Yes, I remember reading Petals On The Wind and boy did Paul Scott Sheffield have a challening life with his First Wife Julia. I would have loved for there to have been a prequel where Paul's Sister Amanda tells her side of the story and how she maintained a relationship with Paul's Illegitimate Son that he had with a Nurse at The Hospital he worked it.
Michael j fox what an actor. So much of this scene resonates with me in 2023 he really nails it. Loved him in the 80s for bttf and teen wolf but little gems like this were over my head back then.
God this monologue is so fucking hard... It could've gone a million different melodramatic, cliche, self pity party ways in the hands of someone less intelligent and less sensitive than Michael but his brilliant choice to play it like she's not really there with him makes this whole inner dialogue heartbreaking. You love him instead of feeling sorry for him and it takes one hell of an actor in order to seperate these two sentiments. He's fucking gorgeous.
This scene is so heartbreaking. His former co-worker is so incredibly sweet and cares so much about him without expecting anything in return, but he has dug himself in so deep he doesn't realize it.
Watch back to the future again. You'll be surprised to find that Marty is much more complex than people make him out to be. And it's all thanks to Michael.

Little hints like, “I don’t drink much anymore.” And big hints like 4 doses of lithium daily tell you she’s trying at something. Yikes. I've read the book and if I recall it correct, Swoozie's character had a daughter she wasn't on the best terms with which came out over dinner. This scene is slightly more protracted in the novel, which ends with Jamie crashing at her couch and not running out, but they captured its essence well.

All true. Of all people, Woody Harrelson was his drinking partner. Hard to see those two together. Fox, in his book, said he had brutal drinking sessions with Woody on a regular basis.

every man has a story of a woman like this. whether it was a fling a breakup women have a ungodly talent of using men to get what they want and then once they get it ripping a man's heart out and burning it right in front of them. but their best talent is to make the man feel that it was all their fault.

I don’t know if every man has this story, but it must be extremely common. I sure have one or two. And to your other commenter, it’s not just a gold digging/money thing. It could be anything - a social scene, an image, a location, a power trip, to not feel lonely or vulnerable. It’s about using someone to get what she wants, regardless of where he ends up. That’s not love. It’s not the opposite of love either. That’s hate. It’s more subtle than that and almost more sinister, colder, harder to take. Hate and love are opposite sides of the same coin, so if she hates you, she still cared enough to get to that point. It’s not love, but the complete and utter absence of love. Hurts to the bone. And yes, to top it all off, they make you feel like it was your fault. The knife twists. But we can bounce back. And in the end, we’re better for it. A perfect life is a boring thing to look back on. All the best stories are tinged with a little heartache. When you climb out of that shit, you feel stronger than you ever did when you were most under her spell.
Fox was in his element. Goodness, the 80s elevated him to amazing heights. We shall not see his magic again.
