to forge interestingly creative music that incorporates the best of Hard Rock/Metal/Punk/Funk/Pop to form a unique yet familiar sound that is catchy with a unique distinct signature of their own.
They have been prolific songwriters who produced over 120 studio & live tracks over eight years. Their tracks have evolved from a straightforward Hard Rock/Metal to a more Progressive Slant. Their music holds a wide variety of styles which has allowed them to produce tracks that are not predictable yet have a common thread that is distinctly Band-Maid. It is this quality that requires one to digest a minimum of 5 tracks to truly appreciate the greatness of this band.
As an old-school musician in my mid-50's, I have been one who has been cynical of anything new rivaling any of the great music of the past. That was until I became exposed to Band-Maid. These Maidens single-handedly reignited my love for the music that inspired me as a kid. I urge everyone to sample this band starting from their early work to their current stuff that way you can appreciate their progression as a band. I have been a hard critic of most current music and I rarely praise any band that has changed after being exposed to Band-Maid.
This is the one rare band that sounds better live than the studio. And I feel fortunate to have a ticket to experience them live in San Diego when the come to the U.S. in October. This band needs to be illuminated and given the recognition they deserve and I hope their upcoming tour provides them that recognition.

“Thrill” is their first single released in 2015, and they’ve gotten so much better. Band Maid are a Japanese hard rock band sometimes veering into metal. Miku the rhythm guitarist/vocalist founded the band and writes lyrics. Saiki (blue rose) is the lead singer. Miku, the founder, worked in a maid cafe, so she wanted to form a band that plays hard rock while dressed in maid outfits. Band Maid are amazing, with their live performances often surpassing the studio originals. I generally recommend listening to their older songs first to appreciate how they have evolved and grown. You have plenty of songs to choose from, because all their music ranges from good to amazing.

Welcome aboard, MaMe (Massive Metal, get it?). You are embarking on (along with many others - 150 million YT views plus over 30 million reactor plays!) an awesome, progressive, hard-rock journey with 5 incredible women. Here's my intro blurb for those who may be new to Band-Maid:

