    Credit to Spiner for playing all three parts so well, but also credit to the writers for making Soong flawed, Lore redeemable, and Data tempted. And in the end, Lore can't be redeemed, Soong becomes a character you empathize with, and Data sees what emotions really can do and how scary they can be. The arc of these three is absolutely brilliant.

      To be fair, building Data could have given Soong insight on how to repair Lor. If the crystalline entity hadn't shown up Soong likely would've perfected Lor, or at least cured his mental illness

    • @randymotter51
      @randymotter51 2 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      I think his reasoning was that because he started with Lore by giving him everything, which became so tangled up, that he felt it would be impossible to unwind his flaws so he started with a blank slate. Instead of giving Data everything and working down, he would give him no feeling at all and work his way up, from a blank slate. If he could give feelings to one who had none, it may have been possible to make another for Lore. Removing the feelings he had then giving him the same set as Data may have been possible, but there are possible hidden complications with this since we are talking about tampering with what is essentially a brain.
      Would it even be possible to remove the mess in Lore's head without making more problems? Are the feelings he was given too deeply rooted in his neural function to remove them without "killing" him? We can only speculate since such tech still doesn't exist for us and it was probably for the best that his reasoning was not to deeply explored, lest the emotional impact of the scene get drowned out in mcguffins and technobabble. All we can do is take his word that he did not believe it was achievable with the time he had, and that trying it from a different angle with Data was more feasible for him.

    • @ClockworkGearhead
      @ClockworkGearhead 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Correct. It was. In fact, you can see Soong's design philosophies reflected in Lore and Data. In Lore, he sought to make an android out of ambition, pride, and without double-checking the consequences. In Data, he suffered his mistakes, and he suppressed his care into a cold, hard, mathematical reasoning. It's Soong's fingerprints that make up their respective, and exaggerated, personalities.

    • @donovanulrich348
      @donovanulrich348 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Lore had been programmed with basic emotion in the hope he could uncover it naturally but remain humble
      Data had been left a blank slate in the emotional department but the neurons exist and programs can adapt to them
      This is why Data seems emotionally removed, even in episodes where he has ranges of emotion
      He strives to remain Humble first, there for sacrifices his own individuality
      Lore is the exact opposite
      Because of the way he was built and how he evolved
      Data was a combination of skill and luck not to become another Lore, human emotions can corrupt saints

    3:37 Spiner's performance is flawless as Lore in that you can't really tell if he IS being sincere or if it's another long con. Because, like data, he also has had to experience all of the responses around him, either directed towards him or in front of him. You can't really be sure if he has had a change of heart after his father had explained himself, and possibly remembering what it was like for him. Lore and Data are the equivalent of Frankenstein's creature - a being who gave in to baser emotion because his creator rejected him - and Pinocchio - a puppet who longs to be human - as Riker affiliated him with in their first meeting. I truly hope that we get to see Lore again, as he was deactivated by Data and disassembled.

    Now that I see this scene just on its own, knowing the whole episode, but having the opportunity to examine just this scene, and think about its analogy to real life, it is way deeper than I realized before. Lore could have had what he deserved all along, and the opportunity was lost, and he has such good reason to be bitter. One story I would love to see brought to life is the creation of Lore, Data, B4, and the events leading to the annihilation of the Omicron Theta colony and the Starfleet people finding and activating Data. We've seen Data learn grow, evolve, and seen his end, and his other end, but his beginning is only a story we have been told and have never seen.

    Aaaaaand the twist where Lore steals the chip could have entirely been avoided if Soong had told Lore during this conversation "now that I know you're alive I'll make you one and fix ya up"
    Like, surely there isn't too little time, Soong spent so long *designing* the first chip, he already knows exactly what's up with Lore and how to fix it. And if there really wasn't, he could have given his work to Data and Lore to finish.

      No, I think not.
      Some people are never meant to be redeemed. You can offer every one a chance at redemption, but you also must know when they are beyond it.
      Lore. The Joker. Naraku. Etc...
      There has to be fictional characters who are beyond redemption, because there are real people who too are beyond hope. These stories about fictional characters must be a warning for the real monsters.
      You can have pity for them. But one must never forget that they must be stopped.

