So I hope you have new upload for this weekend 👍🏼

    Great video as always and you're spot on with the preferred workflow revelation. While the MPC style interface is up front, I use BM3 as linear DAW and skip the pattern/scene modes use the pad interface for drums and the keyboard for synths and other instruments. I also record and edit MIDI rather than commit Poison or other AU/IAA instruments to a sample as you demonstrated in the video. BM3 is such an extremely deep beast, you can accomplish everything one could do in Cubasis and much more. With that level of functionality BM3 is bound to be a complex labrynth so Cubasis will appeal to those looking for a more immediate and simpler workflow.

    I have both installed. The Cubases here has a bigger learning curve than what am used to on the PC version. I was not able to get up and going because the flow is not that intuitive.
    While Beatmaker 3 seemed intimidating the fact was I had a track ready to go in minutes. Building actual drums beats is a breeze because the quantize is the best in it it's class. The flow just seemed to make more sense. If you are used to using Gadget as your DAW then the Beat Maker 3 work flow is going to be very similar in terms of having a track going.
    Cubasis is more a "go to work" kind of experience. The way I use Cubasis is for final mix down to use the WAVE's tools.
    So I will create in Beatmaker 3 or Korg Gadget and clean up in Cubasis.

    The way I see it, BM3 is for producing electronic compositions that do not require acoustic recordings (or at least rarely do). When you record apps or external synths, the sound is "clean" and quantized most of the time, which means there's less time spent on editing and more on arrangement and mixing. On the other hand, Cubasis is a fully-featured DAW complete with tools to edit, clean and polish even the roughest recording, which is crucial when recording acoustic material, like multitrack band sessions. All in all, both daws work well, but BM3 is stricly aimed at the electronic producer, while Cubasis fits the bill for almost any genre. It also all depends how "complex" your sessions are.

    Cubasis 2 is my favorite daw on iOS. I've tried them all. It's the most professional and has the best workflow. Lowest CPU usage and best customization. My only complaint is only being able to use each softsynth through IAA one time per song. There are work arounds to resolve this like audio share, copy, etc... But it would be nice to not have to go that route.

    Great video. I love Cubasis and am very comfortable in it, but I’m with you, it needs sub groups! I’m pretty traditional in my approach to creating music...one track at a time with both midi and audio so Cubasis really works for me. I grabbed BM3 and am impressed but there’s a big learning curve for me; I can tell it’s well made but I haven’t gotten very far with it, yet.
    I’m glad you’re starting to feel better, hope you get past it all soon. Hooray for 10K subs!!!

  • @RenattoVaz

    Hey Jakob! It’s a very awesome video again! If you wouldn’t mind, I’d like to do some appointments about BM3. First of all, if thinking in BeatMaker style were putted out of our mind, each pad could be an instrument channel (IAA or AU) and sampler instrument designed ( it’s possible to put more than one sample simultaneously on a pad, like a sub bass + wobble + melody in midi step sequencer!). So, every bank could be a hole set of instruments, becoming it in a kind of subgroup. Another interesting thing is Scenes mode to playing sessions of songs. And it is possible to playing midi tracks with AU instruments as well. In my opinion, AUXs could works with IAA (intending to send audio to external apps) and would be incredible if audiotracks could be recorded by live looping method.
    I like A LOOOOT BM3!
    Cheers!
    Ps: my apologies to English mistakes!

    I enjoy both - BeatMaker 3 pushes me to be more creative but Cubasis has an easier workflow so you can edit midi and audio while still seeing the other tracks in your project which is great. I get a bit lost with song mode and pattern mode in BeatMaker 3. But the sampling in BeatMaker 3 is fantastic.