BAND-MAID’s songs and sound beat with the heart and soul of all rockers. But you’ll also hear heavy influences of Prog, Punk, Metal and Pop, with nice touches of Blues, Jazz, Funk and Grunge. Sometimes they use multiple genres within the same song. Their Composition, Execution, Joy of Playing, Consistency (124 songs with their new album “Unleash” dropping September 21, 2022), Uniqueness, Charisma, Charm and, oh yeah, Cuteness factor, position them as becoming the hard rock Beatles of our time! In other words, they’re destined for mega-stardom.
Each member's personalities are super interesting and their musicianship among the best. Their writing, arrangements and overall sound, especially guitar tones and drums, are kick-ass! Having seen them LIVE, I can honestly say their performance, sound, stage appearance, and band synergy is off-the-rails spectacular!
Band-Maid is the only band in decades where I love nearly EVERY song they’ve done. I have over 70 favorites! "Thrill" (2014) is a great place to start: th-cam.com/video/Uds7g3M-4lQ/w-d-xo.html Their later songs from albums Unseen World, Conqueror, World Domination, Just Bring It, Brand New Maid, and New Beginning drive even more - Warning, No God, Different, Black Hole, Rinne, Blooming, Moratorium, Domination, Clang, Dice, Spirit, Don’t You Tell Me, Turn Me On, Fate, Play, Hide-And-Seek, Secret My Lips, Puzzle, Choose Me, I Can’t Live Without You, and on and on.
But don’t miss out on their powerful, beautifully written, mid-tempo songs like Daydreaming, About Us, Anemone, Endless Story, PAGE, At The Drop Of A Hat, Mirage and Smile... or more punky like After Life, Don’t Let Me Down and Screaming… or funky like Bubble… or bluesy like Manners and The Dragon Cries… or poppy like Start Over… or a bit jazzy like Wonderland… or progressive like No God, Giovanni, and Black Hole… or cultural like the Band-Maiko series… or instrumentals like Don’t Be Long, Onset, Without Holding Back and Going Nuts… or their many acoustic versions like Catharsis and Sayonakidori... and last but not least, their Anime hits like Sense, Glory and Unleash (from their own Anime MV (series?)): th-cam.com/video/7LB_EPS48HE/w-d-xo.html)
And many songs are represented with over 40 well produced music videos. th-cam.com/users/BANDMAID
Most performances should be experienced from their LIVE audience & online OKYU-JI concerts:
     ONLINE OKYU-JI (Feb. 11, 2021) “No God” th-cam.com/video/nAdWnIRjGak/w-d-xo.html
 Tokyo's LINE CUBE SHIBUYA on February 14th “Domination” th-cam.com/video/QbyQCJn6rYg/w-d-xo.html
     ZEPP 2018 “Real Existence” th-cam.com/video/-qQnKILR5u0/w-d-xo.html
 Shinkiba Studio Coast 2017 (Full concerts from the last two songs are on bandmaidprime.tokyo and DVD/BD/CD)
And some of the better quality 2019 tour Fan vids are excellent. Here’s two of what it’s like to see Band-Maid LIVE at super intimate venues:
 Taken by Vladimir Chupin in Hamburg: th-cam.com/video/__1th7ctgMo/w-d-xo.html
     And by JOSER8845 in LA: th-cam.com/video/usWZvlGGDSs/w-d-xo.html.
If you like Band-Maid, make sure to support them by purchasing some concert tickets, CD, DVD/BD & Merch, etc. bandmaid.tokyo
Like most Band-Maid songs, I like them from the get-go but really start to appreciate them after more hearings and seeing their LIVE videos. I'll go back and see an older song like YOLO, Order, Shake That, Freezer, Before Yesterday, Real Existence, Non Fiction Days and Alone, etc. and realize there's no band that can consistently construct and play like Band-Maid.
For fun, check out an awesome, little known "Mega Band-Maid Mix" by DJ Ray of some of their earlier stuff: facebook.com/djrayboston/videos/1004709499579009
    Band-Maid Members:
Saiki Atsumi (Sy-i-Key or Psyche) “Ice Queen" - Lead vocals, arrangements and melodies. At 28 and the youngest, “Sensei” (Teacher) as band members call her, has the last word on many musical decisions. High-heels or sneakers, Sai-chan’s smile melts away her sometimes perceived, coldish persona. Saiki’s powerhouse performances, charisma, and voice focus the experience that’s driven her to the top echelon of hard rock frontwomen... or frontmen!
Miku Kobato (Me-Ku) "Small Pigeon" - Rhythm guitar, vocals, lyricist, 30 years old. “Koba”, as Saiki calls her, is the Band founder and a firecracker MC & PR SpokesPigeon, po! Her “Magic Spell Time” charm and energy ignite the room. Kuruppo! No, no, no… KURUPPO!!
Kanami Tono (Ka-Na-Me) “Princess” - Lead guitar, keyboards, 30 years old, is a prolific writer of most Band-Maid material. Kanami (translates “Song Wave”) is a possessed riff-slayer who’s so damn adorable it hurts. The only thing you want from Mincho is more!
Akane Hirose (A-Ka-Nay) "Gorilla" - Drums, 31 years old, band energizer & co-clown with MISA. Achi’s talents include massive consumption of noodles and bananas, of course, (even during performance!) while revolutionizing rock drumming with relentless drive, dynamics and the kick. This “DrumZilla” is the Party!
MISA (Me-Sa) "Barefoot Assassin" - Bass, 29 years old. An alluring free spirit driving her 5-string to rapturous low-ends while pulling off surprising counter leads with Kanami, off-stage MISA is the band’s goofball ballerina. Sometimes seen as the Mysterious One because she lets her instrument do the talking, the Assassin literally kills it… every note... uniting Band-Maid’s world-class rhythm section. A slug of JB, a slight grin, and let the slappin’ begin… MISA! MISA! MISA!
Maidiacs (Maid-e-acts) - Band-Maid’s crazed yet supportive, knowledgeable and loyal Super Fans.

Nice reaction, and we Band-Maid fans love to answer questions. The core of Band-Maid is hard rock, but they flirt with metal and a lot of different genres. Their songs range from mellow ballads to 220 BPM speed demons. Fast paced is their usual tempo. Live performances are where they shine. Check out Play Live next.

You definitely owe it to yourself to watch many more. DOMINATION (live, 2/14/2020, in front a huge audience in Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan) displays the band’s charisma and chemistry. Their latest single, UNLEASH, will show you how they have continued to progress.
The MAIDS are all about 30yo.
Rhythm guitarist KOBATO (Tiny Pigeon) was a J-Pop singer who was inspired by her experience as a waitress in a maid cafe to form a band that would wear cute maid outfits while playing “cool music”. With support from her label, she used the Internet to recruit like minded musicians, and she eventually realized the need to add a more powerful singer (SAIKI), and crafted the band around a “twin-vocal concept.” Progress was slow and they were about to give up, when THRILL went viral on Facebook. They performed at anime festivals and toured through the US and Europe, gaining popularity, until Covid shut everything down. TH-cam propelled their career forward, with more than 5,000 reaction videos following their new releases and excerpts from streaming concerts. They will play on Sunday at the upcoming AFTERSHOCK festival in Sacramento, and then embark on their third US tour, from coast to cost.
I’m an old Metal head, and this band just makes me so happy. If you take the time, you will see that their recent music is so complex that repeated listening continues to delight as you discover additional details.
For more metallic sounds, check out their songs RINNE (Reincarnation), NO GOD (live), and MANNERS+BLACK HOLE (a live two-fer). There are live versions of MORATIUM and DON’T YOU TELL ME (with an amazing breakdown jam) on another video sharing site.