      @ArcDragoon 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GuiltyKit No, you can. Regardless if a character is fictional or not. Unless the character in question is being written as if they do not have the freedom of choice, then it is assumed said character made that choice. Therefore, these fictional character who are beyond hope of redemption are the analogues for irredeemable real life people. Like for example, Hitler. Even if I knew that his history was marred with child abuse it would be no excuse for his actions and hence beyond redemption. He made those decisions, he is beyond redemption. There are real monsters in real life, and fictional characters allow people to explore these monsters.

      I thought it was a brilliantly human reaction. He had internalized the idea that he was the inferior android because he was created without something as vital as emotions. I'm sure it didn't help that Lore came around and reinforced that idea at every turn (even though he was a sociopathic homicidal maniac). It's hard to deprogram self-perception.
      Then again, I run on the idea that Data had emotions--at least, insofar as that he had attachments, aversions, and had a conscience that seemed to go beyond his programming. He felt 'empty' after Tasha died, was clearly conflicted at meeting (and being betrayed by) her sister, decided that he needed to protect a growing cybernetic sentience at the expense of his crewmates because he felt he had a moral obligation to help ones like himself, etc. Data had emotions in every way that counted, he just didn't _feel_ them the way organic creatures did.

    I never realized the parallel between this episode and The Bible.
    Guess it never really clicked, because I actively stay away from that stuff in my youth. The older I got the more I started to see in this world. True evil and darkness taking over places of authority and power here on this Earth. Made me start to wonder. Then realized the signs of all this was all around me. However, I would not be one to try to convert people.
    When people come around to this stuff in their own time, it makes a much bigger impact upon their lives and their sight.

      A PROFOUND lesson one I have been struggling with this last year

    • @OldieWan
      @OldieWan 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RegentofSparta Truly it is very profound! I am just a simple man who does my best to live a life outside of regulations and rules, while still adhering to my own moral compass and rules that give me a leg up. It has kept me out of the "justice" system. It has kept me out of dead end marriages and other things that can bring harm to us men.
      I tried to steer clear of most religion while paying it enough respect to listen to those who seemed like they had something to offer me in a spiritual and mental sense.
      Most of this has come down to self fulfilling prophecies brought on by extremists on both sides of the political isle.
      I will still stay out of churches and keep my distance from religious extremists.
      The far left and far right have brought about all this in a way that is very interesting to me.
      Thus following and reading the bible can give you an insight to what is coming. Not so much because all of it is 100% real. But because it was made to be real.
      Each side did their part to bring about what we are dealing with in our culture and societies.
      And in the end, we can see these things play out. One could be lured into the sense the bible was right the whole time.
      I try not to get lured into that. When all that has played out has been just that.
      Self fulfilling prophecies.
      Brought on by the worst people we have on this Earth.
      So when I see meaning in the Bible and other religious materials, I see something deeper into it. The very thing that can only be seen when a man comes to this in his own time.
      After a good many losses in my life and lots of hard knocks it starts to make a little bit of sense.
      But nothing is 100% sure thing.
      So I try to keep an open mind. And thus could write a 15 chapter book on the subject. YT won't let me do videos without taking them down and striking my channels. Which gives me even more resolve that I might be onto something.
      Thank you for your reply! Communication is the only way forward.

    You know, given enterpise, with the doctor there working on augments prior to androids... I've always wondered. Wouldn't it be neat if this was actually Flint? Born in 3800 bc... grew up realizing he was immortal. Traveling the middle east becoming Methuselah, teaching Moses, deciding that humanity needed a sterner hand becoming King Solomon, then Alexander the Great. When ruling with power didn't work, he tried changing humanity through religion... creating Christianity... That didn't work well... so he tried uplifting humanity with arts and culture, taking on identies such as Leonardo da Vinci.
    From this there's a good chance he went into genetics trying to improve humanity that way... and we got the Eugenics wars... Then in enterprise we meet a Sune, who's trying to fix the augments... doesn't go over well at all... so gets into androids... From there we go to Flint where he's still working on androids but simple emotions causes them to "crash"... next we get data without emotions and sune still working.

    This was such a cringly obvious setup: Say the procedure is simple, and then retreat and leave Lore along with the chip, and they don't even know whether Soong will ever wake up from his sleep.
    And if Soong was a bit less trusting, he could have told Lore that Data can be a guinea pig and if the chip works properly, they can both study his work and build one for Lore that moves him a bit closer to Data. - So much potential there, but the dramatic villain plot has to advance relentlessly.
