So I’m an infectious disease nurse practitioner, I had been breaking out and kept putting differin on my skin… it took me months to pay attention to the fact that it was probably fungal! I had some clotrimazole ointment and tried it one night just as an experiment and the next day my breakouts on my cheek were like 50% better! Insane. I don’t know dermatology well but am learning through your videos! I think the culprit was a very heavy CC cream I was using + wearing a mask all day

I have been using your suggestions Dr Dray for 4 months now and have never felt so confident and beautiful! I use the Nizoral shampoo on my face about 3-4 times a week. I lather it on, leave for 5 minutes and rinse. I do this after a cleanse with Cereve Hydrating Cleanser. Afterwards I use the Clotrimazole 1% and the little bumps and itching are gone! I only need to use the Clotrimazole and Nizoral during a breakout of irritating itchiness. I have had 2 bouts of fungal acne in 4 months and that is probably due to the humid weather we have been having. I am SO grateful to you sharing your knowledge and expertise. THANK YOU!

I remember watching a video you did, a while back, about fungal acne. It was when I was dealing with it, myself! I was SO desperate to find SOMETHING to make it go away. Then I found your video and I started washing my face with my husband’s anti-dandruff shampoo and applying lotrimin, afterwards, to the affected area. I noticed a difference almost immediately upon doing that! It took about 2 weeks for it to clear up completely... and the anti-dandruff shampoo was pretty drying on my skin (aloe Vera gel really helped a lot to soothe and moisturize)... but I was SO thankful to have found your video because that is the ONLY thing that I tried that actually worked to completely heal my fungal acne! 😊❤️
I know this comment was from a year ago but if you can remember, how often did you use the anti dandruff shampoo? I started using mine once every other day then stepped it up to every day for the past two weeks and there was a slight change but it suddenly got worse even though I haven't changed any of my products.
@@lindsaygutierrez4012 I used it just once a day because it was severely drying on my dry, sensitive skin. But that in combination with the Lotrimin (or whatever brand antifungal cream you prefer… just compare the ingredients with lotrimin to see if it is the same active ingredient and that should be fine.) doing both of those things together is what REALLY helped so much!! Using just the dandruff shampoo alone wouldn’t heal it super quickly. Adding the anti-fungal cream to the affected areas after using the dandruff shampoo will help you SO so much!!! Even applying the the anti-fungal cream several times a day if you’re not wearing makeup. That’s what worked the best for me! I know you must be going through hell right now so I do hope that helps you in some way and I hope that you are able to get some relief soon!!!
i’m going through the same thing right now. i use head and shoulders shampoo in the AM & then use Lotrimin cream afterwards. is it safe to use sunscreen on top of the Lotrimin cream? I really don’t want to go in the sun without sunscreen. I’m specifically using ISDIN eryfotona ageless (the tinted one).
I understand your perspective regarding fungal acne safe ingredients and can appreciate your stance. However, for the last year I have used folliculitis scout to identify potentially aggravating ingredients in my skincare. I was bump and flake free for almost a year when I adhered to "FA safe" ingredients in my leave on products. Seems every product that works for me ends up being FA safe (using folliculitis scout). The ones that don't always have several FA aggravating ingredients. Seems like polysorbates and oils are the main offenders. Of course other factors exacerabate FA, but it is good to be aware of which substrate combinations you are applying to your skin and using these websites to help aid in selecting skincare that may aggravate your skin can be helpful. I can attest to the fact that not one FA safe product recommended by folliculitis scout has been a disappointment! I do know there are products here and there that might work even though they have FA aggravating ingredients, but I have to buy and try with caution.
Nizoral worked like a charm for my fungal acne. I have only used it twice now and the bumps are 90% gone! I cannot believe I waited so long to finally treat them with this stuff! So happy and thankful for the recommendation!
@@sherlyw5799 Mine are flesh colored and were itchy. I havent gone to a dermatologist, so im only guessing it was fungal acne. But this dandruff shampoo has helped make the bumps go away.
I've been using Paula's choice salicylic acid exfoliant for regular acne since January and, amongst all the other changes, I've noticed I don't have fungal acne in my forehead anymore! Thank you for your videos, I've learnt so much from you ❤
Currently using this twice a week but my bumps have turned into breakouts, did this happen to you and should I continue ? I have read a purge is normal
