A channel devoted to ambient, drone, and generative music. Making simple electronic pieces that gradually evolve overtime. Trying to be of use when I can. Thanks for watching and listening.
Moog Spectravox Demo Twenty Patches
Here are twenty patches created on the Moog Spectravox. Ten are entirely isolated patches featuring no external CV or carrier signal. Five feature the vocoder, and five feature CV and modulation delivered by the Matriarch.
The patches are distinguishable by type. The vocoder has an obvious mic cable running into the program input, and the external CV patches have a long black patch cable running across the unit from the Matriarch.
Light reverb was used on about half of the patches for the sake of variety, though nothing particularly special. No other effects of editing in post beyond level correction.
Just how useful any of these patches will be to anyone is of course subjective, but I think this collection provides a decent demo of what the unit is capable of.
Timestamps should appear sometime later today or tomorrow.

Moog Matriarch Fifty Patches
มุมมอง 4.4K5 หลายเดือนก่อน
I first started this channel as a way to share various Matriarch patches I had made. I kept promising patch notes that I never got around to, and the patch examples kept piling up on my hard drive. I figure instead of releasing a bunch of little videos, I'd just edit them all into one long video like some of the other patch videos I've made. Still no notes, but I'd love to put together a PDF on...
Hellmouth Moog Spectravox and Strymon Starlab Horror Drone
มุมมอง 5346 หลายเดือนก่อน
I wasn't sure what to expect from the Spectravox. I never thought it would turn out to be one of the meanest drone synths I've ever encountered. It's one oscillator but somehow the resonance compensation plus the spectral shift can just sound ferocious. This is basically the Spectravox running through the Rossum Morbius filter into Qu-Bit Nautilus with reverb via the Strymon Starlab. I feel lik...
Moog Spectravox Oscillator Sound Demo
มุมมอง 8256 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is a simple sound demo that examines the Spectravox as an individual voice, focusing on the two VCO wave shapes and how they interact with the filter. The Spectravox is played via KB CV, CV OUT and Gate Out via the Matriarch (tutorial video by Moog below). There's no vocoding or processing of external sounds going on here. Just the Spectravox "speaking for itself" if that doesn't sound to ...
Moog Spectravox with Guitar Drone Midsummer
มุมมอง 7286 หลายเดือนก่อน
Made this last night on the longest day of the year. Really like this time of year where I have enough natural light to record and film videos in the evening. Recently just got the Spectravox. It reminds me a lot of the Midi Murf, which is something I owned years ago but sold when the prices went nuts (just felt nervous using it). One of my favorite things about the Spectravox is the patchabili...
Moog Matriarch at Dusk Ambient Generative Long Play
มุมมอง 1.6K6 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is a very loose generative "cover" of Radiohead's All I Need. All sounds created with the Matriarch and then processed and further mangled via Eurorack. Listened to so much of this band in high school. Not so much these days. Just feeling nostalgic I guess. Thanks for listening!
Ambient Longplay Eurorack and Guitar with Panharmonium, Mojave, and Starlab
มุมมอง 3146 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is another ambient long play I made with guitar sampled through a eurorack system. Trying my best to make time to make music over the course of the summer. Honestly, I often wonder if I even need hardware to accomplish this sort of thing or if I wouldn't be better off just investing in Reaktor. It's something to think about I suppose. As always, thanks for listening.
Oberheim OB-X8 Forty Free Presets
มุมมอง 1.1K6 หลายเดือนก่อน
Here are the first forty patches I created on the OB-X8. It's unquestionably the richest sounding analog synth I've ever heard in person. A stellar modern reissue that does Tom's legacy proud. I've had a lot more fun designing patches on this synth than I initially thought. The LFO routing is quirky but surprisingly versatile considering how simple things are. The multiple filter types add a co...
Oberheim OBX8 Patch Preview
มุมมอง 3196 หลายเดือนก่อน
Here is a short preview of a patch set that I've been working on for the OBX8. I decided this time to present the patches totally dry with no external effects to give a good sense of what the synth actually sounds like raw. I hope to have a full patch set preview up and available for free download for those who are interested sometime later this weekend.
Guitar and Eurorack with Rossum Panharmonium and Strymon Starlab
มุมมอง 5677 หลายเดือนก่อน
Processing guitar via eurorack is something I've been interested in for years. The possibilities seem endless yet eurorack always has a way of derailing productivity (at least for me). I've been really inspired by Chrisitan Fennesz and Ben Frost and other musicians who heavily process guitar. Most of these artist use computers for their sound mangling. I'm giving it a shot with hardware just be...
