🤯 WRONG! NanoStudio 2 CAN LOAD AUv3s. Somehow my brain has blocked that out. I made a whole video about it >>> th-cam.com/video/zjUKK_lv5bk/w-d-xo.html - 🤦♂️ Assumptions is the mother of all f*ck ups!
I was actually surprised, I never expected you will say that wrong, I thought they stopped auv3 support. So I went to check in my ipad if auv3 support is still there in NS2 😅
I listened to the whole presentation. I’m a guitarist using midi guitar 2 & a Roland Juno G & M Audio 25. I’m 64 and diving into this app world and loving it. It is a learning curve.
Man remember when you got your first guitar and ya learned 14 chords: 7majors and 7minors. And after that some one told you about some flats and sharps. And you thought 24 chords was plenty for now. I’m 64 too and I never thought I’d ever be writing. Then the 21st century happened !
I used to love the iPad. Started out in 2014 on the ipad but now invested in a MacBook Pro and ableton. Much smoother and powerful but my roots are in Auria and Cubasis. Getting back to IPad is very creative and liberating even now. But I find myself in front of ableton 90 percent. Just on another level. More power to the loyal iPad musicians.
Me too.. I love the iOS world but getting a PC and Mixcraft 9....So much easier...I’ll use Studiomux in conjunction w the iPad for stuff like GeoShred, etc..If I had to choose one though it would be NS2
😂 MPC lovers don’t freak out. I’m not done yet 😄 . Fantastic vid Jacob. As an old analogue synth head dating back to 1981 I found this very informative even though I had Cubase v1.0 on Atari ST, used beatmaker & nanostudio about 8 years ago and still use Gadget iOS. Finding GarageBand iOS pretty useable these days. My fav DAW was FL Studio v2.0 with audio from 2011/12. (not ver 3.0, didn’t like interface or look) Wrote some powerful stuff on FL Studio v2.0. Still have it on an iPad2. Keep up the great work Jacob. Love your vids.
Cubasis is the gold standard, all roads lead me to Cubasis, but, and I don't really know why, I love Korg Gadget Pro!! Other apps must be good or very good, and I'm not talking about BeatMaker or NanoStudio but about Auria Pro or IK's, but I consider them too expensive to NOT BE Cubasis 😆😆 However it is also true that Korg Gadget Pro with all its IAPs is the most expensive of all, but I already said it: I love the Korg Gadget Pro, and I love the Korg Module Pro, and the Korg M1, all my midi controllers are Korg, my arranger is a Korg, even my metronome and tuner are Korg!!Anyway...Great job!! Greetings from Chile Jakob!!
5:17 - I’m lying in bed watching this video, and it’s a very well thought out and put together video by the way, and I just HAD TO STOP and LET YOU KNOW how grateful I am that you took the care to make a decisive point in the video to put your advert break in. It’s SO IRRITATING when the adverts just suddenly come on and interrupt the content in the middle of a sentence, and since I watch a lot of technical content that’s even more frustrating, and since a lot of it is in the field of audio or video production, I feel like the content creators should know better and make more effort to make that less frustrating. So THANK YOU for doing that so well. Now I will continue the rest of the video 😊
Thank you! Btw I had to remove the add splash screens because I got a lot of complaints about that. But I still make sure to never cut of sentences with my ad breaks and I try to put them at places where there’s a natural pause. And I don’t litter my videos with adds either. Thank you for noticing! 🧡
Jakob Haq I definitely noticed and appreciated it. I’ve sine watched the rest of the video and wow! 😮 not only has it helped me to have a starting point to look at for making a transition from laptop based work to iPad os - but the way you told your story gave it another level of interest and the quality of the video overall is amazing. I have subscribed and will be watching more in future :) 👍🏼
I like to write in Nanostudio and Gadget and then send audio and/or midi files over to Cubasis for final mixing and effects or to use different synths. Usually via AudioShare.
hey there, i just found this video. Thanks for everything you do. I LOVE YOUR MELLOW ALBUM. i honestly haven't listened to anything else as I just love that album. do more mellow stuff! hehe. Take care and keep up the good work.
Great video! It clearly shows the strengths and weaknesses of each app! I have been recording and mixing my music - mostly acoustic jazz - in Cubasis for some years now and what I really like about this app is the workflow and the possibilities for editing audio tracks. For me, everything is organized very well and works simply like I would expect it. However, when I started producing some electronic music a few months ago it didn't take more than one week until the absence of a sidechain function and a convenient sampler made me switch to Beatmaker 3 which I had already installed earlier. As I had never used it before, I struggled a lot in the beginning. It is so different from Cubasis! The sampler is just brilliant, though, and gradually, I started to understand how everything works. I realized that this app is exactly what I was looking for because not only the sampler is great but all the other options for working with midi tracks and effects, too. Therefore, what I really like about this video is the point that every of the four DAWs is your favorite one but for a specific purpose.
I loaded Nano Studio 1 on my iPad 1st gen recently just to make it useful again. Not many apps work on it anymore (it runs iOS 5), but NS1 is more than enough to keep it around for some casual fun. I love Nano Studio 2 also of course, but I primarily use Cubasis because it is the most generically flexible DAW for iOS. If NS2 had audio tracks, though, I would probably use it a lot more just because it is so well designed. And yes, the built in synth and drum machine in NS2 is so good, it is easy to forget it supports AUv3. Ha!
Brilliant brilliant brilliant video, appreciate you doing this, and it's excellent how you've approached it. Excellent perspective. Also, mad props on the mellow album. Loves it.