    CONGRATS ON 10k SUBS!!!!!!!!!!!!! 👏👏👏👏👏 Looking forward to another one of your live streams, buddy! 👊
    Re: This video: Nice job, Jakob! You know I love me some BM3 action! 😍😍 imho, BM3 excels at a pattern-based workflow, where as Cubasis seems to be a more linear workflow.
    I am loving the pattern-based and highly-sample-based workflow of BM3. I feel like BM3 lets me take little ideas and bits and pieces from all of the iOS apps that I love as well as my own samples, and bring everything together in a very creative sequencing environment that makes sense to me. Gotta love that! 😍😍

    I'm not a Doctor but remember that old adage, "Starve a cold feed a fever," that being said I own both BM3 & Cubasis 2. I'm not that comfortable with BM3 mainly the track view. My first software sequencer was Sonar, then FL. Studio 10, then Maschine Komplete 8 then Cubase 6. Out of them all, Cubase 6 was my go to choice on my old 2009 laptop. So in that regard I like Cubasis because its similar to Cubase. In my case its the way the track view is laid out. Good video.

  • @danekilstrup
    @danekilstrup 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great video! Even with the cold you are a pleasure to listen to. I’d like to think that if you have room on your machine both of these programs are incredibly valuable music creation tools, at a steal of a price. Beatmaker says what it is right in the name. Cubasis has Waves plug-ins.
    Although very different both are amazingly powerful.
    Cubasis does get an extra thumbs up for being one of the most stable apps ever, which is EXTREMELY important when recording tracks.

    It seems like you have to own as many of these apps as you can get that can help you. Every app has a limitation, but the limitations go unnoticed when you just don’t care. It’s all about workflow whatever you need for the time of your creation. Great video

    You're not wrong, I have both these, and also Gadget, iMaschine 2, and GrooveRider GR16, they all are different and all suit my needs in different ways. I welcome having lots of different workflows available, because they exercise my creativity in different ways.

    • @perrypelican9476
      @perrypelican9476 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      JiggyWig how do you work with imaschine 2 with no piano roll editor. How do you deal with mistakes? BM3 has all that imaschine 2 has plus a ton more. I am very curious why anyone would use imaschine 2. I am open to all ideas. I am not saying its bad, i just am curious how to work with an app like that. I must be missing something.

    • @JiggyWig
      @JiggyWig 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      iMaschine has a lot of the instruments as sampled hits so you can step sequence them as with the drums. For the true melodic instruments I just re-record until I get it right. What I like about iMaschine is the huge library of sounds it comes with, despite the shortcomings I can often get the core of a track idea together quite quickly. It's basic operation is very simple, and so pretty quick. And then, as with all the other apps, I drag eveything over to my desktop computer and Ableton the heck out of it.

  • @emil-9432
    @emil-9432 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good comparison but @7:15 you mentioned it’s not meant for sequencing midi and rather for sampling. I had the same opinion at first, but then after using BM3 for some time it’s actually does this very well. One of the interesting features that I haven’t seen anywhere is say you record a small beat, you can then record stuff on another track while the beat keeps on looping as long as you play. In other DAWs you have to copy-paste that beat if you want this functionality. Just discovered this 2 days ago. But the monitoring function in Cubasis is not available in BM3 sadly. Yes, that’s probably because BM3 has more complex routing (very awesome routing letting you do anything you want), but I want to be able to on/off my instruments easily. And Cubasis does this best. Basically you’re right, the two workflows are different enough to have both apps.

    Hey there! I'm just your average classical musicians looking into finding a super portable setup to take with me on remote trips. What app should I use? I want to a) export field recordings I will make with my zoom h1n through sound card reader to my iPad. I don't want to manipulate it much, maybe equalise and that's it. So I need a DAW suggestion with which I can sample the sounds in layers. Have some fun with experimenting with layers. And then add simple musical or melodic layers or "responses" to the field recordings. Nothing complex, just wouldn't mind some artistic freedom. (keep in mind I'm a violinist, pianist) so preferably something not too complex lol but still looking forward to playing around with weird synths etc. (like I said no super complex beats, just kinda ambient chord, melodic layers, ya know?). Any suggestions for a single DAW with this capability or a good combination of DAWs that work together. I'm broke, can't afford buying and trying all. I have a few months before heading off on my hs gap year. Any suggestions welcome!!

