    I was there in 1977 at the Oakland Coliseum. Those all day concerts were called Day on the Green. We heard three bands in a day. I was 17 years old now 62. Many of those people in that crowd are grandparents now. I may be old but I saw a lot of great bands. Those were good times.

      I met Billy a few times. He was a nice humble man. They use to jam at a place called Ward's Landing on Sundays and people would bring their instruments and jam. This was in the early 90's. Billy and Artimus Pyle were always there.

      I've been wondering if they played it longer in this performance and if it was edited down. Because the ending sounded abrupt, specifically at the end of that long solo, where the camera cuts back to the band and they start ending the song.

    It's even more amazing to watch the crowd reaction realizing they weren't even headlining the show. Peter Frampton headlined ( imagine having to follow this). The Outlaws opened followed by Santana, then Skynyrd.

  • @artbagley1406
    @artbagley1406 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    Wasn't that a nice, gentle, lilting, calming, lyrical introduction? And how badly did you get tossed about in the roller coaster cart in the second half of the song? I've watched over 100 reaction vids here on YT and this song DOES NOT GET OLD! It's the energy of the crowd, the virtuosity of the band members, and the awe-struck faces of the reactors that are so entertaining, reminding me of the first time saw this video. Wonderful reaction, folks! This was 3 months before the airplane crash (Oct. 20, 1977). We're so fortunate to have this documented performance for our enjoyment. Lynyrd Skynyrd was a re-spelling of some of the band members' high school mechanical arts or phys ed teacher's name -- Leonard Skinner.

    This was BEFORE the plane crash as the lead singer Ronnie Van Zandt died and so did one of their lead guitarists-- Steve Gaines, also died. They named the band after one of their high school teachers, Leonard Skinner, who used to give them grief about their long hair.

  • @bostonvair
    @bostonvair 2 ปีที่แล้ว +42

    This concert was in July of 1977. The plane crash was in October, 1977. So this must have been among their last concerts with the original lineup. I saw them live around 1988 in Worcester, Massachusetts and Ronnie Van Zant's kid brother Johnny was on lead vocals. Freebird was done as an encore and it was done with no vocals in deference to the late singer Ronnie. A little trivia for you, middle brother Donnie Van Zant was founder and lead vocalist of southern rock band 38 Special.

      Best check your facts ,this wasn't the ORIGINAL lineup . Donnie VanZant was a founding member of 38 Special but he played rhythm guitar and sang backup ! And by the way the best concert video of this is Knebworth in 1976 they go right out on the Rolling Stones tongue and show the world AND THE ROLLING STONES who THE BIG DOGS are that's right LYNYRD SKYNYRD !!! Last thing the best live recording of any Skynyrd song including Freebird is the Live One More From The Road album listen to it from the beginning straight through to the very end and in that moment you will be the happiest person on earth money back guarantee promise 🤣✌️

    The band's name came from a teacher at the school several members attended, Leonard Skinner.
    In-ear monitors came into use in the late 80s, but only became more affordable in the last 15 or so years. They have advantages as well as disadvantages, depending on venue and volume. Some prefer to rely on on-stage monitoring when possible.

    Super! First, I was still in High School when this performance was made. Yes, I am 63 and a child of the 70's ! Best music ever. What I really like about y'all (from Texas) is that you reacted with each other without always stopping the video. I Love to see young people like y'all enjoy the music that me and my friends loved. Music was a huge part of our lives. ****Your question concerning the plane crash: it was After this performance. 4 died that day. They were the lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, the guitarist with the shorter blonde hair, his wife, and a young man who was a part of the crew. Ronnie's brother took over as singer. Very sad. Thank you for treating one of my favorite songs so well. I am now subscribed and will pass this on. Your wife is so pretty and sweet. Have a great life together!

    I was a drummer in the 80s and I remember how it could be hard to hear each other. I had two big monitors behind me and it had to really concentrate on the band. Little time to relax and enjoy playing - especially at these larger venues. I'd have given anything for an ear piece!!! This concert shows how exciting they were in the 1970s. I'll bet there are grandkids today whos gramma and grandpa made mom or dad after this show! Lol 🤣

    I did concert security for Bill Graham, the BIGGEST/MOST LEGENDARY concert promoter in the world from 1987-1993.
    Though this concert was 10 years before I started working for Bill, I had worked other HUGE concerts at this location such as Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, U2, Metallica with Guns & Roses to name a few. It always amazed the large amounts of people in one place and that if you were in a helicopter looking down on the crowd, it would look fluid.
    RIP to all the original band members here, they're all playing that GREAT GIG IN THE SKY. (That's the name of a Pink Floyd tune)
    Also to mention regarding HEARING yourself onstage with all the shouting crowd, check out the Beatles live at Shea Stadium. They couldn't hear themselves over the screaming girls and the sound systems then were not anywhere as advanced as they are now.

    Oh, Dee.
    Girl, back in the day we didn't know about sun block or SPF. We freaking put olive oil or baby oil on our bodies and lemon juice in our hair to lay out in the sun all day.

      I was just going to say that back then we had suntan oil & lotion or used baby oil. There wasn't any SPF 8, 15, etc. or sunblock. Oh there was the dreadful QT "self tanner" that turned you orange! 🤣

      I never heard of using iodine with the baby oil, until the comments on this thread. What was the iodine for? To stain the skin to look like one got darker faster? Or did it supposedly help against sunburn?

    It was before the crash as the lead singer died in the crash. How many bands have 4 guitars? Not many. The piano really added value to the band. They were just becoming super popular and you can see why.

    How can you be angry or violent with these sounds? With this kind of music in my generation, we were always happy. It's all about the energies.
    We didn't have sunblock back then. Weird, we didn't get skin cancer either.

  • @Drummingvulture

    Man, I saw Skynyrd about two weeks after this show, but it was at the coliseum in Madison, so a much smaller venue. In fact, the satge was on the side, rather than at one end, and there were huge curtains coming off both corners of the stage and extending all the way to the opposite wall, effectively cutting off at least half of the seating. They called this a "theatre presentation". The opening band was Brownsville Station.
    We were less than ten feet away from the band. Ronnie, of course, was barefoot.
    If only we had known what was going to happen in just a few months. A real gut punch.
    If I'm not mistaken, the only ones in this video that're still alive are Artimus Pyle (drums) and Gary Rossington (guitar).

    I live right down the road from where they grew up and where they are buried.
    Now Chod, they wouldn't be playing if it were after the plane crash. 4 were killed including Ronnie Van Zant the lead singer. Naw, the plane crash was that October.
    You know in high school theres always that one teacher that always made your life miserable. Well it was their coach. Always on their ass about the dress code, put in your shirt tails, your hairs too long, your sideburns go beyond your earlobe, etc etc.
    His name was Leonard Skinner so they named their band Lennard Skynard. Kool, huh?
