i've got a matriarch dark, the moog triple and a grandmother, this is one my all time favourite synths i think my favourite thing is creating a sequence then overwriting it in real time
The Matriarch is my hub for running all my synths through via the VCFs or VCAs to take advantage of the filter and delay. I also have two Gamechanger Audio Light Pedals for a dual mono spring and it's just so freaking sweet to run everything through it.
So damn informative and helpful man. Excellent. I just added Grandmother to Matriarch and Mother this week. I figure now might be best time to buy other than just having so much fun.
My favorite thing about TH-cam is how i have so many people saying, "I'm buying the Matriarch, i'm selling it, i bought it again." I think that just proves it's special. Been that way for a couple years now.. but i absolutely love mine. I'm in a weird musical place where i don't have a genre, and it's been nice to just sit down with it and enjoy it for what it is every day... ignoring tons of other more expensive gear.
Have been making music for decades, and the moment i played it i knew i had to own one… and i will never part with it. It’s part of my musical brain now. 😂
I think the Matriarch makes a lot more sense if you stop trying to make it a Moog One and think of it as a super beefed-up 2020s Minimoog: a mono synth with 4 VCOs in a couple of filters that could do stereo (but BPF is more fun), and there's a delay there too. It gives you modular capabilities, but I think it shines more as a classic mono synth, unpatched.
Loved the first minute and a half of this video - a no bullshit youtuber not desperately tricking me into watching more than I want - I've subscribed.♠♥♣♦
Nice you covered the end at the beginning. I thought, with the new poly inMusic Moog coming that you may have been getting some money set aside for that.
I have both the Grandmother and Matriarch. I don’t feel anything special about the GM but the Matriarch is just unique and I’ll never sell it. The oscillators, stereo delay and paraphonic sequencer are pretty epic.
For the Grandmother to come to life, I think it needs a small modular as a sidecar. For extra osc and modulation. Then a pair of bucket brigade delay pedals (TC sound nice and are cheap).
I bought a matriarch last year wanting to learn more about synthesizers and holy smokes. I love this thing. As a complete newbie the learning curve was a little steep, but after getting to know the functions and possibilities I love it so much. An instrument worth having for a lifetime for sure. I use it for techno as well as a filter/delay for my guitar. Pairing the Subharmonicon and DFAM with it has unlocked some incredible songs and jams. 10/10 would recommend if you can commit the time to understanding its ins and outs.
At 25:00 you've got dual attenuators right next to the modulation section. Patch both of them in, and it dramatically reduces the 'dramatic' response of the LFO Pitch AMT :) also takes the mod wheel right out of the equation...
I had one for a short amount of time. Largely forgot about it, but recently came across a couple of recordings I did back then and listened to them. It really has some fairy dust floating around in its sound that I just cant grasp. The Intellijel Cascadia caught my attention the other day, but the Matriarch still seems captivating
I got the Moog one first, then the grandmother, then the mother32 and dfam, then subharmonicon, then matriarch. They are all great in their own way. Matriarch paraphony sounds are NOT possible on Moog One. Beautiful design.
There are some pieces of gear that should never be let go of, for me the Matriarch is one of those. It is my desert island synth, if I also had electricity. While it does take some study and work, it is an instrument that I have been able to get more out of than any other synth. To me the matriach is on level with a high end, Gibson or custom fender electric guitar or a saxophone or even a Moog model D. it’s better than a model D for what I want. I do get it though it has no presets and you can’t exactly save where you where, same as an analog guitar peddle board.
I have a Matriarch dark and it’s been possibly the most fun I’ve ever had with a synth. Yeah, the global settings are annoying. But I seldom even think about them.
There's some set and forget global settings but other I like to switch around and play with. The chrome browser editor I got (forgot which one) makes it a breeze.
Funny timing with Miles Away’s video. I don’t think I’ll ever sell my Matriarch. It’ll be a modern classic and is such a fascinating and unique device, especially since I want to get a eurorack case in the future. It’s also pretty much the last Moog to be made and manufactured by MOOG, not what they’re about to become with the inMusic acquisition. Seems dumb to let it go, but you do you.
Dumb to let it go because it doesn’t work for you anymore?? 😆 it’ll be pretty dumb to hold onto it when you could use that money towards something that actually works for you.
I Pair mine with a PWM Malevolent, Barp 2600 and a Neutron. Maybe I get a long with mine well because I don’t see it as an instrument unto itself, but really a box of Moog modules with a very nice keyboard attached. I don’t think I’ve ever played it without patching.

Mine is currently put away in its box awaiting for some one to buy it. I like it, I do. And I've been through the 'should I sell it, or should I keep it' routine more times than any other synth I have had. In the end though, I think it will be going for pretty much the same reasons as you mentioned. BTW: the VCOs are pretty much based on the Moog Voyager with more traditional circuits for the waveshapers.
