    To everyone mentioning that some of the ingredients in these products aren’t good for fungal acne, I discussed this with Dr. Desai and she said it’s not about one specific ingredient. Nash _ it depends on the person. Many see great results with Nizoral but some don’t. Nizoral is very drying and when your skin is dry, it means your moisture barrier isn’t doing so great which will cause acne or even more fungal acne. If Nizoral dries out your face and using moisturizer doesn’t help with the dryness, then stop using it.

    • @hallyuniverse
      @hallyuniverse 4 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      The Versed Retinol is terrible for malassezia overgrowth so I have no idea how Dr. Desai recommended that. It has so many different oils and fatty acids in it. The toner and gel cleanser also contain triggers. Expected the video to be more researched when you're trying to recommend products to treat an actual skin condition that's usually assessed by dermatologists. ESPECIALLY if Dr. Nina Desai is putting her stamp of approval on it, seems like she didn't read the ingredients of half the products before saying they were safe.

    • @JD_LA_YT
      @JD_LA_YT 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Well on the flip side oils that have an Oleic dominant fatty acid profile can proliferate P Acnes (which makes acne worse) however oily with a Linoleic Dominant profile (sunflower, safflower, grapeseed) tend to help lessen acne.
      Your point is valid with regards to Fungal Acne specifically. I heard that certain oils like squalane oil, MCT Oil, & Mineral Oil (which I have a hard time getting behind) are fungal acne safe.

      @karinajessicabarotil9131 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I’ve observed that polysorbates are the worst triggers for my fungal acne. Its so sad how difficult it is to find FA-safe products with retinol and azaleic acid that don’t have polysorbates in them. I hope brands step up to this rising demand soon.

    • @hallyuniverse
      @hallyuniverse 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@alezandradavila2581 Fungal acne is not a bacteria, so something being antibacterial does nothing to it. That's why regular acne treatments do not work on it. Mandelic acid is a great AHA for exfoliation, but it's not going to cure fungal acne.

  • @hallyuniverse
    @hallyuniverse 4 ปีที่แล้ว +110

    Susan as much as I appreciate your videos and recommendations, and love the fact that you're going out of your way to create routines for people who don't have your skin type, a lot of these products are actually not suitable for malassezia. It doesn't necessarily mean you can't use them if you have fungal "acne" (malassezia folliculitis), but several of them do contain ingredients that can exacerbate it and viewers should be cautioned about that fact. Specifically the Versed retinol contains sunflower seed oil, shea butter, sea buckthorn oil, rosehip oil, polysorbate 80,
    and hydrogenated vegetable oil which are all lipids that can exacerbate the growth of yeast on the skin. I'm actually shocked that Dr. Desai would skip over a serum with this many fatty acids and call it fungal "acne" safe. Also the Glow Recipe toner contains a ton of amino acids which can potentially accelerate the growth of the malassezia yeast when it's exposed to lipids, and this toner also happens to contain sunflower seed oil which directly feeds fungal "acne." The Summer Fridays cleanser also contains amino acids and the same sunflower seed oil.That micellar water does contain a few fungal acne triggers, such as the shiitake mushroom extract (which is a polysaccharide that can feed malassezia) but overall would recommend using a micellar water over a pure oil/balm for fungal acne. Of the products mentioned in the video I 100% recommend the Nizoral, Vichy Mineral 89, and Krave Water Cream if you have problems with malassezia overgrowth. Personal recommendations to replace the micellar water, gel cleanser, toner, and retinol would be the Bioderma micellar water, Vanicream cleanser, the Cosrx AHA/BHA toner, and Differin adapalene 0.1% (if you're not able to get Differin OTC/live outside of the US the Dr. Dennis Gross retinol is relatively fungal safe.)

      hallyuniverse what about The Ordinary, specifically Natural Moisturizing Factors and Buffet.

    • @hallyuniverse
      @hallyuniverse 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@ericmartin9569 Neither are recommended. The Ordinary's Natural Moisturizing Factors has a lot of fatty acids (which naturally occur on the skin, but are what the malassezia yeast feed on.) And peptides are not fungal acne safe, aside from that The Buffet also contains emulsifiers like polysorbate 20
      and PEG-40 that can trigger fungal outbreaks. This doesn't necessarily mean using these products will trigger a malassezia outbreak (especially if you're regularly treating it with something like ketoconazole 1% or 2%), but it has the chance to exacerbate it if that's something you're prone to. It's an at your own risk and discretion type of thing with malassezia, many things can make it worse or cause a flare up.

      Zinc pyrithione does help, but argan oil feeds the fungus! And zinc pyrithione is fungostatic, not fungicidal, so it doesn't kill the fungus, and is better for maintenance. A lot of dandruff treatment and fungal treatment still have ingredients that will feed the fungus... not the greatest formulations, and I found that out the hard way, with a shampoo that had an ester in and that made me flare up instead of helping!

    I suspected I had fungal acne for the longest time, have never been to a dermatologist, but I adopted a fungal acne safe routine in recent months and my skin has been in the best condition it's ever been. Another good website is Folliculutis Scout for finding fungal safe products because it breaks down the products by their ingredients and rates how safe it is for fungal acne!