Hey, Jakob! First, the tracks: 1:50, 3:52...Awesome!! Which underscores the point you emphasize in the video, that you’re here to make music...and finding an environment with sounds and methods that inspire and work for you is as good as it gets. Still, it’s good to get away...you may even find a second home. I’m still blown away that we can carry this stuff in our (oversized) pockets.
I find it that different apps/tools inspire me in different ways. Sometimes there is more than one option that is the right one for you. Also, It might not be affordable to use several DAW's if you primarily work using PC or Mac, but it is definitely affordable to do so if you are using iOS apps!
I‘m having huge problems with Cubasis 3. I posted in Steinberg‘s forum yesterday. Sometimes Midi notes aren‘t played, sometimes midi-instruments sound completely different from what they should sound and I have to restart the iPad .... Things like this have never happened in Cubasis 2.
Yeah I found similar bugs over here. But I’ve actually had weird MIDI/keyboard bugs happening in all versions of Cubasis. There was one bug that only happened with some AUv3s in Cubasis 2 where I got lag or no notes when playing the internal keyboard unless I had the App window up too. It disappears after a few updates.
I have been using Roland Zenbeats and prefer it over everything else. Needs some tweaks but has a lot going for it including audio tracks and AU automation.
I've heard that they will be integrating Zenbeats with some of their other hardware that utilize the Zen Core engine. I'd start using it if it worked well with my MC 707.
First, my comments were just about that I use the same ones, when I go mobile, but...Stop.. YOU are the guy with the mellow album? Respect, one of the best albums in the genre I am actually listening to. And, being Chillwalker and publishing my Tracks since 2002...there aren't a lot of them. Face it...the most music from the genre is boring! So: Hughe thumbs up from my side of the screen!
Aw thank you so much. Means a lot to me that you like my mellow album. Btw there is a short documentary about the album if you haven’t seen it. Link: th-cam.com/video/xPE7bUk5WRw/w-d-xo.html I’ll make sure to check your your music too. 😊
I totally get where you are coming from Jacob. I have had this same conversation about macOS apps over the years. I started in windows back in 95, using a cracked version of acid Pro. Into thousand four, I got my first copy of Ableton's version 4. And 05, I picked up a copy of reason. In 2011, I started working with ProTools because I was working in audio post production. I continued to work with Ableton, and reason. This confused friends. But for me it made sense. Reason, it was great for putting together a quick pop and hip-hop tracks. Ableton, Is more of a creative pallet, for experimental sound design. ProTools, I was using strictly for sound to picture. No longer work with ProTools, because I got out of Hollywood, and when I look at a ProTools session I have anxiety attacks LOL, only half kidding.
Another great video, Jakob. IMO Beat Maker 2 had a great MIDI editing interface. When 3 came out I was looking forward to using it...but it was removed. There are a few important modifications Intua could make to make the use of BM3 much more efficient but honestly, I get the feeling no one is really listening. In the sample editor you can not select different layers in the layer stack on the left and have them become active in the editor, you have to mute all but the one you need to hear-very unfinished. The stop button could be single press return to last position and double press return to start. The MIDI editing tools do not perform as expected, zoom behaves in an odd fashion, the finger tool places notes as does the two other note placement tools-the finger tool should be navigation with maybe a long press to change to selection box. Or the BEST option...bring back BM2 editing tools. Thanks for another great video!
She was right. Describing these from the perspective of what those mean to you musically was the best path. I do own those four apps (well, I have Cubasis 2, not 3). Haven’t used them that much since adopting AUM. NS1 was part of my entry into iOS musicking, at the time, along with ThumbJam. Did enjoy how it sounded but the workflow didn’t stick, for me. Even less so with BM1 and BM2. Bought NS2 and BM3, tried them a few times… I’d need to carefully follow a tutorial to get my head around them. The second phase of my iOS musicking came through Korg Gadget, around the time iWavestation came out. That pseudo-DAW did allow me to discover quite a few things, musically. It was quite satisfying. And I occasionally use the plugins from the macOS version. The cool thing about Gadget itself, I find, is about the simplicity of putting things together. Like a simplified version of Live. It’s great that you can work on the same projects between the two platforms and the Ableton Live Project export is a good idea (which makes me wish Bitwig Studio were able to load those!). My main issue really is the lack of AUv3 support. That and the lack of MPE support. Which brings me back to Cubasis 2. Its MPE support is fine, so I occasionally do record things in there. I wouldn’t do much editing. It’s really about putting things together. Thing is, though, I achieve most of the same thing in a “DAWfree mode” using AUM (or apeMatrix or AB3). I’ll record little MIDI snippets in Photon or use some AU MIDI plugins (like Rozeta Bassline, Riffer, or Autony) to generate some patterns. Or I’ll play a softsynth using my windcontroller. Or I’ll noodle for a while with a ROLI Lightpad M Block. Playing with a whole bunch of AUv3 plugins is so rewarding and inspiring and fun and easy… My actual vote would be: none of these. The one I’ve used the most is Cubasis 2.
I use Cubasis exclusively. I like 3, but I'm missing the transparency of clips on the timeline, where you can see audio and MIDI underneath subsequent clips. I used that facility a lot for crossfading, but now I must use an extra track. Also BUG ALERT - audio fades on the clip on the time line are only registered if you play BEFORE the clip starts. C2 used to allow you to adjust clip volume on the fly. Again, this can be solved by using multiple tracks, but in a complex edit that's not really feasible. I don't use Gadget, because the simplistic looping nature of the thing just bugs me. Fine if you wanna make the same brainless EDM as everyone else, but I like my music to be more organic and less rigid. Too many multiples of 4!
