So, we've had a few questions about whether or not either of us are disabled and, just in case any of y'all missed it in the description: I helped co-write this video and I am both physically and mentally disabled. The complaints within this video are also complaints voiced by various disabled individuals over the course of the show's run but were brushed under the rug by both the creator of the show and her fanbase. Hence why the video was made in the first place. While Cat indeed took on the role as the narrator of this video, it was a mutual decision between the pair of us as she is better at public speaking than myself. It was very kind of her to do so, and such a decision does not mean my voice and that of other disabled individuals isn't applicable here, folks. It's also worth noting that My Pride also heavily advertised itself as an "LGBT+ friendly" show (this actually took precedence over it being pro-disability at times, funnily enough) and Cat is a lesbian, so please do not forget that her identity has been misappropriated by this show as well and she therefore has a right to be offended on that front. Thank you.
so i myself am a disabled individual. it is VERY BAD OPTICS on the creators behalf that the person to "reclaim" nothing's name on her behalf is feather. a very not disabled individual. if it was nothing reclaiming her name and owning it, saying "i'm not afraid of anything" i would have gotten behind that. but nah. cant have the female lead showing any degree of autonomy i guess.
Honestly, I had no idea the creator did that. As a bisexual person, the "representation" of the main character(yes, I know her name, just don't like saying it) isn't great. Definitely tokenism. Also, I didn't know she is bisexual. The show didn't do a good job on letting me know. Edit: Braveheart isn't good representation.
I’m queer, trans, and neurodivergent/have mental illness. I genuinely hate the fact that literally no one except for Spark and StarMane stand up for her. And the way that PowerStrike tries to act as if her daughter is selfish or at fault for some reason, just reminded me of how much I was told that I’m hurting everyone else around me because of the fact I struggle with SH and that it would be my fault that others would be destroyed if I succeeded at one of my attempts. It’s always about someone else. It’s never about the person who’s ACTUALLY suffering. And when people say “Why do you care what others think” because that seems to be all I’m worth. I’m selfish because I’m suicidal and it’s all my fault that others are sad about it and that I’m just making everyone else miserable. I’m supposed to live BECAUSE I’d hurt others around me if I left. It’s always about everyone else. I’m a burden and I’m at fault. It makes me so angry to see everyone in that show throwing themselves a pity party because they’re so self centered and unable to feel empathy for those who are actually suffering and claiming that they’re hurting you. Sorry for the long paragraph.
smh they shouldve made nothing change her name to something like 'something' or 'everything' like in I Hope So. practically halfway through she didnt give a hoot nor a holler about 'keeping her name' so she shouldve just done it.
From the trailer of My Pride, I remember this quote from Hover: "Look, these lions (Powerstrike and half-sisters) may hurt you, they may hate you, but they're your family!" That's something I have absolutely no idea what it's supposed to mean.
@@itsnothanss Paraphrasing: "if your family is abusive, you still have an obligation to care about them, because (biological ofc, found family who?) faaamiiilyyy is what REALLY matters :3" Bleh ;-;
Ya that’s like such a bad message to any person of age. I was abused mentally and physically by my family and I totally disagree with that message. Oof
I forgot about that part. Now I really am worried that Nothing will be treated like a bitch if she doesn't forgive her family for all the horrible things that they did to her.
imagine if in Warriors cats, Firestar didn’t change the name from Brightpaw to Brightheart, and she remained with "Lostface" so someone says _"this is your name, is that you are, you don’t have to change because you give him a good meaning :)"_ Man would be the worst
very good comparisons, I will never get over that they choose to keep her abilist name. like. literary how? how did tribble think that would be impovering?
Also, remember how Cloudtail, Brightheart's mate, completely refused to use the horrible name Bluestar gave her, and even assured her in the book that he would NEVER use it, as well as constantly badgering Firestar to fix it almost immediately after he became leader? While Hover is shown having absolutely zero objection to using it, and the only comment she has to give about it is MOCKING and LAUGHING at it.
@@ax3247 my dude the name clearly upset her, what do you mean you don’t see an issue? And don’t try to tell me that it’s on Brightpaw to make herself ok with an ableist, horrible name because disabled people are absolutely not obligated to tolerate ableist names or slurs.
Nothing: Is humiliated, abused, denied by her mother, physically assaulted by Quickmane and threatened with death Hover: "BuT yOu mIsSeD mY cErEmOnY >:("
Lol this reminds me of that one vine but with Nothing and Hover. Hover: You remember that one time I liked you? Nothing: No? Hover: GOOD CUZ IT NEVER HAPPENED!!!
as a butch lesbian, I’m really tired of people writing us as abusive. we can be soft and sweet and kind, and masc, all at the same time. excellent video!
@@frankiejo4430 she did act really unrealistically she got angry but honestly I think she's still suppossed to be a good character. I just think it's a problem with inconsistent writing. I'm hoping with season 2 she will come across as a more kind character as they explore the emotions of the traveling lionesses.
"When your protagonist has become popular, changing their name can be a bit weird" Looks at Tribble's extensive history with the Warrior Cats series, where characters changing their names over the course of their lives is literally baked into the worldbuilding (and changing an awful ableist name into one that's not demeaning is a plot point that, despite the rampant ableism in many of the Warriors books, is actually handled decently well) ...yeah, I don't think tribble can claim even that excuse for not changing Nothing's name. Not that it held much water anyway, as you pointed out
I think many of us enjoyed what looked like an awesome animated show about lions that was similiar to lion king that we just did not see all the red flags
Hello, this is the voice of Ghost! Just wanted to say that I really enjoy and appreciate this review. You bring up so many interesting points, and I love how the structure flows so casually, despite it being over two hours long! I want to thank you in addition for giving it a fair shake, and for the comparisons to Watership Down (love that novel!). This is so so ensightful, and the time you probably had to put into this to make it as detailed as it is is BONKERS! Love it. 👊
I hope more people involved see this, and use it as a teaching tool to better the series. Loved your voice work, btw! If I can certainly see myself voice claiming a character of mine with yours!
@@chickennuggetpaw HOORAY I WIN It’s one of my favorite novels! Always found the awesome pacing and character development impossible to replicate in movie form
You know, rewatching the 4th episode, I realize how disgusting and abusive Hover was being. She repeatedly used guilt trip on Nothing, shaming her and guilting. She pushed all the blame on her, and left her with her brother LITERALLY ABOUT TO DIE. LIKE WHAT THE HELL?? If she truly joined for Nothing and loved and cared for her, she wouldn’t get THIS DAMN UPSET and would help her, even begrudgingly. Thank you for shedding a light on that.
Honestly though, when I watched it for the first time, I thought that was a pretty crappy move for Hover to make. Quickmane was literally about to murder Nothing and Hover didn’t come over to stop him, what the heck? Hover doesn’t deserve Nothing. Nothing deserves better.
Hovers behavior always bothered me here... I try to bring this up at times and get, "You have to see it from Hover's PoV." And it's like... No. She had every reason to be upset but to let Nothing get beaten, almost killed and let her brother die? Imagine how Nothing would have felt had Quickmane succeeded and killed Fire. Imagine Nothing breaking that news to everyone and crying about it. Does Hover really think Nothin would just be okay? C'mon
IKR the first time I watched this I was just surprised Hover did that! Like Hover u bitch how u Could u just stand from the sidelines and do jackshit like what the hell is wrong with u-
I've seen this irl with young couples a lot, hoping that hover will learn from it and change her attitude now that she's suffered for it, but if she csnt grow and learn then 😬
@@soniquefus I feel like this is somewhat (just a tad) down to show style too, like when something happens between 2 charas the rest are kinda cut out, like when feather was attacked by fire nothing was stock still, possibly to cut down on animation and time But yeah, it baffled me how hover and even power strike love her yet did nothing when quickmane went to kill her :/
Can I just say I love you for the acknowledgement of Hover and Nothing's toxic relationship? I felt it early on, but I knew that ship sunk as soon as Hover did NOTHING and watched as Nothing's life was threatened, as she was beaten. No matter what, if you truly love or care about someone, your not going to stand there and do nothing. The worse part she could do afterwards was blame her and say it was her fault. She victim blamed her, and that was the grossest, sickest thing. If the creators wanted to give conflict, they did it in a way to ensure nobody would ever look at this couple with love, instead with a curdling feeling in their stomach. :/ I ship Nothing with emotional support and happiness. Fuck Hover.
Whenever I bring this up in the My Pride discord server, they always say, "Look at it from Hover's Point of View. She gave up her life for Nothing and Nothing wasn't there when she needed her!"... so... it's okay that she let Nothing be beaten in front of her and nearly killed? I'm sorry but, no. That will always bother the fuck out of me. I really would like Nothing to tell Hover off when they meet again but I'm sure it won't happen.
@@soniquefus The whole "look st it from Hover's POV" point would be valid... If they didnt half-ass Hover's reaction about it and made her go out of character for the sake of the plot. She hated prides and stated many times that she had no respect for pride law, but then she goes and puts said law before her girlfriend? Yeah, i call bs
As weird as it may be, I totally ship her with ghost.... I know he's every trapped spirit in one body but he's, besides feather, been the ONLY one to actually be kind to her and show her support
@@Sassafrass95 I agree, Ghost is one of the kindest characters in the entire series, and one of the few to treat Nothing with the respect she deserves
I also don't like how there seems to be allusions to Hover being the reincarnation of Karabi, and the implications of them being destined to be together make me uncomfortable because of Hover's mistreatment of Nothing.
If Hover is an incarnation of Karabi that just makes a better case for her to get with Farleap instead of Nothing. The show seems to be leaning towards a “follow your own path, deny destiny” kinda moral, and if they were destined to be together then yeesh- what moral would that be? “Follow your own path, but only when there’s an angry sun goddess forcing you to do it.” Honestly though I can see the show pulling that, even if it creates more plot holes then it closes.
I want a plot twist where Nothing meets someone else who IS Karabi’s reincarnation and finds out she was wrong about Hover, but that’s definitely not going to happen, unfortunately.
@@rageewing Same, I want Nothing to end up with somebody else who isn’t toxic towards her. I kind of like her with Ghost because that one scene when he encouraged her to keep going really spoke to me and she really needed to hear it.
@@darbysantics I don’t think she could end up with Ghost. I believe they’re the vessel of the spirits Asra couldn’t collect, and who knows how many that could be
Honestly the whole "rejecting the mane" thing could have been easily solved by a character like Quickmane early on making a reference to "heretic prides". Something like Quickmane refusing to give the main character a second attempt at the test and saying "I refuse to let my pride become like those false bands of heretics." You could also LITERALLY solve Powerstrike by having her trying to support Nothing and help her but continuously being blocked by Quickmane, with the Nothing name being chosen by Quickmane. Which would also build the idea that Pride Law is used by cruel leaders to justify their abuse and power trips, and that it's also a pick and choose by ignoring that the Hunt Chief chooses the name so he could be cruel. We could also see that Powerstrike doesn't have a choice in her position in the pride or relationship with Quickmane. And honestly Nothing should have chosen to leave the pride herself. Maybe saying she'll find these "heretics". Also let's be honest animals in the wild adapt pretty well to injuries if they survive.
My Pride believes in equality when in comes to making women in power as equally terrible as their tyrannical male leaders. Even tho it made more sense to have Sharptongue be the evil one, which is where I thought the show was gonna go.
also, a term i'm surprised you didn't use (maybe because it's too vulgar lol) is "trauma porn". trauma porn is defined as a bunch of horrible things happening to someone (Nothing) and exploiting their trauma for shock value or to make the audience feel bad for the victim. so many bad things happen to Nothing that her suicidal ideation is honestly believable; everyone she loves either leaves, dies, or abuses her to the point that the question as to why she hasn't laid down and died yet is valid to ask. there's only so much trauma someone can go through before complete shutdown- which could be seen as her becoming meek and submissive (only sometimes though!), but as you said, her writing is inconsistent enough that this can't be relied on. the character seems to have a supernatural ability to just keep enduring abuse on top of abuse for the sake of, again, shock value and a need to make the audience feel bad for Nothing. it's not believable and it's not really particularly interesting. it just makes the viewer feel uncomfortable and bored, because the traumatic events are dumped without any real emphasis, realism, or nuance. i haven't really watched the series in its entirety, but it reads and feels like... well, trauma porn. not great.
This is actually my first time hearing the phrase and I'm surprised I never have because trauma porn is something I've been openly critical on for years. Thanks for pointing it out!
@Sacred Drågøń I get that, but the suffering is just too gratuitous and despite all of the series efforts to make you sympathize with Nothing, it just comes across as really depressing and just leaves us with a sad broken protagonist who we sympathize with, not through her own journey and character development, but through seeing how awful the world is to her and making the audience want to pat and protect her like she's a Moe protagonist from a dark magical girl anime.
It is really hard for me to criticize anyone who is willing to put in that much work in a self animation. But how analytically you break this down is incredible and I love it. This video is awesome.
That's nice of you to mention! As someone who has been doing a similar thing, I can't help but look up to the effort and the dedication Tribble has put into making her self-animated stories. They have flaws but glad you can appreciate that.
OH THANK GOD somebody noticed Hover didn't do anything when Farleap insulted Nothing and then just went besties with her. THEN people began saying "Oh Farleap used to be the worst character but I now see her in a new light and she's great" and I'm like: WHAT??? THAT AWFUL EXCUSE OF SISTER THAT BULLIED HER ALL HER LIFE IS NOT FORGIVEN YET. Farleap doesn't even say she cares about Nothing, she doesn't give a damn about her and when they left the pride because "she saw what's wrong" NO? Pretty sure that brainless lion did it just for Hover. Also even if Powerstrike and Farleap told Hover they "CaREd" but did they say it to Nothing? The ABUSED one?? F them
Kyoga here! This analysis was incredible. Thank you for this beautiful video! It was executed brilliantly. It’s so important to hear the voices of individuals from all walks of life and I appreciate the work you and RJ put in to making yours heard. I see, hear, and respect you both! Like Soggy said, thank you for giving My Pride a fair chance! All of your points were valid and thorough and I really feel like this was made with a lot of care. Lite being an abusive partner was something I never even thought about. I could never explain why I felt so defensive of Kyoga until you pointed that out! It completely checks out and my mind is blown.
Hi, Kyoga! Just want to say, I agree with everything you said and everything that the video said as well. You are a great voice actor and I really hope the My Pride series continues :)
As someone who's disabled, if I received a humiliating, degrading name based on my disability, I'd try to get a new name. That is not empowerment, it's accepting cruelty and ignorance by those who are supposed to love you. I have an old head injury among others that effects my mood, memory, coordination, headaches and cognitive ability. Why should I ever accept the name Braindamage? (I've been called this before and I can easily tell you it is humiliating and wrecks your confidence)
Watching this, something occurred to me. How empowering would it be if Kyoga also would’ve been disabled? I feel like that would be such a big thing for Nothing.
I hope Powerstrike isn’t forgiven. She doesn’t even seem to care to much about Farleap or Silentstalk even. She said that Nothing would have been her proudest daughter in front of them basically. She doesn’t deserve redemption in my opinion. Reminds me of Rainflower in warriors.
But we all know Nothing will definitely forgive her as every sweet-hearted main character. And it's really sad. Powerstrike doesn't deverse forgiveness from her children and expecially from Nothing.
@@mothwingthemedicinecat, yeah, yeah, because if you are main character you must be soft, nice to other, don't kill anyone and, mainly, forgive every abuser, who used you, because "I'M gOoD pErSoN, oF cOuRsE I DoN't hAvE rIgHt tO bE MaD aT pErSoNs wHo bEeN bUlLiNg Me mY eNtIrE lIvE!". I'm really hope Nothing won't forgive Powerstrike. She is terrible mother for her cubs, she doesn't care about her daughters faith (Nothing's hard live with injury and Silentstalk's abusive relationship). She has no excuses for her actions. She literally called her own child "nothing"! I swear by every gods, if Nothing will forgive Powerstrike, I will jump from my window.
As a trans gay man, the creators insane misandry makes me feel disgusting for existing. She's literally like a sterotype MRAs would make up- someone who believes that all men are either abusers or that they're killed by other abusive men. I don't mind wanting to have a female led show but putting down your male cast is NOT how you do it.
I can't say for sure the creator actually feels that way, but it sure fuckin seems that way in her writing for this show specifically, not to mention her awful takes on trans men and nonbinary people, and similar shit she's pulled doesn't help her case either. And people eat this show up like it's revolutionary by making the narrative "women are the victims and men are the oppressors" is gross. It's irresponsible at best. (Especially considering how much of its audience is teenagers.)
I think that direction was taken because that is how real male lions behave, not the creator trying to paint human men in a certain colour. But I guess you’d have to ask the creator🤷🏼♀️
friendly reminder that even if it IS based off the way real lions act, these animals are extremely personified, have religion, and organized society. it's in the same sort of way as Warrior Cats is. just because it *could* be based off how real lions act, it's never confirmed, and it's still harmful. -a fellow gay trans man
When you mentioned Hover refusing to call out the actions of our protagonist’s abusive family, that reminded me of a moment in the trailer for this show, where Hover pretty much says, “Yeah, these people may be abusive to you and make you feel like crap, but they’re your family, and family is important and stuff!11!”
I remember that. If they kept it that would've been yikes. She still yikes but LOL you're normally supposed to make things better in the final product.
