You probably have watched it, the South Korean movie "The Call" (2020). A mixture of few genres really. Along with Sci-fi, you get thriller/horror.
But for really obscure ones: ARQ (2016). Not the greatest movie, but a very solid time loop (I dig those), and a Japanese movie Tag (2015): This one very hard to describe, lol. The Japanese/Korean movies always fascinate me with their utter weirdness. Again, it is not amazing or something, but I think it is worth a watch.

  • @BooDamnHoo
    @BooDamnHoo ปีที่แล้ว +5

It's not a movie but is a limited run series. "Dark" is FANTASTIC and mind bending. It involves time travel and time loops that are handled superbly, complete with all the paradoxes they cause.

Predestination is definitely the best movie in this list. After 60 years of watching scifi movies, it is the best time travel movie I have ever seen. It turns the paradoxes inside out again, and again, and again...and again. It is the ultimate mind (i'll clean this up.) twister movie. It is also one of the few movies that actually improves on the source material. Don't let anyone give you spoilers. You have to let the details unfold, then watch it again to make srue you caught everything.

Primer was a good time travel movie I don't know if you have covered it. K-PAX is a interesting one in spite of how you might feel about Kevin Spacey. Silent Running is a good space movie for a younger generation a bit Green Peace like but it was the 70's. Another 70's great RollerBall a 1974 prediction of the coming new millennium in the year 2018 very well done. Time Lapse is a really unique time paradox movie. Just to name a few. Great channel !👋

Great list, Marianna. Faculty is childhood - great staple of the genre and one of the Robert's best . Predestination is truly mind-banding. Sarah Snook is great in this, sad she doesn't have a decent career after this. And Strange days one of the bleakest movies in sci-fi history. I would add Perfect Sense (2011) Movie about global pandemic, where people are start loosing their scenses. But which is more important than others? Also, Daybreakers is interesting sci-fi spin with supernatural speciesies (from directors of Predestination)

The opening to Strange Days with almost peerless steadycam work was so innovative for it's time and many of the concepts of the movie were also ahead of it's time unless you were William Gibson fan. The cast was amazing with the recently deceased Tom Sizemore giving a career best performance. And as Marianne has warned her viewers, Strange Days has by far one of the most disturbing scenes in film history. On a surface level, it's really disturbing. But if one thinks about it using a virtual reality mindset, it's absolutely horrifying and sick and the scene probably killed it's box office potential. And I did see this one in the theaters twice during it's brief run.

Great video! Made me realize I need to expand my sci fi viewing quite a bit! A lot of my favorites tend to be the classics like 2001, Solaris, They Live, etc. I’ll recommend a couple that I think are pretty underrated.
Repo Man (1984): The tone of it is pretty different from most of what you recommended, as it’s a comedy. But the humor in it is really off kilter and specific, which for me is refreshing for ‘80s movies. The sci fi bit is more secondary to hanging out with the characters but it’s fun.
From Beyond (1986): Maybe a bit more horror than sci fi, but the science is more emphasized than Gordon’s other similar film, Re-Animator. I know you weren’t a fan of that one, but the tone of this one is a lot more serious/existential and less overtly comedic. I like it a lot more for that reason. Great Lovecraft adaptation.
Color Out of Space (2019): Underrated Lovecraft movie I think. Again, the execution is more horror, but I love the sci fi ideas in this. To me it’s way more interesting for aliens to be this bizarre, incomprehensible trip experience than intelligent humanoid life forms. It’s got a crazy Mega Cage performance so it may not be for everyone, but I love it enough that I own it on blu ray.

Thank you for the list and thank you for including Strange Days - it's a stupidly good film and it's completely beyond my understanding how it isn't a cult classic nowadays (or maybe it is but for a very small part of the general audience).
As for the other underappreciated movies I'd like to propose two more cyberpunk films. Both of them are obcectively not that good, but very atmospheric and somehow I have a soft spot for them. First one is Johnny Mnemonic (1995) with Keanu Reeves, based on the short story by William Gibson, who's the father of the entire cyberpunk genre. Second one is The Gene Generation (2007), a low-budget production based on a comic book, starring Bai Ling.
I also have to mention Hardware (1990, sometimes known as MARK 13) - a sci-fi horror about a killing robot with Stacey Travis, Dylan McDermott and some great music.

I love Gattaca. Doesn’t seem to be streaming anywhere right now (free). I own that movie though. Recently heard they’re doing a series based off the film…? 😮 That movie is my favorite sci-fi film. Hands down.

Thank you. I like your choices and have only not seen Prospect, so thanks for the heads up. Since you includes Oxygen, I would also suggest having a look at Meander, a little seen French Sci-Fi film.

Predestination is my goto movie whenever someone asks me for a sci-fi suggestion. I don't think there's a more paradoxal storyline ever told.

