Today I learned that I don't have many whiteheads/blackheads at all, I have SEBACEOUS FILAMENTS. Small revolution in my thinking and approach. Thank you for the ongoing skincare education!
My dad had tons of sebaceous filaments and the oiliest of skin with no history of acne just tons of oil. And so do I. He passed away at 95 and didn’t look a day over 80. The oil kept him young. I am 40 and people tell me I look 30 at the most. I credit his genes, oily skin and Retin A! I will take sebaceous filaments over wrinkles and sagging any day!
My Grandmother a very wise and beautiful woman who had a big knowledge of natural cosmetic treatments used always to tell : wrinkles need oil and protection from the sun! ❤️ She died with 97 and looked like 60 without makeup after giving birth to 8 children and a super turbulent life!!! ❤️ At this point a big thanks to this wise beautyful girl 😉✌️ named Dr dray❣️
Moisture and oil are 2 different things. Skin needs moisture for smoothing , but overproducing oil doesn’t typically keep the skin looking any younger.
Well, could be just a coincidence, but I'm a male in my thirties with oily skin and no one believes me at first when I tell them my age. They think I'm 25 yo at max.
@@amygalvin1799 Dryness exacerbates tightness in skin, which leads to stretching and wrinkles over time - think of the tightness you might feel after using an overly stripping cleanser. That dryness and tightness in your skin means that every time you move your face it's pulling at your skin. Now think of the feeling of putting on lotion after this tight feeling - your skin is no longer being stretched every time you make an expression. Oilyness is not the same as hydration, you're right, but being oily is much better for wrinkle prevention than being dry.
@@amygalvin1799 I took part in a skincare trial a few years ago where I couldnt use moisteriser for a few weeks. My skin was tested under a machine once a week where hydration and oil levels were checked. I was told I had the highest levels out of the participants. And that my oil created a barrier which "sealed" in the hydration. I do have very few wrinkles. I'm 58 years old.
I have never been happier to see a video. I have been struggling with this for years and thought they were blackheads. I am having monthly facials now to help with this.
do the facials help? did they also minimize the look of the size of your pores? i'm thinking of investing in facials at a doc's office next yr (once my accutane treatment concludes)
Gotta love how careful and thoughtful you are when commenting on eating habits. It's so nice to see a responsible being making videos that - thank god! - are largely watched. Thank you, dr Dray!
I love that you referenced more budget-friendly options too, good to see that I don't have to spend 200 euros just to get a skincare routine. Thank you!
I know that you are a doctor but I have lived with oily skin and large pores for my entire life and there is one tip that I wish someone told me. You need to wash, exfoliate, and tone to get most foundations off. They are difficult to get off. Everyone told me to be gentle and not over wash ...well my acne got worse. when the Korean 10 step routine got popular it cleared my skin up. Today's makeup products are extremely difficult to fully get off so just be sure it's removed! great videos!
I have switched from silicone-based moisturizers, sunscreens, and makeup to products that are primarily oil- or wax- based, and my filaments are gone (or invisible at least). I do use AHA/BHAs and I think that helps, but I was using those before and it wasn't until I started avoiding silicones that my condition markedly improved. (I use Josie Maran's sunscreen SPF 47 if anyone is wondering. It might have a small amount of silicone (?) but it's more of an oily lotion. I use powder foundation.)
I have found that using a rice powder based loose powder such as T. LeClerc instead of foundation has been great for my skin. Mineral based powder sunscreen is also great.
I recently realized I was eating foods with little to no fiber and it was effecting my gut health, I now try and eat a good amount of fiber and I feel so much better!! this vid was so helpful
I've had white sebaceous filaments for years. All you need to do is put some tea tree oil on a Q tip, apply it on them, wipe off with a damp cotton round, and they disappear.
Thank you for this video! I have found the 2% BHA and 0.1% Adapalene work well together with my skin to minimize the appearance of sebaceous filaments.
I love the explanation of why salicylic acid works well to treat sebaceous filaments. As a geologist, I want to know why something works, not just the name of a product that works.
I just watched your older video about this! And just purchased the Paulas Choice bha and I get back on TH-cam and see you posted this 1 minute ago! So crazy 😳
Your videos are great! I love how organized it is too! Getting info from an actual doctor makes purchasing certain products feel well-worth their prices!
people often don't like to admit it because it's the hardest things to change, but diet is key and the most critical. Thank you Dr. Dray, for explaining so thoroughly and clearly; listing recommendations; and providing variety in these. I am especially grateful that you recommend more than just retinol and BHAs: those of us going through fertility treatments and pregnancy/breastfeeding cannot safely use those products. While the reat of my face benefits from oatmeal, and other gentle ingredients, I still get the sebaceous filaments and they drive me mad. Thanks for some alternatives to try.
Don't squeeze these! I bought a 15x mirror and was horrified and started squeezing these, and now I have those little broken capillaries that don't go away but the filaments come right back.
Can you please recommend a skincare routine for someone with sebaceous filaments, oily skin, large pores and aging? I’m really struggling to figure out a routine
Have you tried a retinoid? I've had some real results with over the counter. It's helped the sf around my nose and also fine lines and smoothing of the skin.
Would you please talk about isotretinoin pills for treating acne? Is that a safe way regarding the side effects of the pill, to treat acne? And what should we worry about while taling this pill?
@Darian I use it every night before bed and wash with Cerave Hydrating cleanser in the morning. The SA wash and lotion is very gentle and I have had no problems using it daily.
Eggs white and half a lemon juice, smear on face and Dry for 20 minutes, then wash off with cold water, 3 times for week at night, very important due lemon, next day in the morning sunscreen face (for oily skin), results in the first week
I’ve been using Paula’s choice 2% BHA and I’ve noticed so many improvements in my skin! I only use it once a week because I noticed that using it more frequently than that dehydrates my skin, and my pores are actually more noticeable. I’ve also bought ZapZit based on your recommendation and I really like it so far! It’s not irritating at all-I use it only on my t-zone though. My daily cleanser is La Roche Posay Toleriane gentle cleaner and that works really well for my combo skin. I have also been applying the Aveeno oat gel moisturizer to my wet face after the shower and it’s amazing! My face is so much more hydrated with this technique
J in the morning I only use CeraVe am moisturizer with SPF. I typically use Paula’s BHA at night after Ive washed my face. The only actives I’m currently using are BHA and niacinamide. I haven’t been using BHA that long, so I’ve been trying to space out the introduction of other actives for the time being-to avoid stressing my skin.