72 yr old multi genre music lover. Been here since rock began. Band-maid for me is the best rock band today. Like everyone says, live is best. Thrill not written by them & very early. Check out "rinne" mv, "the dragon cries" mv & "blooming" mv, & "manners/black hole" live.

  • @andersmorell5396

Thanks for your reaction. I like Thrill, it is a good song, but as most probably already pointed out it was written for them, their first real breakthrough that probably saved the band; they have come a long way since then and write their own music. As so many have said, it is Band Maid doing Band Maid things, metal or not.
Unseen World is among the best album I ever heard. Have no idea if you would like it, but I guess you would find Warning, No God and Black Hole interesting. My favorite is Manners.
There is a live video of Onset on their channel as well.

Band-Maid is an awesome group and by far my favorite band, not just Japanese, but all-time. You shouldn't give up on this band after this one song. Especially since they didn't even write this one. 100+ songs you cannot go wrong with any of them. You need to watch their live performances. I suggest live songs like Domination, Freedom, Manner/Blackhole, No God, Play, as well as some of their MVs like Warning, Blooming, Sense, Unleashed (just released). I will always like Puzzle, but unfortunately you cannot find a live version on YT. Enjoy your trip down the pigeon hole.

This was their very first music video, from way back in 2014. The same five women have been together since. They are playing some concerts in the USA in October.
At the time this video was made, their label would reject every song they wrote themselves, so they had to record songs written by others. Now they write their own songs, with the occasional collaboration.
They really come alive in front of a live audience. Check out their Official Live videos released in 2020, taken from their last tour before COVID shut everything down.

If you want a single song that sums up what Band-Maid is all about, check out their song "Domination"....but you have to do the live concert version.
The maid outfits was intended to provide a sharp visual contrast to their hard rock (and yes, they're hard rock, not metal) sound. Which plays on a Japanese cultural trope.

The greatest rock band in the world right now! I only discovered these ladies less than a year ago and their unbelievable talent and joy got me completely hooked very quickly. If you only like metal, they probably won't become your favorite band. They are a hard rock band who blends many genres into their songs including metal, pop-punk, jazz, blues and more. They shine most in their live performances as all the Madiacs will tell you (whether you ask or not). The maid outfits are the idea of Miku, the rhythm guitarist, second vocalist, and founder, who was working at a maid cafe in Japan and thought it would be cool to put the image of cute submissive maids with aggressive hard rock. If you do decide to check out more Band-Maid I recommend "Black Hole", "Rinne", or "Onset".

We are a rabid fan base. They are Japanese and this is their first video from 2013. They are around their 30s now and they write their own music. Pick one a little later in their catalog (Manners, Domination, Real Existence or the instrumental Onset) before you get to the new stuff. Band-Maid's genre is Band-Maid and you will hear things in their compositions to delight and thrill you. This is NOT a garage band. these are educated women who will spice up rock with funk, punk, blues, jazz and mess with times in a song to keep you on your toes. I highly suggest you try a live before you decide if you want to move on from Band-Maid. Enjoy!

Certainly they are not a metal band and this is the very first song that got them took off bacn in 2016,
I see your guitars behind so I assume you are a musician yourself, things they make nowadays are VERY much different, ie a lot more complex and technical. They managed to find their own sound/style and incorporate different genres into their songs, that's why they gained more popularity in recent years, so avoid judgeing this band with one single song.

Thanks for the reaction and welcome to Band Maid. To answer just one of your questions they have another 110 songs with a new album coming out next month. Their live performances are usually the best because there is additional content not in the studio version and their stage presence is incredible. This 2015 video was the make-it-or-break-it video for Band Maid. In fact at this point Miku couldn't even play the guitar since she thought she was only going to be a vocalist in the band. However this video did so well it was decided that Band-Maid was going to be a successful project and that gave them the exposure and financial wherewithal to get started. This is before Misa and Saiki started dressing Gothic. Band-Maid is Jimmy Page approved!