That's a fantastic sounding synth! Damn. I went DAWless two years ago and have a nice little collection of noise-makers. Then, two weeks ago, I picked up the SP404MK2. If I'd been savy to the SP back then, I would have saved a LOT of money. But at least I have plenty of sound sources to sample. But I could have gotten by with only one or two monos and maybe one poly. Or just bought one Moog. Oh, well...first-world problem.
The Matriarch is so magical. I have wanted it since it came out. So much synthesis in one place. I love the colors. I agree that the delay is so important to its vibe. I have an MFB Dominion 1 which is very similar in some ways. Paraphonic, semi modular, built in sequencer and arp. Definitely gets me in a similar place but with a different flavor. Hopefully one day I can add the Matriarch to the family. For now just enjoying vids. Always love your stuff. Thanks hun!
The global settings is definitely a WTF moment for Moog in an otherwise great synth. There are some meh editors out there, I think I'm just going to write my own Python script to do it.
@@AutisticCuriosity I'm sure it can be a selling point, they can do it via USB for all I care. It's cool to have screenless anything and be able to configure on an app on the phone easily and only when you need to, especially compared to that nightmarish keypress system configuration.
Great video as always, Jorb. Really appreciate these longform ones with the thought and depth you provide. I have had my Grandmother for almost a year now and love it. I have been tempted to upgrade to a Matriarch by thinking of it as a GM with more bells and whistles, but honestly, though they share a lot of DNA they are pretty different machines. I think I'll stick with the GM as an immediate and easy to use mono with a lot of tricks up it's sleeve. The other thing I have noticed having recorded with the GM is that it takes up so much space in a mix, cause it thicc. You have to be very deliberate with arrangements and eqing to get it to not overwhelm a song (unless you want that). I imagine that a four osc paraphonic version of that would be even more difficult to get settle in to a full band type mix...
i know it's a matter of personal taste, but the oscillators sound much better if you don't turn them all the way up in the mixer. they are warmer and fuller. if you go past 12:00, they start to clip. its a cool effect but if you do it all the time it becomes fatiguing. also, the main reason for the pitch mod assign is to allow you to modulate the oscillators in sync mode without effecting the base pitch.
In theory it’s a great synth but in the end I realized it was too much of a novelty release for me. If this synth was made more like a Moog version of the DSI Pro 2 with an internal mod matrix, patch memory, etc I would have really loved it. As it is I find it a novelty release used to push the small, cheaply made, overpriced semi modular stuff that came next. Modern features with optional cv/gate jacks would have been nice. I think this was so close to being so great but every time I played it I was more annoyed than anything. If I spend an hour making some crazy sound, I want to be able to save it. Every time I try modular I walk away feeling like I wasted a ton of time. I’ve been making so many One patches every single day. Infinite storage and a mod matrix is so wonderful.
The Moog One proves Moog can make a super modulation analog synth. But I don't think they can make heavy modulation matrix synths at the price point that DSI could. I know every keyboardist equipment piece is unique, and theres tradeoffs, but I'd love more lush synths with modulation, instead of picking a synth that has one or the other. The PRO2 hits the mark, as does the 3, Matrixbrute, etc. Moog should make another followup to the 37, I know they had the subsequent CV, but its been years, the PRO3 really really competes with the sub 37.
I’ve gone back and forth about selling mine, specifically because of how many of the global features are things that I wish had front panel representation. However, it does sound so great and so special, that I know I’d end up regretting that decision. Yeah, it’s not perfect, but there isn’t anything better.
Sounds like I gotta buy another Matriarch so the sold/unsold Matriarch world stays in equilibrium. Great video! I love the Matriarch but I feel you regarding the esoteric key combos to access global settings. The appeal of the synth is the immediacy of operating it without menus, but when you have to dig into the global settings, you really start wishing it had a screen. Hopefully someday, some company will find the perfect balance between immediate sonic exploration and widespread accessible functionality.
This is why I subscribed- warm thoughtful videos bravely exploring ideas without knowing the conclusion for sure. Like having a chat with a nerdy friend who actually gets what you’re so overjoyed and frustrated with. I feel all those global settings frustrations. It’s like having a girlfriend with a fabulous ass and a great but cutting sense of humour but who can be a real b@tch too! Sure get rid of her. Dump the quirky awkwardness … and replace it with what?! There are other synths it’s true BUT this is the MATRIARCH - and we both know you’ll going to miss her and she is in replaceable. On a more serious note the usual reason I want to sell is familiarity- I just need some space then I come back and we’ll WOW! Bloody paint flaked off mine too! You
I really like some of what the Matriarch does, but after using a cheaper true-analog synth with CV and no patch recall, I found it was wildly impractical for what I do. So now I appreciate that sort of thing only from a distance, happy to look but not touch.