I use the Z-bar for face and have oily skin. It’s great and does not strip oils away and makes my face feel soft. This helps reduce inflammation with my acne - reduced fungal acne but still attain regular acne. I choose this product over high end items that I’ve used in the past. I also use the head and shoulders for hair.
I use Nizoral shampoo for my seborrheic dermatitis. It works great! A dermatologist told me I could use it on my face, and I do when I have breakouts. I use it around my nose, my chin, forehead, and around my ears where I get flare ups, which don't happen too often anymore.
@@Uzielg710 On my face, I just use it on spots where the dermatitis shows up, and leave it on for a minute or two, not too long or it will make your face red. I don’t use it all over my face, and I only do it once or twice a day depending on how bad the flare up is. It takes a few days to clear up. Though my dermatologist also said that if you keep the dermatitis off your scalp, it will stay off your face. So whenever I wash my hair, I use the Nizoral shampoo on my scalp (not all of my hair, I still use regular shampoo for my hair), paying close attention to my hairline and behind my ears where I get flareups. Occasionally I will still get flareups on my face but not too often if I wash my scalp regularly. Hope that helps! Edit: It goes without saying, do not get it in your eyes, it’s burns like 🤬
The product that has made the biggest difference in my fungal acne was the Sulfur ointment by De La Cruz. I personally think anyone suffering with this condition should give it a shot.
Believe it or not but I can't get head and shoulders shampoo in my area. But I can buy Ketoconazole cream over the counter, I can't believe it. It's been 5 days and the left side of my forehead is smoothing for the first time! For anyone trying this, please wash your face afterwards because even though it is a cream, it made my forehead to have a little breakout. Thank you for sharing your insight dr dray! I truly appreciate it from the bottom of my heart :)
Assalaam Alaikum everyone. Have a great day everyone. Have a blessed day and stay safe out there, lol. We need to stay United no matter what we are going through or the circumstances, lol. ❤️❤️❤️
Came here to thank you. This video seems to have ended almost a year of problems. Briefly, my GP/family doctor and I DID come up with the right diagnosis, but unfortunately as non-derms, we didn't know precisely how to use it. And three dermatologists (!) thereafter gave incorrect diagnoses. It also explains why everything dermatologists prescribed made it so much worse. Sadly, I think this says GPs, patient instincts, and online influencer dermatologists may sometimes be superior to the practicing dermatology professionals.
Thank you so much. There’s SO MUCH misinformation being peddled to mallesezia folliculitis and Seb derm patients by skincare manufacturers. Your jaw would DROP. As always, great content! ❤️
Thank you Dr Dray. I girmly believe that I got it after constantly wearing a face mask during Covid. I never even had acne as a teenager, but now have these stubborn clusters of small bumps on my forehead and chin. I am eager to try one of the recommended products. Love your informative videos
Oh my goodness I believe this is what I have! Definitely not on my face, but elsewhere. Everything you explained, makes sense to me. Thank you Dr Dray! Also I love your earrings 💕
Another option for leave on salicylic acid is the toner, Pore Release by the brand Hero Cosmetics (the company that sells those pimple patch). They run $20 for 100ml and if your timing is right, they've great offers like a bundle deal (get 100ml for $20 and another same size bottle free)
I'm on meds for mast cell activation disorder but my doc isn't very knowledgeable regarding skincare haha. I'm finding I'm breaking out with eczema, herpes simplex and possibly fungal acne across my forehead lately, probably because of my numerous meds. I've bought nizoral and tolerate it so hopefully that will help for my forehead. Looking so beautiful today, your skin is amazing! X
Hey Dr Dray I just wanted to thank you for helping clear up my horrible acne. It has been a year since I watched this video and I have been using zinc soap as well as paula’s liquid exfoliant. I have been getting a lot of compliments on my skin, thank you!
Dr Dray, please discuss thoroughly laser hair removal. Best lasers and cooling mechanisms, how many % of hair is removed and for how long, is an eye disease for instance a contradication?
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and explaining the science behind skin care. You are a lovely lady who is very generous with your time and knowledge. You rock!
I pray you reply back. I have severe folliculitis on my legs. It began last year around April of 2021. I shaved my legs and my legs literally had pimples all over them within three days. I was advised by my doctor to stop shaving, so I did. I prescribed numerous antibiotics but it still would come back even though I wasn't shaving. I started seeing a dermatologist because the itching was so bad, she prescribed me clindamycin gel and lotion, clobetasol, and minocycline pills. Even with all this and bathing with panoxyl, the bumps go away one week and then they come back. I guess my question to you is, why does this keep happening to me? I've been shaving since I was 13 I'm now 30, the issue started at 28/29. What's wrong with my legs? Will I be on these meds forever. My legs are severely scared. I was also given hydroquinone but I stopped using it because if I can't solve what's causing the bumps then there's no need to fix the scars only for them to keep coming back. Any advice would be greatly appreciated❤