Nu-Trix the Synth Guy deserves a lot more subscribers if you ask me. And that applies also to you, Jakob. I’m subscribed to many iOS dedicated channels and I always see a low number of subs. This must be more because the content you guys all provide is very, very good and useful.
Surprised you didn't mention Music Studio 1&2. One of the most solid iOS DAWs. I believe development stopped after the guy behind it was headhunted by Steinberg to do their iOS Cubasis version. Music Studio is still king when it comes to handling stubborn IAA type apps'n'stuff.
I have to give this a thumbs up for the "Mellow Album"... Really nice to hear your melody work. Would you do a similar video for AUM vs. Keystage vs. Camelot????????
I think you’re spot on, I feel the exact same way about everything you said. I suspect though, when they release logic for iOS, and the power of the new iPad Pro, everything will change. No perfect daw for me yet, but soon there might be. Thanks for such a great vid
Fantastic video. I’m just like you, the environment affects the music so much and I can’t really stick with one DAW. I am trying to decide whether or not to buy Cubasis - I have the other 3 and find myself using NS2 the most. Thanks for the vid brother PS - I love how you say Jakob!
BeatMaker 3 is my weapon of choice (coming from almost 15 years of MPC use). Its been a bit unstable for me lately though 😒 . I think i wanna try the Cubasis 3 and BeatMaker 3 combo, to see how my work flow could change. Great video!
Is this due to a slower /older iPad or is the app the issue? Just curious. Tryna decide on wether or. Or to get rid of my mpc live for an iPad as one still needs a computer to make a complete beat to upload somewhere.
I’m a hybrid (house music) producer, using mostly Aum on iPad, but watched a ton of videos about these apps and really thinking about grabbing Beatmaker. I know it’s not made to make a whole track but that’s not my intent with it. I just wanna have a different workflow, to sketch some ideas quickly, exporting them out to my main Daw (or recording them in when I’ll have my audio interface for my iPad. Cubasis is not my thing at all. That synth in Nanostudio looks and sounds amazing, if they release it as an AUv3 I’ll buy it on that day (so please hahahaha 🙂 Quite the same feelings with Gadget, I’d need some of their gadgets badly as au plugins but I don’t like the fact they are that closed.
I use a few different iOS DAWs as well, fully agree that having the flexibility is worth paying for a few different ones. I bounce between Gadget and BM3 mostly.
Definitely a mix of both, there are a lot of good synths on iPad but with the V Collection from Arturia and the Komplete 12 collection from Native Instruments I find a lot of higher quality synth sounds in my Ableton instance. I also really like Valhalla Verb and Serum FX, plus I mix and master with Izotope plugins.
Great video Jakob! I had already commented...an emotional outburst towards Cubasis 3, but like you (and perhaps because of you), I own all 4 of these DAWS...and some other less DAW type DAWS lol. I like you, realize where each one fits with regard to my music production. I use Cubasis the most because that’s my “final production app” where the finished product of whatever song I’ve created will end up to be mastered. Additionally, this applies to my DAWless/Standalone equipment like the OP-1, OP-Z etc. I use Gadget predominantly via iOS (even though I have the desktop version - I’ll use my iPad first). I have fallen out of NanoStudio and honestly feel BM3 has been lying comatose for a while now but whenever I want to sample or make a trap style beat I’ll generally start there.
Kai Aras is actually the developer of Shockwave and VOLT synth. He is one of the devs I talk to a lot. Matt Borstel ( 3:00 ) is the developer of NanoStudio 2. 👍🏼 I should probably have written that out under Kais name instead of just app developer.
Great video!👊🏼....but I was waiting till the end to see if you mentioned Auria Pro at all....nope. Oh well, I just recently heard about it & bought it & I’m at the beginning stages of checking it out. Of course you are specifying SYNTH apps & not iOS DAW’s so maybe that was why. I get the impression that Auria Pro at least appears to look like Pro Tools but I’m a moron on specifics. I am interested in checking out the couple of apps you mentioned that I do not have(NS2 the Korg one). Again great content & I love your videos! 💯🔥
Thank you! . I would still put Cubasis into the DAW category. It’s the only one out of these four that has been designed as a conventional DAW/arranger type interface, hence the title “DAW and Music Production Apps”. They all definitely fall in under >production< at least. 😅 . Auria Pro isn’t on my list because I could never befriend it. I’ve tried several times over the years (since 4-5 years) back and the interface just does not work for me. It’s the same thing with GarageBand. It does not mean that I think that those apps are bad, they simply just do not “click” with me. . I do agree with you on Auria feeling/looking Pro Tools-esque. I think Pro Tools users would be able to become very good friends with Auria.
Thanks Jakob. I believe beyond the functionality is comformt and the sound you are able to get from each one of these. I love starting ideas on Blocswave which is not mentioned here, and then moving on to CB3 or Auria Pro for developing the ideas further. Beermaker 3 is my favorite sampler.
Right now I’ve gone back to using my Novation AudioHUB 2x4 (they don’t sell them anymore though). I like it because I don’t have to add an extra powered hub to my setup since the AudioHUB has one built into it. This allows me to power both my nanoKEY and nanoKONTROL midi controllers.
