"Weighted" keys are very important if you are practicing with a goal of, or are also playing on, acoustic pianos. It is quite unusual to have that at this price. I'm of the belief that every home should have a piano (especially if there are kids) but one of these will do just fine.

The Donner seems like a good choice for a beginning student aspiring to play difficult classical pieces but does not have the space or budget to maintain a wood-based piano. It is great that it comes with a decent foot pedal, 200 plus rhythms and voices, good speakers, music stand and features a recording function. The connectivity and output jacks combined with the speakers make it a functional recital or performance instrument. Nevertheless, the Yamaha P-125 or the Casio 1000/3000 seem like better choices [in my opinion] as they seem to offer the possibility of fulfilling a student musicians creative and performance potential better.

Jeremy, thanks for all your reviews. I have a question about something you stated. At the 1:50 mark you mention the DEP-20 has graded hammer action. But when I look at reviews on Amazon, I keep reading that all the keys are weighted equally. Additionally, the photo and description from Donner makes no mention of graded weights. Can you please confirm whether it is or isn’t graded (Heavier on left, lighter on right)? I’m hoping to purchase this weekend to take advantage of cyber Monday sales. Thanks in advance.

    • @cesar_m.p.

Hi Jeremy, ... as an addition to my previous note: If you can find only mini-sized arranger keyboards with more than 61 keys, I think those also would be appreciated by the people wh want absolute mobility. Mini-key MIDI controllers are out of the question as they need a computer or cellphone and all mobile apps supporting wireless MIDI require constant Internet connection, and I do not consider an Ipad (or any other tablets) as a real mobile setup because they have bad tiny sound so if you want a decent music, you must go with a decent bluetooth speaker pair too. Thanks: Andrew

I was DELIGHTED when I bought a Williams Legato 88 key electronic piano for $35 at a local variety store, 3 years ago. I found they were going for $275 on Amazon. The keys, however, are not "weighted". You may imagine I am familiar with this concept. AND I've kept an eye out for a Casio weighted keyboard. No problem they've got them. $550 to $750. So....the Donner DEP-20 has this beat. Don't apologize for promoting it!

@ Mark Hugo, I was delighted to thank the employee at the Guitar Center I shop at for allowing me to waste my time trying the Williams Legato III while on sale for $229. I recall saying if there's anything else in here better but no more than around $75 higher in price, save me some time if you know I'm always buying Yamaha keyboards and all other brands I own and play are still around from back in the day. This GC also knows that if I'm there looking for a particular guitar that it will be a Fender and most likely a Strat. Now a Williams Legato for $35 I'll buy just to tinker with and see if I can make it better without people noticing that I've modified it. Sometimes I'll have better success by the modification to a particular keyboard but I won't be able to make the mods within the original layout of a keyboard but better to have an access panel with certain mods housed inside an add-on plastic casing I've made from another keyboard that's only good for parts. I must say that the Donner he just reviewed sounded better over my tablet than the Williams Legato III sounded in person. Luckily I looked up and saw the M-Audio Keystation 88 machII with semi weighted keys on sale and now I believe the regular price of $229. I have it connected to a rack mount Yamaha TG500.

Hi Jeremy, I am from Hungary, Europe. In 1991 I''ve bought a little Yamaha arranger keyboard, an absolutely simple one, although it had split and some automatic, single-finger accompaniment for the left hand. The thing was fully FM-synthesis, no MIDI, worked on 4 AA batteries only, had 120 fairly bad voices and a single 1/4 inch headphone out, but it had a single-line numeric keypad. I liked it, but not for its sound or capabilities, but know what for? It had mini keys, may be even mini-mini keys. So it was very-very portable. The worst and cheap $50-99 beginner/kid keyboards have at least a lightyear better sound in this years, but I miss for some years a fairly good, probably Yamaha PSR-E373-level arranger keyboard with mini keys! I live in a space-restricted apartment, have no room for a full-size 61-keys arranger. Please, suggest for me (and for the others with the same problem) a decent 61-key arranger keyboard with mini keys! Thanks in advance: Andrew

I'm a drummer w. 30+ years experience took up the keyboards recently and I'm addicted. I've graduated from a cheap mustar keyboard, to a not as cheap Yamaha e363.. all 61key. This keyboard is so tempting considering the bang for the buck factor, and it's got a 4.9 star rating on Amazon out of like 2800+ reviews now! Wondering if it has a good fender Rhodes sounding tone on it's menu?

