I used to work for Mr. Claudio, I was 16… I’m 20 now. I would go and help him work on other cars he was restoring at his shop in Santa Ana, like his Alfa Romeo and a Mitsubishi that I scraped bad😅not only help him with his cars but also his everyday tasks, he was old and tired so I’m glad he’s resting now. 4 years later and I still remember the first $500 he gave me, after that I knew I wanted to make an honest living forever. This video of his shop is bringing back so many memories. Grumpy old man… Rest in Peace❤🖤

I remember the spread in one of the car magazines in the late 80s about the Cizeta. The plug-line at the time was that Zampolli was the "mechanic of the stars" because he worked on a lot of celebrity Italian cars. A related story goes that Zampolli was the reason singer Sammy Hagar eventually joined Van Halen. They both had Zampolli as a mechanic. Sammy for his Ferrari and Edward Van Halen for his Miura. Zampolli heard that Edward was fishing around for a new replacement singer and suggested that Edward and Sammy meet since they were both in the music business and had a love for exotic cars. They did and the rest is history. Both Sammy and Edward told this story so it's true. Pretty cool rock and roll history tied to Zampolli.
@@williambremner9022 He preferred the name Edward. He didn't mind "Eddie" but if you listen to interviews of people who were close to him, they either called him Ed or Edward. Eddie was a fan nickname that he put up with.
I met Mr. Zampoli with this very car around 2007 at Car's & Coffee" in Irvine CA. I was parked next to him in my wee Ariel Atom. We chatted at some length about his efforts to get the car legal in the US and I got the grand tour of the car and his design ideas. I had never heard of him at that time but remember him well as he was so enthusiastic and of course the specs and size of this car was off the charts. I also watched another of your episodes with the Urraco that brought back memories of me as an 8 year old (50 years ago) walking to school back in Scotland. There was a Urraco parked in a garden and the story was the son of the homeowner was killed in some accident. I watched that Urraco every day for years slowly deteriorate on my way to and from school, my nose pressed between the fence slats trying to see it closer. I used to dream about buying it and fixing it. Then one day it was gone. I've never forgot that car! Thanks for the memories:) and a Great video!
Hi Lain, I have built and presented the car with Claudio from the beginning, and I wish to thank you for this video, which is probably the best I have seen in a while, talking about true things and not one of the many fakes that I have seen around during the years. Thanks again, and a big hug to Elizabeth and Xenia, that I am missing a lot.
Mr. Tyrell, hi from Greece.Because of my age (53 yo) this supercar in 80s-90s magazines, was a dream for any young man who likes the strange ideas of technical pioneers. What a suprising and historical video, thank you very much, many thanks to Zampolli family who share this moments!
As far as I understand it, the Cizeta was actually very close to the original design for the Diablo back in 1985. Gandini had done the original design, but new Chrysler management decided it was too “Wild” and “80’s” to appeal to the masses, so Project 132 (Diablo pre-production nomenclature) was smoothed out and cleaned up into what we saw in 1990. The Cizeta ended up being Gandini’s original take on what the Diablo should have looked like had his design processes been completed at Lamborghini (he left in a fit after his original designs were smoothed out). The Cizeta is very cool and the story behind it is even cooler! Thanks for sharing with us this wonderful video!
Wow, you’ve really surpassed yourself with this one. I mean, the Cizeta V16 is almost mythical. I had no idea they built more than a couple and you are walking around four or five of them in different states after all these years! I really hope you get to complete one so we can all hear it running on your test route 👍😊
Years ago I met Zampoli and have seen this specific car on a few occasions--he would show it at the Beverly Hills Concourse and I think it was on display at the Petersen Automotive Museum as well. As one could imagine, it has undeniable presence.
... a true joy it was to watch this one. I must say, it was a pleasure to make your acquaintance when you were in California, Iain. I hope you enjoyed the Vietnamese food lunch (and the extra salad dressing.) It was an honor to hear Bob tell the first-hand story of Claudio, the black Ferrari, California Highway Patrol, and Sammy Hagar. A moment I will never forget!
Thanks Iain and huge thanks to Zampolli family for letting you in to film this amazing car. Really hope someone takes this on and continues to get more four remaining cars built. 👏🏻👏🏻