Thanks for this very, very transparant edition Jakob, we loved every minute! Thanks for showing the old machines, as we are from the Atari1040 generation 😉 Small note: at the end of the video, left side screen, check your Paypal address. For best results: it's without '.com' 👍 hope this helps.
Aw man, I’ve managed to mess up my paypal add again 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️ Im hopeless 😂😂😂
Cubasis 🕺🏾 Gadget... 👌 Cubasis closest to traditional DAW & great hub for AU plug-ins * Gadget = Reason for IOS.... Propellerhead missed the boat and Korg grabbed the opportunity
Another great video.... I have been using Cubasis 3 but have been on my laptop recording on Cuba’s 10.5 Pro..... I need to get out of my comfort zone and work on music on my new iPad Pro 2020! I will def check out Beatmaker 3!
Superb video young man. Don’t worry about the slip up, we all make them. I said something about Zenbeats that wasn’t entirely correct recently in iPad Musician and this 1 guy got quite upset. Well, I never said I was clever! I entirely agree with you about Cubasis 2+3 and I have a lot to say about it but haven’t said much in my videos because the iOS landscape does change very fast. I don’t use Beatmaker, never tried it. I’d say for me, it’s Cubasis, Gadget, AUM and NanoStudio 2. I wish I could include Auria Pro but it crashes so often that I don’t use it much now even though I’m a beta tester because I lose so much time in it.
Thank you Jamie! Btw beta testing is very time consuming. There are so many things that needs testing and the worst is when you find a bug, but you’re unable to properly reproduce it. Those are the worst. 😅
Jakob Haq Yeah, and that happens all the time in Auria Pro. I feel bad, I want to help them but also - I want to make lots of music! By the way, I messaged you - I finally got MI Rack as you suggested - and this happed - th-cam.com/video/U7VjdMkG328/w-d-xo.html
Jakob Haq Great thanks, at risk of showing my naivety, when exporting midi from Gadget into a new DAW, do you retain the original sound of the gadget, or does the sound change to an instrument in the new DAW?
Korg Gadget and Cubasis 2 are my tools of choiche. I use gadget for creating the track and use Cubasis for mixing/fine tuning. What I like about Gadget is the ease of use and large selection of different gadgets/synth sytles. A good feature of Cubasis is the Cubase export option which I use for archiving my projects.
I never used a pc for music, so never cubase, nor anything else, so cubasis is alien to me 🤷♂️. Ipad fave ended up being nanostudio, after passing thru audiobus and finding 'digital glue' isn't necessarily my thing.
Once NanoStudio 2 has audio, it will be a different beast. So stable and the workflow is like water. BeatMaker 3 is super buggy but that sample editor 🤤👌🏻
Also, I hate to point it out dude but I really think you should re-edit the video and audio where possible to do justice to NS2’s auv3 support. It’s mentioned too many times. Keep up the good work brother.
Great video !! Loved it. I hate how Cubasis 3 was launched unfinished. I lost hours of work. Decided not to use it any more (lost trust completely) and went for DAW on my Mac + gadget iOS combo with AUM.
Hi! Nice vídeo! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience. I have Nanostudio 1 and 2 and i think they are amazing. Just want to share that Nanostudio 2 is Áudio Unit 3 compatible. The Nanostudio 1 don’t allow to use Áudio unit plugins. Great job! Keep doing great work!
A great post. Yes it's right. The app has to fit. You must have a feeling of "I feel at home". One of the reasons why I personally don't get along with Drambo or Gadget at all. They just don't fit for me. But BeatMaker3 (sometimes) and NanoStudio2 (often). I love AuriaPro when it comes to professional audio recording and AUM (is it actually a real DAW?) When it comes to playing highly creative live or improvisation. Your post was good for me because I see that there are more people who need a different approach to their creativity. Thanks ✨👍🏼🎵🎶🎵💜
Thank you! To answer your question, I’d say that AUM is a mixer (like Audiobus) and it’s had a bunch of features added over the years but it’s not a DAW. A DAW is something designed to record, edit and arrange Audio (like Auria, Cubasis, Multitrack DAW etc).
So I have all these but Cubasis doesn’t get opened since they did update and expected me to pay full price after I just bought it not long before. I’m happy in Nano studio but wished it had audio tracks. Gadget is ok and flows well. My new go to is Zenbeats. Rolands new update has really added a lot with the new synth and since I have a mc707 (I love this thing! It would be my stranded on an island synth) it connects and sends audio/midi over usb! This allows me to add any AU to my 707! You should check it out! The original app b4 Roland bought it was cool but buggy and synths sucked but rolands really putting work into this since their using it as a selling point on their 3-4k fantom synth! The best part is the new ZC1 synth has the zen core engine! I’m not sure it runs as well as the vst or hardware but I believe you can share patches between them all!
I’m using iVoxel by VirSyn. It’s IAA only though. It’s the same vocoder app that I’m using for this track too: th-cam.com/video/K4Xmwyhd31g/w-d-xo.html
Awesome as always! I have Cubasis 2 , Gadget 2 ,FL Studio and access to Garage Band ect ... Atm Ive only installed the first 2 mentioned because im concerned about memory and lag from lack of . Im using ipad 32gb 6 gen . Should i worry about that ? How do you manage your data ? Also do you use autotune ? Thank you and much respect.
Just a quick side note: Gadget does support audio tracks in a sense. There’s an audio Gadget. Zurich. If you mentioned that my apologies. I was working while listening and I may have missed that. I’ll try to watch later.
