Here in Spain theatres are actually open so this year my list of favorites is full of Spanish features. But there's one that I highly encourage you to see. It's called Akelarre and it's quite similar to The Witch by Robert Eggers. Put it on your radar.
For some reason every time I start one of your videos I have a split second of thinking you dyed your hair pink before realizing it’s just cool lighting lol
Marianna you had me at The Vast of Night, which slipped by me. And Corpus Christi looks pretty stunning. Devs, indeed. If you do anymore series bests then I'm sure Dark is going to rank high for you. Well here's to 2021 and some serious surprises. Wait!!! No Wonder Woman 1984! And I think this is the longest I've ever seen your hair. Not that I'm complaining.
I'm Thinking of Ending Things was a film that perfectly lined up with everything that I want in a movie and didn't know it yet. And yes Jesse Buckley is a phenomenal talent. I loved her in this as well as 'Beast' and 'The Lost Daughter '
1. First Cow 2. I'm Thinking of Ending Things 3. Bacurau 4. Mangrove (vastly superior to Chicago 7) 5. The Nest 6. David Byrne's American Utopia 7. Vitalina Varela 8. Lovers Rock 9. Nomadland 10. Possessor
Marianna, you are so dependable when it comes to recommending films and books that are good and in my own taste. You are so on point as well: since day one your aesthetics are mezmorizing. And the way you speak and write is so engaging and clever. Thank you for creating such incredible content that is so well thought out. I have been out of the loop for so long, and I miss you and I miss watching great movies/books. You've never let me down. After Dostoevski, Tarkovsky, Tolstoy, Solzhenitsyn, Maya Plisetskaya, Nabokov, and vodka, you are in that line of why I possess such a Russian sentiment. I'm serious I am i love with your work and I think your amazing. Cheers.
Vast of night was a surprise huh? On paper it’s just 2 characters talking for 90 min and nothing happens… but the film making techniques elevate the material so much that it becomes enthralling.
I think 'The invisible man' was a very effective thriller, maybe is not a relevant movie in terms of deep themes but it has great entertainment value. I make a honorable mention here haha. Great list btw... looking forward to see more.
Sound of Metal is the BEST! Thank you for reminding me to watch Small Axe, DEVS, and The Vast of Night, and I'll look into Corpus Christi and Nomadland too.
Awesome Top 10 list, I'm waiting until I've seen Wonder Woman 1984 and Tenet before I decide to make my list. Unpopular opinion Birds of Prey is my favourite movie of 2020!
1- I'm thinking of ending things 2- Corpus Christi 3- The Sound of Metal 4- The Assistant 5- Another Round 6- Nomadland 7- Martin Eden 8- Soul 9- Wolfwalker 10- Babyteeth
My favourites were (in no order) : Wolfwalkers, Nomadland, The Vast Of Night, Promising Young Woman, She Dies Tomorrow, His House, I'm Thinking Of Ending Things, Sound Of Metal, Saint Frances, Babyteeth, Bacurau, Palm Springs, The Assistant
Awesome list, as always! :D And we are definitely adding ‘Corpus Christi’ to our watchlist along with many others 😊 Personal favorites are ‘Soul’, ‘Sound of Metal’ and ‘The Haunting of Bly Manor’, and we wish ‘You Cannot Kill David Arquette’ had gotten a bit more attention from people. As for 2020 releases we still need to see, they are: Another Round I Care a Lot. Wolfwalkers Nomadland The Father Nine Days Palm Springs Promising Young Woman His House The Vast of Night Thanks as always, Marianna! Have a great week! )))
Literally paused the video to go watch The Vast of Night, and wow what a beautiful story! and that score! damn (kinda reminded me of Sputnik for some reason)
Nomadland I feel really blurs the line between good drama and a "do whatever and we'll film it" production. I found it hard to become emotionally invested. I kept having visions of Chloe telling Frances "Wait!!! You have to poop? Do it on the side of the road and we'll use it in the movie!!!!"
Btw shout out to the longer hair! my list is: 10. Pieces Of a Woman 9. Wolfwalker 8. Minari 7. Sound Of Metal 6. Nomadland 5. Da 5 Bloods 4. Trial Of Chicago 7 3. Mank 2. I'm Thingking Of Ending Things 1. The Fathers
2020 was an okay movie considering movies basically stopped after March lol. 1. Invisible man 2. Yellow rose 3. Words on bathroom walls 4. The kid detective 5. Kajillionare 6. Extraction 7. Soul 8. Tenet 9. One night in miami 10. Borat 2
At least 3 films on your list; can't wait to see them myself. Druk `Another Round` is also the best film I've seen so far of 2020. Thomas Vinterberg's debut feature film 'The Celebration' is also fantastic, but it goes very dark in its subject matter.