Former My Pride staff member here (I was a character designer and briefly voiced Asra when Kyoga got possessed) I just wanted to say that you did a great job critiquing the show and giving it a fair chance. Sorry this is way late of a response. I’ll also admit I feel really silly for defending Powerstrike and Hover in some livestreams. Anyway love your comic as well, great art and writing all around!
"I love you so much it hurts! That's the problem! Don't you see!? You could have been my proudest achievement! And yet........when I look at you all I see is who you could have been. It makes me feel...weak. And that is something a hunt chief can never be." Translation: I do love you, buuuuut I also feel embarrassed and ashamed of you whenever you're around because of the fact that you're crippled (which wasn't even your fault in the first place). Why couldn't you have just been normal!? >:( Remind me again why Powerstrike is more deserving of redemption than Fire? 😒
@@animaker3627 We're talking about from a writing standpoint. Fire only turned into a terrible person at the end of the series. Powerstrike sucked and was an abusive harpy THE WHOLE TIME. Fire, the supportive brother who was supposed to be one of the only people who cared for Nothing, is now a baby murdering prick. And Powerstrike, the woman who mentally scarred and abused her own daughter, is getting a redemption arch. Do you not see the problem with this?
@@animaker3627 I guess those are some good points. I still don't want either of them to have redemption arcs though. After everything Powerstrike put Nothing through (and we can see that she's the main abuser aside from Quickmane) her getting redeemed to that Nothing can forgive her mother after everything makes me feel nervous. If Nothing doesn't forgive Powerstrike after her redemption arc, then she might be painted as the one who's being a bitch. Which is not fair to the actual abuse victim. Tribble will have to be VERY careful while writing this story if she wants to do it respectfully and I don't really know if she's capable of that.
@@queen-monarch The saddest part is that Tribble could have made Powerstrike's redemption more believable if she was lashing out at Nothing as a form of guilt over not being able to protect two of her children instead of feeling ashamed of her daughter because of her disability. Rather than saying "And yet.........when I look at you....all I see is what you could have been." She says "And yet........when I look at you....all I'm reminded of is that day I failed to protect you and Spark."
@@animaker3627 That's the only way I can see this going right. I think it's ok for an abusive character to learn to stop being abusive, but the victim shouldn't have to forgive them for it.
I agree 100% hover and nothing have a very toxic relationship, whenever someone says there so cute, the main thing I ask is “why?” A lot and almost every time I asked they would always respond with “their so gay that they are adorable.” It’s as if people are saying gay relationships are adorable even when they are abusive. Yes all kinds of relationships can be cute but toxic and abusive are horrible and shouldn’t be found as “cute”
That was also a similar problem with Chloe and Max from life is strange, people liked the dynamic of cool punk girl with introverted dork, so most failed to see the relationship was toxic, I also think maybe some people were afraid to call the relationship out on its toxicity in fear of being called homophobic.
Sympathetic villains need to be handled really carefully. If you don’t write them well, then it just comes off as “Protagonists are the bad guys abusing the villain until the villain does something evil to remind us they are the villain” or “Villian is a terrible person but the show keeps shoving how sad they are in our face until we hate them even more.”
I’m just imagining the scene with Fire and Nothing fighting being redone. Where instead of Nothing saying “my name.. is Nothing!” She says something along the lines of: “My name.. is not sister.. and my name is not Nothing. My name.. is Everything. I am everything pride law is not. I’m everything you’re not, Fire. I’m better, and bigger then all this. And by the will of the goddesses... I’m going to fix.. everything .” Or something. Idk I feel like it would have been so epic. Such a missed opportunity.
I will still never get this show treating Nothing as if she is some kind of anomaly simply because she has an injured leg when lions get injured all the time from either hunts, fights with other predators, or conflicts with other prides. Heck, you can even find a video of a lioness with an injured front leg taking down a wildebeest all by herself. It also bugs me how the ableism is specifically aimed towards Nothing and literally no one else just because she is the show's punching bag. Quickmane's daughter never receives any comments on her eyes or anything- she is played for comic relief before she dies. Moonstrike has a lioness in her pride that is BLIND. How is she treated?? Waterhunter never says a single word or vocalizes anything throughout the entire season, even in situations where she should ( like I dunno, her /SISTER/ Powerstrike leaving the pride and all??), is she mute? I guess not since she roars fine??? How do prides treat lions that can't speak? (I just have so many questions.) Despite Quickmane being half blind leading to his death from Proud, never receives any ableist comments or treatment due to his own injury and while I am NOT AT ALL saying that ableism is a good thing, I feel like if you are gonna have it in this story, the MANES should get harshly treated as well if not more so, if they have injuries that prevent them from doing the ONE thing their lion society role is- and that is protect the pride. If they can't do that, then lionesses shouldn't accept them right off the bat. ( again, not saying that ableism is a good thing.) While the lionesses themselves should have more of a support system amongst one another since they are the ones constantly risking their lives taking down these large prey animals to feed the pride since these things CAN happen and they need to prepare for such events. But whatever I suppose, I might be looking at this whole thing from an entirely different perspective and missing the point entirely. Random Note: I KNOW the show plays out Fire wanting a pride is because *~survival~* and *~food~*, but I like to joke that the only reason Fire went off is because he desperately wants to get laid. I ain't got no other "logical" explanation for that major assassination of his character. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Anyways, I could rant all day about this show's wasted potential but I won't- this is such a great analysis video and I love hearing insight on how to treat such topics in media, especially when advertising your show as LGBT and Disabled Friendly or empowering to those groups. The editing was great and I loved the expressions throughout the video. Awesome work. I look forward to seeing more video essays like this on various topics if you and RJ plan to do more in the future.
Just imagine how cool this story could have been if by battling a mane as child, she was given a co ruling position in the tribe! Sharp tongue’s reason for Nothing getting to live was that she bested him in combat, but what if instead of that it gave her a pseudo mane position. She keeps her determined and spirited attitude while struggling through politics, ableism, and her traumatic experiences. She can tackle the sexist society of the prides from a leadership position. If they still want to include a prideless arc, there can be a coup in the clan that gets her exiled, and those who want to join her on her mission of reform like Feather and Hover can leave with her. No need for reincarnation, no more of Nothing getting kicked around and doing nothing for episodes and episodes. So much potential here
@@DetectiveCalico as I mentioned before it disgusted me that a cub who took on a full grown male and won was abused and treated with disgust instead of being seen as strong and worthy of a proper name.... the only reason she even hurt her leg was defending herself but noooo let's forget all about that and treat her like crap while loving all over the man who was at first hated by her own mother
So I'm actually disabled, suffering from mental health issues (PTSD being a major one of them) And I grew up in an abusive ablist sexist environment I really related to Nothing because I had so much in common with her So many of these criticisms are honestly incredibly fair but it is kinda of sad because I can see so many of my own actions reflected in Nothing. Especially how I was when I was younger (around 18-20) I'm hopeful because this is only the first season, we will see nothing's character grow and change I hope she doesn't forgive her mother I honestly don't even think she should forgive Hover I wanna see her develop her voice the same way I did (Voice would actually make a great name for her too)
@@queen-monarch I'm honestly ecstatic to hear that you all like Voice as a name :.) Finding my voice has been the most important thing to me and I think for her character it would be perfect 🥺❤️
I could say a lot, but you've made all the points here. HUGE agree on the point about butches - Hover is clearly butch-coded, and seeing her turn into a asshole/useless in the face of her girlfriend's abuse is really upsetting as a butch.
When I was originally watching My Pride, I definitely felt something wasn’t right with the story, but due to that I was only watching the episodes as they came out, I only remembered the major plot points of the previous episode(s). This video definitely confirmed my theory that the series had a problem in the story development, I had no idea it was this bad.
THANK YOU! I’ve been trying to say something like this without sounding like I’m just changing my opinion and saving face! I’m so happy to know that I’m not!
Personally, as a physically disabled person myself, Feather's 'speech' seemed a little iffy. Glad you pointed it out-- alongside Fire's sudden personality change. This review actually points out a lot of things I went 'huh, well that happened out of nowhere, and I agree wholeheartedly with the video. Might consider watching more of your stuff, actually, as this was really good!
@@unchartedraider7547 if you go back to the first episode you do see this in what he says to nothing when she suggests playing no mane, and he insists females can't be manes, and that they're to weak
@@unchartedraider7547 He didnt have a lot of screen time, though, due to leaving the sister steppe. But it was shown a little bit when Fire and Nothing were playing as cubs and Fire said "Lionesses are too weak to be manes" and "I like _real_ things".
Its amazing how tangle, a side character who barely has any screen time and gets killed off-screen, treats nothing much better than her own family and girlfriend
I think it could be incredibly empowering for Nothing to not only get a proper name, but for her to not accept Powerstike, Hover, and Farleap back into her life after they eventually find her. It could really be a turning point! The abuse shes suffered from those three lionesses should not be something she should excuse. I just hope that Tribble sees this video and really reflects on how to make the story better! I don’t think it’s too late to turn this show around but there needs to be a lot of changes
Yes, she could also use that turning point to break the cycle Cansu set Nothing to do, by not getting together and turning away from Hover if she is the reincarnation of Karbi, and finally moving on from the past.
@@cre4ture101 yes! I also think perhaps hover doesn’t have to be Karbi. It would be refreshing to see Nothing meet another lioness who 1, doesn’t manipulate and abuse her. And 2, one she genuinely has chemistry with! I think it would be nice for her to eventually join a pride of lions who care for her greatly, it could symbolize the shows name “my pride.”
@@almondmilk9832 i mean in the books there was a lion called golden who was the love interest so maybe they could bring him back or maybe change his gender or smth
my favorite my pride world building is the implication that lions can't stumble or fall. especially not inexperienced yearlings in the process of taking a very literal test of their self-worth that will permenantly brand them for life with no option for a do-over (I also cannot hyperbolize the "nopenopenope" i immediately felt when you said the pro-cub-killing bootlicker was my trans rep for this series)
I'll be honest, I have multiple disabilities, and I didn't think what Feather said was (intentionally) abelist. Nothing's name is abelist but I don't think Feather was coming from a place of abelism. He's a child who absolutely idolized her, regardless of her disability. That being said, what he did say was wrong, but calling him a turd or a shithead for thinking he was being nice isn't the right way to go either. If I were to write it, I'd have Nothing get angry at Feather first for saying what he said, but then I'd show him saying he *thought* he was doing right by her. With Nothing then telling him that while she appreciates the sentiment, it actually puts her down, and that if she wants to change her name or own it, it's her choice to make. I would have been angry at Feather if he had said something like that to me, but I think it's actually important to take his age and lifestyle into account. Scorning someone isn't the answer. Educating is.
This is actually a really good idea! If there is a season 2, and if the creator chooses to change Nothing's name regardless, I hope she would have a conversation with feather telling him that she appreciates what he meant, but keeping the name will continue to hurt her anyway, and she wants to change it. But on her OWN terms. Not by a mane, not through a test, she wants to pick her own name.
@@queen-monarch FACTS!! it would be such good character development for nothing considering the fact that she isnt going to let anyone control her life anymore, and she'll make decisions for herself
my pride honestly completely failed to convey its message. its not empowering at all that the disabled lioness wasn't kept alive at all by herself, but by divine intervention. its ridiculous that people act like this writing was smart. thank you for this video
I still have not finished the review, mind you. Tough, I do am a huge fan of my pride- but you are right. I felt like Nothing's bravery and all her good traits are honestly wasted because she is not the one using them to stay alive while keeping her 'humanity' (felinity???), but instead the goddesses are making it so. I certainly do hope that in the future it will be Nothing to control her destiny. Like, 'fuck your prophecies or missions, i will make my destiny' but at this point it'd be kinda childish. I still love her, and her brother too even if he turned a complete asshole. I kinda understand why they made him so, but i do not approve of the execution. To make him so bad they'd have to show the audience just how bad the prideless stretch is. So that his transformation would make sense.
You raise valid points, but I must say it never even occurred to me that Fire and Tangle were lovers, and I don't think their close interaction is enough to support that idea. Their behaviour indicated nothing more than that they were two males in a coalition who just happened to be friends. In any case, thanks for the analysis, Hope; I think it's a decent one.
I believe it was confirmed by the creators... which just brings up the point the video made: you shouldn't have to consume supplementary material on the side in order to understand lore, relationship, and why people do what they do. They should've made it obvious that they were meant to be lovers IN the show, not some side thing that people have to go looking for.
I feel like the pride of lionesses rejecting Fire would work better if he had revealed he killed their mane and had instead been met with horror. They didn't follow pride law, and so Fire basically just killed her mate for nothing.
Except they DO follow Pride Law because they tell Fire that, in order for him to become their Mane, he must carry out the most barbaric rule of Pride Law there is: which is to kill all cubs that aren't his. lol
I was a winner of the huntress contest and I was pretty disappointed with the execution of it when it came to showing them. My girl Earthpelt was so blurry you could hardly see her cheek spots. I understand that they needed to focus on the foreground, but also....they really didn't have to blur it out so much. The whole point of having a contest to put your character in a series is to SEE your character in that series. The fandom is super rabid too. I got a lot of hate when everything was announced because my character slightly looks like Kovu. Overall, I haven't had the best experience with this series.
As much I love this series, I can agree that it's an absolute trainwreck when it comes to some things And as for that big yikes moment where Nothing just kinda embraces her shitty ableist name, there were like a million thoughts I had where that could have been a lot less...gross. One of them was that maybe instead of Feather changing the fucked up meaning of Nothing's name, maybe he could have just hated calling her that and made up his own name for her out on the stretch. When they find Fire, instead of calling her 'sister', he keeps referring to her as Nothing, and Feather snaps at him to stop calling her that. Then, during the fight between Fire and Nothing, when Fire calls her by her shitty ableist name, instead of accepting it, Nothing shouts that her name isn't Nothing, and instead accepts the one Feather gave her as her real name. Personally I would have been way more empowered by that than the bullshit we actually got-
This. Even from a writing perspective it’s a dumb idea. Even if *you* think Nothing accepting her name is a good idea, half the fandom doesn’t. If you’re going to offend actual disabled people with your disabled representation, then it’s probably not good representation. I doubt the people who say Nothing accepting her name is a good idea would be angry if Nothing got a new name, and it wouldn’t offend the people who think that’s it’s a bad idea anymore.
The My Pride fanbase is unhinged. I made a comment somewhere saying that I was deeply uncomfortable by Feather in episode 8 and someone responded saying I only care about my opinion and that they don't care if I was hurting and my wish of having good disabled representation was 'extreme' ... A show meant to empower disabled people now talks over the disabled community in an attempt to erase our lived experiences and oppression so they can enjoy their 'non-problematic' show!!! Wack
I remember talking about that and someone called me the r-slur cause in one of the comments I mentioned I was autistic. The fandom needs to grow tf up.
@@Eyrinthefae04 Damn I'm really sorry about that!!! I've not been called slurs luckily, I've just gotten paragraphs about how wanting to write ableist aspects out of the show is extremest and if I dare call something bigoted I deserve no respect and my hurt doesn't matter. Honestly really hurts.
@DetectiveRJ It's because non-disabled people want to like the show without acknowledging the parts that are problematic and need phasing out. They are complacent to watch it and feel like it's personal attack if you tell them part of their favourite show is bad. People's over attachment to media makes them incapable of processing its flaws and so they lash out against the 'cancellers' instead of using rational thought.
people need to understand that a thing that you like can have flaws and even be problematic. and you can still like it, we all have a guilty pleasure, but to ignore those flaws like they don't exist is straight-up wrong especially the flaw my pride has, and then attack others when they get mentioned so immature. we all wanted this show to be good and I still believe it has the potential to be good in season 2 or at least better. but yeah I am sorry that you got some dumdum insulting you and anyone for just stating your opinion on the show
May I ask why feather makes you uncomfortable? I could see most of the other characters but I thought feather so far was not to bad so I’m super curious?
I really hope Tribble watches this video and takes your criticisms to heart if and when we get a season 2. I cant help but like this show despite my various issues with it and I want it to be good so fuckin bad...
@@ThatLoudCockatoo I know, I like a lot of shit that's highly flawed, but after some of the information coming out about Tribble herself I really just dont wanna support her at all anymore :') The creators of this video have a comic called I Hope So that's everything I like about My Pride without any of the problematic shit so I think I'm just gonna spend my time and energy on that instead