How do you connect audio out on the iPad to your mixer ? - have you ever come across a wireless (BT or Wi-Fi) audio interface ? - thanks for posting the vi
I wish there was an iOS version of Ableton. I don’t get along with purely linear DAWs. Beatmaker is the closest to that workflow, but it’s far too unstable 🙄 Keeps crashing and then I have to redo everything from the last save point. With the last track I made in Beatmaker I had 3 crashes in an hour and got fed up, so I exported what I had done so far and finished it in Ableton. Infuriating! AUM is cool, but like you said elsewhere, it’s not a proper DAW, so complex arrangements get difficult too.
I own Cubasis 2 & 3. I also own Cubase Pro 7 - 10.5. BUT if they do not add Ableton Link, I am done with them. I believe if they added Link support they would see a huge boost in sales. I’d even be willing to pay an additional $100 for that important feature.
Jacob what are you talking about? OFC NANOSTUDIO2 support AUV3 just fine! Unfortunately the talent of the Dev to make concepts clear and easy to use through his UX/UI design didn’t translate to how an AUV3 should be loaded - look a video up or something but I guarantee you, you will be able to use AUV3s just fine in all of their forms. I haven’t used it in a while but the only issue I had when I did was that midi AUV3 would get cast to the track’s channel. Maybe not a big deal for you, for me it was because of my MPE stuff. Nanostudio2 is FANTASTIC. Hell, I’d still use the first one if it hadn’t been abandoned in fortune of its next of kin. UPDATE: oh, should have read the pinned comment first lol.
Very informative and explained easily to understand. I think GarageBand is on the list for me as well. Slightly disappointed with Cubasis guys in not asking for a slightly cheaper upgrade price for v3 from v2.
Hi, Jakob! I’m planning to get the Korg Nano Kontrol Studio. I know that, for obvious reasons, the integration with Korg Gadget 2 is great, but what about others DAWs? I guess you can midi map almost anything on BM3...but does it work with Cubasis 2 or Nanostudio? I really need that jog wheel! Thanks!
The nano-series controllers can send out regular MIDI CC# and/or MIDI Note data, so these controllers can be mapped to any app that reads those types of data. . The biggest issue is that a lot of DAW-type apps do not have proper support for mapping mixer and/or transport controls. It’s no fault of most MIDI controller, it’s something that has to be implemented on the app-side. . And also, I haven’t come across a DAW that supports project-window-scrolling, which is most commonly mapped to the jog-wheel. So even though the Jog-wheel puts out regular CC# data (which could be mapped to anything) there’s no such function to map it too. There might be a DAW out there that I haven’t tried yet that supports it, but I just don’t know.
You know Jakob, as I have dove more and more into music making on the iPad. I am starting to get the itch for physical hardware that I never thought I would have. As I am not too concerned about being mobile, filling a room with hardware would be awesome. Being mobile is great and knowing all the tools on iOS helps get things done fast. I do long for some sort of hardware sampler/sequencer and some physical synths. Maybe by the time I am in my 40's I will have a few. BM3 is great and I can see how it could make someone want a piece of hardware. I think part of the reason is there is not a dedicated controller that can take complete control of any app. Think of how integrated the Ableton Push 2 controller is with Ableton. If something like that existed for iOS in the form of a physical controller design to work seamlessly with a certain app, that would be amazing.
Yeah I totally agree with you Mitch. I don’t know how many times I’ve struggled with setting up my controllers with various apps and production apps ... it’s frustrating. I’ve even looked into doing another one of those big DIY MIDI controllers again, though, I’m a bit weary seeing how it went last time.
I use all of these and a few of others besides. I cannot justify it. Pointing out the storage space, money, and discontinuity issues with my way of doing things makes no impression on me. I'm happy to call it an illness, but it is not that so much as an appreciation of difference, of alternate takes on the creative process. Each brings something personally worthwhile or it sinks into disuse and sometimes gets unloaded. I can say my view of the strengths of these apps overlaps with yours (though maybe we differ on connection and format options in NS . . .), even if my associations of the apps with given musical styles branch off. You highlight some of the things I would about why these apps deserve attention. I should mention that I am annoyed about Steinberg's Cubasis 3 release and their choice to blame Apple for declining to offer even minimally discounted upgrade pricing to existing users. That and the widely discussed plague of bugs that infested the new app (QA? - that's what paying customers are for, silly human). Also, BM has been in a reduced rotation here because of its old file-management issues. The whole Apple mobile platform sucks for file management, yet somehow BM is worse still, with duplication and eventual confusion baked into way BM saves and groups things. Whenever I think of going into BM, all I have to do to dissuade myself is to remember saving or reusing projects or parts of projects in the app. That will usually put me off my pad for at least an hour. Probably it is just me. Usually it is just me, whatever the subject. That's okay. Thanks for all this stuff, Jakob.
NS2, if they had the audio track support. Their website says it is in their priority list for long time. Anyone knows if they are really working on that?
Yes you can, but it’s an extra purchase one has to make and it is not included in the base app. Also, the editing tools are extremely limited compared to audio editing tools in a conventional daw, which is why I prefer doing audio work with Cubasis.
@@JakobHaq that’s odd. Zurich appears to be part of the base app for me. I haven’t used it yet, so I am sure a cheapskate like me would not have bought it. (I am basically using Gadget as a live tool, sort of mini MainStage, so recording real sound has not been a need).
Great video about how you use these DAWs. I own them all and more but end up in AUM because I have an irrational dislike of music apps that remind me too much of a spreadsheet. I probably enjoy creating musical Rube Goldberg machines with the apps I have. Not so interested in producing finished pieces like yourself and many other people.