Thank you so much for all the info! I've been dealing with such itching on my face today was simply unbearable! So happy I found your video! I have the Cera Ve SA face wash, not sure why I haven't been using it, do I brought it out, washed my face ahhhhh, then I went out to Walgreens and bought the Cera Ve SA lotion for rough and bumpy skin, a little burning but then ahhhhh! Thank you 🙏🏽
You are the best science teacher I’ve ever had. You really make learning this subject so accessible, for me especially - a below average science student. Thank you, Dr. Dray. ❤
I just bought another Nizoral 2% from my pharmacy last week for me and my father to use. We both have SD. I almost went for the Selenium sulfide, to try again, but read the note that said it might discolor white hair, and I have a sprinkling of white throughout my hair, and my dad is 74 so almost has no color left. :)
Fungal acne seems impossible to get rid of :( I hate it and can never find anything to work. And it’s even harder because I have fungal and regular acne so it’s so hard to find something that works for both
I use nizoral under the breasts if I get a fungus and it works like a charm... My son has a gtube and i cleanse with zinc shampoo around the skin area and put a dab of zinc oxide as a barrier to acid and moisture. Ect. These products work great
Thanks so much for this information dr. Dray! I truly learn a lot from your videos. There are so many misinformation out there about fungal acne especially about "fungal acne safe products". I live in a tropical climate and once people started to find out about fungal acne, everyone was searching for "fungal acne safe products" because they all thought they have fungal acne.
Fungal acne safe IS REAL. I highly suggest going to SimpleSkincareScience. It’s a blog, entirely free- chock to the brim with scientific information about malassezia. But malassezia yeast does in fact feed on certain ingredients in your routine- leading to more intense, more congested & more damaging breakouts
Does glycolic acid help with fungal acne or just salicylic? Super helpful and informative as well! I was about to order a haul of "fungal acne safe" products!
So Certain makeup doesn’t help feed fungal acne?!! I’ve been following this guide trying to narrow down the makeup I use that feeds the fungal acne and I’m absolutely driving myself crazy!!😭🥺
Nizoral 2% is OTC in Belgium, it's not in regular drugstores though, you do have to get it from a pharmacy counter. We just don't have the 1% on the market here. So if it's not too bad (my SD) then I just use Head & Shoulders instead. And thanks to your tip of letting it sit a while before rinsing it actually works. Makes sense, you let the Nizoral sit too, right? :)
my tinea versicolor is gone after taking oral anti-fungal medicine, now I need to deal with the uneven color issue as well, turns out the skin under neath the rough skill is brighter, it used to be darker when the rough layer on the top, haha
The last year I have been struggling so much with back acne. I’ve never had acne ever especially on my back and shoulders. I’ve used everything for acne! Than I was looking up some other treatments and ran across fungal acne. So now I’m going to try Nizoral and an anti fungal. If this doesn’t work after a month or two I’m going to look into a dermatologist. This makes sense though, I’ve tried everything else.
can you do a video about how to get rid of dry flaky patches on the face? after I apply a morning moisturizer and sunscreen, dry flaky patches appear around my cheeks and mouth within an hour.
So righttt. I had big personal occasion and I bought a lot of new ' good fungal 'makeup and realized that it doesnt matter because after a few minutes it got worse. I guess because it synced in my porce though it was 'ok malesizia'.
Hi Dr Dray! Just wanted to know if there are things we can do to address the root of the problem like possibly any diet or lifestyle changes to reduce fungal acne ?
Hi Maureen, I'm not a doctor and I'm not who you asked but I wanted to pitch in as I see your question has gone unanswered and I personally have treated myself for fungal overgrowth. I treated myself for candida yeast, but a lot of candida cleanses contain broad spectrum anti fungals. These will be ingredients like black walnut hull and oregano oil. They are holistic (not homeopathic that is something else) so they will be herbal. Rigimens like canxida three step have the antifungal pill and a probiotic pill. Probiotics treats the microbiome imbalance that she mentioned earlier and is an important part. This is an internal and holistic approach that is different than what a doctor will prescribe. A doctor will prescribe an antifungal like fluticazole (not sure if it's spelled right) for yeast infection but for your face. If you want to get to the root of it adding an antifungal cleanse will be very helpful as well as limiting sugars. Personally I break out from eating sugar and get tiny uniform itchy bumps as well as yeast infection in other places. Candida crusher on TH-cam covers the ins and outs of going on a full fungal protocol, but really taking a regimine in pill form is your bff. With all this being said I'm going to be trying the products she mentioned because I see value in both pharmaceutical antifungals and holistic remedies especially in tandem.