Very interesting indeed. Thank you so much for filling in a few more blanks in my automotive history memory. I completely forgot about the audio/video issues you prefaced - I was captivated by the sheer genius of Claudio Zampolli and the quality of engineering that went into the V16. I do not envy you trying to come up with a viable plan for this project, but whoever puts their hand in their pocket will likely be someone who loves beautiful cars more than profit.
This is incredible! It'll probably never happen, but I'd love to see and hear a Cizeta in person one day. Been fascinated by these cars ever since I read about them in books and magazines as a kid.
Dear Iain we owe you a great many thanks for the privilege to watch this video and admire this magnificent masterpiece of automotive Italian engineering. Oh dear God, what a brilliant idea of combining 2 90 degrees v8s and driving the motion of the engine in the middle of the engine! Now days modern technology may be in the 21rst electronic & computerized century era, but I think that brilliant engineers like Claudio or designers like Marcelo so passionate with their "art" seem to extinct in our times. The only thing that this video's lacking is the music soundtrack of cams and valves that this magnificent engine sings. Think that it would sound like an Italian automotive opera. Once again many many thanks. Consider myself blessed to watch you!
I saw the white Cizeta at Canepa Design a few years ago and was shocked that I would ever see one in my entire life. I was as amazed at the width of its haunches as you were. It sure was fun seeing you learn about this car and its crazy engine.

I remember reading about this car in Car and Driver or Motortrend back in the 80's. I never realized that Giorgio Moroder was affiliated with this car. You learn something new every day from Iain's channel!
Oh man. I was hit by the big O word. The Cizeta was one of the biggest day dreams I had as a teenager and the V16 really intrigued me along with the stunning design of Mr. Gandini.

I do hope for the family and all dedicated people involved that it can be found! The uniqueness and stunning concept by Claudio deserves it! Best of luck to everyone involved.
What a fabulous story! I remember these cars when I was a lad, I had a calendar of exotic cars and this was one of the months! I really hope someone with the resources can breathe life into these uniquely engineered beasts once again! And with the wonders of modern engine management, they could be even more ferocious!
Thank you, Iain, this is really a rare gem. CZ was a crazy but possible idea,in an age that saw many new supercars, such as Lamborghini Diablo,Ferrari F40,Bugatti EB110,Porsche 959 and Jaguar XJ 220. Two other cars went near production but in the end they were aborted: the Iso Grifo 90,and the Maserati Chubasco. That was the beginning of the '90s,with all those massive engines,V8,V12,V16....The fact that these cars are real, and that they made 10 or 15 of them is simply fantastic. A monument of technical genius and craftmanship.
This has to be one of the most spectacular cars, period. 16 cylinders, quad pop-up headlights, celebrity origins... Canepa restored one not too long ago. Great, great car. I hope there will be a few more completed in the future.
I think that unless it was taken on by a large-ish auto manufacturer, the attempt would be very expensive and would pretty quickly drive the average company bankrupt. Sad to say, but history is full of small companies that either failed or were bought by larger conglomerates. Still, nice to dream, right? :)
@@aussiechris5904 certainly, it would be an ‘ominous’ undertaking, BUT unlike a lot of these supercar startups, this has a pretty good head start! That said, I’m no expert, or businessman. I do hope that someone can at least complete the cars there?
Wow :) what an amazing project and it must be quite an honor to be asked to help with this :) I remember in the 80's when it was launched and that Giorgio Moroder was part of it. I hope you will share some more videos with this project.
As a child, I hoarded these with avarice. I would scour car boot sales and second hand shops for them. Car was always the best, I remember that mirror writing, I used to copy it. I remember the Cizeta edition, I think the car was white. I also got Classic & Sportscar and Classic Car.
Yes I had that issue of "Car" magazine, January 1989, and the headline said the Cizeta Moroder V16 should be the new Countach, because that was shortly before the Diablo came out.
I first saw a copy of Car magazine in the late 60s on a news stand; bought it and took out a subscription that night. I have fond memories of reading about British kit cars and other sports cars. Their write up on the 7 liter Iso Griffo really stands out in my memory.
No need to apologise for the audio quality Iain, the content of the video is fascinating. Sincerely one of the most captivating videos I've ever seen on TH-cam. I look forward to hearing where this story goes. And hearing that engine run!
Great video. I had no idea Cizeta was in LA. Perhaps Jay Leno could be of service in nearby Burbank. Truly no shortage of automotive knowledge in the area. Hope these engineering beauties find their way into the world. I Would love to see you take one for a spin. Italian Tune Up? The sounds must be amazing.
Jay Leno's shop is probably one of the few shops that has the resources and expertise to finish peicing these together, and no doubt he knows the story, so wouldn't shock me if he does end up taking this on.
I saw a running one of these on the canepa TH-cam channel. It was a white car l think , and it drove the sound was glorious. Read all about it originally in CAR and they had even interviewed Giorgio Morodor as well . It was an amazing article. Write a book on it please, or I'll help you out write it. Interview the family, 'Bob' yourself and any one that knew the ingenerie Cizeta.
I don’t know why but this reminds me of the CBX Honda 24 v 1000 engines l had in my bike. Breathtaking absolutely Breathtaking that this engine could put out these revs This is a complete You Tube channel on its own, lm sure like myself there must be a multitude of viewers (Petrol heads) that would be overjoyed to follow this fantastic unique project.
More than enjoyed that Iain, that was truly wonderful and quite emotional as well. I really hope everyone gets to see the cars realised. Thank you for sharing this, I was so engrossed any video issues were totally unseen. 👏👏👏