I'm not surprise that you had Promising Young Woman and Sound of Metal on your list Mariana. I love both movie, especially Sound of Metal because of the premise of the movie and performance of Riz Ahmed. I know he better get an Oscar nod. Some of my favorite movies from last year was Relic, The Rental and The Invisible Man.
🌼 Can’t wait to watch Minari, Another Round, Nomadland, The Father, Devs, Promising Young Woman & I’m Thinking of Ending Things, and your video got me interested in Palm Springs and The Trial of the Chicago 7! 🤟🏼 Other films I’m yet to see include the Small Axe films, Kajillionaire, Never Rarely Sometimes Always, Wolfwalkers, A Girl Missing, Waves, and Driveways. 😲 Not good at ranking or choosing a fixed number of favorites, because I feel my list would change every day, so here are the films I loved in 2020, released in 🇳🇱: 🌻 *Nasir* (Arun Karthick) 🌻 *Noura’s Dream* (Hinde Boujemaa) 🌻 *Bulbul Can Sing* (Rima Das) 🌻 *Un Fils* (Mehdi Barsaoui) 🌻 *Farewell Amor* (Ekwa Msangi) 🌻 *Adam* (Maryam Touzani) 🌻 *House of Hummingbird* (Bora Kim) 🌻 *Rocks* (Sarah Gavron) 🌻 *Matthias et Maxime* (Xavier Dolan) 🌻 *Beanpole* (Kantemir Balagov) 🌻 *System Crasher* (Nora Fingscheidt) 🌻 *La Belle Époque* (Nicolas Bedos) 🌻 *Gulabo Sitabo* (Shoojit Sircar) 🌻 *The Last Black Man in San Francisco* (Joe Talbot) 🌻 *A Hidden Life* (Terrence Malick) 🌻 *Queen & Slim* (Melina Matsoukas) 🌻 *Sound of Metal* (Darius Marder) 🌻 *The Vast of Night* (Andrew Patterson) 🌻 *Just Mercy* (Destin Daniel Cretton) 🌻 *Dark Waters* (Todd Haynes) 🌻 *Soul* (Pete Doctor & Kemp Powers) 🌻 *Jojo Rabbit* (Taika Waititi)
Another Round is a disappointing movie. It has interesting concept. But somehow its never really gets into the theme as deeply as it should. Also the screenplay is disjointing and the movie does not form a clear narrative. Yes the movie has some charm but its not the top movie of 2020. Its just not dramatic or emphatic enough.
Hi Mariana! Glad to see “Corpus Christi” as your top 10 movies of 2020. I just loved this movie when I saw it back in 2019 here in Portugal. Loved your list although many of then I didn’t had the chance to see yet. Take care.
Corpus Christi is excellent and you're right, most people have to see it and recommend it. And I saw Another Round a couple of days ago and I loved it. It's also one of my favorites of the year without a doubt. Mads Mikkelsen is just amazing!
Great top 10! My top 10: 10. #Alive 9. Run 8. Superman: Red Son 7. Birds of Prey 6. Love and Monsters 5. I'm Thinking of Ending Things 4. Da 5 Bloods 3. Palm Springs 2. The Trial of the Chicago of the 7 1. Soul
Wow! I was really expecting Pieces of a Woman to be your #1 and was surprised to see it's not on here! Maybe I'm just misremembering your review of it, but it's always fun when end of the year lists are unpredictable. I still have SOOOOO MANY movies from this year to catch up on, but here is my current Top 10; 1. Never Rarely Sometimes Always 2. Uncle Frank 3. Swallow 4. The Invisible Man 5. Sound of Metal 6. Relic 7. She Dies Tomorrow 8. His House 9. i'm thinking of ending things 10. Palm Springs
I mean, I think it's an amazing film, but I have no desire to ever watch it again, so that's why I didn't feel like it was fair to put "Pieces of a Woman" on my list above anything I actually DO want to rewatch (or have rewatched already). Love your list, by the way!