@@gundog4273 Hi! Thank you so much for the response. Over the past months, I’ve tried a few remedies and I’ve definitely seen some progress. Will try these out as well!
@@maureen572 my favorite but hands down most expensive one was made by plexus and it was the triplex combo. It is not specifically for treating fungal overgrowth but it does. The wonders it did for me were amazing. I also did canxida and there are ones on Amazon. Best wishes!
Thank you for your super helpful vids!! I would also love to eradicate the term “non-comedogenic”!! 🥴 I believed that one for so long until I realized there were MANY ingredients that can moisturize and my skin cannot tolerate any type of extra oils...only oil-free products for me now!!
Oh and my banana boat simply protect sunscreen, waterproof, actually turns into milk on my face when I start to perspire when Outdoors. It's white again and very drippy. Does that mean it's not waterproof? We're talking about only after 40 minutes or so of working in my yard. Is that unusual? Or is that expected, is that the look?
@@sable7114 Not sure about that but sunscreens can run when we sweat. That's probably one of the reasons they need to be reapplied and you definitely don't want it getting in your eyes.
@@db-gb5xi thanks but interesting to note it was not the upper part of my face, I did have on a sweatband, protective glasses, a baseball cap, and mask do to the allergies and my face literally look like someone had thrown milk and to my face it was literally that wet and drippy on the lower portion. Trying a different sunscreen today for comparison. I've never had that experience before and I have worked in my yard for as long as three hours at a time with no issues like that. Maybe it's because of mask use though I've always used a mask while in the yard due to my allergies way before this pandemic. I hope you are having a good day!
@@db-gb5xi okay I tried Kroger's dupe for the Coppertone sport today for an hour and a half of raking in the yard and it did not milk up the way the other did. It stayed on very well. Wonder what the difference is. Better check this to see if it has fragrance in it and yes it does, dang!
you should use the treatment no longer than 4 weeks everyday or dependable on what you are using 3 times a week and after that continue to use it once a week only to prevent it from coming back
I disagree. I had a madecassoside fluid from Korea with no English on the label. It made the fungal acne worse. I looked it up on one of those sites you dislike and it helped. If you have ever had fungal acne then you know that it flares worse and can react poorly with your regular skin are products your skin normally loves.
@@wanda247b Madecassoside Fluid (toner) from A'pieu. They make a cream version that IS fungal acne safe. It did NOT cause my fungal acne. But if you have fungal acne, use those sites to switch to all fungal acne free products so as to not give the yeast anything to feed off of in addition to using medicine to treat the fungal acne. I leaned my lesson as I couldn't get my skin clear or keep it clear until I switched to fungal acne free. I had the fungal acne for over a year as it kept coming back. I kept using FA safe products for an additional 3 months after it had completely cleared to avoid a recurrence. FA free products don't treat the FA but it won't feed the yeast so it inhibits it's growth. Still need medicine like Stridex salicylic acid pads, sulfur, etc to clear the FA. I finally figured out the product that likely caused my original FA outbreak. It was Secret Key Snail Serum. Mushroom was at the top of the ingredient list. I went to use it up as it was going to expire soon and realized immediately I was in trouble. Most products are NOT FA safe and that is just fine. The issue for me was the Secret Key Snail Serum (with 🍄) triggered the FA outbreak and everything I used after that that wasn't FA Safe would irritate and make it worse. It was giving the yeast what it needed to feed on and grow. It isn't necessary to always stick to FA safe products indefinitely once you are cleared.
Not along ago a dermatologist told me that I had two different conditions and some products can aggravate the other one. I have rosacea (very mild) and seborrheic dermatitis. For what i understod its the same yeast that provoques this type of acne. Now that i see its the same yeast 🤔it’s confusing ..... (i have very dry skin and still have this problem of SD on my brows 😞) Thanks dr Dray for the educational info !!!! ☕️🌻