BAND-MAID is not a metal band, but they have some pretty hard rock songs with metal elements, for an old fashioned metal head, I would suggest their song Manners/Blackhole (live) or Rinne (mv). While Thrill is a good song, their newer music is written by them and is much more complex, they have also improved their musicianship over the years.

Ok, I got here a little late from some of your other reactions...You have opened the floodgates. They may be the best rock group in the world today (I think they are). They are certainly the most creative.
You are going to get a lot of suggestions. I'm subscribing just to see you dive into this rabbit hole. Problem is most of the links get taken down pretty fast. These are a bunch that are official or unlikely to come down. First, a little background on the girls:
Saiki Atsumi - Lead vocals Born Feb 8, 1994 28 years old
MISA - Bass Born Oct 15, 1992 29 years old
Kanami Tono - Lead guitar Composer and main arranger Born Sept 28, 1991 30 years old
Miku Kobato - Rhythm guitar, backing vocal Born Oct 21, 1991 30 years old
Akane Hirose - Drums Born Dec 14, 1990 31 years old
Miku was working in a Maid Café after being in an idol group that didn’t break through. She envisoned the idea of a maid-band that plays hard rock and metal. She recruited Kanami, after finding a Kanami guitar cover on line; Kanami then recruited Akane, who recruited MISA. Akane and MISA had been students together at the Tokyo Music Academy. The group decided they needed more vocal “oomph”, and collectively recruited Saiki. Miku didn't know how to play guitar when they started, so Kanami has been teaching her. She's become good so fast that she is really adding to the music mix, and Maidiacs are daring to dream of a dual solo.
Next, you have to listen to them live. They are that rare band that sound perfect live, even better than in the studio.
    Freedom (Feb 14 2020) th-cam.com/video/FHpuEqMAcDg/w-d-xo.html
    Domination (Feb 14 2020) th-cam.com/video/QbyQCJn6rYg/w-d-xo.html
    Choose Me (Feb 14 2020) th-cam.com/video/HcqitbXgigU/w-d-xo.html

    Daydreaming (slower ballad, gorgeous): th-cam.com/video/RCaeUkrItyY/w-d-xo.html
If you want more background, I suggest you react to this classic interview. It's hilarious, it's insightful, you will learn their names for good, and their cuteness will destroy your brain. Oh, and they are completely nuts. th-cam.com/video/R4PofsQYwn4/w-d-xo.html