If I buy this synth used, or even new, how can I confirm that all those patch points are working properly? Some of them probably make very subtle differences that I don't have the experience to notice.
I have sold mine because first of all it connot save presets, it collects dust, I did not like cv connections at the back and tuning knob at the back, plastic keyboard and cheap-ish plastic everywhere, limited amount of waveforms and oscilator ranges, signal flow around the delay, VCA ''module'' is stripped as hell...why one LFO? useless sequencer (I can use a daw as a sequencer) ...generally cool synth but made in China and who was designing these CV connections made it quite limited...for example mixer can have CV modulation or ADSR as well...each parameter could have CV in but does not...oww...and delay is cool but if it could go down to 0ms it would be A LOT more useful. Very expensive with only 4 voices...6 would be A LOT more useful....
It's not made in China, it's made in the US. Some parts come from China, but this is true for almost every single product in existence. Moog still handbuilds all their synths in the US.
The most interesting thing on this, is these videos will make people buy the Matriarch not sell it. I'm not really sure another synth actually sounds like it. Pretty different and quirky and some new synths lack a lot of character. it's also not just a reissue of something old which is welcome in the synth world too
@@JorbLovesGear haha, hopefully: 1. They'll look at how Sequential and Oberheim are pricing their synths and price accordingly, 2. They see you as a good influencer and spot you one to review. Thanks for this video btw, it made me hope the new Moog synth is a Matriarch with patch saving and 8 note polyphonic for $4-5k. That would be an insta-buy.
is there a way to patch the Matriarch such that the delay “mix knob” just becomes a delay “level” knob and doesn’t affect the volume of the dry synth output?
@@reallyoldcob nope, you could get independent levels by patching into external modules, but unless I forg a out some global setting that knob is always mix.
I haven't tried the Matriarch but I did have the Grandmother for a while, and... yeah. Sold it, kept my old Rogue, which does the things it does much more readily and with zero faff. I've had and sold a bunch of great sounding synths that I just couldn't be arsed to navigate. Life is short. If you can do the things you want with simpler gear, go for it. Seems common now though, this idea of putting functionality behind either obscure shift presses or buried menus that change with every OS update.
I'll never understand people complaining about how long it takes to create a certain patch or sound. When you create a piece of music and ideally document it some way, it potentially could be around until the end of time. How long it took you to come up with a sound is irrelevant to me.
Your Matriarch sound so much better than mine, it is disturbing Im using a Tascam Model 24 mixer with Bluetooth and my phone is hooked up to my mixer. I am running two channels, left in one and right in another. Should i be using one channel and just use the left (mono) channel. My spacing has absolutely no effect.
I have a grandmother which i think is enough for me after years of contemplating selling it for a matriarch. I also have a prologue 16 voice, and though i can gripe about the lack of a real mod matrix and just one LFO, it's so satisfying to have a synth who's baseline sound character is "easy, nice and usable." These moogs have to be tweaked so goddamn much. It's nice for a full afternoon of tinkering but it's a chore
And the buy/sell/buy cycle continues Heh, but does this mean because it takes so much noodling to achieve what you want, you're not into and moving away from euro-rack/modular workflow?
This is an excellent review and I appreciate hearing the peculiarities you like and do not like. However, complaining that a paraphonic synth isn't polyphonic seems a bit unfair. It does what it says it does. Also, chipping the paint on video makes this particular Matriarch famous and therefore worth *more* money.
My section there explaining the voice architecture in the beginning was mostly to help people understood how it behaves before I dug in, I'm not mad it isn't fully polyphonic. And yeah I'll put it in the jorb museum 😂😭
If you sell it, I guarantee you will regret it in less than 6 months. It's a masterpiece of a synth, and I've been wanting one for such a long time lol
Im totally bummed because l dont have stereo from my Matriarch but yous on TH-cam is intensly stereo. Something isnt kosher. I have to call Moog and Tascam. When i ran my Radioshack crap mixer, i heard stereo, but my tascam is mono.
I love my Matriarch for having weird sounds, but it is useless if you want a specific sound. It is very hard to get the same sound twice. And it is almost impossible to get a specific sound, like a piano or a violin. If you recorded a song with the Matriarch, good luck getting again to play in a concert. But i still love it, because I havs 2 Yamahas and 2 Roland's.
In terms of play modes it's comparable to Vermona Perfourmer and, ironically, the loathed and limited but very cool sounding Akai Timbre Wolf. Grandmother and Matriarch are relatively affordable and easy to understand by just looking at the panel which is also really cool. Nice bulky size for the cavemen among us too.
I really do like the Matriarch. But the constant thing I keep running in with mine is how hard it is to get a soft and sweet sound out of it. I feel like no matter what you do, you'll always get a harsh, white noisy patch no matter what you do. I'm thinking about selling it just for that reason alone. I feel like synth this much should be able to do both.
