  • Being that Alternators are the essential part of battery life in a vehicle, you will see many builds in the basshead community with more than one alternator installed in the engine. It is important to know the proper way to setup this method and what equipment you will need to complete the job. The ammount of alternators can determine the longetvity of your ability to do demos.
    In this video, JP answers a Frequently Asked Question from the comment section concerning alternator installation as well as the importance of alternator brackets.

      Let me just tell you what I have. I have a mechman internally regulated 370 amp direct replacement for my factory alternator that I want to run my factory system. And I’ve got a externally regulated mechman 370 amp alternator that I want to run by battery bank so I can turn the volts up higher. This is what I’m trying to wire up in my truck. Doesn’t matter how the external regular wires up? Does it need to wire up to the battery system that is going to charge or does it matter where it gets it’s 12v reference from?

    Question JP looking for an answer or suggestion on running tweeters. I have 10 4ohm tweets I'm looking to run my 6.5s are component sets so I have 4 crossovers can multiple tweeters be hooked up to the crossovers should I run 4 of them from the head unit or do I need another 4 channel amp. Also is it too risky to run tweets off of an amp even with gain way down. 6 of them are 40 watt RMS and 4 are 120 is it safe to drop them below the 4 ohm because I don't believe there is a way to run them all and keep the 4 ohm impedance. Thank you hope that all makes sense

My question is 2 parts. How many batteries would be needed for say a 400 amp mechman? (would a single high capacity battery be enough?) I have a 2004 F-150. It’s running at 12 volts. I have a high amp alternator in the stock location. I installed a dual alternator setup on it. I have dual agm batteries under the hood. The second alternator is a Mechman 400 amp Elite Series alternator. When I first wired the setup up, I wired both alternators going to the batteries. It was ok at the beginning, but basically the next day the battery light in the dash was on and it caused my truck to rev higher. With my truck in gear and my foot on the brake, rpm’s would be right around 1,000. I really had to keep my foot on the brake pedal or the truck would just want to take off. I couldn’t keep it like that. The setup now, and has been for a while now, is the stock location high amp alternator runs the truck and 5 of the vocal speakers amplifiers and charge’s the two batteries under the hood. The second alternator, the Mechman, charges another agm battery and 2 superbank caps. Totally separate from the other alternator. This charging system runs my 6 subwoofer amplifiers and 2 more vocal speakers amplifiers. It runs perfectly fine this way. I have volt meters hooked up under the hood and on my dash. Maybe a problem or a reason why I can’t wire both alternators together is because of this. When my truck is running after a minute or two, the voltage on my truck side, which is dictated by the engine computer, is around 14.2 - 14.4,5. The voltage coming out of the Mechman is higher, 14.8 - 15 volts. The Mechman is a one wire GM alternator. I don’t know if the different voltages of the two alternators is messing with the computer on my truck or something else when they are wired together, but I can’t do this in my truck. Because the voltage is computer controlled, I don’t know. I emailed Mechman about this and one of their technicians told me to give them a call and explain it to them, but I called half a dozen times and couldn’t get anyone to answer the phone. I had it posted about what was happening with my setup and Steve Meade commented about that I had them wired up wrong. He said I’d be able to hook up 10 alternators up and not have a problem. I asked what I could be wiring up wrong and he never left a response. He’s busy and I’m sure not worried about me, lol. That’s cool, I understand. I follow him. I watch the videos. But if anybody has any suggestions on why I can’t run both alternators together on my truck, I’ll listen. I don’t know if I want change my setup. It’s working good and I don’t have any problems. In the beginning I didn’t want to have two different charging systems in my truck, but that’s what I have to have I guess, lol.

      Ya you need to put a diode on your sense wire for the comp ran alternator it will trick the computer into thinking depending on diode size that the system is a volt under the charge rate the high amp alt is high enough the comp thinks battery is full cycling on and off the alternator it's a maybe I run my truck like thisa 01 f150 triton

  • @gritpump
    @gritpump 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    An alternator and battery in parallel with another alternator and battery would have the same voltage, and the current would flow towards the area of least electric potential, which would be the low battery. There are vehicles that run multiply alternators in parallel.

    So.. how do you keep the amperage under control to meet the lithium batteries expectations? Or do you? Does a high amperage configuration lower the life on the batteries?

    • @MazdaBass971
      @MazdaBass971 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      If your running all alternators together on 1 bank amperage isn't what you need to worry about, its about the set charge voltage, if they are both set to around 14.4 or so then its just plug and play. For the rated amperage, well you simply combine both of them, (Example) like the ones in the video, 270 + 400 = 670amps total. Realistically you won't see that full amount counting in heat soak and factory electronics.. Rule of thumb, take off 30 to 40% of your total alternator power for that.
      As far as is it bad for the battery's with high amperage? No, Its actually worse for the alternator not so much the battery if its having to output its maximum current constantly. So its best to have a battery bank large enough to buffer the power your running, lithium banks are great for that, but of course the main thing is always have enough alternator power regardless, because that's what matters the most, the bigger the battery bank the bigger the power your running results in the more alternator you will need.

