The studio Summertime is so dreamy and beautiful and still a bit edgy with Janis' vocals. Just a great rendition of an old Gershwin song. Porgy & Bess!!

I couldn't tell if you were liking it or not because you kept a straight face throughout - glad you loved it. I grew up in the 60s and 70s and loved Janis Joplin and used to play drums and sing along to her music - along with all of the other great music from that era!
This is the performance that made her a star. The Monterey International Pop Festival 1967. 3 days long. she came in pretty unknown, knocked everyone dead, left a star
and Jimi Hendrix as well....
She had to go on stage twice because the first time the manager didn't allow the camera crew to film her and the band but when she found out they hadn't been filmed she was pretty mad, so the event organisers arranged another slot for the band to play again so that they could be filmed.
That woman in the front row was Mama Cass of the Mamas and the Papas, whose band mate Jon Phillips was a producer of the festival. This concert launched the careers of several artists, including the first performance of The Who in America.
i dont care what your taste in music is. Be it Rock country. Classical etc this trancends musical genres. And you can only watch this girl in stunned amazement
This was actually Big Brother and the Holding Company , the group that Janis Joplin was a member of when first starting out.
I’ve seen this performance several times and it gives me CHILLS! …every single time!
The woman in the audience was Mamma Cass (and she was the lead singer in the Mamma and the Papas). She was the promoter of this festival. She was unknown before this concert. She was 'discovered' and signed to a record deal from her performance at this concert.And btw Janis was 24 years old in that performance.
Saw/heard her live at San Francisco nightclub in the 60’s.

Yeah absolutely a 10 those days are gone but the the great music won't go away easily. From the late 60s to the 1980s writers singers and musicians was free to explore the diversity where the music lead them. The few dollars we spent on vinyl and the concert we went to created the competition's of Excellence. I remember those sweet days but truly a little sad

The lady in the audience going "Wow" is Mama Cass Elliot of the Mamas and the Papas, one of the most admired vocalists of the time -- with a very different style from Janis's.
One of the things I love best in this video is Mama Cass in the audience being blown away by Janis. You can see her mouthing Wow!

This is where she was discovered and offered her record deal she was singing for Big Brother and Holding Company and if you look you will see Mamma Cass great to see you sharing with your wife and it's really good to see young people discovering the music that I grew up listening to

I saw her live in Seattle at Sics stadium. She came out through the back wall to walk towards the stage and she was all leather, boas and feathers AND she stopped to give autographs!

Yeah, and that's Mama Cass saying "Oh my God," when she's done. No one had ever seen anything like her before. Before being 'free' or 'big' was Elvis's hips, or the Beatles hair, or Tom Jones emotion. And then THIS. Most of us today started with wild and worked backwards. But when just before this most people were still going to church and half the population worked on farms, this must have seemed so shocking and so rebel rock and roll. I was too young to realize how significant it was.

Saw her perform on Festival Train show in Toronto when I was 22. There's no one like Janis, not before and not since.

I know what you mean. I'm 76 and was still in the Navy during the summer of love but I heard the music and still feel like it was only a short time ago until I realize it was over 50 years ago!!!
Janis was a kick ass singer, she had that blues rock sound
This song is a cover by early blues great Big Mama Thornton. Janis killed it but Big Mama's original version is not to be ignored either.

No- not simple Blues... this is Blues Rock. This was the genesis of Joe Cocker's, then Robert Plant's, all out style of belting tunes... all three of whom are loved to this day. Peace from Canada.
Her career was only 4 years long & she still the standard that's yet to be matched .
Janis getting a lot of respect from Mama Cass. I was crushed when I heard that she had passed. Not surprised but crushed.
This performance was before she was known. She wasn't even on the advertisement of the festival. Moma Cass from the Moma and the Papas was the organizers of the festival.
This was Big Brother & the Holding Company's second appearance at Monterey. The San Fransisco bands did not give permission to be included in the film but Janis was persuaded overnight to perform again so that it could be captured for posterity.