i used to think my pride was cool, but looking back at it 4 years later it’s just.. ew. the writing is so sloppy and all over the place its more confusing than AP physics. theyre so mean to nothing for reason, the part where quickmane scars nothings face and hover, her "girlfriend" does nothing about it then tells her to solver her own problems. and to think she said all that just cuz shes mad over that fuckass ceremony or something. that was so fucked up. not only that, but she had the audacity to be sad when nothing was gone.
"the huntress name braveheart" the warrior cats kid in me is going INSANE. what is it with the "cat-girl gets involved in violence way out of her league when shes young that results in half of her face and one of her legs being extremely scarred, earning her an offensive name for her "ur an adult now" renaming ceremony" trope that makes people want to give her a new name that ends In -heart
Hot take: What if Nothing had no connection to the legends? The whole reincarnation thing could have been kept but what if they had left nothing out of it? Hear me out, the pride (for some unclear reason) have been finding the portrayed interference of the goddesses as a curse but what if that was just the views of the pride? What if the goddesses hadn't been trying to keep Nothing alive because she is a part of a reincarnation cycle they need to break? What if the goddesses saw the fire in her spirit from her action as a cub? What if Nothing simply said the line because she had recently heard the story? Nothing seems to be one of the first lions to stand against pride law and as a freaking cub! Surely that would draw the goddesses attention without her being some reincarnation. Plus, why would the woman who cursed the ass of a man Lite want to suddenly end his suffering cycle? Especially since she didn't seem to care about others when Lite was murdering innocents. The goddesses are looking for a hero, someone brave enough who would be willing to talk to a fucking goddess and get them to reconcile. And here is a cub taking on a no mane because, why should she just lay down and die? Plus, Nothing being the reincarnation who will either break the cycle or continue it sort of gets rid of any urgency. Why is Ghost constantly insisting she needs to do this NOW, regardless of what is going on in her life? She is the one who is going to continue the cycle or not soooooo can she maybe sort out her personal life and then attend to the goddesses problems? I think it would have been really empowering to have a hero who had nothing to do with the reincarnation but instead was recognized by the goddesses as powerful and a hero because of the fire in her heart and spirit. The goddesses themselves didn't judge her for her disabilities but put worth on her personality and strength of spirit. They believe she can do it because damn, she's overcome everything else in her life. They aren't choosing her because of some damn prophecy or whatever but because of who she is. Along with the other issues, I feel like this would have been such a better plot.
Honestly this works so much better, especially given that the whole cycle is based on the Kioga reincarnation killing Lite over and over again, I don’t see the stakes going forward because I think the audience doesn’t really SEE Nothing as capable of murder. It’s really hard to see this series going down a path of whether or not Nothing won’t kill someone, unless they go out of their way to make the Lite reincarnation an absolute TERROR that needs to be dealt with. If Nothing WASN’T the reincarnation and was given the task due to her strength of will, it would put it on her shoulders to prevent a murder that’s directly NOT IN HER HANDS that she can’t just make a conscious choice to avoid. She’d have to be a mediator, someone who actually would have to WORK into ending the cycle by convincing the reincarnations to give up their precious’s lives hate, because she’s not the only party who has to make a decision. It’s something that could play to her strengths! As someone kind hearted with a strong resolve. It would ALSO tie her further to Cansu! It would parallel the relationship the goddesses seem to have with each other. Asra and Sunce constantly have problems and Cansu acts as a mediator. Nothing works to end the cycle that Asra and Sunce’s chosen c a u s e d. Tbh them calling on Nothing to end the cycle just seems like Cansu relying on the fact her chances of killing Lite’s reincarnation are probably slim cause of her disability? Because at this point we’re left to assume all of Kioga’s have been successful at killing Lite: which already seems to be a problem because what’s the likelihood of a lioness in this world killing a male with pride law in action? Has she asked Kioga’s reincarnations to stop BEFORE? Ahaha sorry if I’ma not making much sense but TD;LR You had a very good idea and it works so much better than what the show sets up and implies about the situation.
Something that makes me uncomfortable is how My Pride’s creator writes male characters. Looking at MP and their previous series, Cow of the Wild, the majority of male characters are written to be terrible people. They’re often sexist, sadistic, controlling and violent. The ones that aren’t are usually useless dumbasses. The amount of child killing and mutilation is also extremely unsettling-
In MP you or die as good person (Spark, Starmane, Tangle) or live and become piece of shit (Fire, Quickmane, Proudmane, Lite, kinda Feather). It's kinda annoying. If you want to show how bad patriarchy and make strong female characters, it doesn't mean you should make every male dead or asshole. In good "strong and independent woman"-shows we also have good male characters, in bad ones we got goodie-good females (Powerbottom, Hover and Farfall are terrible and abusive, but author try to make them sympathetic characters) and aBuSiVe, MaNiPuLaTiVe, cRuEl males
i just realized Lite isn't the first time tribble wrote a male character who flew over the edge after a female character rejected them *cough cough Rune from cow of the wild cough cough* i have noticed a trend in tribble's writing where she makes the female characters more sympathetic, and the male characters are demonized, killed off, or forgotten about. like, Fire was one of the FEW living lions that felt any sympathy towards nothing... and they turned him into a murderous asshole. meanwhile, Farleap and Powerstrike, two of nothing's biggest abusers, are given redemption arcs and shown to just be a couple of sadgirls who miss their sister/daughter and was only a prick because waaaaaah Power lost her mate! and waaaaah mommy didn't give Farleap enough hugs! also there was no reason Tangle had to be killed off, there's a hot take for you. he was another male character that actually seemed to feel sympathy towards nothing, feeling bad that she got a name like "Nothing", even calling it "a tough one" and was even impressed that she stood up against a no-mane... only for him to be killed off-screen... Spark is another example, he was actually a good brother towards nothing and yet was killed off almost as soon as he was introduced. same with Starmane, he seemed like a great guy and once again was killed off the moment he was introduced. at this point, i wouldn't be surprised if Ghost was either killed off or turned into a total prick like the other male characters...
its a pretty fair case for gender essentialism in the writing tbh. while yes female lions are oppressed under male lions in this universe, none of the male lions are allowed to be anything but shitty or dead, and female lions are not allowed to be abusive and condemned for it, just made sympathetic. gender essentialism in really any shape or form is bad.
i wouldn't say it's an issue with male characters so much as it is tribble being bad at writing. she treats all the characters shittily, and she has plenty of misogynistic "women are bitches" characters like Midnight, Powerstrike, and Farleap who gleefully enable abuse of their family and friends. it's really just her going with the cheapest, most easily manufactured dramatic beats and often butchering her own already one-dimensional characters in the process.
@@Jackaxed the thing is, midnight is constantly punished for acting the way she does, and powerstrike and farleap show remorse for how they acted towards nothing and are getting an obvious redemption arc. midnight is the only female character that's shown to have irredeemable qualities (i even heard she would have been killed off had the series continued) to her character. as i said, farleap and powerstrike were assholes to nothing, but it was later revealed that they were only assholes because they were just sadgirls... meanwhile the male characters all get beat with either the death stick or the asshole stick. i go back to my examples of fire and tangle. tangle was killed off for no other reason than to make fire look like a prick, and fire just randomly went from being nice to nothing to being an absolute asshole to her.
I was just thinking about how similar Lite was to Rune. Doesn’t make me like either of them more tho, since both were brutes who murdered innocent people just because “they were heartbroken” But please, if Ghost’s character pulls a 180 I swear to god I will riot! He’s the good character we all need!
What is bitterly amusing is how much of Nothing's character is copied and pasted from Luna in Cow of the Wild (With notes of Alari). I don't know what Tribble's deal is with horrifically abusing marginalized characters but this comes off as weirdly obsessive and just...gross. It's like torture porn but for abuse. It's clear a ton of carried-over ideas are from COTW in a lot of aspects, this one being the most grievous.
@@Indigoharpy SAME it's not the worst thing ever but it IS a sign of amateur writing, something you can actively work to improve with analysis and someone editing your work. Tribble doesn't want any of that with her high school stories, though. She takes it very personally and only wants cheap, immediate impacts on emotions or stuff that is there for the sake of looking cool. If you can't recognize your story was fucked from the skeleton the entire body of work will blow, no matter how much you try to be Fake Woke.
As a person with a physical/mental disability, when Hover laughed at Nothing’s name it always rubbed me the wrong way. If someone laughed at my name that was given to me based on my disability, I’d immediately cut that person out of my life, but Nothing doesn’t. She doesn’t even bring it up! It just is…horrible!
I know that the scene just wanted to introduce Hover as this character who doesn't make a big deal out of Nothing's... everything and is able to be goofy about it because she's oh so nonchalant and uncaring, but _the way_ she laughed is just crazy to me. Sure, you _may_ joke about it if the target themself is comfortable with it (which she wasn't, nor did Hover ask), but Hover just bursted out laughing like a maniac at the trauma of someone she just met.
I'm personally a fan of the series, but there was valid criticism in your video. It was also really disheartening to see Nothing constantly losing the people who made up her meager support circle. I could actually understand Hover being upset-- the whole naming ceremony was essentially the moment she'd be casting away her whole identity, and the one lioness she joined the pride for/her emotional anchor wasn't there. But I was surprised she didn't even cry out for Quickmane to stop when he started slapping Nothing around. I feel like she could have stood up for her girlfriend while still being upset with her and it would have felt emotionally organic. I also feel like the series would just need minor fixes in the script for it to sit better with people. What if when Fire introduced Nothing to his no-mane friends the conversation turned icky, and she realized that she was being treated with condescending pity for Fire's poor crippled sister? Have Nothing pick up on that, have her get a little offended, let her get into a minor tiff with Fire over it before realizing that it's nearly noon and she's going to miss Hover's assessment. A scene like that would have also further tipped off Fire's behavior in the final episodes. Powerstrike's final cruel speech to Nothing could have been turned into a powerful callback to their last interaction together. Imagine if after Powerstrike said all that sh!t Nothing snarled and said something like "that's not love, that's pity! I don't want your pity!" echoing the previous night where she tried to comfort her mom over Sharptongue's death and got chewed out for it. Have Nothing be the one to run off after Quickmane without another word and maybe Hover/Longrun being the one who rushes in front of her and tries to talk her out of it, leading to their argument. I love people's suggestion that Nothing could have renamed herself Something. While they were on the stretch, cub-Feather could have admitted that he didn't like calling Nothing by her name and asked her if she wanted a prideless name like Hover used to. Nothing could have been the pride law stickler explaining that she'd sworn to keep it, and there like-- could have been a moment where Feather's like "well I've gotta call you something, anything other than *nothing*" and she jokes that "Something" is a nice suggestion, Feather pouts at first because he was trying to be serious but is ultimately like, okay fine, I'm calling you Something. Just imagine Fire calling her by her old pride name during the season finale fight and she corrects him with the name she and Feather had come up with instead. I have a soft spot for Feather and quite love him, it's the writing that gave him a faulty inspirational speech honestly. Also... yeah I'm still a little upset that Moonstrike pushed so hard for Fire to kill Feather.
petition to actually write My Pride instead of animation so we can actually get into the details, like maybe a whole chapter of Nothing and Hover having more interactions.
Its like with warrior cats, Brightpaw being named Lostface. That's why I loved her name change to Brightheart, since her new name was due to her personality and abilities.
It's insane to arrive now and see that there are recent comments on such an old video, it just shows how good and current it is too. Congratulations to the creators for having the courage and patience to release it.
I just finished it, and I didn’t even think about how bad of a writing it was. I blindly enjoyed it. While it definitely did have the potential to be a good series, they did tackle to many ideas at once. I agree with that. A series would do better with focusing on one idea or situation. I hope series two will be better.
@@fairybebbiesuwu366 can people not make their own decisions? My god stop saying “don’t let this video influence you”. People are allowed to come to their own conclusions.
So basically it suffers all the same issues as the warrior cats series it seems, honesty fiction focused around groups/clans/prides/packs of animals are hard not to immediately fall into chaos
I hate how Hover and Nothing never say I love you to each other, how they only have one sweet moment, how easy it could have been to be more blatent about their feelings for each other, and how many opportunities Hover had to stand up for Nothing. Strong, snarky Hover. Flucking hell! For a series thats constantly saying look we have the gays™️, they're being awfully coy about their relationship and mutual "support".
this is a brilliant analysis. Not only is it very well researched and educating it points out the flaws that less informed people could miss and it was by far more interesting to watch and internalize than the series itself. Great work on this.
I just realized that My Pride had a plot point similar to Warrior Cats. When the kid tells her "Don't change your name! It means so much more now, Nothing is a great name!" When the kits were attacked at adderrock, one of their faces was torn up. Bluestar (in her emo period) decided to call her Lostface as a "shakes fist" to starclan. Later they change it to Brightheart because her heart shines bright in-spite of it all. Imagine if they had said "no Lostface! Don't change your name, Lostface has been reclaimed by you, it means you never lose face in the face of danger!" Telling that to the cat with a ripped up face to have her attention drawn to her disability rather than who she is. This story line can be done, but not in the way they did it.
That's not the only plot point similar to WC either, Farleap even has a Blossomfall moment in episode 7 lol it's completely made up, but they tried (they didn't even try) "Cansu light your path" is just "May Starclan light your path" but it makes way less sense. There's probably other parts that are yoinked from Warriors as well, just to be done worse than Warriors.
You can’t even say that’s the only part. Stormkit is named Crookedkit after breaking his jaw, could be argued as not a disability but he does have to eat differently and it’s still super bad. He never he thinks to ask for it to get changed! The names changed and he feels a little bad about it and then that’s it. Then his names Crookedjaw! So that’s more of the My Pride way of going about it, except it’s never even mentioned to be a shit name by anyone involved.
i agree with the point of Lite actually winning even though Kyoga said he'd never win, he created a whole way a life that has lasted for generations that every lion has come to accept and believe in to the point that everyone is a brain dead jerk now and the world is caca, seems like a win for Lite to me.
See, its a "superficial" win. and something the entire series is going against. Literally from the point hover arrived, they have said "this way of life is shit." and its been shown over and over again it is. Lite may have "won". but he didn't at the same time. because there will ALWAY be people who will stand for whats right. for freedom and happiness. And the best way to do that, isnt to keep killing, but to accept and forgive.
This may be an unpopular opinion, but I'd like Nothing to be renamed Fears Nothing. Yes, the abusive name is still there, but she can draw strength from the new version. She mutilated a no-mame as a cub, survived being mutilated herself, made it to adulthood, faced the Prideless Stretch with a cub in tow, and challenged her deranged brother fearlessly! Nothing is worthy of the new, brave name.
@@AAaaA-pg3rp True. That takes care of Feather's little hissy fit about her name and rejecting the idea that she is worthless because of her injury altogether.
@@AAaaA-pg3rp Reading over my comment again, I realize I worded that wrong. Nothing taking the name Fearless would be rejecting the idea that her injury makes her worthless and would also spit in Feather's furry little face for actually whining that she wasn't being called something abusive. That's better! 😊
I never realised how much this show really pulled a big corporation style of representation. The whole build up to the show was about these lesbian lions and how they were in love and fighting for their right to love and live but then the show came out and they spend more time separated than together. And I know the show is also about Nothing's injury and her dealing/overcoming it but the show could easily handle two things. We don't even really get a proper scene of them confirming their feelings for one another. There's a scene of Nothing clearly getting a crush on Hover and some scenes of them close, but no "i love yous" or big affectionate moments showing a relationship beyond flirting. We just have to assume they're in a relationship.