Hi, did you get them again?
i’m going through the same thing right now. i use head and shoulders shampoo in the AM & then use Lotrimin cream afterwards.
is it safe to use sunscreen on top of the Lotrimin cream?

Hi can you recommend some FA safe products you use
Thanks for your comment, it’s very precious ! I didn’t now folliculitis scout 😱
Nizoral worked like a charm for my fungal acne. I have only used it twice now and the bumps are 90% gone! I cannot believe I waited so long to finally treat them with this stuff! So happy and thankful for the recommendation!
Is yr fungal acne red? Mine is itchy but not red. Is it fungal?

I've been using Paula's choice salicylic acid exfoliant for regular acne since January and, amongst all the other changes, I've noticed I don't have fungal acne in my forehead anymore! Thank you for your videos, I've learnt so much from you ❤
Currently using this twice a week but my bumps have turned into breakouts, did this happen to you and should I continue ? I have read a purge is normal
Hi , it works on my forehead but not my cheeks. How do you treat your cheeks please? Thanks
How often do u use it ?
Dermadoctor makes a zinc pyrithione face wash I never hear anyone talk about. It is fragrance free.
Thank you for explaining that there is no such thing as fungal acne safe!
I’m so glad I decided to watch this. My husband has been on a low dose antibiotic for his rosacea. Now he has acne in his back. Thank you!!
So good to see some gentler options like the bar soap, and I had no idea salicylic acid could work for fungal acne!
I use Nizoral shampoo for my seborrheic dermatitis. It works great! A dermatologist told me I could use it on my face, and I do when I have breakouts. I use it around my nose, my chin, forehead, and around my ears where I get flare ups, which don't happen too often anymore.
How did wash your face with it? Also how many times a day and everyday ??
I personally think anyone suffering with this condition should give it a shot.
yeah sulfur is helpful
Sulfur ointment made me breakout really bad and itchy. Hives. Nizoral didn't help. What now?

Believe it or not but I can't get head and shoulders shampoo in my area. But I can buy Ketoconazole cream over the counter, I can't believe it. It's been 5 days and the left side of my forehead is smoothing for the first time! For anyone trying this, please wash your face afterwards because even though it is a cream, it made my forehead to have a little breakout. Thank you for sharing your insight dr dray! I truly appreciate it from the bottom of my heart :)

Could you do a video on redness on hands and the bottoms of feet, and how to get rid of it? As well as getting rid of corns? My feet need a glow-up 🦶

Is there any relation to hormones or birth control and fungal acne? Like higher or lower estrogen affecting fungal acne?
You're a God sent, Doctora
Would the spray you recommend for after workouts help prevent this issue?
Omg you've answered my prayers thank you. I think I'm suffering from this and I'm seeing a doctor on Saturday 😘❤️❤️❤️

Dr Dray has said there are no waterproof sunscreens. They are water resistant.
@@db-gb5xi sorry, that's what I meant but should it be running down my face like that?
If the “fungal” acne clears, should we still use all the products consistently after? Or go back to a simple routine after?
I aint no doctor but I heard somewhere to use it maximum 3 times a week to once a week, since fungal acne comes back if you stop using it.
you should use the treatment no longer than 4 weeks everyday or dependable on what you are using 3 times a week and after that continue to use it once a week only to prevent it from coming back

I disagree. I had a madecassoside fluid from Korea with no English on the label. It made the fungal acne worse. I looked it up on one of those sites you dislike and it helped. If you have ever had fungal acne then you know that it flares worse and can react poorly with your regular skin are products your skin normally loves.
You don’t know what happened nfredoent caused it. You can only assume unless you do a double blind study ya know
@@Btree33 No you are incorrect. Kindly reread my original post and try again.
Which cream was it?
It isn't necessary to always stick to FA safe products indefinitely once you are cleared.
would you recommend the cerave sa lotion for the face as a nighttime moisturizer?
Dr. Dray could you make a video on celiac disease and acne?
Not along ago a dermatologist told me that I had two different conditions and some products can aggravate the other one. I have rosacea (very mild) and seborrheic dermatitis. Decrease the use of Nizoral throughout the week. Once per week should be fine. Just make sure you use a moisturiser that does *not* contain fungal acne ingredients. The following moisturisers are good:
- Avene Tolerance Hydra10 Hydrating Fluid
- La Roche-Posay Toleriane Sensitive Fluide Moisturiser
- Curel Intensive Moisture Facial Cream
- e.l.f. SuperHydrate with Squalane.