I would like to recommend a film i recently watched on netflix, wesper, i loved the cinematography and the strange beautiful other worldly feeling of it, and the protagonist`s personality reminded me so much of Ellie from TLOU the game

I don't know if it would qualify as SciFi, but one of my favorite movies is "Perfect Sense" with Ewan McGregor and Eva Green. It's about a virus that causes people to lose their senses. It poses some very deep questions when you really think about it.
A show I just discovered (not SciFi related) on Prime but was made in 2019, is called "Too Old to Die Young." It's directed by the same guy who made "Drive," with Ryan Gosling. VERY slow paced show with minimal dialog, but it has some beautiful cinematography and music. Definitely not everyone's cup of tea, but based on your reviews of other films and series, I think you would appreciate it. It reminded me a lot of the "No Country for Old Men" type of storytelling and ending.

I think "Perfect Sense" definitely qualifies as sci-fi! It wasn't streaming anywhere when I was making the list so I couldn't include it, but I agree, it's a very under-appreciated film.

@@ImpressionBlend I just watched "Little Fish" tonight, based on your recommendations here. EXCELLENT film! It was so moving and so beautifully done. Some of the lines were so deep.
I'd never heard of it before, so thank you for putting it on the list.
Looking forward to watching your other recommendations this weekend.

My apologies but this move in scifi to have people's emotions center stage and - oh - put it in a scifi setting I find cheep and just poor drama. It feels like the writers can't make it in the drama movie/tv world (because they're not good enough), don't have the budget but know scifi fans are starved for content so they've come over to hijack scifi. And strangely enough, scifi fans know this and that's why these movies aren't 'making it big'. All of the topics undertaken in these movies are done better in drama movies. Like 2023's best sci fi movie to date according to fans!!! "Infinity Pool". Apart from being dead dull boring - a single thought: "Why don't they just give them a jail for life sentence while giving their double - or is it - the death penalty?" But your not allowed to think that because otherwise the 'meaningful point, or morality' of the movie is lost... My apologies but to quote Robbie Williams: "Oprah Winfrey Ricki Lake / Teach me things I don't need to know" Or, in other words, apathy. Scifi has always been about intergalactic warfare, exploring the unknown, aliens, action, horror, superheros... Or, if you want human drama in scifi, consider Chappie, Finch, District 13, Firefly. Because these movies described above? I'm sorry but they are just really poor dramas trying to find success by hijacking scifi.

Last and First Men is incredible in its cerebral reach.

The terrible digital cinematography puts me off almost all of them. I've developed a special sense for it after watching "Le Mans '66" (2019). Good movie but not shot on film. I'm sticking to movies shot on film only, the colours are fatter and rounder, it's superior.

On Marianne's advice, and its high ranking on Rotten Tomatoes by both critics and fans, I watched "Predestination" and I'm very sorry I did. I want my four bucks and 97 minutes back. It's a very slow-paced film. Sure, it's only 97 minute long, but it's based on a 5000-word short story. A lot of the story consists of two people talking in a bar. It just didn't have a lot of action. You have to follow the story very carefully to pick up the hints about what's actually going on. And I didn't buy the characters' actions at ALL. They HAD to make certain choices at certain times for the story to work as it did, and I wasn't sold on those choices as consistent with the character, or any human being. My advice is to read the short story, it's a much lesser investment in time and effort and for pretty much the same reward. (It's available for free online in PDF form.) I write this to warn others. I think the people who rated this film so highly on Rotten Tomatoes may have had an agenda. I don't know what Marianne's was, or if she had one.

Seven months late, but ... I really enjoyed the first 90% of "The Faculty", but the final reveal opened up a plot hole big enough to swallow the entire movie - why didn't Marybeth infest the gang of misfits who were investigating the strange happenings at the school?

Dios Mio! Mirage was an absolute ride. I wouldn't put it ahead of its cinematic compatriot Time Crimes, but it did not disappoint. Although I was half expecting the body in the suitcase at the end to be the boy. Tragic endings is my jam.

Indeed Predestination is an adaptation of Robert Heinlein's 1959 short story All You Zombies. Of course it could not be titled that now days, Zombies meant, in 1959 (in this films context) , something totally different. The short story is very short! The Spierig Brothers who adapted it were street smart , not only is it a faithful adaptation but it has been elaborated in a very clever way. Someone noted this is a time travel story about someone who never existed, does not exist, and will never exist! Talk about the perfect 'time travel' agent!
I don't know why more prose science fiction is not adapted , there is a whole lot that could be done with more intelligent and sophisticated stories than the 'original' films and TV I see.
(Noticed Sara Snook in this way before she became famous in Succession.)

Virtual Revolution superficially looks like a Blade Runner knockoff, but it's not. It surprised me, I thought it would be a bad video game adaptation, but it's actually a cyberpunk noir movie that punches way above its budget limitations to deliver a film about the harshness of reality.

1:48 "Do you have friends or lived ones that are important to your life?"
Yeah, that's kinda the definition of friends or loved ones. You might as well ask if we have mitochondria important to our cells.