I laughed when Hover said "It must be hard" She was like Zuko telling Sokka "That's rough buddy" after Sokka told "My first girlfriend turned into a moon" Like XDDD ATLA reverse or smth? Lolll
I'm both physically and mentally disabled, and I could relate to Nothing a LOT. Having an abusive mother, being in a same-sex relationship, having went through a traumatic event at a young age, getting called slurs and being constantly belittled by those around her to the point she became suicidal. All of those aspects made her really relatable to me, but what hurt me the most while watching this series was seeing how it blatantly excused ableism and tried to give some sort of message about forgiving your abuser. I loved this series when I first watched it, but in retrospect it's really sad that this is all the representation we get. A character that's seemingly the entire storyline's punching bag, a character made to be miserable because she's disabled.
I'm very sorry to hear about your experiences. Your comment is exactly why I feel people trying to defend this show's writing and getting so offended that we - god forbid - didn't care when Feather (aka the ableist creator's mouthpiece) "died" is so despicable to me. Real people see themselves in these characters. Real people have come to us and informed us that this show is directly responsible for them staying in toxic relationships that they would've escaped from earlier had its writing not played down the warning signs of abuse. Because yeah, we care more about real people being personally affected by this show's writing in this house over a fictional lion cub. Though calling him a cub is generous since the show outright states he could count as an adult lion pretty much. He's old enough to know better than to excuse ableism but guess what: ableism is taught by society? Would've been great for the creator to point this out with Feather's speech but nope, her hurt feel feels over being criticised by disabled individuals was the priority here. And that is why Nothing could not get a single win in this show. Because it was not the priority. The priority was Tribble trying to score progressive brownie points by writing how she - an able-bodied individual - thinks the disabled in media should be perceived: as miserable, downtrodden victims. And that's why we went as hard as we did at that point in the video. We're sick of this nonsense.
I have really strong issues with this series. I hate how Powerstrike is so evil to Nothing but fans like her because "at least she tolerated Nothing's relationship with Hover." Like um....what? The lore of this world also heavily bothers me. It is a female centric religion yet somehow a male mortal managed to over throw their authority to make pride law and its extremely male centric hierarchy. But why did the goddesses allow this? "Dunno lol" seems to be the only answer. Firemane's sudden turn to evilness also felt like it came out of nowhere. It really felt like they ruined his character in the span of a single episode just to prove a point.
I remember someone telling me once that Powerstrike is a "complicated bitch" and she was just dealing with Starmane's death and all these excuses as to why she abused Nothing... I really felt like I was on the outside when hating her so I'm glad this video came along
1)Tyran attacks women even if it's a woman ruler. Think of all these stupid sexist laws in Victorian era. 2)Fire was nice to Nothing out of pity. He was always a sexist dude. In desperation he didn't really think about implications of what Moonstrike said.
The fact that there is another disabled character in Moonstrikes pride who is described to "Help anyone in need" but did nothing to help Nothing when she was being attacked by Fire is SO irritating like,, YOU OF ALL PEOPLE SHOULD BE HELPING MOONDUST!!
Tbf Nothing challenged Fire, he did not just attacked her out of the blue. Still not a nice situation, but it was literally a duel, so I can see why she decided not to interfere .
a quick tidbit! people who are afab and take on traditionally masculine roles (for example a trans man becoming a father) are not always going to be butch, and people who arent assigned female at birth, (for example, a trans woman comfortable with using the term butch to describe herself) are also valid butches themselves. thank you for the great video all the same!
You're right! I've actually addressed this in a few comments, mostly from like. Way back when this was first posted, so they get missed. But you are correct
The subplot about lion homophobia had me rolling, especially since homosexual behaviours have been observed in real lions _multiple times_ 💀 If the fans weren't so uptight about "gritty realism" then it would be fine and not funny, but like...this is very much a human construct lmao
Yes and no. Homosexual behavior has been observed in cats, that’s true, but that doesn’t mean it is automatically sexual in nature-we as humans just like to interpret it in that way because we A) don’t know it any better or B) are projecting our own sexuality onto them. When cats of the same gender-male and female alike-hump each other it is done to show off dominance; to fight hierarchy; to get rid off frustration (all of the examples can also be observed in dogs). However it is never done because of lust or (even worse) romantic love. I’m writing xenofiction stories and have done my fair share of research about cats. All the books and articles I’ve read stated the above and also that „cats don’t have sex for the pleasure, only to reproduce“ (which makes sense considering that the act itself is pretty painful for the she-cat). They are by nature heterosexual. People who claim different point at a video of two males, one humping the other, and say: »See? They’re gay!«-like I said, this is just a human interpretation of animal behavior, nothing more. If you have actual studies done on this topic proving otherwise I’d love to see them. This comment isn’t meant as an attack, I want you to know that. I read comments like yours often and it shows me the majority is pretty uneducated when it comes to this topic (or maybe they only see what they want to see?)
@@c.s2193You do know some individuals do mate with pleasure in mind right? Some male domestic cats (normally the ones with excess hormones) will activelly try to mate with young kittens; kittens that are nowhere near the right age to reproduce or have shown any indicative of being receptive. There is no way we can adamantly say "animals only mate for reproduction", if an animal is intelligent enough it won't take long for it to realize 'oh wait, this feels good', and they'll seek out the thing that felt good whenever they have time and energy to spare.
@@sakuraice22 Again, it seems like your interpretation of things rather than actual facts. Here are the listed reasons why male cats occasionally mate with kittens: »1. If your male cat is sexually aggressive, it will constantly mount other cats, animals, inanimate objects, or in this case, kittens. Sexual aggression is frequently the result of behavioral issues rather than hormones. Some male cats can be sexually aggressive even after being neutered, which may explain why some male cats try to mate with a kitten. This sexual aggression is also why male cats will frequently mount their offspring, both male and female. (Sexual Aggression: »When male cats mount one another, it’s in an effort to establish dominance. Animal behaviorists refer to this behavior as sexual aggression. This behavior may occur when two cats are competing for resources, such as food or territory. In such cases, mounting behavior may be used as a way to intimidate or establish dominance over the other cat.«) 2. Cats typically assert their dominance through their behaviors. This can be accomplished by standing upright, staring for an extended time, chewing off whiskers, raising the base of their tails, or even hissing and yowling. Some cats can also urinate and bunt, and they may even fight to gain dominance over other cats. However, there have been isolated reports of male cats attempting to mate with kittens to assert dominance. In a way, it demonstrates that he’s stronger than the kitten. If the kitten is fighting the male cat or showing fear, this is likely the cause of the behavior. 3. Most kittens reach sexual maturity at six months. However, there have been reports of kittens reaching sexual maturity as early as four months. This could be why your male cat is attempting to mate with your kitten, as the kitten is entering estrus and is in the presence of a sexually active male.« And considering your statement that „some individuals do mate with pleasure in mind”: »Dogs and cats are not like people when it comes to sex. They don't cycle the same way and there's no evidence, behaviorally or otherwise, that sexual activity brings them any specific pleasure akin to orgasm [...]« Nothing you said is grounded-or at least you're giving me nothing more to work with than your own conclusions which could be easily proven wrong with a couple of google searches. The question stands: Can cats be gay? There is no clear answer to that. »›Whether there's any kind of same-sex sexual preference going on, that's left entirely to the imagination in the sense that the data just [doesn't] exist to demonstrate one way or the other,‹ said Paul Vasey from the University of Lethbridge to the Washington Post. He continues to say that being exclusively gay is ›exceptionally rare‹ in the animal kingdom.« However, it is a fact that their sexual behavior is often misinterpreted by humans. »Here's another reason why it's tough to find the answer to these questions: for animals, what's presumed to be a mating behavior may be misinterpreted. For example, both male and female dogs will mount other dogs. While it is possible that some pets do this because they want to engage in sexual activities, there are many other reasons they may be performing that behavior. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals® (ASPCA) suggests that mounting is less about sex and more about playing, releasing stress or showing dominance.« I hope I could help you understand the topic a bit more. Like I said, the majority is uneducated when it comes to the topic of animal sexuality-or in this specific case the sexuality of cats-because they keep looking at it through the human lense.
Leaving another comment, you mentioned in the Powerstrike/Farleap section that Farleap was a great missed opportunity to highlight how parental abuse affects kids who aren’t directly in the firing line. This got me thinking about TLK2, where Kovu was the main target for Zira’s abuse, while Nuka was left to the sidelines and forgotten about until he died. The comparison isn’t perfect by any means, but it’s funny to me considering that MP fans try to claim that their favorite show is better than TLK because of how “realistic” it is.
Zira is actually a very good but overlooked example of an abusive mother in animated media. Mainly because she originates from a DTV Disney sequel that many do not view too kindly but I'll defend TLK2's writing to the grave because of the genius but subtle way it portrays parental abuse. Though I wouldn't say Zira had a "main target" when it came to any of her children. All of them suffered under her abuse because she never viewed them as individuals, but weapons to use at her disposal. They have no agency in her eyes. This is evident when she threatens Vitani's life at the end of the movie for turning on her. She's willing to kill her own daughter (even after losing her son) to further her agenda. That's scary af for a Disney movie?? Because this show was too busy trying to make us feel bad for an abuser, they missed a golden opportunity to have Powerstrike value her society and her position over her children. Like Zira if she actually had achieved her dreams of being a Queen. It's clear from her speech in Episode 5 that she only ever viewed Nothing as a potential successor and how her disability makes her fall short at essentially being Powerstrike 2.0 but the show tries to make it a heart-wrenching, sympathetic moment when that's bullshit on so many levels. Powerstrike simply views her daughter as an extension of herself rather than an individual, and holds her completely at fault for not meeting the impossible standard of being exactly like her. And MP fans have the audacity to blame it all on trauma when that's neither confirmed nor a valid excuse to be an ableist tiger parent (no pun intended). But yeah, you're completely right: it is absolutely laughable that MP fans try and argue that this show has better writing than The Lion King or try and credit it with coming up with tropes that The Lion King either came up with first or handled ten times better. It's OK to have a preference of course but give me a fucking break. lol - RJ
You made a lot of good points. Honestly, this show is just so weird to me. I felt, like, gaslighted??? I’m not explaining it very well but I thought that the show was the coolest thing ever before this video came along. How the hell i I never noticed its glaring flaws is beyond me.
But anyway, this video is really well done. I have a lot of favorite quotes: “GOD CAME DOWN FROM THE HEAVENS TO TELL YOU THAT THE BIBLE IS WRONG AND YOU WERE ALL ‘I don’t know, the Bible makes a good case.’” “You stand before your pride, your main, and your cunt chief.” Every “fraternizing with an outsider.” “The sheer level of inconsistency in this one clip gave me an aneurysm.” “The couple that the show’s Twitter shows off Iike a fun fair attraction.” “Yeet the little shit into the next dimension for all I care.”
There's a lot of things I don't get about Nothing. That scar over her eye means she got the fur around it skinned off, but with how Quick-Mane scratched her, she should have lost the whole eye. There's no way he only peeled off her skin when we clearly see his claws attempting to puncture her. And that "scratch" on her leg, she should have lost her whole front leg from that injury. She's likely a month or two old, given her size, and with all four of Quick-Mane's claws scraping her leg like that, the leg would have been torn off. She would not have survived, and if she did, those little scars she got would not be the end result Let's just ignore the false logic and non-realistic outcomes of that fight, and focus on how her life should have been after that. Lionesses are strong. Nothing would have developed a pain tolerance overtime, and would have been able to walk on her injured leg as she grew up. She could have had a minor limp, but she still would have been able to hunt and run like a normal lioness. She wouldn't be completely out of commission. It just doesn't make sense that even after like a year, she still can't walk on it. She just gave up on trying to work on strengthening the leg for the future, and just limped her whole life. Her non injured leg would have given out many times from carrying her weight, and she would have at least attempted to shift her weight onto her other leg. Like, how could she not?
@@easternwoyer3876 Bro, Quickmane's claws were gigantic, you don't think it would have hit a tiny little cub's eye? Well anyway, I went ahead and watched the fight again, and he did indeed claw her eye. Go to 8:02 in episode 1 and watch closely, maybe slow down the speed of the video. He's holding his paw at her head, then pulls away with a lot of blood following before quickly puncturing her leg. So I don't think it "just appeared". The amount of times I edited this in a short time just to correct myself damn-
this was a really good analysis and a good way for me to be informed of what was happening with the show without having to actually watch it and give the series views,, tyy
OH MY GOD I JUST READ THE "I HOPE SO" WEBCOMIC AND REALIZED THE ART STYLE LOOKED SIMILAR TO YOUR'S SO I LOOKED FOR THIS VIDEO AGAIN AND OH MY GOD. you did the exact same concept but better. that is amazing. i KNEW something was familiar about it
The thing about Moonstrike that kinda bugs me is, we're not told how her being trans WORKS in this world. I can understand her being trans from an outside prospective. but in universe...How does it work? If she was AMAB then she should have patches of fur around her neck ripped out to show her getting rid of her mane to alter herself so that she's more like her sisters and the gender she identifys and why would her family even still accept that? why wouldn't she have been ran off since while she might identify as a female she's still a genetically vivable male and thus potental rival for the pride. And I've seen people saying 'It's because she's a maned lioness' which, would mean Moonstrike that everyone has been misgendering Moonstrike since that would make the charicter a female to male trans-male. And if that was the case, wouldn't Moonstrike be the mane in charge of the pride since, if they identify as a male wouldn't they be driven to challenge for leadership of the pride? Basically, Moonstrike doesn't really make sence as a transcharicter because this hasn't been explained in universe and if Tribble wanted to really explore parts of their world in the little side storys maybe they could explain it.
I don't know if anyone else is bothered by this but the world of My Pride feels really empty for a series which is set in some kind of Africa-like land. We only see lions, ocassinal prey and thats it. I think that putting other animals in the background somewhere would make this world be more alive for the viewer. Even birds, bugs or small critters would do the trick.
Funny thing is, in the trailer of the series, we see african wild dogs with Nothing and young Feather, wich means the creator decided to not put them there.
They might be expensive to animate, but even a still image of wildebeest or zebras grazing in the background would be enough to ground this series to reality a bit more. Other predators are also a fact of life for lions. Can you even tell a story about wild lions without even mentioning the struggle to defend their prey from hyenas and chase cheetahs out of their territory?
@@angrykid560 They literally had to cut characters because they couldn't afford them. And the reason Nothing awkwardly stood still in episode ten was because it went over their budget
will never forget how this was always advertised for it's gay representation and cutesy romance but then you actually watch it only to find out the relationship is awful! i'd be fine with that, gay relationships are just as messy as straight ones, but narratively it's not painted as such! they always portrayed them as a cutesy power couple as if hover doesn't treat her TERRIBLY AND has more romantic chemistry with one of nothings bullies. it leaves such a sour taste in my mouth.
I really think season 1 shouldve ended with Nothing and Feather leaving the pride. Give the pride more development, so we can learn pride law and what Nothing is facing. Its very hard to keep up with the progression of the pride and what happens within it. I think a big finale wouldve been great having Nothing and Feather leaving, this way more things could be planned out.
That's a good take. The only potential problem I would have seen with that is not being able to find a balance between rushing the story and going too slowly. I feel like more development on Nothing's Pride and Pride Law/Lore in general would have helped the series a lot.