I like to hit the gym and cry in the shower to these videos. I miss her so much 😂

Both of those things get individual attention
Also it's like 3 o clock when they clip
it definitely clips before that. especially in paraphonic mode. i could hear it on your demo. @@JorbLovesGear
sorry. i missed that@@JorbLovesGear
@@wretchro100 you're good it's feature length lmao
Clever sequencer
This is like your Waldorf. Can you put together an equally good Waldorf with your modules?
this a hot chocolate snuggle blankie time video0ooo!!
Cozy up fam
I’ve gone back and forth about selling mine, specifically because of how many of the global features are things that I wish had front panel representation. However, it does sound so great and so special, that I know I’d end up regretting that decision. Yeah, it’s not perfect, but there isn’t anything better.
I'd like to believe the first second of the video was done specifically with me in mind
Hehe, this video just affirms that I'm not selling mine. I don't think I've ever touched the globals on it, myself.
hi Jorb - if you could only choose one of two - the Take 5 and the Matriach .... which one you YOU get ???
If you're hearing resonance 1 on the right that just means you've got your output cables backwards haha
Good 😂
Nice drum machine, is that the TT78? Also, Matriarch is like 10 times more amazing with a few extra eurorack modules to do wonky cv processing.
I love Stereo Ping-Pong Delays.
I've been on the fence for this synth. I'm looking for a mono that can growl, good for bass (I've already got poly's). What's your go-to for bass?
This can absolutely growl, but might be a lot if you aren't willing to explore.
Im partial to my arp odyssey through a drive pedal
What would you replace it with?
I let mine go and bought a Prophet 10. Best decision I made.
I'll buy it from you
ha ha! "(probably)" = my kind of guy
If I buy this synth used, or even new, how can I confirm that all those patch points are working properly? Some of them probably make very subtle differences that I don't have the experience to notice.
Audiorate into S&h into chorus setup mixed less wer
Pretty different and quirky and some new synths lack a lot of character. it's also not just a reissue of something old which is welcome in the synth world too
Someone actually made a good video about the Matriarch, (except me)!
It's very easy to type korn while trying to type jorb
Hello Jorb, is that waveform display for real or you put that in the vid?
That's a mirror pointed at my very real oscilloscope
Super analog.
@@JorbLovesGearshoutout to Cuckoo!
Just in time for that new polyphonic Moog that's coming out
Yeah, just need to borrow eight THOUSAND dollars
@@JorbLovesGear haha, hopefully: 1. They'll look at how Sequential and Oberheim are pricing their synths and price accordingly, 2. They see you as a good influencer and spot you one to review. Thanks for this video btw, it made me hope the new Moog synth is a Matriarch with patch saving and 8 note polyphonic for $4-5k. That would be an insta-buy.
hey Jorb - did you end up selling? do you miss it? do you think you’ll get another one some day?
I do still have it! Not sure for how much longer, but the price seems to just be going up
is there a way to patch the Matriarch such that the delay “mix knob” just becomes a delay “level” knob and doesn’t affect the volume of the dry synth output?
@@reallyoldcob nope, you could get independent levels by patching into external modules, but unless I forg a out some global setting that knob is always mix.
That modulation section does seem very frustrating.
I have a Matriarch but never wanted a Grandmother because I have a Rogue too (my first Moog). Love the Rogue. So raw!
@@stolencoats63 Rogue gets nowhere near enough love imo. Little beastie!
I'll never understand people complaining about how long it takes to create a certain patch or sound. When you create a piece of music and ideally document it some way, it potentially could be around until the end of time. How long it took you to come up with a sound is irrelevant to me.
Your Matriarch sound so much better than mine, it is disturbing
Im using a Tascam Model 24 mixer with Bluetooth and my phone is hooked up to my mixer.
You should have both. I di rumn my Matriarch in monopany.
Trade it in for the upcoming Moog Mirror
Rumors say 5 of them to cover the cost.... Yeah I would
@@JorbLovesGear doesn't everyone on the youtubes get everything for free?🤣
Well, I bought it twice, and sold it twice. So I can relate.
And the buy/sell/buy cycle continues Heh, but does this mean because it takes so much noodling to achieve what you want, you're not into and moving away from euro-rack/modular workflow?
Love my Matriarch. I’ll never part with it!
Say it ain’t so!
What Synth are you making space for? 😅
Polybrute has been calling my name

@@kierenmoore3236 if nobody asks me to demo it, I'm gonna cry
Don’t. I did. Then a year later bought it back.
I got rid of mine because of all those stupid global settings ,
I really do like the Matriarch.
You can do both, I would buy some patches from experienced sound designers to recreate on your matriarch and get to know it more.
Thats actually a great idea@@NealCaen
How much are you selling for?
Not sure yet, smh
