Moog Matriarch and Subharmonicon Generative Ambient Dusk

  • This is another generative ambient long play. I started patching in the late afternoon and let this run from sunset until dusk. This is my first attempt to pair the Matriarch with the Subharmonicon for any extended period of time. Hopefully it came out okay.
    The SubH is being modulated by the Matriarch LFO and is running directly into the Matriarch through Instrument-In giving it access to both the filter and the delay.
    The Matriarch is playing an accompanying 3 octave arp.
    Reverb provided via Oto Bam.
    Thanks for listening!

    The overdrive in these machines’ mixers is where they become magical and unique to the performer. Especially those triangle waves! You have a great sense of tone and movement and I’ll be looking for your name at the record store

      Honestly, you're channel is the reason I repurchased the Subharmonicon. Your integration of all the Moog submodular stuff has been a big inspiration.

    This is so gorgeous and inspirational.
    I have a Grandmother and a Subharmonicon, and although I love Grandmother more than any other instrument I ever touched, I have yet to have fully become friends with the Subharmonicon.
    Sometimes she shows me lovely melodies and tones from the void I could have never dreamed of, as if it was a magical crystal ball.
    Yet other times it often becomes a stone in the machinery, halting the creative process.
    It is an ally and a fiend at seemingly random times, despite me now understanding it (after countless hours and tutorials)
    It is a complex relation, one I wish to take up again after watching this video.
    Once again. Thank you for the inspiration.

      The subharmonicon is the most beguiling synth I have ever used. I got to the point where I just set down with it intending to explore and experiment. It's incredibly tough to just coax something musical out of it while working with other synths. This recording was kind of a luck break!

    This is wonderful! I have to admit - I quickly read the description and saw the number "33", then floated over the video and thought - WOW - 33 HOURS?!!! After listening for a while, leaving the room, etc., realized it was 33 minutes from sunset to dusk - that makes more sense! Thank you for this - I think I envision something generative but quicker tempo to play along with, be able to shift directions here and there... Thanks for generating ideas!

    Wonderful! I’ll often spend lazy days with this very pairing, patching and drifting away to the glorious textures on offer. I’ve recently bought a Strymon Starlab, which simply takes the SubH into outer space… I’m smitten!

      Thanks, these long pieces take some fingercrossing because you patch and patch and then just let it roll hoping the dynamics don't start to spike.

    Is the out from the subharmonicon to the matriarch and if so, what out on the subharmonicon are you using there and what in on the matriarch? I have so much to learn about this kind of stuff. Thank you.

    • @riotbell5365
      @riotbell5365  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      So it's the standard mono instrument out on the Subharmonicon (1/4 inch jack on the back) running directly into the Instrument In on the Matriarch. I've run multiple different synths into the Matriarch this way, just have to watch levels to make sure things aren't too loud.

    This is etherial , I am curious what you play this unit thru at your home, studio monitors? an amp of some kind? PA? I play guitar but have become fascinated with the Matriarch lately, plus the idea of other Moog modules along with it. Thanks for posting. Any suggestions for a synth beginner?

    • @riotbell5365
      @riotbell5365  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks! I'm also a guitarist who got sucked into the world of synths via pedals. I bought a MicroKorg about 12 years ago and fell deep down the rabbit hole. Like you, I initially thought I would need to run synths through an amp--you can, but it's rare and not always good for the amp (I actually blew out the speaker on a Vox with my MicroKorg when I first started). I just play this by running the Matriarch into a mac via an audio interface and standard instrument cables and from there into studio monitors (nothing too fancy, just JBLs).
      The best advice I'd offer to a beginner is to start small with a modest budget. There are so many brilliant synths today. Never pay full price. Definitely buy used units on Reverb (a lot of "B-stock" and "Mint" units offered by retailers like ProAudioStar and Chicago Music Exchange are actually brand new units never taken out of the box).
      Secondly, don't fall into the analog fetishizing that I fell into as a guitarist. Digital synths sound utterly fantastic today and VSTs are almost indistinguishable from the real thing at this point. As a guitarist, I also found that monosynths did nothing for me. Try and find something with at least 4 voices. A Korg Minilogue or a Hydrasynth Explorer is probably a good place to start. Hope that helps.

      @@riotbell5365 Thank you very very much for this generous response. There is a Moog Matriarch for sale on the local Craigs list for $1600 with a stand , patch cables, books, etc. I think might be too much for a rookie like myself but the price seems reasonable. I used to have a Peavey keyboard amp for my old Roland GR33 guitar synth which is why I mentioned amps. I could route something thru my Scarlett2i2 into some old Tapco 8" monitors. I will check out what you reccomended. Again, thanks .

      @riotbell5365  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      No problem. You absolutely can't go wrong with the Matriarch. It's a wonderful synth and well laid out for a beginner. Every couple of months the big dealers seem to have sales that drop the new price to $1699. It's a bit expensive, but utterly unique and truly something worth keeping forever. @@DrRussPhd

      You just got to jump in and explore. I started out with a Grandmother. The Subharmonicon is a little tough to wrangle. I'm sure there are folks that use it live to great effect, but I'm not that brave.