I can't believe I am saying this, but warriors treats their disabled characters so much better than this show. Before watching this, Warriors was the worst when it came to treating disabled characters in world. But at least they get something. Two of leaders are physically disabled and even though one of morally very wrong, ran their clans in the way the saw fit.
@@rockclanhawkstar1454 Brokenstar has a crooked tail, I wouldn’t really consider it a disability. It’s never shown to give him any trouble, and he was given the name Brokenkit because he was literally evil from birth and the tail was just excuse for the name. Berrynose isn’t considered disabled and he has a stub tail, not even a crooked one.
I haven't read warriors (I plan to do so though), may I ask why it's so bad when it came to treating disabled characters? Without too much spoilers if possible of course, haha. From what I understand, the world is pretty brutal in WC. Being disabled is not being able to perform exactly like everyone else (like in Nothing's case, she can run but she is at a higher risk of stumbling and is at a disadvantage in fights). It's alright for disabled characters to not be as able-bodied or as functional as everyone else, we do not find that upsetting. There is this video talking about disability in Monsters University, ya'll should check it out. It's the most accurate representation of disability I have seen, and the creator of the video puts a lot of us disabled folks thoughts into words, which a lot of us struggle to do. It's just simply great :-)
As someone who is going to be taking part in an animated series as a script writer and concept designer, I found this very informative, especially since the show is going to be tackling some controversial topics as well, and this really helped me find more efficient way to execute the story! ❤️❤️❤️
Damn, I always felt something was off about this show despite enjoying it casually. I never bothered rewatching episodes since I'm not a big fan, I only saw them around their premieres, so I never analyzed anything deeply or picked up on flaws. This was an overall intelligent and logical dissection review for me. My Pride definitely seems to be prioritizing "good reputation" over good story writing, character development, and world building, which would all natrually provide that good reputation. You constantly pitty Nothing for her awful relationships and terrible life without any progression... The antagonists are confusing, you don't know who's considered remotely sympathetic and who's "actually awful"... And the potentially fascinating lore and background is overshadowed by missing details or inconsistencies. In general, I'm definitely disappointed by every problematic thing I learned and are highly skeptical My Pride can repair itself.
Something worldbuilding-related that always bothered me in this show: If the male lions wanted to prove they rule over females, why do they maintain that the powers who rule *them* are female? I'm talking Cansu, Sunce and Asra. Historically the gender of mythological figures was often related to gender equality, as patriarchies favor male gods and vice-versa. What's stopping the manes from changing the story and claiming the gods are men too?
Your comment made me lol but it also serves as proof as to how silly some people sound when they try and argue that My Pride having an audience automatically means it's a good show. The creator got big making WC content. This is a WC adjacent show. Of course her WC fan subscriber base will eat it up. I don't know if that's the case for you personally but the bottom line is we - ourselves included - all enjoy a lot of trash because of nostalgia. Doesn't make it good. xD Jokes aside, we're also glad to hear you can enjoy the show (in a way) while also seeing our video as a resource as we intended and not as an unfair attack or personal insult. Thank you. :)
@@DetectiveCalico ayee i wasnt expecting such a nuanced reply! but yeah when I first watched this show I loved it and it (obviously) reminded me of WC and I did really eat it up. the first time I watched this video I most definitely did not come with an open mind but there are some things I really cant rebuttle after facing the facts. and yeah I do still enjoy the show in a kinda like frustrated nostalsic way, and your video is so informative and entertaining, with critques that honestly should've been made before the show got fully animated. I'm glad my lil comment made you lol as well lmao
About Nothing's name. In Warrior Cats Brightheart get ableist name from Bluestar, because of hers face injury and that name was literally seem to be brutal and Firestar changed it when he become his lead in the clan. This is from book which were written more than 10 years ago (I'm not sure, but it's on end of first WC series) and that was more progressive then this shit
Imagine being so shit at being progressive that fucking Warrior Cats can do better. Then again Tribble used to be very prominent in the Warriors fandom back in the day, maybe that's where her twisted ideas of being progressive came from.
As a bisexual autistic guy, I apologize if I don’t know what the hell I’m talking about, especially hardly being ten minutes in to the video, but while I more or less had a decent enough time with the series(trying my hardest to ignore wholly unnecessary jabs at other Lion related series I greatly enjoy), I think my biggest problem with it is that the characters seem a little too... special but also stereotyped and only existing to serve the roles they must fit without much development(aside from Nothing because she’s the main character). We need the douchebag stepdad? Quickmane. We need the overly zealous and mean mother? Powerstrike. Etc. Something about Nothing and possibly Hover being possible reincarnations of goddesses also kinda... runs me the wrong way. Like, that has the implication that their love isn’t just so, and only because the lore and history dictated it would be as such because that’s how it happened so long ago, and god forbid we give our characters individuality. Maybe I’m also being overtly critical, but I’m also not a fan of how like 98% of the male characters in this show are either sexist homophobic and socially robotic pigs, young, or dead before we got to really know them, and if Starmane’s bio is to be believed, then he didn’t even kill the previous pride leader, so why is Fire such a pariah for doing the exact opposite, when, given what we know about Powerstrike, she could’ve very easily done the same with Starmane? Is there really no other lions or lionesses that follow rules outside of pride law? If it’s supposed to be an allegory for religion, if not straight up religion, that hardly seems plausible. I’m Catholic myself, but there exists Judaism, Buddhism, Scientology, it seems silly to give these more or less regular old lions such humanistic traits, but they’ve anthropomorphized them to such a degree, that I feel it’s fair game to discuss. Watership Down kept their characters as plain old every day animals, so much so that human traits like laughter and complex problem solving are outright confusing to them, and their stories are nothing more than stories, so in that case, cutting super deep into any religious subtext they might carry wouldn’t work as well. Also, not to say anything of Fire’s sudden hatesink other than we really need Nothing to have even more enemies aside from Feather and Rain at the time because... she’s disabled so the world has to hate her? That’s... not very good commentary. I’m not sure if these are the words im looking for, but I’ve gone back and forth with this series for a while now and I just needed to spew, I apologize once again if I said anything out of the ordinary
I know it has nothing to do with it, but I don't understand how the heck she has a scar that covers half of her face, yet her eye was not damaged in any way and functions normally, while three scratches on her leg left her incapacitated for life, like they don't even look that deep :/ I legitimately want to understand the logic there. The other thing is that I don't understand why taking things from real life, like the fact that lions kill the cubs of other males that are not their own, but then start a religion that makes no sense. In that case it would make more sense for the mother to have escaped with her cubs (another thing that lioness make), instead of forcing an alliance. Also males take care of the cubs, is safer, is so weird seeing how they leave their cubs with only one lioness. Also, there are videos of hyenas that survived with half their bodies paralyzed, lions that were missing an eye like the villain and were able to survive normally, believing that because a lioness can't put weight on one paw it will makes her useless is pretty dumb, especially when lions hunt in prides.
They seemed to have known males took care of the Cubs in the first episode, then forgot for every episode after, since Starmane was the only adult there when they got attacked
Yeah, they could’ve made it scarred over like that one medicine cat in Warrior Cats. I do kinda disagree with the religious aspect and a real pride behavior. I think you can mix it up a bit if done correctly. Like in Warrior cats they’re just normal cats living in the forest but believe in star clan and stuff.
SINCE YOU ASKED ABOUT SALT! Salt is actually important to animals as well as humans! In fact, humans used to follow animal trails to salt to find it. Nutritionally, animals have to have salt, it's very important! Carnivores tend to get salt from eating their prey so perhaps they are not as likely to go looking for salt deposits, it's true. BUT, using human expressions in fictional animal stories is usually better than ham-fistedly trying to work in made-up animal lingo. This series' genre isn't the kind of world-building fantasy that handles animal language (like Watership Down), so it works much better for the show's flavor to just preserve human sayings. And a western-inspired accent on this character fits very nicely with a phrase like "worth your salt". For an example of terrible phrases ham-fistedly shoved into a series (at least to me personally lol) I could perhaps talk about in Lion King 2 when the lions say "following in Scar's pawprints" instead of just saying footsteps. It just sounds off and cringey. (Notice the original Lion King film doesn't do this.). Anyway, thanks for coming to my Ted talk and if you want a REALLY interesting book on salt, I highly recommend Mark Kurlansky's "Salt: A History"
I'd probably have found it less distracting if they were goats or elephants LOL I think it would work best if she skipped the phrase all together and used something around the lines of "Any prideless with a lick of sense would've dumped that cub weeks ago." Or something, there's multiple general phrases.
I honestly would've much rather liked Nothing leaving with Hover. There was nothing in the Pride for Nothing to stay. Especially after her grandmother died.
A little thing that upsets me greatly about My Pride is the fact that they try to make it look as if Nothing is burdening others or that she’s at fault for something. I struggle with mental health issues and have struggled with mental health issues for years and years and I’ve dealt with this shit so much. I struggle with self-harm and I’ve been told about how I hurt others by hurting myself and that I’m selfish. I’ve even been told by a past therapist about how if I succeeded at my last attempt, that my boyfriend would be destroyed by it and she said, verbatim, “ It would be all your fault.” It’s always about everyone else and how I’m hurting them. That’s always the reason why I should live, because I’d ruin the lives of others by taking my own. It’s always about everyone else. It’s never about the person suffering. And yet everyone asks “Why do you care what others think of you?” Uh, HELLO?! Because that’s all that people seem to think I’m worth. Seeing PowerStrike act as if Nothing’s injury is a burden on her or that Nothing is selfish somehow or has done something wrong, genuinely angered me.
@ashurnonaurbiz2968 I'm sorry about your struggles. It's terrible having this sort of disrespectful garbage thrown back in your face like this. Also, not to overstep, but I hope you can find a new therapist. I know what she's probably trying to do, but that's not always helpful. But yeah Powerstrike being redeemed after all this is awful. She should have been properly called out by Hover of all people, that would've at least told the audience she was wrong for believing such things. But instead the show opts to make you feel bad for her, especially because later we find out she feels bad for it. Gross.
A thing I wanted to add is one of my fan characters is in this show, she is shown to be along side moonstrike, her name is moondust (she’s the blind one) I was very confused when I saw that they added a ear piece to her ear because in my drawing of her she doesn’t have one, and I was confused as to why they would just...randomly add something like that to a character who didn’t have one in the first place? I never saw anywhere that said that prideless lions all wore ear pieces, would of been nice to see that expanded on- like why? And how?
Yeah but there should have been a line addressing that like "My mate defeated you the last time you challenged him, but you expect Mr to believe you won fairly this time? When you brought these prideless with you now?" Just something to convey why she was rejecting him as the new mane instead of leaving it so open. I had the same criticism when the episode came out.
This is like a bad roleplay with someone who loves having dramatic moments but sucks at buildups and making them look like they make sense so the whole thing is tedious.
tHANK YOU! YOU PUT SO MUCH OF MY THOUGHTS INTO WORDS, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT CAME TO NOTHING'S NAME! I've had people arguing with me about how adorably wholesome Feather is for "changing the meaning of her name" and every single time I've seen people react with tears or "awws" and I never understood why, it all felt so wrong. When I first saw it myself I felt so disgusted. What you've said in this video is a relief. The name means what it means, nothing. It's to make her feel worthless and it is in fact a punishment that her own mother gave her for the rest of her life. Episode 9 and 10 really ruined the series for me, especially at Feather's speech. This was really bad to do in a series so popular. An overwhelming amount of people will get the wrong idea because people heard it from their favorite character. And the only character who respected the protagonist when it came to her horrible name turned into a villain in the end. It really hurt to see. She should have been allowed to change her name, and even then I wanted to see her OWN feelings to it. Not Feather's, not Fire's. Hers. I would have understood from her own perspective of self worth but instead we got two characters making her decision for her. I like the animation of the show and the work other people put into it, but the writing really went downhill and this series depends on that.
Honestly Nothing should have just won the fight against fire. Presumably, the lionesses formed a pride so they can survive better. Because they think that a mane protecting them is a good thing. Because "males are stronger then females" and nothing could have shown them that that's incorrect, that prides are flawed and it could have inspired the pride to rethink pride law. Ofcourse it wouldn't have solved all the other problems but atleast it would have been something. It would have been the message and probably goal of the show and would have given the thought "yeah maybe something can be changed" And yes, Nothing could have won a fight against fire. First of all, fire isn't a good fighter. And nothing survived on the stretch with feather alone, hunted, and every time we saw her hunt she wasn't worse then everyone else, even with her injury. So why shouldn't she be able to fight? Especially so filled with anger and adrenalin. And her jaw is still perfectly working, just tackle fire and bite him. He doesn't have to die, leaving is enough for the plot. It also would have been Nothing fighting back. Fire was so abusive the whole episode and nothing didn't really stand up for herself. It would have turned this suicidal moment into an empowering one. IF you want this empathetic moment with ghost, sure, you can still have it, feather is dead. But don't make Nothing fight fire because she is suicidal. Because that moment sucked so much I hate it and it could have been fixed so easily.
Thats one thing that kinda bugs me in the show is the females cowered to males numerous times but like.. Have you seen real lionesses? They do not take sh*t from males they're insanely fierce, I've seen males run from females plenty of times cause they wont risk the injury
@@liveslex5581 True, often an old male driven out just starves to death, and yeah you see males target eachothers nuts a lot 😬 you also sometimes see females fight with the males or some will leave the pride to avoid their cubs being killed
@@goblinofsharksnacks Makes you wonder. And this is a just an idea: Do you think one of MoonStrike’s Lionesses is Hover’s Mother who was pregnant with some Mane’s or No-Mane’s litter, left to the stretch, gave bird to how many # of cubs, some may have died for some reason but Hover was the last to survive. Then when Hover grew up and became independent her mother went back to MoonStrike’s Territory and rejoined her fellow females? P
Thank you.
Yikes- Bad sign if the creator herself is not willing to listen to the genuine issues that people have brought up about her own show 😬
so i myself am a disabled individual. it is VERY BAD OPTICS on the creators behalf that the person to "reclaim" nothing's name on her behalf is feather. a very not disabled individual. if it was nothing reclaiming her name and owning it, saying "i'm not afraid of anything" i would have gotten behind that. but nah. cant have the female lead showing any degree of autonomy i guess.
It means, “your family may not like you, they may say they hate you, but even so, they are still you family”
It’s eh-
@@itsnothanss Paraphrasing: "if your family is abusive, you still have an obligation to care about them, because (biological ofc, found family who?) faaamiiilyyy is what REALLY matters :3"
Bleh ;-;
Ya that’s like such a bad message to any person of age. I was abused mentally and physically by my family and I totally disagree with that message. Oof
I forgot about that part. Now I really am worried that Nothing will be treated like a bitch if she doesn't forgive her family for all the horrible things that they did to her.
That quote just screams red flag to me, wtf
imagine if in Warriors cats, Firestar didn’t change the name from Brightpaw to Brightheart, and she remained with "Lostface" so someone says _"this is your name, is that you are, you don’t have to change because you give him a good meaning :)"_
Man would be the worst
Yeah. I get Tribble wanted it to be a twist for her to keep her name, but... it really doesn't do much good.
very good comparisons, I will never get over that they choose to keep her abilist name. like. literary how? how did tribble think that would be impovering?
Also, remember how Cloudtail, Brightheart's mate, completely refused to use the horrible name Bluestar gave her, and even assured her in the book that he would NEVER use it, as well as constantly badgering Firestar to fix it almost immediately after he became leader? While Hover is shown having absolutely zero objection to using it, and the only comment she has to give about it is MOCKING and LAUGHING at it.