Quick update - piano came quickly, 2 days after ordering. it's a substantial piece of equipment, box is nearly 30 pounds. Couldn't wait to give it to my daughter, she's been using it for the past three days and loves it. Great feel, sound and a ton of features. I wish I'd gotten it sooner. I'd recommend getting an x or z stand if you don't have one... Longevity is always a key question with products like this, but thus far, I am very happy with this purchase.

The ongoing question of “does brand A sound 5 times better than brand Z to justify the price” is answered at the 6:02 mark. Perhaps I’m in the < 10% of people (per other videos) that can tell the difference.
Having said that, the sound quality is far better than the cost suggests and anyone looking to spend even as far as $750 ought to take it under serious consideration.

But after experiencing the joys of a hammer-action keyboard, I'm going to buy this Donner keyboard! It's remarkable that I paid well over $1000 for my K4 with synth keys and 16 note poly and now I can buy a weighted hammer-action keyboard with 128 simultaneous notes! I think the only "advantage" the K4 has is the ability to create new tones and save them.
Jeremy, thank you again for your always wonderful reviews!

I was hoping for Jeremy to do a review on this before black friday but the amazon reviews and the feature set were so compelling that I had to pull the trigger. I bought it as a holiday gift for my 8 year old who is learning to play. I want to give it to her as a surprise but I don't think I'll be able to wait that long! after reading the review, I want to open it up and play with it myself! Thanks for reaffirming my purchase Jeremy. I just have one question for you...I saw you mention that Donner had better features but lower quality than a Yamaha P45 for example. However, in the review, you raised no concerns about the feel of the keys or the sound quality. My daughter is a pianist, so these are the two most important things for me. what quality concerns do you have related to sound quality and keyboard feel? I trust you and I'm happy to pay the 100 more for the P45 if it is MUCH better than the Donner DEP 20 in those respects. Anyhow, you are great at what you do. I'll drop an update on this thread to let everyone know how she likes it. Everyone - one last thing, make sure to watch the ads that play during Jeremy's videos. It's how he gets paid for his work. Buying these keyboards, shooting and editing these videos isn't cheap. It's the least we can all do for the man!

What a surprise! I've never even heard of this brand. The sounds are very nice..the piano, of course, but the ethnic sounds are amazing. I wonder what the guitar sounds like.
I think for a student learning piano, it would be really satisfying and especially help them get used to the weighted action of a real piano. I can't remember if it had a touch sensitivity adjustment. I'll have to go back and see. I like this keyboard.
I can think of other arranger keyboards that might have more features for recording and more complex drum and style choices, but for a a dedicated 88 key weighted digital piano .. and considering other 88 key choices in that price range .. I don't think you can beat it at that price. There are still a lot of sound choices, too. Really a surprise. What a great Christmas gift and it wouldn't break the bank.
Really loved this review ... I appreciate that you feature quality first-experience keyboards and digital pianos that are affordable.. (It's the piano teacher in you .. ;) ..btw, I got my PSR-W310 today :) .. FUN! Really like the piano sound. I think I will use this one to learn the world of DAW so I won't be reviewing for a bit.. Keyboards are so addicting! :) I have to say that now this will be my go-to piano sound over the CTX-800. Both strings and piano were greatly improved).

Hi Jeremy, in your review you said that the keys are scaled, with the lower keys being firmer and the higher keys being lighter, but in the description of the piano it just says it’s weighted keys whereas their higher-end model has scaled weighted. Can you please clarify for this model? Does the touch setting allow you to set this up? Thank you!

New subscriber here. I, too, came upon the Donner line of digital keyboards. The company gets rave reviews for its customer service--Yamahàs c/s makes me not want to buy their products. But your excellent video cleared up some concerns I read about the poor speaker power and the weighted key touch sensitivity. I am 70 and want a decent keyboard to learn from before I plunk down $5,000 for a Clavia775 :)
