My son is a music teacher with trumpet being his main instrument. When he was a senior in high school he played a solo of this song in the half time show. Every time he performed at football games and band competitions, the parents and older members of the crowd would go crazy over the song. I will always hear House of the Rising Sun with a smile.

Some trivia: The bassist, Chas Chandler became a talent scout after his stint with the Animals. He's the guy that rousted up Jimi Hendrix, managed him for the first two albums then went on to manage the band, Slade.

This was recorded in one or two takes, so Hendrix said Chandler thought that was the only way to record, and that multiple takes were a waste of time and money.

Glad you are introducing your wife to some of the greatest classic rock. Eric Burdon & The Animals were part of the British Invasion in the 60's along with the Beatles & others. People were always shocked at the deep voice coming out of the lead singer. They had so many great songs such as "The House of the Rising Sun", "We Gotta Get Out of This Place", "It's My Life", "Don't Bring Me Down", "I'm Crying", "See See Rider", "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood, "San Franciscan Nights", "When I Was Young" & "Sky Pilot".

This song is a centuries old folk song, and as these things do, they change over time. We’ve only had affordable recording in relatively recent times of human history, so many times entertainers in a town or village would move around and introduce songs they’d heard elsewhere and possibly improve or improvise (if their memory of the song was limited) the lyrics or melody.

Great to see your lovely wife joining you in the game! This song never gets old to me. The lead vocalist is the inimitable Eric Burdon. Other Animals songs worth reacting to: "We gotta get out of this place," "Please Dont Let Me Be Misunderstood." I'm not sure that Burdon sings Low Rider with War, but he does sing "Spill the Wine (Dig That Girl" with War which, in spite of the weird title was a big hit around 1970.

"The House of the Rising Sun" was a folk song from the 19th century in the South. It was the name of a brothel, traditionally sung by the female's point of view. The organist, Alan Price, took credit for composing it; since it was in the PD.

In 1969, while living in San Francisco, Burdon joined forces with California funk rock band War. In April 1970, the resulting album was titled Eric Burdon Declares "War" which produced the singles "Spill the Wine" and "Tobacco Road". A two-disc set entitled The Black-Man's Burdon was released in September 1970. The singles from their double album, "Paint It Black" and "They Can't Take Away Our Music", had moderate success during 1971. During this time Burdon collapsed on the stage during a concert, caused by an asthma attack, and War continued the tour without him.

The Byrds, Mr. Tambourine Man, is commonly thought of as the first folk rock song. But this song, a cover of an old folk song, came out in 1964. I think this is the first folk rock song.

    • @ffjsb
      @ffjsb 2 ปีที่แล้ว

This is definitely more of a Blues feel than folk. It may have originated out of a folk song, but it definitely was deeply infused with the Blues.

    • @raenellefisher8514
      @raenellefisher8514 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@ffjsb Yes. I think that's why it has gone unremarked as the first folk-rock. Early on in the 60s, most folk rock had a Greenwich Village vibe. House of the Rising Sun was straight out of New Orleans. It's hard to imagine it wasn't bluesy in its original folk form. I never heard the original folk song. Do you know if it was bluesy, or did the Animals add that? The words certainly sound bluesy.

    • @ffjsb

@@raenellefisher8514 I want to try and find some early recordings of the song if I can just to see how different it is.

"Spill the Wine" is still my favorite War song and the music they made in the immediate aftermath of his departure carried the same vibe they had with him. "Slipping into Darkness" and "Cisco Kid" are great examples.

Another thing I meant to say was the “The House of The Rising Sun was a brothel in New Orleans. It was run by Madame Marianne Le Soleil Levant (which is French for “The Rising Sun”) It opened in 1862 and closed in 1874 due to complaints from neighbours 🤩

This is a very old blues song from the 30's (if I remember right). The song was original sang by a woman from the woman's point of view. The House Of The Rising Sun is strictly a fictional place. The only song Eric Burden sang with the group War was "Spill The Wine".

"Eric Burdon declares War" and "Black Man's Burdon" we're the first two War albums. Burdon was lead singer on both records.

That was fun watching it again this time with your wife included. Every time I see that goofy smile on that guitar player’s face I gotta laugh lol! Such an awesome song and so haunting. I did not know he was in War for a time! Interesting!

Great fun reaction - your a fun couple.. terrific to see. God bless your souls. Keep laughing and smiling...The Animals ...this song...Brillaint and unforgettable..once heard...never never never forgotten. I tell you no lie that i thought i would never hear anybody come near Eric Burdon's voice on this track, but i can assure everyone that there was a chap i heard at a theater in Mold, North Wales in the UK who was every bit as spellbinding as this..in a play this tune being part of a Tribute to 1960s music. The theater erupted when he finished, everybody was in raptures..his name was Alan Howell

So glad to hear that your named doesn't mean "will burn in hell", as was the rumor. Kidding. :)
How fortunate you are to have such a beautiful wife, not that you don't deserve it, because you do. And I think she is a brilliant addition to your show, and know that she will bring in more viewers, which is always a good thing, because you are bringing good music to new ears. And a peaceful, healing heart, which the world sorely needs.
A brilliant recent example of a soul having no color, or maybe all colors, is in the soulful music of Hozier. "Nina Cried Power" and "Take Me to the Church" are both essential. And the videos are all so good, I would watch and hear them all. Y'all will love it, just as this classic, and the songs will become new classics.

When talking about the production value of the video, nobody ever mentions the fact that they wheeled the keyboard from next to the drummer to the front of the stage, seamlessly and without the keyboard player missing a note. Even if the song was pre-recorded, he sure looked like he was playing on the closeups.

This is the studio version overdubbed over an actual TV performance. The performance almost perfectly matched the studio release, with a only a couple of spots differing. ...

@@thatmanstumototours2270 No microphones? No leads on the electric guitars? Moving the organ during the performance? If this was an "actual TV performance," it was still lip-synched to a recording, not performed with live sound, I think.

Song was made in the recording studio in one take between gig to save money.
However this is from a movie film, not TV. made after the record was a big hit.
This clip was filmed in 1964 or 65 as part of a UK colour film called Pop Gear for paying theatre release. This explains the early high quality color images we luckily have for this mimed from the record performance and also a few other top UK only music artists from when the film was made.
TH-cam has quite a few segments from this UK movie Pop Gear with the US contribution being to re title it Go Go Mania and add a few intro Go Go dancer segments to satisfy the US audience.
A TH-cam search for Pop Gear Go Go Mania shows lots of surviving segments :
      th-cam.com/users/results?search_query=pop+gear+go+go+mania
The intro by TCM explains the background of the film. While some of these segments were likely to be shown on US Colour TV much later , the source would originally be this high quality film.
Rising Sun is the standout, but the Honeycombs with Have I the Right is a landmark too,
In 1964 images not recorded on film would be much lower quality videotape, not the notable quality images used here. Especially with the inferior US pioneering NTSC standards often called Never The Same Colour.
So lucky the film was made instead of relying on low standard video tape recordings that were usually taped over anyway to save tape cost money or made by filming a TV screen with poor quality results. I would be amazed to see any video recording from 1964 up to this standard of image quality. A better sound source can easily replace or lesser quality film track early source in TH-cam postings these days.
These films mainly used mimed performances as the vast majority of theatre audiences wanted to hear the music performance as they knew it from the records.
Hope this helps people who have the colorized and vidoetape theories that usually pop up.