Moog Matriarch Twin Peaks Theme
มุมมอง 2.4K8 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is an attempt at the Twin Peaks theme utilizing the Matriarch's step sequencer. My very talented wife has been playing this on piano and wanted to see if she could loosely sequence it on the Matriarch. It's an interesting rendition considering the paraphonic limitations of the synth. Just the Matriarch's oscillators, filter and delay. No offboard effects or processing. Thanks for listening.
Turning the Behringer Kobol Expander into a Horror Drone
มุมมอง 2.9K8 หลายเดือนก่อน
The Kobol Expander is a something I've been curious about for a long while. Considering that it's a wildly rare synth with used prices ranging upwards of 5k for ultra wealthy collectors, I figured it was never anything I'd ever get to see let alone work with. This is the kind of Behringer project I can get on board with. Basically resurrecting an unobtainable piece of synth history and making i...
Osmose into Matriarch Ambient Improvisation
มุมมอง 1.3K8 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is an extended ambient improvisation made by running the Osmose directly into the Matriarch. Levels were a little tough to match, but I think I eventually got it. All sounds are created by the Osmose and Matriarch with no external effects or processing. The Matriarch is providing a pedal point, while the Osmose is providing alternating leads and pads. Honestly, just more Matriarch noodling...
Banjo into Moog Matriarch
มุมมอง 5498 หลายเดือนก่อน
I'm always curious to hear what different instruments sound like when processed through the Instrument-In of the Matriarch. Not a serious piece by any means, just some noodling around for the sake of experimentation. I've been wanting to run a banjo through the Matriarch for awhile, but haven't had a decent preamp. The sm57 probably isn't the best mic for this, especially considering the percus...
Behringer Pro 800 Fifty Patches
มุมมอง 3.9K9 หลายเดือนก่อน
I've spent the last two weeks working almost exclusively with the Behringer Pro 800, and have been incredibly impressed. I bought the synth as a stopgap after selling most of my keyboards over the winter, including the Prophet 10. I must admit, the Pro 800 is a legitimately great sounding synthesizer. No need to qualify anything or emphasize price or value. It just sounds really good. Dark, gri...

"Just posting weird synth stuff that might be of interest to someone on the internet somewhere. " That alone would have earned you my subscription. Synth how to , and general synth nerding is 90% of what i use TH-cam for, and the fact that youre showing us a really interesting piece of Dark Ambient sound design , instead of mediocre techno etc makes your channel even more awesome.
Ah, that's super kind of you to say. It's been a lot of fun posting stuff and connecting with others who share similar tastes. TH-cam is great for that kind of connection. I literally don't know anyone in real life who's interested in synths.
This is truly gorgeous. I love the "whalesong" like feedback element youve made within the sound. I for one would love either patchnotes or a tutorial about how you are making this happen
This is frickin rad dude. only like ten minutes in, but this made my whole day way better. I work from home, and this really hit the spot. Just subscribed.
Thanks for the support. It's been kind of a trip to see people finding and listening to some of this music. I occasionally get a little despondent wondering if I'm wasting my time with electronic music (I'm a guitarist by training). Nice to hear that folks enjoy it.
KOBOLT iss JUTER!!

Beautiful 🌌🔮💖
Man that sounds good. Do you have a reverb going?
Honestly, I can't remember. I want to say no, based on the way the cables are running out of the Matriarch (I normally run a reverb right next to the machine). If I did it was the Oto Bam, which remains the only reverb I use on any of these pieces.
So glad you popped up in my feed. Subscribed for your description. Carry on!
Thanks, I appreciate it!
good work dude. also got one and I´ m impressed with the sound so far
Thanks! I don't think you'll be disappointed. I bought and sold way too many synths over the past five years. The Matriarch is the only thing that's stayed constant. It's a gem.
I’ve been struggling to incorporate this machine into my music. It’s a weird but interesting synth. Your patches are very inspiring. I love Asimov!
Thanks! It's a really quirky machine. I think it works best to treat it as an explorative device. Start fiddling around and see what happens and proceed from there. I hate the "happy accident machine" label, but it's not too far off base.