That clip is from this video th-cam.com/video/K4Xmwyhd31g/w-d-xo.html I had to check because I couldn’t remember which app I used but at 2:45 in that video I show it. I’m actually using Harmony Voice by VirSyn. It’s a Harmoniser. 👍🏼
Great video. The song @1:47 sounds great. The thing is: I don't have an iPad, just an iPhone. What is you opinion on this? Which app is best for the small screen? I think Korg Gadget is awesome in a lot of ways but the controls are strangely unresponsive on my phone. I'm not good musician so I have to rely on tweaking the midi notes and that can get frustrating if I want to make something more complex + the timeline approach keeps throwing me into basic loops. I have to fight the interface to get something more evolving. Also, should I invest my time in garageband? Why aren't you using it at all? What are its limitations?
Thanks for the vid. Just a little request for the future videos, these red commercial break images don't make any sense in premium accounts where you don't see any ads, could you avoid them in the videos?
Yeah I’ve actually considered removing them because I keep getting reports from viewers that they’re either not getting adds (and so they’re wondering about that screen) or they get adds that aren’t lining up with my screens, when viewing on mobile. So I might as well just not do them at all.
I choose the DAW (or lack thereof) based on the workflow of the project. Basically, DAW is the last thing I consider. I start with the idea, the sounds, the textures, etc, and use the DAW that gets in the way the least.
I’ll add (because Jakob hearted my comment) that my goal is to work in iPadOS for ease of sound creation and some editing that digital just makes easier, but (once it’s cleaned up and repaired) bounce everything down to a tascam tape portastudio. More and more I realize I’m an instrument kinda guy, not a computer kinda guy. The iPad so far (as much as I fucking hate Apple as a company and loathe giving them any money) is the device that does the most computing while also getting in my way the least. With some of the iOS-only things out there (like Switcher Studio- expensive but pretty dope) I’m even considering putting an Apple device in my pocket again so I can more easily collaborate with the music people I know who are all primarily in the Apple ecosystem. With Covid destroying many of their livelihoods, a helper with a subscription to Switcher and a room full of iOS devices can become an incredible production.
Glad to know Nanostudio has support for AUv3. Does that include the multi i/o part? Also if it still doesn’t support audio tracks how did you get your voice in there? Sample?
Yeah I messed that one up. But I guess it says something about how god Slate and Obsidian really are. I’ve never even considered trying to bring other instruments into NS2. 😅 . No there’s no multi AUv3 support. I mean it can load the “EG Pulse multi out” version but there is no way to route Channels. You don’t have access to them. The audio is going to go out on the main channel basically. . I sampled my voice into the slate Drum-sampler instrument. 👍🏼
The lack of time signature/tempo change in Cubasis I found limiting, the lack of audio in NS2 is frustrating, the gadgets in Korg Gadget are stripped down versions of the synths models that I bought I can't get the same patches in Gadget that are in the stand alone version this was very disappointing to discover afterwards. I have the same feeling towards beatmaker as you did about the hardware, I don't get the workflow and it is not musical to me. I also got Auria Pro which has audio tracks, and tempo/time signature change but the sequencing is clunky
I can totally see Cubasis (or even Auria) as a final destination for every project, and often the main program. But one thing that really slows me down inspirationally is the whole timeline linear project mode. I grew up musically with it from the beginning. But do you ever create all of your loops in say AUM, and the export to Cubasis for final sequencing? I’m really liking how many ways there are to approach music making on iOS/iPad OS that are not available on the desktop. I’m even of the opinion now that if someone is a producer and they are not using an iPad, I’m not sure I’d want to work with them. For mixing and mastering i get using the standard multitrack timeline structure, but for creation to only use that seems extremely limited at this point. Back to AUM. With AUv3 multi-routing and live mutating sequencing and control, it’s blowing up my head. Inspiration just pours out and out, and I don’t feel like I have to plan the movement in a timeline and be dragged down by all the structure. Again, I don’t think I can use it to finish a project, but for actual experimentation and sound creation, something like Cubasis feels like a brick wall in comparison! I know it’s not technically a “DAW” in the traditional sense, but I’d kinda hate for people to get in the trap of thinking to be “pro”, a DAW is the real thing and AUM isn’t. Also, I do really hope Auria gets a real iPad OS update with all the new bells and whistles. It still feels the most like Logic and Pro Tools. If Rim can get this majorly updated I could see it even possibly overtaking Cubasis as the DAW of choice for many. And that’s good. I don’t like the idea that there’s only 1 real full featured DAW. People get lazy then. Thanks Jakob! Always good to hear your perspective!
I also grew up with timeline editing windows and for me it’s hard to finish any; projects without it. I think I’m just very used to using them. It’s like second nature. But that doesn’t mean that I limit myself to those types of apps. . I do mostly use AUM as a live performance tool. But I also use it for experimentation. I’ve many times ended up with creative experimental sessions where I’ve recorded loops for use in Cubasis. I need those types of sessions too. Sessions where unexpected stuff happens. 👊🏼😉
@@JakobHaq Sounds right! Other than live i can't see how i'd finish something without a timeline. But for developing the parts i'm really liking how open and flexible AUM is. Multi-route plugins are really changing this game as well! It's become a lot more fun again!