    @emil-9432 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    One of the reasons BM3 might be the choice is routing. If you like what you see done with AUM, you can do it all in BM3. All kinds of deep processing with things controlling each other via MIDI. Even with latest update, you only get 5 insert slots per track in Cubasis. And you can not rearrange them, say if you wanted to try to put that effect before another etc. That’s pretty messed up, considering how easy it is to program this important feature. You can easily move fx around in BM3 and there’s no limitation on how many you can have.
    So, if I want to record some basic tracks, some guitar, drums piano, etc, Cubasis is simpler and quicker to use. It’s just very straightforward, pick and instrument and record. Solo, monitor, mute. If I want to do more complex fx and sound processing I pick BM3.
    The ease of use of the sampler in BM3 is amazing. Once you figured it out it just sooo intuitive and simple to make a bank. (A bank is like a sound font).
    One of the most important features that makes BM3 more “pro” app is it’s project management. When you open a project, it’s open inread-only mode, and unless you hit “save” it’s not going to be overwritten. Alongside, an auto-saved file is regularly generated. This alone makes me want to consider switching to BM3 completely. In Cubasis, as soon as you open a file, anything you do is written immediately onto it. (In Auria too).

    Awesome video bro!
    I really do love the sub channels in BM3 so I use that to get my beats going. But like you, I’m more of a linear recorder guy, so Cubasis fits my creative workflow better. It’s really a blessing to have both because for sampling, nothing comes close to BM3!
    So there you have it, get both!

    • @pianoyan
      @pianoyan 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MusicMan4Christ MM4C That’s exactly how I feel about the two of these. I’ve never really got on with any of the traditional samplers that made the move to iPad, but bm3's sampler is deep, and reasonably quick to get started with. But there’s no way I can see myself leaving the traditional daw environment of cubasis any time soon. Workflow wise, it’s Cubasis for me but if I can bring in beats from BM3 I get the best of both worlds. Of course, when Nanostudio 2 drops, I’m hoping it’ll combine the two worlds. The original Nanostudio is still fantastic, so I have high hopes. Great video, Jakob!

    • @JakobHaq
      @JakobHaq  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hi! Yes it’s an extremely valid concern. I’ve used a plethora of different DAW’s over the 25+ years that I’ve been producing music.
      .
      If theres something I’ve learned along the way, it’s that I don’t need a new tool when the one I have is working so well for me. However new tools can add something extra to the mix (no pun intended) and change the way I work. So I still look for new things to try. It’s a good way of keeping my creativity from stagnating.
      .
      So whenever I find a tool with neat function(s) that I like I always ask myself how much I need it now? How much will it enhance my workflow? Will it make anything easier for me?
      .
      I ponder these questions for a while and If find my answers favourable towards getting that tool, I’ll continue by asking myself if I want to invest the time it will take to learn how to utilise it properly?
      .
      I also ask myself how much of the tool I have to learn? I mean one doesn’t have to understand everything in a reverb plugin in order to use it right? Problem is that when it comes to DAW’s is that it’s an entire environment. Its basically the center of the studio and it’s where stuff really need to “flow” and “click”.
      .
      I mean if the DAW is hampering production flow then it’s just an obstacle and not a tool.
      .
      Either way this is how I see it. Getting into a new DAW is like starting out a new job at ... uh let’s say an office. Yeah you do recognise some of the stuff normally found in an office like co-workers (of course), lunch room, printers, coffee machines just to name a few random things.
      .
      Now you know how to talk to people, you know how to use a coffee machine and you know how to use a printer. Problem is that it’s going to take time to learn the names of coworkers, their moods, who does what and who to avoid (yeah ...).
      .
      You’ll also discover that the coffee machine is of a brand that serves disgusting coffee (but everyone prefers it that way). You’ll find that the printer needs constant toner replacement and they don’t have a system in place for it, so you end up having to do it yourself which constantly breaks your flow. Yeah you’re getting some work done but now you’re functioning at half capacity due to all these unknowns and uncertainties. It’ll take a while to get into it and after six months you finally do. But this is when you start feeling that your not enjoying your job.
      .
      The environment is wrong and even though you like the cafeteria downstairs with the nice lady that always smiles and wishes you a great day, you can’t help to feel a bit unfulfilled with the job you’re doing. You miss being able to get new staples from “Ivan” on the third floor back at the old job because he was a cool dude and always gave you extras. Now you have to send in a request through Martin from accounting (grade A douche) and you get half of the staples you wanted and it takes two days before you get em.
      .
      Your workflow is being hampered, you feel uncomfortable and you’re not proud of the work you do. So you end up quitting your job.
      .
      So has it all been for nothing?
      .
      No because learning what you don’t like is just as important as learning what you do like. Not only that. Maybe it turns out that you did learn a new way of doing your filing and now you’re 50% more productive at that ... where am I going with this you’re wondering .... 😅
      .
      Well don’t be afraid of testing new things. Just do not expect to make and produce music that you feel satisfied with when starting out with a new DAW. Go into it as if it was a new job and get to know stuff. Give it time and see what happens. You’ll find out whether it suits you or not. There’ll be a lot of frustration in the beginning but it’ll pass. If it doesn’t you’ll still have the good old GarageBand! Every DAW has their own “Ivans” and “Martins”.
      .
      I don’t know how I managed to turn this into a story but I hope you got something out of it. 😅👍🏼 Thanks for watching the video!

