  • Hello Italophiles and passionate language students. I hope this episode on the confusing but crucial verb 'piacere' will give you more confidence on your path to becoming fluent in Italian. Don't give up - learning Italian can be overwhelming but with daily study, you can grow your vocabulary and grasp of the grammar and if you speak the phrases along with me, hopefully also your pronunciation. You can find many more videos on my channel about how I learned Italian and moved to Italy. Making these episodes alone is very time consuming and expensive and if you would like to support my work, you can find my Patreon page here:

You can find recipes and other information on moving to Italy, learning Italian or my filmmaking equipment on my website:

Please don't follow me on Facebook as that person is not me - they have stolen my identity for the past few years. You can follow me over on Instagram for daily inspiration from Italy and around the world to make you dream, learn a language, cook, travel, move to a foreign country, film, edit or pursue your passion:

Buongiorno! As I always say, I don’t consider myself fluent - I still have much to learn in Italian but so many of you have asked for another language lesson and hopefully there is something useful for you in hearing how I approached this language, as a self-taught English speaker. 😘😘😘🇮🇹

*The verb "pleasure" is an intransitive verb, which can have an impersonal or personal form.*
      *Impersonal form*
What pleases is the subject of the sentence and can be placed at the beginning or end of the sentence.
The person who expresses the preference is the indirect object (or complement of term), introduced by the preposition A "to" (to me, to you, to Mario etc.). "A Mario piace la pizza" Pizza (subject) is pleasing to Mario (indirect object).
The indirect object can be expressed with a name (a Mario piace ...), with a pronoun of strong form (a me piace ...) or with a pronoun of weak form (mi piace ...).
The verb is conjugated to the third person singular (piace) or plural (piacciono): A Mario piace la pizza / A Mario piacciono le pizze.
      *Personal form*
The subject is the person who is liked: me, you, him, her, us, you, them, etc.
The indirect object is the person who expresses the preference: to me, to Mario, to someone, to everyone, etc.
Maria piace a Stefano. Maria (subject) is liked by Stefano (indirect object).
      *Auxiliary form*
In compound times, the verb "pleasure" wants the auxiliary to be. "La pizza mi è piaciuta" Pizza was pleasing to me / "Le pizze mi sono piaciute" Pizzas were pleasing to me.

Kylie Flavell thank you, I’ve found the transcript function on TH-cam to be invaluable for learning a language, definitely a good learning tool for your students, maybe worth including in a vid? You can easily click back and forth to practice pronunciation and put subtitles in English at same time 👍😊it’s awesome 😎

Suffice to say I learn something each time I come to you, AND I am ALWAYS in a better mood (even when I come to you already feeling good!) when I leave to begin my day, I love to learn, and, to learn from someone who's sooooooooo full of life and love as you are, is doubly fantastic. Thank you for such a wonderful service, thank you for that brilliant, brilliant smile and attitude. I just adore everything about you. Your husband is truly, a greatly blessed man in the gift God has given him, in you ! ! ! My life is better because I found your channel. THANK YOU SO MUCH . P.S. I was once in love with an Italian. Me a German woman, he from Lucca. I spoke Spanish with him in the beginning. Because he couldnt´t speak English. I know very well how it is to go around with a dictionary. But like you said, he would have never corrected me. When I had to say something fast; I took a Spanish word and made it sound Italian. I was so in love that I was not aware about it. It was not a good start to learn Italian. To mix Italian and Spanish made it worse. Because they are different languages even thou they have same roots and similar words. But also the mentality is different, I had learned Latin at school which helped me at least with the basics. After we broke up I took Italian lessons. Only then I understood our problems in conversations. Now after 15 yerars I find your sweet videos here. I can see the beauty of Tuscany live and atmosphere again. And I feel in your work that lightens of being., that had touched my soul..The joy in small things. Thank you so much for sharing this adventure and your heart.

Thanks Kylie - that was very helpful to me. I am one of those who would always say "anche io" and now I know better. We have been to Italy every year for about 13 years now (sadly missing this year), and my husband and I have a totally different approach to learning and speaking Italian. He is very dedicated and works on Italian every day, even if it is just reading - he knows a lot of the verb conjugations and correct grammar. On the other hand, the only time I practice is when I am there, but the funny thing is that when in Italy I am the outspoken one and he tends to shrink away from speaking. I think part of this is that I don't know better and am making tons of mistakes, where he is trying to formulate sentences before he speaks, which he can't do quickly enough. I am definitely not saying my way is better because I am pretty sure I speak Italian at about a 3-year-old level ;). but at least, for the most part, I can communicate in a basic way. If we ever moved there I would have to up my game though since I know that I can not express myself well enough to impart more complex ideas. I'm so impressed that you are self-taugh. Brava!

Ciao Kylie, sicuramente usi il congiuntivo ed il condizionale meglio della maggioranza degli italiani della tua età! Sono impressionato da come tu abbia potuto imparare così bene la lingua da autodidatta. Greetings from Darwin, NT. 🇦🇺🇮🇹

In fact "piacere" comes from Latin "placere", same root of "please" and "pleasure" and "plaisir" in French of "placer" in Spanish.
In Italian the "L" had been replaced with "I". 🤷‍♂️ Also in italian dialects and that's even weirder.

Your clips are great... I often observed that good clips on TH-cam have 3% of dislikes but this one has only 1%. For some reason 2/3 of 😡 people like you which is quite an achievement 👍

Italian seems to have many of the root words as Spanish. My Spanish isn’t that great but I do live in Southern California where Spanish is a common. Got job explaining Italian.

Hi Kylie, I'm new to your channel, I like it very much, your videos are beautiful and your content is very fine and interesting. My first language is Spanish but I'm trying to learn Italian, it is challenging to learn Italian from an English speaking person, but it is also a lot of fun! I like your Italian lessons more than other lessons I've seen on TH-cam. I love the Tuscan region of Italy and anything tuscan. I also like to watch your recipes although I'm not cooking them, I am vegan, lol. I'm sure I will enjoy your videos a lot. Thanks! 🌹

Venecia B Sooooo much easier. I am sure you can easily understand ‘piacere’ when you know how to use ‘gustar’!

@@KylieFlavell It's not easy to learn Italian for a person who directly starts studying it. Having a knowledge in Spanish or other Latin languages certainly helps.

Well, in Italian "piacere" is used in the exact same way as "gustar" is used in Spanish. Nothing special or different there... I love your videos and that little interaction at the beginning of this one was adorable!