🤯 WRONG! NanoStudio 2 CAN LOAD AUv3s. Somehow my brain has blocked that out. I made a whole video about it >>> th-cam.com/video/zjUKK_lv5bk/w-d-xo.html - 🤦♂️ Assumptions is the mother of all f*ck ups!
I was about to comment on that 👍
S A N T A N U 👊🏼😅 I hate it when I make mistakes like this.
I was actually surprised, I never expected you will say that wrong, I thought they stopped auv3 support. So I went to check in my ipad if auv3 support is still there in NS2 😅
it's a shame, Jakob, it's a shame )))
Well I guess that says something about how much I like the Slate and Obsidian. I like em so much I never look for anything else to add. 😂😊
Other apps must be good or very good, and I'm not talking about BeatMaker or NanoStudio but about Auria Pro or IK's, but I consider them too expensive to NOT BE Cubasis 😆😆
However it is also true that Korg Gadget Pro with all its IAPs is the most expensive of all, but I already said it: I love the Korg Gadget Pro, and I love the Korg Module Pro, and the Korg M1, all my midi controllers are Korg, my arranger is a Korg, even my metronome and tuner are Korg!!Anyway...Great job!!
Aaaaw, thank you for telling. That makes me all warm and fuzzy inside. 🥰🥰
KORG gadget is the one I use. I even have it for the Nintendo Switch
Same here
Great video!
Jakob you got the best ios music videos. These videos are gonna blow up one day. You're ahead of the wave
Great video Jacob, funny I use they same four. They are all great in there own way.Cubasis is my go to convention DAW.I did not upgrade to 3 yet.
Loves it.
Aw, thank you so much! 🙏🏼
The first two songs sounded great. I loved the dreamy sound. Great video 👍👍
Stepping back from your sound system and putting the Mellow album on, love that thing. Stay well!
I find it that different apps/tools inspire me in different ways. Sometimes there is more than one option that is the right one for you. Also, It might not be affordable to use several DAW's if you primarily work using PC or Mac, but it is definitely affordable to do so if you are using iOS apps!
love that drum n bass live jam clip, i need to watch that after this
I‘m having huge problems with Cubasis 3.
If it had MIDI FX it would be a significant upgrade.
Yes. And Roland is providing the Unlocked version of Zenbeats for free!
Link: th-cam.com/video/xPE7bUk5WRw/w-d-xo.html
I’ll make sure to check your your music too. 😊
@@JakobHaq I will watch it now!!
Playing with a whole bunch of AUv3 plugins is so rewarding and inspiring and fun and easy…
My actual vote would be: none of these.
Very helpful to a new starter to iOS apps. Thanks!
As a beginner what is it you wish you did better on iOS?
I have an use all 4 of these too! Well not so much cubasis. Great video!
Thanks for the vid brother
PS - I love how you say Jakob!
So did you end up buying it? Are you happy with what you make or are you facing issues?
Paul Prayton I did. It’s solid. I still use NS2 more but cubasis is very solid and reliable, I recommend it
@@obowurx6625 I'm going to check it out, thanks for the tip ;)
Paul Prayton yeah buddy, you’ll dig it
BeatMaker 3 is my weapon of choice (coming from almost 15 years of MPC use). Its been a bit unstable for me lately though 😒 .
I think i wanna try the Cubasis 3 and BeatMaker 3 combo, to see how my work flow could change. Great video!
Pablo Station , understandable , its a very powerful tool.
Is this due to a slower /older iPad or is the app the issue? Just curious. Tryna decide on wether or. Or to get rid of my mpc live for an iPad as one still needs a computer to make a complete beat to upload somewhere.
Bought your ambient album recently, and I really loved it man.
Aw, thank you so much!
I do use Korg Gadget in AUM-piece of cake!
That synth in Nanostudio looks and sounds amazing, if they release it as an AUv3 I’ll buy it on that day (so please hahahaha 🙂 Quite the same feelings with Gadget, I’d need some of their gadgets badly
as au plugins but I don’t like the fact they are that closed.
I was wrong about Nanostudio. Check the pinned comment.
I use a few different iOS DAWs as well, fully agree that having the flexibility is worth paying for a few different ones. I bounce between Gadget and BM3 mostly.
And are you satisfied with what you make or are there things getting in the way sometimes?
I often end up finishing my songs in ableton with extra layers so I would say I’m not completely satisfied with just iPad apps at this point
@@DylanParisMusic Yeah I find myself doing that too. For you is it because of the instruments or effects?
Definitely a mix of both, there are a lot of good synths on iPad but with the V Collection from Arturia and the Komplete 12 collection from Native Instruments I find a lot of higher quality synth sounds in my Ableton instance. I also really like Valhalla Verb and Serum FX, plus I mix and master with Izotope plugins.
@@DylanParisMusic Yeah, I hope Native instruments and other plugin dev end up bringing their libraries to iOS, that would be awesome
You just sold me on nanostudio, tell Kai it’s all good now.
Thank you, and Kai, nice platform.
Kai Aras is actually the developer of Shockwave and VOLT synth. He is one of the devs I talk to a lot. Matt Borstel ( 3:00 ) is the developer of NanoStudio 2. 👍🏼 I should probably have written that out under Kais name instead of just app developer.
@@JakobHaq haha - my bad, I knew that too. 😬
.
I have the original set. Korg EA-1, ER-1, and original Kaoss Pad. Been thinking about selling the set with cables on Reverb.
hallo jacob, what Audio Interface are you using?