There are over 8 albums and then some. You need to watch a LIVE video - PLAY _ DOMINATION _ FREEDOM - you will enjoy this band if you like rock. There are acoustic songs and metal songs. You have touched on a very talented and very happy band. Be very careful - YOU WILL BECOME A MAIDIAC like the rest of us!!!!
This is a short synopsis of how BAND-MAID came to be and how THRILL became their breakout song. It is compiled from various interviews in magazines as well as comments made by various Japanese sources. I would like to thank those who contributed the information below .
BAND-MAID was formed around spring to summer 2013. There is a hand-painted leaflet by drummer AKANE that the band members were handing out the leaflets in Harajuku. It reads "talented rock maid band" meanwhile they were searching out the direction the band should take.
THRILL was the turning point for the band. THRILL, because it showed what direction they wanted their music to go. Before that, they wanted to do cool songs while wearing cute maid outfits (The Gap) but they did not have a clear idea of what a cool song was. They got their songs from different songwriters then, and they tried out this kind of cool song, and that kind of cool song. But when they did THRILL, they all realized "ah, this is the kind of cool song we want to do for Band-Maid." So THRILL was selected as their first MV to shoot.
The MV for "THRILL" was officially uploaded in November 2014. However, the band was struggling to break out, to the point that they actually had to buy the tickets themselves and send it to friends and acquaintances to come attend their concerts.
With BAND-MAID trying to get off the ground, performing their songs acoustically in small venues (in one of their early videos Miku says, "Please remember just the name.")
During the spring and early summer of 2015 KANAMI and AKANE are asked by their agency to participate in "Mochi and Cheese" another band that was being groomed.
Suddenly, "THRILL" was a hit on the internet in April 2015. In 2 weeks there were 2 million views on TH-cam. At the time they were struggling, wondering if they should continue. The fact that the majority of views were from the West was surprisingly to them. A trip to the Seattle Asian Festival playing to their largest crowd yet, put them on their way. The band has been energetically performing live throughout 2015, but without that "THRILL" hit, KANAMI and AKANE went to Mochi and Cheese and BAND-MAID may have disappeared!
At one point the interviewing host asks why did they all unanimously felt this was the one. Miku and Saiki don't really know. It's just something that surpassed logic, and felt cool to all of them.
The hard rock sound they have now all started from THRILL. So it was by chance that they arrived at THRILL, and not something they knew they wanted from the start. But they all realized this was the direction they wanted to go.
Then came ALONE as the next turning point for BAND-MAID. Alone, was a song in the first major debut album. Kanami was submitting songs for approval all this time, but everything kept getting rejected. She did not give up, until Alone was finally the first approved song. It was the first song that was credited as Band-Maid's, and it felt really good. Since then, they write most of their songs now.
Interviewer: What’s the meaning of the name “BAND MAID”?
Miku: I used to work at a maid cafe, and I thought “I want a band!” So it became BAND-MAID - maids in a band!
Interviewer: Maid outfits aren’t exactly rock ‘n’ roll. What is your ultimate heavy metal costume?
MIKU “Now Band-Maid’s outfits are part of rock n roll, so we pick these!”
Interviewer: Why should people listen to Band-Maid?
MIKU - “We’re not a pop idol group! Don’t judge us on how we look. We want to blow you away with our heavy rock sound.”
Miku Kobato - RHYTHM GUITAR - plays Zemaitis C24MF (Zemaitis Endorsement - with a Signature Guitar called Flappy Pigeon) - EVH Amps
    - Writes the lyrics - Has only been playing guitar for about 7 years. Was the singer but took a back seat voluntarily!
KANAMI TONO - LEAD GUITAR - plays PRS Custom 24 (PRS Endorsement) - Mesa/Boogie Triple Rectifier.
    - Writes the music (one interview she states that she has a database - 2 years worth?!?!)
Misa - BASS GUITAR plays Black Cloud "Smoker" and Privat Reserve (SG Style) bass - (Black Cloud Endorsement) Orange AB200B MKIII Amps
Akane Hirose - DRUMS - Plays TAMA drums with Zildjian Cymbals - Roland KD-A22 (Possibly an Endorsement with TAMA and ROLAND)
Saiki - VOCALS - Sennheiser microphones and DPA Microphones

Love Band-Maid, been my favorite band for years... they are just fantastic!!! Do more videos! From Japan and Japanese language ... they have some songs that are all English, but most are a split between Japanese & English. Thanks for the reaction.

You clicked their oldest video. As a band their sound has evolved significantly. Can't recommend anything because they have something for everyone and for the looks of it you are picky

There goes my hypothesis that you started with their first music video on purpose.
They aren't "metal". At least, not exclusively. They are far to talented and creative to limit themselves to a single genre. They won't even do that during a single song, let alone a whole career.
Try this song, 'RINNE' (reincarnation) for a sample of what I mean. thrash punk metal jazz - th-cam.com/video/CQ9dbEVgZcA/w-d-xo.html

BandMaid really found their audience, maidiacs will kill me for using that word. BandMaid is much more successful thought Europe, meaning they have incorporated much more English into their music.
The band was very raw in this video, Miku the back up singer didn't even know how to play her guitar. She formed the band, but decided her voice was not the right fit for their sound. She stepped away from lead singer and learned to play the rhythm guitar. She is now quite accomplished I might add. BandMaid is the epitome of the Japanese lifestyle. There are no egos getting stepped on. Miku stepped away from lead singer because it was best for the group. Every band members as her time to shine, and trust me they do.

Good place to start but they are so much more than this. This is the video that was a turning point for the band. This convinced their management to keep going backing them. They are best live. You can't go wrong with a live performance. They defy genres. The Gap is the distance between cutesy maid outfits and face melting music. I pity the fool who bases their opinion on this video. Through no fault of your own you are Ike an alien who has landed in the center of the Atlantic Ocean who would think "This planet has no dry land or people or trees." OH and New sub here.

People will tell you how bad this song is. They're exaggerating. It's fine. It just isn't their best. It was their first big music video. This video is worth watching just to see MISA (bass) and Saiki (vocals) in Maid outfits. They don't wear them anymore.
You should react to any of the more popular official live videos. Onset is an instrumental. Choose Me and Play are super fun and flirty. The others are just really great songs. Can't go wrong with a live. Domination is always good.

If you want a more "metal" sound form them I guess Rinne would be a good choice.

Band-Maid is not Metal but if you would like to experience some Japanese female Power/Thrash Metal, I suggest giving Lovebites a listen. They sing in English and both their guitarists are insane shredders. You will be blown away, guaranteed. Check out "Holy War" live at Zepp Diver City 2020.