Get this man some time so we can get a patch book 🥹
Ah, thanks. Seriously the encouragement is what keeps me motivated to keep sharing. I think this is a doable project for 2025.
Fabulous patches, thanks for sharing your hard work!
Thanks! Glad people are finding them.
Zip Drive is incredible. very nice work here
Thanks! I really appreciate the kind feedback. It's cool to know these patches are reaching people's ears.
these are great! I'm a bit of a synth newbie,. how are you achieving the "hamondaise" sound? is it the noise LFO shape modulating the... filter?
Honestly I can't really remember the specifics of this patch. I normally apply a very low amount of random wave LFO to the filter to create a subtle variance for organish sounds. I think that's what's going on here, but can't be 100 percent sure.
Beautiful patches, thank you so much! Love the pads especially. I've used MIDI-OX and it transferred them to bank D automatically.
Glad you found them useful. It's an absurdly good sounding synth for the price. Behringer did a great job with it. Hope you make some good music!
How do I do this? Just got the synth
@@crustaceouspark The Pro 800 comes with Behringer software that should upload when you connect the synth to a computer via midi cable. Transferring should be relatively easy once you download the patches.
THANK YOU for these patches. I'll be using them a lot!
No problem. Always happy to share with other musicians!
Riot wizard! Thanx for sharing inspiration. Personal fav was 'Cosmic Horror', all beautiful thou!
Thanks! It was a fun endeavor. Would love to try another patch set one day.
wow, how did I miss this, super helpfull, thanks!
Thanks! Always happy to share ideas with other musicians!
blankets is so nice wow
Thanks! I feel like I couldn't recreate any of these blind. I hate the "happy accident machine" description, but it really is.
I love JMT stuff.
It's really well built. Top notch drone for sure.
Great!! What notes did you play in the arp? And the clock? Thanks!!!
Honestly, I can't remember. I'm guessing it was a low 1-3-5 progression with a relatively slow clock. The staggered steps on the oscillators are providing a lot of the variation.
Great job! Did you create any sheets yet? I would love to re-build those on my matriarch 😮
Not yet unfortunately. Family and a full-time job are really preventing me from getting to a lot of musical pursuits beyond daily practice.
Everytime I sit down and patch on mine, I create noises that no one else has, its good to know more thank you.
Glad you found the patches helpful. It really is an incredible soundscaping machine. Maybe the best all in one analog package for this kind of thing. I still love it.
Thanks for the patches...now I only have to buy the synth, lol. (I really like this baby.)
Thanks. It's the most affordable way to achieve a great range of Prophet sounds. Absurdly affordable for what it offers.
@@riotbell5365 Yepp, I got one now, the price was irresistable at Thomann. I was afraid that it would be "noisy"...but I don't hear any such things, a pleasant surprise there, lol. I just wish they went with a more modern user interface with proper buttons and display...and with a Kaoss pad, lol. Another thing...I respect the hard work people put into patch programming, I used to donate and purchase for a reasonable price...but too many people setting a very high price, which they have the right to do...but it seems they only want to sell ONE set, lol. I'm not going to buy 100 Pro 800 sounds for 25-35 USD. It's a pity that they can set a correct price, thye could sell more with a lower amount. The point is that I used to buy Ram memory cards for my Roland D50, with patches, they could cost 20-30 USD, a hardware RAM with patches.
Matriarch is in route now im shopping for the sub 😮😂
I'm sure you'll love it. It's easily my favorite synth of all time!
Great Job ! Thanks ! Also I notice the nice patch names !
Thanks! I really try my best with the patch names.
@@riotbell5365 Always a suitable name can raise the value of a patch. I am a KORG sound developer and sometimes I have this problem with the right pre-set name. Of course we have some rules 🙂. I also use Matriarch and will try your sounds someday. Thanks again !
@@polymoog800 Awesome that you work with Korg. I imagine sound designing for a company is a bit different!
Insane
Really nice job keeping these three demanding tools all behaving at the same time. I loved it and added to my OPM playlist: th-cam.com/play/PL4IrRe-fIDp3iiOf8_rqTe1KVI7-XI6qo.html
Thanks! I'm flattered.
don’t you dare without reverb?
Beautiful~ I'm thinking of getting a Grandmother soon to dive a bit more into ambient, and this was very inspirational
Thanks. The Grandmother is a gorgeous synth and a wonderful instrument with which to begin an ambient journey.