"When your protagonist has become popular, changing their name can be a bit weird"
Looks at Tribble's extensive history with the Warrior Cats series, where characters changing their names over the course of their lives is literally baked into the worldbuilding (and changing an awful ableist name into one that's not demeaning is a plot point that, despite the rampant ableism in many of the Warriors books, is actually handled decently well)
...yeah, I don't think tribble can claim even that excuse for not changing Nothing's name. Not that it held much water anyway, as you pointed out
Yeah, my thoughts exactly.

Love it. 👊
I found it pretty insightful too. I kinda hope Tribble sees it.
I hope more people involved see this, and use it as a teaching tool to better the series. Loved your voice work, btw! If I can certainly see myself voice claiming a character of mine with yours!
The fact that you read the Watership down novels instead of just watching the movie automatically makes you my favorite voice in the series 😂
@@chickennuggetpaw HOORAY I WIN
It’s one of my favorite novels! Always found the awesome pacing and character development impossible to replicate in movie form
Just wanted to say your voice is wonderful for Ghost and you’re doing amazing!
C'mon
IKR
the first time I watched this I was just surprised Hover did that!
Like Hover u bitch how u
Could u just stand from the sidelines and do jackshit like what the hell is wrong with u-
I've seen this irl with young couples a lot, hoping that hover will learn from it and change her attitude now that she's suffered for it, but if she csnt grow and learn then 😬
@@soniquefus I feel like this is somewhat (just a tad) down to show style too, like when something happens between 2 charas the rest are kinda cut out, like when feather was attacked by fire nothing was stock still, possibly to cut down on animation and time
But yeah, it baffled me how hover and even power strike love her yet did nothing when quickmane went to kill her :/
Can I just say I love you for the acknowledgement of Hover and Nothing's toxic relationship? I felt it early on, but I knew that ship sunk as soon as Hover did NOTHING and watched as Nothing's life was threatened, as she was beaten. No matter what, if you truly love or care about someone, your not going to stand there and do nothing. The worse part she could do afterwards was blame her and say it was her fault. She victim blamed her, and that was the grossest, sickest thing. If the creators wanted to give conflict, they did it in a way to ensure nobody would ever look at this couple with love, instead with a curdling feeling in their stomach. :/
I ship Nothing with emotional support and happiness.
I'm surprised this was never addressed!!