Awesome list Marianna! 👏🏼 There’s so many 2020 films I’ve yet to see (especially difficult when things get released so much later here in Australia 😝 - for example, ‘The Rental’ only *just* became available here but I know it’s been out for about 6 months haha). There’s a couple on your list that I’ve put on my watch list. Especially excited for The Sound of Metal and Corpus Christi. Also, I LOVED Promising Young Woman. Checked it out twice in the theatres, it’s just so great (and that ending!). Thanks for sharing your list. Great video, as usual! 🖤
Thank you so much! Let me know what you think, if you check out any of the ones on my list that you haven't seen. And YES, "Promising Young Woman" was so interesting, really wish I would have seen it in theatres.
One night I couldn't sleep at all, so I thought I would watch the beginning of Sound of Metal and turn it off at some point when I got tired. I finished the film at 4 am and can't stop thinking about it.
"Sound of metal" with brilliant Riz Ahmed "Another round" "Unorthodox" (mini-series), and "I know this much is true" (a superb performance by Mark Ruffalo)
Have you seen House of Hummingbird? That was my top film of 2020. It's an amazing Korean film and a directorial debut that would make Bong Joon Ho proud! Great list btw, I also had Another Round, Promising Young Woman and Sound of Metal in mine!
Another Round is my favourite film of the year too. But I want to watch about five more movies before I decide on a top 10 or even top five, because I have only seen about 40 2020 releases so far, and a lot of them are on pretty equal footing for me.
Mariana : please get down to watching the Small Axe films . If you’re okay with including Devs here : I’m 100% sure films from Steve McQueen in the Small Axe would’ve made your list
Corpus Christi is based on a true story! Kill It and Leave This Town - it took 14 years to make that movie :) Eastern - it is from 2019 but such an underrated movie...
Great list, now I have more movies to add to my watchlist. For me the biggest surprise this year was Pieces of a Woman, it just blew me away. Here is my Top 10 of this year: Pieces of a Woman I'm Thinking of Ending Things Never Rarely Sometimes Always Shithouse Black Bear Sputnik Gretel & Hansel (even tho it had a bad reception by most people) 12 Hour Shift Relic Possessor I always go by the year Letterboxd categorizes the movie, because here in Austria movies sometimes take 1-2 years to get a wide release and it would be to complicated to categorize them this way.
Great video & list! I still have to watch Nomadland, Vast of Night and Sound of Metal but you just made me excited about Corpus Christi, which I wasn't necessarily going to watch in the first place. Speaking of 1st place, we share that one in common! 1. Another Round (immediately knew it was my number one after that finale!) 2. I'm thinking of ending things (Tried to make some friends watch it with me again. They fell asleep in that first 20min scene ^^) 3. Mank 4. Sputnik (which I totally only saw because you reviewed it on this channel. I would never have even heard of it if it wasn't for you. So thank you for that!) 5. Tigertail (reminded me of that "Parents" episode from Master of None S01EO2) 6. Weathering With You ( from Makoto Shinkai, the guy who did "Your Name", which Letterboxd tells me you haven't seen yet either!) 7. The Invisible Man (Never thought this movie would have made my list when I first heard of it ^^) 8. Tenet (Very dry, but crunchy ^^) 9. His House (told you about already) 10. Time to Hunt (A much better movie than I was expecting when I heard it was a Korean Heist movie, highly recommanded) Promising Young Woman just fell short of my top 10, landing at number 11. And lower down my list I also have Palm Springs and The Trial of the Chicago 7. One other movie I would recommend to you Marianna, since you like time loops as much as I do, is "Koko-di Koko-da"! Looking forward to your upcoming videos!
Been looking forward to this! You have inspired me to rent “Another Round.” I haven’t seen as many films this year as I’d like to (Have yet to see Nomadland, Minari, The Father, Promising Young Woman), but the best film I saw would have to be “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” I loved that it was (mostly) all one location, Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman were incredible, and it felt like the most successfully executed picture I saw.
Good list, a lot of those would make my best of. It must be generational, but I had a hard time not being offended with the inclusion of TV in the list;-). I'm probably almost twice your age, but gave up on TV in the early '90s. Some of the ones that would make my list that you didn't mention would be The Nest (Carrie Coon deserved an acting nomination!), Swallow, 1st Cow, The Climb & Vivarium. The top of my list would be A White, White Day.