Right now I’ve gone back to using my Novation AudioHUB 2x4 (they don’t sell them anymore though). I like it because I don’t have to add an extra powered hub to my setup since the AudioHUB has one built into it. This allows me to power both my nanoKEY and nanoKONTROL midi controllers.
Nice D&B on the Korg!
Insightful video. Lots of useful advice. Thanks!
Thanks for this very, very transparant edition Jakob, we loved every minute! Thanks for showing the old machines, as we are from the Atari1040 generation 😉

Hey Atari 520ST man here! Built in MIDI and a sampling cartridge got me into music way back when ...
Can you export midi from Korg gadget to another DAW? Ie use Gadget just for its instruments etc?
Yes, KORG Gadget can export MIDI, but you have to use Dropbox for that. Seems like the Itunes share is a bit buggy.
@@JakobHaq great fanks !
Jakob Haq Great thanks, at risk of showing my naivety, when exporting midi from Gadget into a new DAW, do you retain the original sound of the gadget, or does the sound change to an instrument in the new DAW?
What is that lovely vocoder you used at the beginning (around 2m from the beginning) ? Is it an iOS app?
it’s iVoxel by VirSyn. I use it for all my vocoder tracks since 5 years back. It’s an older app and it only supports IAA but it’s good!
@@JakobHaq wher can I listen to that song?
I love BeatMaker 3 but not being able to use my Bluetooth headphones kills it for me :(
Did you try Roland ZenBeats?
Woow that Song 2:15 …sooo coool can you upload it anywhere pls?
Hi!
Thank you! - Yes I’ve already pinned a comment with a correction about the AUv3 support for NS2. 👍🏼
My number one guy when it comes to any ios production app this man needs a show Peace J Haq 2020
OMG that song at 1:50! Where can I hear more?
I also wanna hear this
So I have all these but Cubasis doesn’t get opened since they did update and expected me to pay full price after I just bought it not long before.
Thanks JaKob for this again great review!
How do you come with this amazing vocoder @ 1:50?!
It’s shown in the feature splash and I do a zoom here: 13:10. Its also mentioned later in the BM3 section
Hey HAQ, i am pretty sure you can load au3 plugins in NS2
Yup, big brain fart on my part. I’ve added a sticky comment with a correction in it. 🤦♂️
I want the song at 1:50! Is it available anywhere? Please answer, this is sooo good.
What about Andriod apps?
Yes thanks and I recommend TeaTube app free on App Store.
Do you have a course on iOS music production? Thanks.
Thanks for the informative vids 🙏 what’s the visualizer app that you’ve got open on the other ipad?
I get asked a lot so I made this th-cam.com/video/RI7uvJs8slc/w-d-xo.html
There might be a DAW out there that I haven’t tried yet that supports it, but I just don’t know.
enjoying your prospective
Feature matrix is much appreciated
S A N T A N U Legend has it. Apparently he doesn’t like putting stuff out unless it’s PERFECT (listening Steinberg?)
Always loved Gadget, horrible for working with audio though.
Yeah, it leaves a lot to be desired ... Zürich I mean. But everything else it does is awesome!
I thought you can record vocals with Korg Zurich.
Yes you can, but it’s an extra purchase one has to make and it is not included in the base app. Also, the editing tools are extremely limited compared to audio editing tools in a conventional daw, which is why I prefer doing audio work with Cubasis.
@@JakobHaq
Thanks
@@JakobHaq that’s odd. Zurich appears to be part of the base app for me. I haven’t used it yet, so I am sure a cheapskate like me would not have bought it. (I am basically using Gadget as a live tool, sort of mini MainStage, so recording real sound has not been a need).
Great video about how you use these DAWs. I own them all and more but end up in AUM because I have an irrational dislike of music apps that remind me too much of a spreadsheet. I probably enjoy creating musical Rube Goldberg machines with the apps I have. Not so interested in producing finished pieces like yourself and many other people.
what voccoder did you use in the black holes song.???..so clean was it a hardware voccoder? or software
That clip is from this video th-cam.com/video/K4Xmwyhd31g/w-d-xo.html
I had to check because I couldn’t remember which app I used but at 2:45 in that video I show it.
Hey Jakop 👋
What you think about the App Suggester on BM3 and how you trigger the midi files? Thank you 🙏
Where can I find “Step Back This My Sound System” !?!? 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
It’s only available here on TH-cam. That clip came from this video: th-cam.com/video/VwOqRdJIVRY/w-d-xo.html
Thanks! That’s my favorite tune right now!
I’ll also add that when I say Jakob, I say it correctly (“Yah” vs “Jay”). 🥰
💋
We might not like Apple ... but Apple sure loves our money! 😂 th-cam.com/video/1Sg-GUetIns/w-d-xo.html
Jakob Haq the money is secondary, they just love making CLAGNUTS
Glad to know Nanostudio has support for AUv3. Does that include the multi i/o part? Also if it still doesn’t support audio tracks how did you get your voice in there? Sample?
Yeah I messed that one up. But I guess it says something about how god Slate and Obsidian really are. I’ve never even considered trying to bring other instruments into NS2. 😅
.
I just applied for a refund on BM3....tried to load a synth and it just crashed. Dont have the time for a DAW that unstable.
Great video.
Why not FL Mobile ???
Thanks so much for the shout-out brusch!! But I’m so amateurish compared to you it’s not even funny. 😜😜😜
Jesper Jones Seriously man, y music is amazingly good! 💚💛❤️
Yeah Jesper Jones - you make great music - kinda like a cross between future bass and funk - unique. I checked you out because of this video.