    Great video. I own both but right now I only have BM3 installed. The main reason is, the small foot print of BM3 compared to Cubasis. I only have a 16gb iPad and space is limited. I use BM3 for sampling and drum beats mostly, but have fun making sound effects as well. For the more traditional DAW like Cubasis, I do use Logic Pro X on my macbook. Having said that, if I owned a larger capacity iPad, then I would have Cubasis installed as well and it would most likely be the hub of my mobile setup. It fits my workflow better as far as a more linear approach, although I would still use BM3 as my main sampler and drum machine. I would most likely just feed it into Cubasis to arrange the tracks.

    In the desktop Cubase sampler track, when you map a sample across the keyboard you get the option to maintain the length the sample or not as you play the sample on the keyboard. When you play a sample with Cubasis MiniSampler on a keyboard the length of the sample necessarily varies as the pitch varies.
    Can you play a sample maintaining its length across a keyboard with Beatmaker? Can Beatmaker be used as an instrument inside Cubasis? Is there any app which can be used inside Cubasis which lets you play a sample at different pitches while maintaining the length of the sample?
    In Korg Gadget, Vancouver seems to be the same as Cubasis MiniSampler in this respect.

    You know, it’s a bit off topic, but I just got Nanostudio 2, which has a linear workflow unlike BM3. I much prefer the BM3 workflow but the stability of auv3 in Nanostudio is SO much better. I wish there was a way to setup scenes in Nanostudio or to have easier auv3 access in BM3. A blend of those two worlds I think would be the most conducive to live improv. Oh well. Do you recommend any particular sampling approach in BM3 to make your sampled parts more playable? I hate to give up my Model 15 controls just for the sake of stability...

    As I understand it BeatMaker 3 could be used to make a beat that would be looped to be part of a song in Cubase for example. If BM3 works as an instrument in Audiobus than it can be recorded on the timeline of Cubase! Like the beat section of the song for example. Then you would have it as a sub mixing group! C.Q.F.D. ! :)

      I hear you. I have played with it a few hours. It's fun to tinker on the pads, but I still haven't figured out how to record MIDI in from an external keyboard, and use an AU instrument on the track.
      I was hoping I could use it as a DAW, since it costs about half of what Cubasis costs. (25 vs 50 USD)

    Hi all,
    Cubasis is great, multi track visuals , easy midi assignment , easy audio track insertion. Plenty of effects to play with . However , cannot assign midi controls to effects and knobs and faders within Cubasis. Not good if you like to live jam using midi units and play with the sound as you go. This can be circumnavigated with some audio units by directly midi learning to your units but this becomes a bit of a chore and unless you have multiple midi units very limiting. Also the sampling ability as you stated is cumbersome and no where near the likes of beat maker and iMpc Pro.
    I have never used beatmaker but I used iMpc Pro before I got Cubasis and as far as I can tell they are quite similar. As you said the sampling ability of these apps knocks spots of Cubasis. However iMpc style apps are harder to work with and require a lot page swapping and an organised workflow ethic is a must. Not so great for absolute beginners . However if you trying to achieve that true EDM sound I do believe iMpc Pro , beatmaker etc are essential.
    What I would love is for Cubasis to firstly bring midi learn into its fold, and then maybe develop a audio unit that is more in keeping with Mpc style, that can then be inserted with all the control you expect to come from an audio unit.
    Tabletop came very close to achieving this but was seriously limited.
    It almost seems as if we can have one but not the other.
    If anyone out there knows of software that includes all the functionality I have talked about without compromising anything please inform me!