    When both charge the common house battery:

    3. How are alternator REGULATORS and isolators affected themselves?

    • @hopskustomaudio

      Yes it will be fine. The alternator is only going to produce the amount of amperage that is required for the vehicle. So even if you have a 400 amp but the vehicle only requires 60 amps total then alt it is only going to produce that 60 amps to cover it. It will only produce 400 amps when it needs to.

    How do the electric cars deal with alternators? For example, I'd love to drop 12-15K watts into an Ioniq5, but I have no clue how this would work, given the elec nature of the car. Thoughts? Do they make alternators for them? What about batteries?

    • @91CavGT5
      @91CavGT5 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have a KIA Niro which mechanically is identical to your Ioniq. My Niro is a 2018 HEV(hybrid electric vehicle) and not the PHEV(plug in hybrid electric vehicle) model.
      On hybrids, they don’t have alternators. They have DC to DC converters. This takes the high voltage battery pack(240-360 volts for our cars) and converts it down to 12v. On my car, it is rated for 130 amps.
      Luckily, on the HEV model, the 12v battery is a lithium battery that’s around 30 amp/hr.
      All of this means the factory electrical system can support around 1k watts. I’ve got a JP8 on a single Savard HiQ 12” subwoofer and unless the amp is clipping, the voltage stays above 13.4 volts all the time. One trick is to keep the headlights on. This keeps the voltage in the 13.8v range. But if you drive with your headlights off then the voltage can dip down to almost 12 volts before the DC to DC converter kicks in.

    • @91CavGT5
      @91CavGT5 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheGodofSEO you really can’t unless you spend a LOT of money to upgrade the DC to DC converter. To my knowledge there’s no company doing this for the KIA or Hyundai’s. You might be able to find a company that does it for Toyota Prius that might be able to do it. But once again, it won’t be cheap.

If you have 3 370 amp alts you dont need the full 1110 amps they can produce all the time when driving normal around town that 1110 amps will be made when current demand is increased.

    I’m doing 2 12” SA v2’s in my 2019 Accord 2.0t. I’ve got the SFB 3000D. 0 gauge kit and a D4S LTO 3k-5kw 12 lithium battery to run in the back. Do you think I will be okay? Not sure if I should get a new under the hood batt and or A high output alternator. Just wanna make sure everything will be set. Got a install scheduled the 12th of January.

    2 400amp alternators on the same battery.
    Do I get 800amp or is it 400amp?

    • @the-dullahan
      @the-dullahan ปีที่แล้ว

      You would get up to 800 amps, but your actual amperage generated depends on a lot of factors. Also, any time you are running multiple alternators to one single feed, they should be run through a voltage control unit, which takes the input from each alternator and sends the output to the battery or batteries. This keeps the alternators from "seeing" one another and causing issues with performance or causing damage to one or both alternators. This is why all vehicles (cars, boats, etc) which come from the factory with multiple alternators will always use voltage controllers.

      You can use any batteries you like, regardless of amperage, as long as your voltage matches. You should, however, always isolate batteries from one another.

    • @hopskustomaudio
      @hopskustomaudio 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Goz could be at the amp or even at the battery. I would do a big 3 upgrade and then ground the amp to the frame instead of the body. 99% of the time if it's turning off it's either bad ground or not enough power to supply the load and voltage to the amp is dropping below the voltage it needs to operate.

      So grab some card board design a alternator bracket and market that stuff and if you have a problem with the belt just add a bigger pully or smaller to the belt tensioner on your Honda. Good luck to you everything has an answer in this world. Make friends at a local machine shop or take a welding class so you could build custom Amp racks. Or take a basics to DC electrical course and figure out how to generate enough amps from capacitors and batteries to build the baddest systems on the planet. Or learn fiberglass that way you can build custom walls and do body work on Lamborghinis for a living.

    That didn't answer the question at all. All you stated is that you can run them together or you can separate. And everybody knows that the voltage is constant. But you said absolutely nothing about amperage. Your only comment was duh this one's bigger this one smaller you'll get more from the bigger. I'm pretty sure the question was if the amps from both add together!

    where does the turn on wire go to for the secondary alternator go to the amp turn on?

    • @the-dullahan
      @the-dullahan ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The alternator turn on wire goes to the harness for the alternator. Which harness you need depends on what alternator you have. As such, this wire should run from your car electrical system to your alternator, using whatever style harness your alternator requires. You could patch the wire into the car electrical however you choose, but the ideal and simplest location would be to do so out of your factory alternator harness.

      @@flip_flop_farmer there is no such thing as an alternator which doesn't use a turn on wire. Check your alternator again, there is someplace for the harness to connect.