Janis was a star on the inside too. She got the great Bessie Smith a headstone.
There is audio of her singing a song. And after the song she says ok I’m done my voice is shot. So I would imagine that she did strain singing . One wonders how she would do on a tour singing every night. But without a doubt an unbelievable artist/ showgirlship. Vary much missed
That's raw pain...that's raw talent. She was that kind of performer that goes deep into souls of people.
Just seeing Mama Cass and the look she had on her face says it all.
When she says she doesn't know who Mama Cass is and you get that look like, "Oh, you'll know soon enough."
When Janis Joplin was with Big Brother & The Holding Company,they didn't let her do her thing,but,when she performed "Ball & Chain" the festival at Monterey,prelude to Woodstock,that's when she really got discovered and they snapped right on up to begin her career as soloist and the rest is history. There may be female vocalist who have sweeter tones,hit higher notes and all that,but,none of them can sing a song the way Janis Joplin could. The best part of the video was seeing the look on Mama Cass' face when she watching Janis' performance
Janis by far one of the most amazing singers that there ever was!! So sad she never knew how loved she was by all her fans. Died way to young!! RIP Janis!!
Janis grew up in Port Arthur, Texas, just 20 miles from where Johnny and Edgar Winter grew up, in Beaumont, Texas.
Her voice is a woman's anguish, pain, and from the soul expression of her desire to love and be loved. Pure truth!

I saw that performance at a movie theatre in Sydney Australia back in the day and it made me really want to go to the US. I didn't though, not until many years later.
One of the great moments in rock history. Janis was mostly unknown at the time. She's became a huge star after this.

You guys would love any of her live performances on the Dick Cavett show. Janis loved Cavett and always brought her best. Her 1969 performance of the Bee Gees classic "To Love Somebody" live on the Cavett shows is spectacular.
To think that two of the greatest US musical innovators had the same last name!
The woman in the crowd that was awed, was Cass Elliot. Mama Cass from the Mama’s & Popa’s . When your peers are blown away by what you’re doing, you know you’re on fire.

Janis Live is something else.
Still am blown away by such a young woman's soul. Never will there be another.
I'm 68 years old and never tire of Janis. This performance still raises the hairs on my arms every time.
Thing is, she had a a beautiful natural voice….and as a (very modest) singer it used to kill me to hear the stress she was putting on that voice. Yes, it hurt her voice, and she used to drink allot of Southern Comfort to “coat” her throat…..Had she lived past the age of 27, she would probably have damaged her voice beyond repair. However, she did live long enough for us to have a music catalogue of a woman singing her heart out, coming from her own experience of pain…raw, vulnerable and exposed…….living in the moment and not giving a f**k what she did to her voice. To her, The music was more important. I think that’s one thing that Mama Cass must have been thinking to herself…….knowing the damage that kind of singing would do.

While recording the Pearl album Janis was learning voice control and other techniques from producer Paul Rothschild he floored Janis when he told her she could still sing after 40 she figured she'd just retire and maybe open up a bar or something. Paul was telling her how to sing to preserve the voice and different styles of music she was totally enthusiastic about it and loved working with Rothschild.
Female singers of the day were Judy Collins, Joni Mitchell and other women with pretty voices. This was very different. No one had heard this before. Mama Cass Elliot seemed to like it :)
Janis(RIP) laid her soul bare on the table that day in Monterrey. Aside from the passion that she displays, she controls so well the dynamics of the song. You know you are doing something right, if you wow Mama Cass and provoke that kind of reaction from her.
And a legend was born.

Oh, those pre-Prozac and pre-intensely effective antidepressants days were indeed soul wrenching. Love the off-key sections, when her voice makes you cringe... because this isn't about being "pretty" and "photo-ready". This is about visceral, primal, animal emotions like 1960s America had never seen before... Not to mention she was one of the few female rock'n'rollers out there. Shout out to Big Mama Thornton, one of JJ idols and author of the song. I love Big Mama's version, at times, more than Janis's.
If you want to hear some Absolutely Stunning female vocals you should listen to Clare Torry singing Pink Floyd's Great Gig in the Sky, it will knock your socks off and she doesn't sing a single word...

The lady in audience was Cass Elliott. A star with the Mamas and the Papa’s. Someone asked Janis about her singing style. She responded that you had to feel it. That best describes this remarkable young artist who died too soon in life. Think of all the music left unsung!!
