    Lore was a rarity among Star Trek villians. Normally they were at least moderately sympathetic or at least understandable. Lore was a petulant child who loved to break things, a perfect foil to the compassionate and logical Data. Brett Spiner did a great job helping me loathe this character.

    • @Rubyofthedead
      @Rubyofthedead 3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Lore wasn't hard to hate, but you have to realize that he was malfunctioning. If he were a human, he would be classified as insane and would be confined to an institution until he could be cured. The problem with Lore is that an android of his capabilities is incredibly dangerous and nobody ever incapacitated him and tried to repair his faulty programming. When he was finally shut off by Data, he was simply dismantled by Starfleet. Yes, he acted with the emotional maturity of a child, but one with with 10x the strength of an adult and many times the intelligence. The best episode of the Twilight Zone, "It's a Good Life" and the derivative TOS episode "Charlie X" very perfectly demonstrated how a child can be absolutely terrifying if they have power.

    • @WaitingtoHit
      @WaitingtoHit 3 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      I didn't hear a "never" in there, but I think the "couldn't" was just about the time he knew he had left after finding out Lore was alive. Even before Lore assaulted him, he was feeble and knew he would soon be dead. To fix Lore, he'd have to be certain that Data's chip worked well enough and then figure out how to design a similar one that was suited to Lore. After that, who knows how long the actual construction would have taken? This is some pretty advanced technology, after all.

    • @AndyR1982
      @AndyR1982 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      As he knew he was dying, i think he scrambled/panic built the chip. Probably kept mental notes and didnt take time to note what he was doing along the way. And saying " i couldn't build another" was simply stating he doesn't have time( even without getting tossed around by Lore). And without physical notes nobody else can make one either. You would have to reverse engineer the only existing chip and risk destroying it and not make another functional one.

    • @_pixelatedsilver2a412
      @_pixelatedsilver2a412 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@AndyR1982 I guess I'm assuming that something that sophisticated would have taken iterations and that those iterations as well as the plans for the final product would be in his computers, which I assume now would be the property of Starfleet. It's not conceivable to design something that complex without the aid of, if not a computer, at least a pen and paper (or just some PADD), especially if there was intent to build a second for lore later on. It shouldn't really require reverse engineering at all if it's all on the computers. The point is that it should be perfectly possible to replicate and not singularly unique.
      That said, I presume there weren't any plans left to copy at Soong's old lab where they found lore either, so perhaps he has his data encrypted or self destructible. I didn't think about that when I initially posted.

      In all fairness, when dealing with nanotech, any short or failure could permanently fuse circuitry. If the good doctor didn't record as he designed, he's built thousands of these chips in the past. But he had to cobble something together, in late age and low resources. Everything counted, but instinct built the chip. But age and time, he may not have recorded it properly. But now Data is aware he can be heavily altered with a proper part. He's used his parts for other things after all and they were properly modified and restored or replicated. But what if the chip was bad? Would Data turn out like Lore? Would he go rogue and go killing? This was a blessing in design for Data. Lore thought he could make a mistake and he obviously did, because Lore had much more emotion than Data did. And those parts of neurocircuitry look similar betwen the 2, so he should be able to spot the differences in what he built. But he didn't, Lore was right. But he was also wrong in what he did. Today Data have learned many things about the human condition and his own creation in this course of events, Stardate 2367

Fundamentally making Lore and Data one individual and reconciling the differences the brothers had as one, like basically Lore being closer to being human goes through an arc of learning to be like his brother. I don't know if Brent is really up for being Data/Lore for another series so they could've just had a "And then Data/Lore left to space to make-up for all the damages Lore had wrought." at the end.

    I always found Lore to be a bit too "evil villain," even in later episodes. This episode is the only one to explore why he feels the way he does--I even believe him when he's upset to find out Soong is dying and clearly jealous of Data being made after him. Then Lore deactivated Data, so why not kill him? Why just shut him off? He even took the time to dress him. This shows more complex character motives than "evil twin."

      @@Elly3981 I agree. In the same episode where the scientist explains how different these robots are on the inside, we then see him mixing them up while working on the insides of one of them. He should have instantly recognized the wiring and circuits were different the second he looked inside. Over all, it's just moronic.
      This is one of the many reasons why I prefer the original "Star Trek" series, it had way less "Plot Holes". To be clear, it did have one or two. However, "The Next Generation" trumps it in number of "Plot Holes", flaws, and inconsistencies.
