It sounds like Ford's equivalent to the Slant Six for reliability, torque and economy.
Was it a bigger version of the 250 we got Down Under in the '60's and '70's?
If so, I'd have to wonder if the 250's crossflow head and EFI would bolt on?

PiDsMedia : Nope The United States E van and F series Truck and sometime passanger car Big Six 240 (3.9) and 300 (4.9) was a big 4.47 inch bore spacing engine...the Australian 144/170/188 (3.1)/200(3.3)/221(3.6)/250(4.1) and related 3.2/3.9/4.0 SOHCs and Barras were all short deck, narrow 4.08 inch bore spacing engines from the 1960 Falcon program. After 1976, all that smaller jazz got X flo heads and nothing interchanges with the Big Six at all. The United States4.9 EFi Big Six looks like the Aussie 1983 to 1987 4.1 EFi, but the US engine is non cross flow and totally different. The Big Six was born in 1965 as a 240 or 300 cubic inch replacement for the 262 i6...and the 4.9 is still made as an industriak engine.Last truck application was 1997.

My dad was up in the woods upstate when the 300 I6 in his 92 F150 spun a bearing and lost oil pressure. He let it sit for the day and fired it up the next day. Had oil pressure and he drove it the 4 hours home. Ran fine. He drove that truck anther 2 years before it spun a bearing again and wouldn’t keep oil pressure. But it still ran well enough to drive to the junkyard under its own power. It had 325,000 miles on it. Not bad for a few and far maintained engine. He bought it when it was only a few years old with 30,000 miles on it. It was his work truck. I only remember it breaking down once and needing a tow (fuel pump).
The best I got was my old 86 F250 351 auto 4x4. Sold it with 285,000 on it. Engine was never opened up. Just regular maintenance. Miss that truck...

Being a commercial equipment application, I bet that 300 was balanced to keep vibrations to a minimum. The cylinder bores were also probably done to a higher standard (blue printed?). I loved my 88 F150 with the 300 6 and 5 speed manual (regular cab, 2wd, long bed). Such a great drivetrain combo. I got 18 mpg on longer trips. And that for an 80s fullsize truck with enough power to get work done was almost unbelievable (for comparison, my 73 F100 regular cab 2wd long bed manual everything rebuilt 360 straight duals 3 on the tree got 10 mpg always). Always wanted say a 64 Galaxie with a good 300 and 5 speed (or even 3 on the tree as they are easy to drive) plus a very tall rear end to take advantage of that torque. Would be a great highway cruiser and decent mpg. Call it the Slowville Lugger (yeah, I've thought about this quite a lot in the past. lol). Lugging most engines is bad because low oil pressure for forces, so that would need to be addressed.

I did build one, not extreme, just deck the head, 4 barrel intake and carb, and a better cam. I was able to keep up with a stout but stock 350 in the 1/4. I was fixing my dad's 300 so I lent him my built one...he said "that thing's got way more power!" I said that I knew that. The biggest difference I noticed was it had way more top end power, the down low was relatively unaffected.

Alright, finally the Ford 300 Big six is gonna get some Power Nation love! Please, Please include a Turbo in this build, & also consider the turbo with LPG (yes, HD-5 propane motor fuel) which has 105 octane! The guru's of that combo are at Ak Miller's Garage in Pico Rivera, Ca. Ak Miller (RIP) invented advanced LPG carburetors & perfected the Turbo/propane combo w/amazing low emissions. A 4bbl or twin 2 bbl LPG carbs on appropriate Clifford or Offenhauser hipo manifolds & boost will amaze us all. GotPropane.com may be helpful too. They specialize in 4WD off-road LPG/Turbo combos. Remember with LPG, richer is hotter, leaner is cooler with gaseous fuels, just opposite of gasoline. I can hardly wait!

I install these motors (Ford 300s) into my equipment all the time. Still used heavily in the airline ground support equipment (GSE) arena. Super easy to work on. Damn near abuse-proof. Can run as low as 6psi oil pressure and work without failure (not recommended!) . Married to a C6 with an 14:1 to 18:1 rear end (yes that right), a MA50-1 can pull a house or five down. That drivetrain combo can even be found in the larger pushback tractors. Tractors that are pushing around 150,000lbs loaded aircraft, and doing it with ease.

Man that hellephant is sick. 847 whp when you're running a big rear end, a 3.0L supercharger, and a regular geared automatic transmission you're losing at least 21 percent from the crank to the wheels maybe more. Some of the older modern transmissions from the Daimler Chrysler era were known to cause very high parasitic losses. Mid 25 percentiles were seen from the crank to the wheel. This setup with the magnaflow puts down 1024 hp and 1050 ft lbs at least. Thats insane.

Rebuilt the 300 in my 1984 F150. Other than a 0.030 bore job (broken rings and scored bores) and "premium" rings, kept it a stock build to include the reuse of the old EECIV feedback carb setup (I did retrofit a heated O2 sensor). Not much HP, but good torque and runs great. Doesn't get the fuel economy that others report though... still, she's a keeper. Heck, with the broken rings and terrible compression, I was able to drive it from southern Indiana to Kansas (via a side trip to MO) and back... struggled, but she made it. Can't kill them.

The builder cut a chamber off of two Cleveland heads, mended them together and bolted it to the 6 as the bore spacing and head bolt holes were the same. This cat was running 9s in an altered. I challenge y'all to do this! At least you'll get the manifolds on opposite sides.

The cargo tugs at the airport are almost all powered by ford 300s.
We had one come in the shop for preventive maintenance and it has a metallic noise coming from the engine and ran rough, but we were swamped with work and it wasn't running so bad to justify taking it off the line.
2 weeks later we brought it back in and the noise had lessened, I decided to pull the head after a compression test came back with zero compression on #1.
I found the exhaust valve drop and stuffed through the piston stem first and properly peened into the piston. I found a piston in the scrap pile, ground all the damaged out of the cylinder head. No damage to the cylinder walls. I used a random exhaust valve I found, it was to large so it got bench ground to fit.
All and all it took half a shift to get it running again, and if I wasn't so slow that day there would of been zero hesitation in leaving it on the line.
