Not bad for a guy who was selling his furniture to eat and using the pay phone in front of his apartment because he couldn't afford a home phone not long before that.
Justine Bateman tells a story about driving down Sunset and seeing a Billboard for Back To The Future, Teen Wolf and Family Ties. Even today that's insane.
@@breakercassidy6946 I think the only person who came close was Prince --- in one week in 1984, he had the #1 album, #1 song, and #1 movie all at once!
It always strikes me how different the tone of late night was back then, much more natural, not a lot of manufactured laughs, editing and such. You even have those quiet, award moments that happen naturally. Miss it.
That's because back then there was no youtube or on demand. Late night was for the weirdo, night owls, college crowed up late. It was only meant to be seen once, and if you missed it (unless you had a VCR to record it) when it aired, you never saw it. Now "late night tv" is not really "late night", because it isn't made for that crowed, but for youtube clips to watch at 2 in the afternoon, while one is at work and hardly working.
@@DrVVVinK I'm a weirdo who doesn't work and love to watch the early releases like Seth Myers Closer Look and Jimmy Kimmel, but also prefer to wait for Colbert monologue upload right around midnight after it's actually aired, or even John Oliver right after it's aired. Michael J Fox is one of the few celebrities I genuinely do care about and admire, so seeing this video uploaded kind of freaked me out. Thankfully he's okay
This is pure Letterman legend! He asks questions that nobody else asks. He makes him uncomfortable about, "Teen Wolf". He asks direct questions about money/gross/net. MJ Fox is a trooper, and he handles it well. I wish more celebrities would not be threatened by honest (Lettermanesqe) interviews. The people love it!
A terrific terrific actor, rewatching Back To The Future trilogy at least thrice a year cannot get enough of them. So unfortunate he got Parkinson's, I bet he would be a regular in the biggest blockbusters today.
I figure Reagan would have especially wanted to meet him, because as the story goes, he had the projectionist roll the film back when the "who's the president in 1985?" line came up. Which apparently made him crack up.
I love watching my favourite stars from the movies and TV shows I loved as a kid giving interviews to great hosts like Letterman and Carson. Back then, I wouldn't have understood half of the context or meaning of their working lives, but now it really gives me a renewed appreciated for such stars, like Michael J. Fox.
I recall Mr. Letterman putting together a celebrity short film festival. He requested that celebrities make a short film. The only short I remember from that episode was the one submitted by Mr. Fox. It dealt with the juxtaposition of a symphony orchestra and a hockey team.
Dave asked Michael about the great film people he'd met like Newman & Redford...he also met the peerless James Cagney who the other's were so fond of...surprized he didn't mention that. Great photos online of the meeting.
I was so in awe of the humor of the Dave of this era. You could even call it idolizing. It definitely had a lifelong influence on my own sense of humor.
These shows have a pre-interview so that Dave knows what to ask. So MJF would have already talked about this with someone a little earlier. (Fred, perhaps?) These questions are not exactly coming out of left field.
My comment was somewhat tongue-in-cheek as I know talk show interviews are often pre-planned :) Even so, I could see MJF wondering why so many questions centered on his brushes with fame, but just shrugging it off and going woth the flow. I wonder if he found them boring and that informed his appearance that night.
You're probably gonna have to give a little more context if you actually want anyone to understand what you are talking about. I am certainly not going to rewatch this whole video looking for that word.

I remember in 1985 when Michael J. Fox had the #1 and #2 movie at the SAME TIME and also a Top 5 show --- he was a superstar

At one point, John Belushi had the number one movie, TV show, and album in America.

Very good point. It definitely wasn't as formulaic as today.

What a class act Fox is
A terrific terrific actor, rewatching Back To The Future trilogy at least thrice a year cannot get enough of them. So unfortunate he got Parkinson's, I bet he would be a regular in the biggest blockbusters today.
He would have been bigger than Tom cruise today.
You can see how much of a veteran actor he was early on amazing star
Watched back to the future about 10 times yesterday because AMC keeps repeating it, was nostalgic to say the least
Michael always had great fashion sense, if I was a celebrity back in that 80s, that's exactly how I'd dress 😇
GOD BLESS HIM
Look how young, healthy and handsome he was. Nothing lasts forever except your good memories.

MJF absolutely killing it in 1985. I wonder how many 80s kids were named Michael after him and Michael Jackson...
You know his middle name is Andrew, but he didn't want to be 'Michael A Fox', so he changed it to J. 🙂 Really nice guy, like him a lot.
I really liked Michael in Spjn City. I loved that show!
Some interesting questions coming from the interviewer, but I’m so glad you posted this! I never was able to find it before.
He represents all the good.
President Reagan was a fan of Back to the Future and quoted a line from it in his State of the Union Address; he also liked Family Ties.
Or perhaps Peggy Noonan was a fan of the movie.
@@allendracabal0819 No, Reagan watched it at Camp David. He liked the bit when they said 'who is president in 1985? Ronald Reagan. The actor?!'
Dave’s reaction to “I’m a Canadian” really tickled me.

What a talent... loved the opening sketch.
Best comedic timing since Lucille Ball.

Love ya Mike.
I wish I could go Back to the Future... :)
Michael ruled the 80's.
I had to look this one up, just to make sure that he was okay. I’m going to be so sad when Michael J. Fox actually does die!
There is a new movie/doc called 'STILL', you can google it.
They made fun of Teen Wolf...it spawned a sequel, a series, and a revival with a new reboot.
Canadian -- HUHHHH???
2:49 Michael J. Fox mistook Steven Spielberg for his old colleague. 😂😂😂
Why Dave interviewed him like he was a child? :D
I miss this version.
A lot more laid back then and and a lot of just cool funny, hey ya old bag of dirt...LOL I miss people being genuine and just being happy.
Teen Wolf is a good movie!
These are fascinating
Fox seems a little nervous in this interview, but, good lord, the constant requests for anecdotes about celebrities he's met aren't helping!