Nothing: *trips once*
Powerstrike: You failed.
Me: oh, and you haven't?
@@DetectiveCalico honestly that sounds like a great plotline and kind of disappointing they didn't do that
also, a term i'm surprised you didn't use (maybe because it's too vulgar lol) is "trauma porn". trauma porn is defined as a bunch of horrible things happening to someone (Nothing) and exploiting their trauma for shock value or to make the audience feel bad for the victim.
so many bad things happen to Nothing that her suicidal ideation is honestly believable; everyone she loves either leaves, dies, or abuses her to the point that the question as to why she hasn't laid down and died yet is valid to ask. there's only so much trauma someone can go through before complete shutdown- which could be seen as her becoming meek and submissive (only sometimes though!), but as you said, her writing is inconsistent enough that this can't be relied on. the character seems to have a supernatural ability to just keep enduring abuse on top of abuse for the sake of, again, shock value and a need to make the audience feel bad for Nothing.
it's not believable and it's not really particularly interesting. it just makes the viewer feel uncomfortable and bored, because the traumatic events are dumped without any real emphasis, realism, or nuance. i haven't really watched the series in its entirety, but it reads and feels like... well, trauma porn.
Personally I only enjoy trauma porn when there’s a happy ending. (And when it’s well written.)
OC abuse
It is really hard for me to criticize anyone who is willing to put in that much work in a self animation. But how analytically you break this down is incredible and I love it. This video is awesome.
That's nice of you to mention! As someone who has been doing a similar thing, I can't help but look up to the effort and the dedication Tribble has put into making her self-animated stories. They have flaws but glad you can appreciate that.