My two dream instruments in one video. How wonderful! Not many people are able to generate really good music with either of these units, but you've obviously developed a unique passion for both. Thank you so much for sharing this. It almost like something Brian Eno would do with tape loops. How did you get it to play back notes? Is the delay THAT good?
That's very kind of you. Brian Eno's early work is one of my primary inspirations when putting together these types of pieces. Love the textures and the layering he was able to accomplish with such rudimentary gear. I'm looping via a Microcosm which is off screen.
Well done!
Beautiful work!
Such a wide spread. Jolly❤
Great sound!
Hi. You can connect any eurorack module to the matriarch? Ffor example, a sampler/recorder module, with some recorded sound and play it on the matriarch?
Yes and no. You can run any instrument into the Matriarch provided you have an instrument cable with a 1/4 inch jack (Instrument-In). I've got an Intellijel audio interface module which can convert eurorack signal into line/instrument level. Thus I can run a eurorack sampler like the Assimil8tor into the Matriarch to take advantage of the filter/delay. Hope that helps.
@@riotbell5365 "Thus I can run a eurorack sampler like the Assimil8tor into the Matriarch to take advantage of the filter/delay." could you make a video doing this please? )
@@sashaatree6535 That's actually exactly what's going on in this video. The bass line was recorded with the Matriarch and sampled into the Assimil8tor and looped back into the Matriarch via the Instrument-In. The randomized sequencing is taking place in real time on the Matriarch and the sounds are blended together and sent through the stereo outs of the Matriarch to an audio interface linking up the DAW for final recording.
@@riotbell5365 Ok sir, and is it possible to somehow send sounds recorded in ipad synth to the matriarch?
@@sashaatree6535 Sure. All you would need is an 1/4 jack and something like a preamp or audio interface to raise the iPad output to line level to send it into the Matriarch.
Sticking a cable in gate in with nothing on the other end makes it drone. Then put one in vco mod in breaks the lfo dignal path. Lfo out 1 back into lfo rate for some fun. Audio out back in vcf audio in. Crazy drones sounds for sure. Wonderful machine.
gorgeous, been hoping to hear this application since this came out.
Thanks. I have a difficult time gauging whether anyone is actually interested in the guitar/eurorack stuff.
@@riotbell5365 so do manufacturesr!
This is amazing thank you. I do wish the patch cables were bright colors so I could see where they are all connected. ❤
Thanks. Unfortunately, I don't have anything but black, gray and white. Maybe in the future!
what case is this ?
It's an Arturia Rackbrute 6U.
Like a Boards of Canada our Four Tet track... very nice.
Thanks, that's high praise.
thank you for your service
No problem!
wow.. I always loved moog... it was my first great analog synth. Amazing showoff !!
Moog has such a rich history. My first analog was also a Moog. Glad you found the demonstration helpful!
Thanks for sharing! 🙏🏻 Patches like ‘hot fuzz’, ‘harbors’ ‘haunted castle’, ‘sfam’, ‘goblin’ and ‘chaos zipper’ really demonstrate the more broader sound capabilities of this unique #synth, too 👌🏻
Thanks for taking the time for a thorough listen. It's a synth that can be cajoled into making all sorts of fascinating sounds, just takes a bit of effort and more than a little patience!
Super helpful!!! I've been wondering if the Kobol can do this, before buying it, and here you are doing this amazingly! Really cool piece!
Thanks. It sounds so much better than I was expecting for the price. Absolute killer drone synth.
Beautiful tones, Matriarch is amazing to run audio of all sorts through - nice clean demo
Totally agree. All the Matriarch. But pretty crazy you can just run a guitar straight into it.
Has to be the greatest water patch , the rest meeeh
The water patch was pure stroke of luck. Couldn't create it again in a hundred years without looking at the recording.
@@riotbell5365 that's the beauty of it, in the older days we had to finish the track on the spot because the next day the things never sounded the same even when you let them powered.
I didn’t think I was going to like this, but I really do. Great use of guitar to make music not wankery!
Thanks, though I fear I generate far more wankery than I'd like to admit.
This is very good for asleep to and hearing it in your dreams, done it a few times 👍🏾
Thanks. It's really cool that people find this relaxing and actually listen all the way through.
Thank you for all the important commercials!!! I ended vid before it finished .. ruined
I didn't see any commercials....