Not much though. Hopefully better results come by each week!!! *Week 2:* I think it’s helping my forehead a lot, but not as much my chin or jaw. It’s making the bottom part of my face pretty dry. I think it’s the Nizoral shampoo so be sure to buy a moisturizer! *Week 3:* I had stopped using it because my skin started getting really dry and it just made me break out more lol that was a waste of money 👍🏼

Or should i buy just not all of them ? And how long do you actually need to do the routine because if you stop it can come back right? Or not ? Melisa Can for me, I got all the products besides the retinol serum and oat cream. So I’m not using all the products she’s using, but I do think the Nizoral shampoo is helping some so I suggest using it and if you get a moisturizer then you can keep your skin from getting too dry. My skin isn’t dry though and I’ve been doing this routine for about 5 days. My skin is sensitive as well. It usually takes a least a couple of weeks of consistent/ daily use for you to see a difference. I will keep updates on this comment after very week of daily using these products so stay tuned lol

    ‼️‼️Maybe it would be more advisable to start with an antifungal cream. Nizoral has SLS, and I’m not like anti-SLS, I used Cetaphil, but I think leaving it on the skin for 5 minutes would compromise your skin barrier so much that it would be better to start with an OTC antifungal cream like clotrimazole or miconazole (-azole basically means antifungal). It would probably better to use a light amount of cream before resorting to soaking your face for an extended period of time in a cleansing agent, especially if you have sensitive skin.

My 5 year old had some intense cradle cap and it cleared it up in a week and it’s never returned. I think nizoral works great as a “spot treatment” rather than washing an entire area that may not need to be treated. Also, I’ve found for my sons entire head, all he needs is a pea sized amount on the fingertip. Hope this may help those who want to try it. It really will sting your eyes! I hope it works for others as well as it’s worked for my husband and my kids!

    My experience with fungal acne:
    When I was in college, I was able to see a doctor for my acne, she prescribed me benzoyl peroxide and a topical antibiotic. It did nothing to help my acne :( I tried lots of different things.
    I was getting acne bumps, but also had really bad skin texture on my forehead, sides of face, chin, actually everywhere lol. The texture was actually tiny flesh colored bumps and NOTHING was smoothing them out (salicylic acid, differin, you name them all). They were very noticeable and my skin was horrid. The PIH was terrible.
    After college, my healthcare plan changed and it was terrible. I could no longer afford to see a derm (I actually did go, but he was terrible and spent only 30 seconds with me and prescribed me $900 worth of treatments (about 5 different products/prescriptions) all at the same time (he apparently gives this treatment for all patients with acne, and only personalizes it after patients have undergone his ridiculous treatment plan for some time).
    I didn't know what to do. I couldn't afford the treatments. I did a bunch of research and started washing my face with head and shoulders shampoo (I also have dandruff, and the bottle was in my shower, so I thought why not). I did it everyday for nearly a month, then did it about once or twice a week thereafter. It took several months, but my acne completely cleared. I only get one breakout a month when my period comes around. I continued with the head and shoulders once a week for about a year. I'm noticing that I'm getting more pimples, but they are more hormonal in pattern than fungal (around my jaw).
    A year or two ago, information on fungal acne was lacking, so I'm glad these videos are coming out.
    I'm thinking about switching to nizoral and seeing how that goes! My dandruff is coming back (on my head) and its not going away as fast as I would like, so I'm thinking to switch.

Head and Shoulders has a lot of fragrance and strong soap chemicals in it, so if you have sensitive skin, it may feel irritating and it can make your face feel dry. • @cassandraboarman6677
      @cassandraboarman6677 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A search site I used where you put the ingredients in to see if your product is safe or not, said glycerin is fine as long as you're not mixing fatty lipids etc with it. So if glycerin is the only product it's safe unless you're just especially sensitive to glycerin.

I watch a million videos, learning more and more about my acne, and I finally came across Nizoral Dandruff Shampoo! This stuff is a life saver. It’s been two days using it, and my bumps have decreased SOOOO MUCH!This product is a little more on the pricy side ($25), but it’s so worth it! Go to target and get yourself some of this Shampoo!

Now, you posted this video. 0.0 like wtf is happening....(Ya'll should try fresh aloe vera and rub it on infected areas and leave it on your face for the whole night/day. Oh, Susan. The skincare TH-camr we all need 😀 I'm touched by your actual use of a routine that isn't even an issue you have! And, as a sufferer (oh, how we sufferrrr 😂) of fungal "acne", I feel very seen and heard, so thank you!
    A few points: that retinol is not FA safe. Any natural oil are feeding the yeast. Polysorbates ditto. The fungus, it makes you gotta be creative! Urea, squalane, lactic acid, glycerin but only if your skin doesn't flare up with glycerin. Also, ceramides feed the fungus 😑 That Oat So Simple, that's Liah Yoo's gift to people with FA ❤

      Amrita Ramesh Thanks for sharing! I got a lot of conflicting information when I was researching. Derms all said there weren’t specific ingredients to avoid besides anything too occlusive. Some websites said squalane was fine, others said it feeds fungal acne. It’s crazy how much is so unknown!

    • @EH012
      @EH012 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@deadlifts_steaks. Ah, yeah. Formulations with ceramides inevitably have some kind if oil or fatty esters... I'll tell you this, though. Get some squalane oil. I think the Ordinary has one. Mind you, a very small percentage of people have fungal acne react to that as well, although it's usually safe. Still, squalane is even BETTER than ceramides for barrier repair and is also "skin-identical". Try it out, a few drops as your last step, keep a close eye out for any possible reactions. I know my skin loves it! When a door closes, a window opens? 😂❤

I can already see a huge difference but I don't want my skin to get used to this product either. Try that, if it starts burning, wash it off and reduce it to every other day and apply aloe vera if possible help soothe the redness and irritation. Good luck!