1. Emma. 2. Minari 3. Pieces of a Woman 4. Promising Young Woman 5. i'm thinking of ending things 6. Another Round 7. The Father 8. On the Rocks 9. Gretel & Hansel 10. Violet Evergarden: The Movie
That's why I said, I prioritize films I want to watch again for "favorites" lists. As much as I loved "Pieced of a Woman", I can't see myself ever rewatching it - so much of it is very tough to watch.
Great video once again and thank you for the recommendations. With that said I love and hate your reviews/recommendations list. Love the movie recommendations, hate adding them to my watch list and seeing how large the list is becoming. On a serious note, I always enjoy every film you recommend so I can’t thank you enough!
Thank you so much! And trust me, I know all about really long watchlists - mine is on Letterboxd, and I'm pretty sure it's going to hit 1k soon. Yikes!
Kinda late but here is my top 10 movies of 2020: 10. Superman: Red Son 9. Hamilton 8. The One and Only Ivan 7. The Call of the Wild 6. Wonder Woman: 1984 5. Color Out Of Space 4. Lupin The 3rd: The First 3. Love And Monsters 2. Weathering With You 1. My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising

Movies I'm hoping to see at the cinema if they actually open them, in Buenos Aires they're still closed: The French Dispatch, No time to die, Death on The Nile & Tenet (which I saw online but I'd to see it on big screen 🙏
Have you seen The Killing of Two Lovers? I am curious if you liked it. It gave me almost that lingering angst you can have after waking up from weird dreams.
I love your reviews, but I don't know what TIF is nor do I know what VOD is? I'm guessing one if is a film festival and the other a video streaming service for newer movies. Please advise. I love your recommendations and reviews.
you are very close :) TIFF = Toronto International Film Festival. VOD = Video on Demand (basically it means that all major vendors like iTunes, GooglePlay, AmazonPriveVideo etc give you the ability to rent and/or buy the movie)

Amazing list Marianna! You always find the hidden gems to share with us.
Why not including Tenet?!
I love that you put DEVS on your list. Such a good series.
♥ Thank you for recommending Palm Springs! It was exactly what I needed. ♥
I think 'The invisible man' was a very effective thriller, maybe is not a relevant movie in terms of deep themes but it has great entertainment value. I make a honorable mention here haha.

I now realize I haven't even watch a 2020 movie 😨 thanks for the list!

7. She Dies Tomorrow
8. His House
9. i'm thinking of ending things
10. Palm Springs
I mean, I think it's an amazing film, but I have no desire to ever watch it again, so that's why I didn't feel like it was fair to put "Pieces of a Woman" on my list above anything I actually DO want to rewatch (or have rewatched already). Love your list, by the way!
Great list i was just planning to see Another Round this week excited to see it now
Have fun!
such a great list! Trial of the Chicago 7 is probably my favorite from last year. i also loved Emma.
Thank you! "Emma" definitely grew on me in the second half A LOT, plus it looks absolutely gorgeous!
Yeaaa it does that to you)) Glad you enjoyed the movie!
"Sound of metal" with brilliant Riz Ahmed
"Another round"
"Unorthodox" (mini-series), and
"I know this much is true" (a superb performance by Mark Ruffalo)
Have you seen House of Hummingbird? That was my top film of 2020. It's an amazing Korean film and a directorial debut that would make Bong Joon Ho proud! Great list btw, I also had Another Round, Promising Young Woman and Sound of Metal in mine!
Another Round is my favourite film of the year too. But I want to watch about five more movies before I decide on a top 10 or even top five, because I have only seen about 40 2020 releases so far, and a lot of them are on pretty equal footing for me.
Wow, thank you for the great gems you helped me to find. already love your recommendations, thank you
Girl your squad just LOVES you! We are - THE IMPRESSIONABLES
Also your hair looks cute at this length congrats
Aww "The Impressionables" - LOVE that :D
Thank you for recommending Corpus Christi, I absolutely loved it.
Mariana : please get down to watching the Small Axe films . If you’re okay with including Devs here : I’m 100% sure films from Steve McQueen in the Small Axe would’ve made your list
god i LOVED Palm Springs! I feel like it doesnt get enough credit because it looks like just another rom com.
Right? I feel like people dismiss it too easily, it's so good
thank you for putting the title's all over the video it made a quick watch 😀completed entire video in 1 min
Corpus Christi is based on a true story! Kill It and Leave This Town - it took 14 years to make that movie :) Eastern - it is from 2019 but such an underrated movie...