Iain, no need to ever apologize for anything. I thought the video was outstanding! And seeing this car, and the inside information about it, just blew me away. Your enthusiasm for what you saw was so genuine, and so infectious, we can all see you were like a kid on Christmas morning. It came through the screen so well. ☺️☺️ I'm 46, and I vividly remember reading about this car in magazines in the last 80s as a kid (Sports Car Illustrated comes to mind with that Geneva white/red car). I know you'll do everything in your power to help the family out! I can honestly see Jay taking a liking to this project somehow and being a piece of the puzzle to help it continue. I'm sure I'm speaking for everyone, we can't wait to see & hear of any updates you can provide down the road! 👏👏👍👍

No worries over the video and audio, opportunities like this do not come very often.
The focus and sound are fine. As my late father would often say, never apologize, never explain.
Been clock watching for this video- its going to be great.
This has to be one of the most spectacular cars, period. 16 cylinders, quad pop-up headlights, celebrity origins... Canepa restored one not too long ago. Great, great car. I hope there will be a few more completed in the future.
I can’t believe there isn’t someone out there that wouldn’t want to take this on as a going concern, as something they can develop and refine.
@@aussiechris5904 production? this thing wouldn't even pass the current emissions
Perfect IP and brand name for Fiat-Chrysler to scoop up I would think
@@laurap3244 Oh gawd no! Chrysler is like the town's bicycle...
What an emotional film, wonderful, and I hope the dream becomes reality.
Wow :) what an amazing project and it must be quite an honor to be asked to help with this :) I remember in the 80's when it was launched and that Giorgio Moroder was part of it. I hope you will share some more videos with this project.
An engineering marvel you could spend alive time to absorb it
Fascinating video as always. I remember reading about these V16Ts in Car Magazine in 1989/ 1990 and always wondered what became of them.
Do a search on Leno and Zampolli and you'll find the two had a bit of a run-in via the courts. I can't easily see Jay coming to the rescue here.
Jay Leno's shop is probably one of the few shops that has the resources and expertise to finish peicing these together, and no doubt he knows the story, so wouldn't shock me if he does end up taking this on.
@@slasher9883 don't think they have all the pieces so doubt anything will come of it. seems just 1 car
@@slasher9883 I think Jay already has a lifetime of unfinished projects lined up.
@@xqqqme That would be the ultimate irony, don't you think? That's why I wouldn't put it past Leno given his sense of humour.
Totally blown away by the intricacies of the car's engineering which you have so well revealed.
Wow! What an absolute honour to be called to look and get involved with a great man's dream.
My Goodness Iain there must be someone to step in and take this on I'm almost in tears what an amazing man and story and car, I can't think of anyone else better qualified than yourself to help these lovely people God bless you dude and good luck with it 👍🙏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹💪👌👌👌👌😉
Thank you for letting us see this !
I remember reading about this car in my early days. Awesome video 👍🏻
Mahalo for generously sharing this unique car and experience with all of us! I hope you are privileged to enjoy many, many more fascinating journeys. Again, thank you for taking us along!
The two daughters has been up to lots of mischief!!🤗🤗
The Cizeta V16T is THE dreamcar of my childhood, it is beauty, fast, powerful and rare as rare as can be!
Unbelievable, remember seeing this in one of my super car books back in the 90's!
Iain surely this is one for your collection be great to see you work on it!!
Thank you Ian. Any material on Cizeta is highly appreciated. The car was from before internet era so it's very rare to get information on it. And here we are with engine on display, crankshaft and the gear that mates them.
What a privilege to get to see all this. Never thought I'd get to see a Cizeta like this. Thank you Iain, Bob and the Zampolis for making this possible!
I'm 46, and I vividly remember reading about this car in magazines in the last 80s as a kid (Sports Car Illustrated comes to mind with that Geneva white/red car). I know you'll do everything in your power to help the family out! I can honestly see Jay taking a liking to this project somehow and being a piece of the puzzle to help it continue. I'm sure I'm speaking for everyone, we can't wait to see & hear of any updates you can provide down the road! 👏👏👍👍
Nothing wrong with sound or footage!
I sincerely hope someone has the temerity and isn’t daunted by this challenge. Would be awesome to see these running again.
Wow! Never thought I'd see this car again
Following the progress of this project is going to be awesome
So this is what it feels like to go on the coolest car adventure of your life and forget your glasses :) Many thanks for uploading anyway. These cars, the story and even the video are unobtainium!