    You can edit many notes and use audio units inside of MPC software. I have them both they pretty much can do the same thing that the other one can do but the file system is different that is all. I have 100 hours inside of both apps

    You forgot to mention that you can put whole iaa/au/built in fx chain for each pad on bm3. That filter you showed was for single sample layer on a pad, not filter for whole pad. You could had also shown. And bm3 is for sequencing midi also, much easier and better midi sequencing imo than cubasis. I got bm3, cubasis and auria and much much prefer bm3 for anything where i need a daw, sampler or sequencer. Imo too traditional daw like thing just doesent suit to touch screen

    I have BeatMaker 3 and yeah it’s great for manipulating samples but for song building I really struggled with it, workflow isn’t smooth and it’s confusing to navigate. I find Garageband so easy to jump into and create and because Cubasis has a similar interface I’m considering getting the app. Great video thanks, I’m off to finger my stuff 🤣

      I got it and came from GarageBand. It's nice because it's like GarageBand but you can do sends and automation in Cubasis. I just use the Koala Sampler as a AU3 for sampling. Koala has the best workflow for me.

      Use what you have to the highest potential. That's the great way to be productive. This new apps for iPad pro is ok product, but PC or Mac still more powerful for music production.
      I'm here just seeing what's going on and learn that I'll wait 2 (two) more years for iPad to be powerful enough for music production.
      But for beat making, the beatmaker 3 is good enough.

    I don't understand why one would want to use Cubasis. It's a really basic copy of the desktop app with hardly any features. Beatmaker adds a new workflow comparing to desktop DAWs. Like an MPC. Why use Cubasis instead of a laptop with some version of Cubase?

    I’ve been using beatmaker since the first version. Bm3 is my go to. Once you learn the interface it’s a breeze tho they are areas that could be improved. IMPC 2 is a close 2nd. I have Cubasis 2 but I’m not a big fan of linear arrangement anymore. Bm3 reminds me of Ableton with how they have things set up. I’m going to have to challenge myself and learn Cubasis tho especially since they have those wave plugins.

    So I guess BM3 is beeter for live gig as it's easier to make samples?

    • @JakobHaq
      @JakobHaq  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cubasis was never intended for live-gig type of usage and I wouldn't use it as such. It was designed as a production tool. The interface isn't live friendly etc. BM3 on the other hand, well I haven't tried using it as a live tool either so I can't really say much on it. I've pretty much used that one as a production tool too. But I can imagine that a lot of stuff can be done with it live when used with a Midi controller. I'd recommend that you go over to my buddy Dean and ask him about using BM3 live. His channel is "Electronisound Audio". That guy knows BM3 better than me LINK: th-cam.com/channels/X1L0U_AaeJrmRVr8JhCq0g.html

      @JakobHaq  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope, I’ve never been able to befriend it’s interface. I’ve tried several times over the past 6-7 years to get into it, but it never works out. I’ve been a Cubase (desktop) user for two decades and so naturally I started using Cubasis as soon as I found it. I also like KORG Gadget and Nanostudio. But for some reason, because of the look and it’s interface, Garageband just does not work for me. It’s why I’ve never done a feature of it on the channel. It’s a good D.A.W and it has everything you need to get going with production, but it’s not for me. It’s the same thing with Auria too.

MIDI is definitely easier on CB2, but when working with loops BM3 is my go to tool. Another thing I would add is the sound library factor on BM 3. Third party sounds are big plus.

    Why do you always record yourself wiping the ipad screen with the cloth? It kind of seems like a sales gimmick but it's also like you're wiping a babys ass. Often.
    Beatmaker 3 ftw, because it has more of a playground / funhouse feel. No matter what screen you're in there's always something else to tap on that will lead to another window of fun and functional tools. I've had experience with a number of traditional DAWS for years so going by that it would seem like I'd prefer Cubase and it's traditional linearity, but it's dry and boring. The design of Beatmaker is just.....right. It's much more fun and inspiring to use.