Thanks for telling me before about Corpus Christi, it was just awesome
So glad you loved it! Need more people to watch it ))
Corpus Christi!! Yes! Excellent, such an impactful film. Bielenia is a revelation.
Great list, now I have more movies to add to my watchlist.
For me the biggest surprise this year was Pieces of a Woman, it just blew me away.
Here is my Top 10 of this year:
Pieces of a Woman
I'm Thinking of Ending Things
Never Rarely Sometimes Always
Shithouse
Black Bear
Sputnik
Gretel & Hansel (even tho it had a bad reception by most people)
12 Hour Shift
Relic
Possessor
I always go by the year Letterboxd categorizes the movie, because here in Austria movies sometimes take 1-2 years to get a wide release and it would be to complicated to categorize them this way.
Great video & list!
I still have to watch Nomadland, Vast of Night and Sound of Metal but you just made me excited about Corpus Christi, which I wasn't necessarily going to watch in the first place.
Speaking of 1st place, we share that one in common!
1. Another Round (immediately knew it was my number one after that finale!)
2. I'm thinking of ending things (Tried to make some friends watch it with me again. They fell asleep in that first 20min scene ^^)
3. Mank
4. Sputnik (which I totally only saw because you reviewed it on this channel. I would never have even heard of it if it wasn't for you. So thank you for that!)
5. Tigertail (reminded me of that "Parents" episode from Master of None S01EO2)
6. Weathering With You ( from Makoto Shinkai, the guy who did "Your Name", which Letterboxd tells me you haven't seen yet either!)
7. The Invisible Man (Never thought this movie would have made my list when I first heard of it ^^)
8. Tenet (Very dry, but crunchy ^^)
9. His House (told you about already)
10. Time to Hunt (A much better movie than I was expecting when I heard it was a Korean Heist movie, highly recommanded)
Promising Young Woman just fell short of my top 10, landing at number 11. And lower down my list I also have Palm Springs and The Trial of the Chicago 7.
One other movie I would recommend to you Marianna, since you like time loops as much as I do, is "Koko-di Koko-da"!
Looking forward to your upcoming videos!
Thank you for sharing your list! Loved reading your quick thoughts on these )) And thank you for watching, of course!
But for me sound of metal over your list of film.
I'm so glad to have found you!
Thanks for sharing. Great analysis and keen to go through and watch most of the suggestions.
Thanks for watching!

I was expecting Pieces of a Woman to be your top spot after your review
That's why I said, I prioritize films I want to watch again for "favorites" lists. As much as I loved "Pieced of a Woman", I can't see myself ever rewatching it - so much of it is very tough to watch.
Top 5 of the movies that I've seen so far:
1. Promising Young Woman
2. Wolfwalkers
3. The Invisible Man
4. Borat 2
5. Palm Springs
Great video, Mariana! Thanks for the movie recommendations! Please do a "My Top 10 Favorite Books of 2020" video! 😊📚
The Vast of Night makes such great use of a limited budget.
Yes! I wonder what the director can do with an actual budget, I bet it would be great
what a great list!! some of these i haven't seen. subscribed!
So glad I found this channel
Great video once again and thank you for the recommendations. With that said I love and hate your reviews/recommendations list. Love the movie recommendations, hate adding them to my watch list and seeing how large the list is becoming.
On a serious note, I always enjoy every film you recommend so I can’t thank you enough!
Thank you so much! And trust me, I know all about really long watchlists - mine is on Letterboxd, and I'm pretty sure it's going to hit 1k soon. Yikes!
smokey eye game on point!
for real though 😍
It’s only game for those who play. For those who live it it’s life.
🧐

Except for Devs which I thought was just okay, I really vibe with this list out of the things I've seen. I'll have to check out the others.
Anyone else thought promising young woman is so similar to lady vengeance?
A hollywood movie ripping off a far superior foreign film? SHOCKING.
I had to watch 'I'm thinking of ending things' twice to really get everything. Good film!
It's definitely a multiple viewings type of movie
What did you think of The Queen’s Gambit? Never knew chess could be used for storytelling like that 🙂
I love your reviews, but I don't know what TIF is nor do I know what VOD is? I'm guessing one if is a film festival and the other a video streaming service for newer movies. Please advise. I love your recommendations and reviews.
you are very close :) TIFF = Toronto International Film Festival. VOD = Video on Demand (basically it means that all major vendors like iTunes, GooglePlay, AmazonPriveVideo etc give you the ability to rent and/or buy the movie)