Pfffffft
F them

You have a great point. I hope that she gets a redemption arc, however; she’s an interesting character.
But we all know Nothing will definitely forgive her as every sweet-hearted main character. And it's really sad. Powerstrike doesn't deverse forgiveness from her children and expecially from Nothing.
@@ashleypisarts maybe she could be forgiven as like a character? Or something like that by Nothing. She shouldn’t be forgiven as a mother, however.

It's literally terfy narrative. On purpose or not it really looks bad
You're a woman, lol

@@Limbolots0 I agree 100%, I didn’t like going into the comments on my pride, the show is fine but the writing needs to be written on
Sympathetic villains need to be handled really carefully. If you don’t write them well, then it just comes off as “Protagonists are the bad guys abusing the villain until the villain does something evil to remind us they are the villain” or “Villian is a terrible person but the show keeps shoving how sad they are in our face until we hate them even more.”
ex. Mapleshade
I’m just imagining the scene with Fire and Nothing fighting being redone. Where instead of Nothing saying “my name.. is Nothing!”
She says something along the lines of:
“My name.. is not sister.. and my name is not Nothing. My name.. is Everything. I am everything pride law is not. I’m everything you’re not, Fire. I’m better, and bigger then all this. Be kind of a mouthful during a battle
Oh gosh I’d love to see THAT in a My Pride reanimated map
Pretty lit
(I just have so many questions.)
Despite Quickmane being half blind leading to his death from Proud, never receives any ableist comments or treatment due to his own injury and while I am NOT AT ALL saying that ableism is a good thing, I feel like if you are gonna have it in this story, the MANES should get harshly treated as well if not more so, if they have injuries that prevent them from doing the ONE thing their lion society role is- and that is protect the pride.
Anyways, I could rant all day about this show's wasted potential but I won't- this is such a great analysis video and I love hearing insight on how to treat such topics in media, especially when advertising your show as LGBT and Disabled Friendly or empowering to those groups.
So much potential here
Thats literally what I thought was gonna happen after I watched the first episode. Oh how quickly that expectation was crushed lol

When I was originally watching My Pride, I definitely felt something wasn’t right with the story, but due to that I was only watching the episodes as they came out, I only remembered the major plot points of the previous episode(s).

Technically neither were the non-disabled lions either

@@unchartedraider7547 I think they're aware of that.
And as for that big yikes moment where Nothing just kinda embraces her shitty ableist name, there were like a million thoughts I had where that could have been a lot less...gross.

I want to read this now.
So I'm just gonna write a fanfic au LMAO
Nothing being Lite’s incarnation would be interesting too.
I honestly didn't expect anyone to read my reply and I love all the responses
In good "strong and independent woman"-shows we also have good male characters, in bad ones we got goodie-good females (Powerbottom, Hover and Farfall are terrible and abusive, but author try to make them sympathetic characters) and aBuSiVe, MaNiPuLaTiVe, cRuEl males
yeah-
i just realized Lite isn't the first time tribble wrote a male character who flew over the edge after a female character rejected them
*cough cough Rune from cow of the wild cough cough*
i have noticed a trend in tribble's writing where she makes the female characters more sympathetic, and the male characters are demonized, killed off, or forgotten about.
like, Fire was one of the FEW living lions that felt any sympathy towards nothing... and they turned him into a murderous asshole. meanwhile, Farleap and Powerstrike, two of nothing's biggest abusers, are given redemption arcs and shown to just be a couple of sadgirls who miss their sister/daughter and was only a prick because waaaaaah Power lost her mate! and waaaaah mommy didn't give Farleap enough hugs!
also there was no reason Tangle had to be killed off, there's a hot take for you. he was another male character that actually seemed to feel sympathy towards nothing, feeling bad that she got a name like "Nothing", even calling it "a tough one" and was even impressed that she stood up against a no-mane... only for him to be killed off-screen...
@@puppyhowler i do totally agree that fire's character arc is rushed and sloppy, and pretty much the rest of the men in the shows are jerks
I was just thinking about how similar Lite was to Rune. Doesn’t make me like either of them more tho, since both were brutes who murdered innocent people just because “they were heartbroken”
But please, if Ghost’s character pulls a 180 I swear to god I will riot!
Now that you mention it, nothing and luna are pretty much the same character
Oh my gosh I never noticed that. I used to do the same thing and use the same personalities over and over again in my old stories
@@Indigoharpy SAME it's not the worst thing ever but it IS a sign of amateur writing, something you can actively work to improve with analysis and someone editing your work. Tribble doesn't want any of that with her high school stories, though.
Man, you should've been the series script doctor. Your suggestions are way better than the final product that we got.

Yes and yet Warriors still did the "Disabled character receives an ableist name" plotline better, by giving the character a proper name.
this whole show is basically “I can excuse child murder but I draw the line at homophobia”
Exactly! I liked it too. Because although I adore My Pride, no show is without criticism. So it’s good that these things are being addressed.
I just realized that My Pride had a plot point similar to Warrior Cats.
When the kid tells her "Don't change your name! It means so much more now, Nothing is a great name!"
When the kits were attacked at adderrock, one of their faces was torn up.
That's not the only plot point similar to WC either, Farleap even has a Blossomfall moment in episode 7 lol it's completely made up, but they tried (they didn't even try)
"Cansu light your path" is just "May Starclan light your path" but it makes way less sense.
So that’s more of the My Pride way of going about it, except it’s never even mentioned to be a shit name by anyone involved.
worst part is that the kits were actually adults but bluestar was too emo to give them their warrior names
i agree with the point of Lite actually winning even though Kyoga said he'd never win, he created a whole way a life that has lasted for generations that every lion has come to accept and believe in to the point that everyone is a brain dead jerk now and the world is caca, seems like a win for Lite to me.
Instead of leaving the abusive part of the name it could be something like “Fearless”.
@@AAaaA-pg3rp True. That takes care of Feather's little hissy fit about her name and rejecting the idea that she is worthless because of her injury altogether.
@@BridaUlv LMAO I CANT-
@@BridaUlv Feather completely pushed aside the fact that it was a reminder that “she is completely useless” and “her mother hates her”
@@AAaaA-pg3rp Reading over my comment again, I realize I worded that wrong.
I laughed when Hover said "It must be hard"
She was like Zuko telling Sokka "That's rough buddy" after Sokka told "My first girlfriend turned into a moon"

PFFFTT- THAT IS SO FUNNY-
Didn't know I could be so entertained by a 2.5+ hour long video about a series I've never watched
Agreed.
The subplot about lion homophobia had me rolling, especially since homosexual behaviours have been observed in real lions _multiple times_ 💀
If the fans weren't so uptight about "gritty realism" then it would be fine and not funny, but like...this is very much a human construct lmao
Here are the listed reasons why male cats occasionally mate with kittens:
In such cases, mounting behavior may be used as a way to intimidate or establish dominance over the other cat.«)
This could be why your male cat is attempting to mate with your kitten, as the kitten is entering estrus and is in the presence of a sexually active male.«
And considering your statement that „some individuals
do mate with pleasure in mind”:
»Dogs and cats are not like people when it comes to sex. They don't cycle the same way and there's no evidence, behaviorally or otherwise, that sexual activity brings them any specific pleasure akin to orgasm [...]«
Nothing you said is grounded-or at least you're giving me nothing more to work with than your own conclusions which could be easily proven wrong with a couple of google searches.
He continues to say that being exclusively gay is ›exceptionally rare‹ in the animal kingdom.«
However, it is a fact that their sexual behavior is often misinterpreted by humans.
The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals® (ASPCA) suggests that mounting is less about sex and more about playing, releasing stress or showing dominance.«
I hope I could help you understand the topic a bit more. Like I said, the majority is uneducated when it comes to the topic of animal sexuality-or in this specific case the sexuality of cats-because they keep looking at it through the human lense.

@@c.s2193OH, MY GOD, AT LEAST SOMEONE SAID THAT!
I have a lot of favorite quotes:
“GOD CAME DOWN FROM THE HEAVENS TO TELL YOU THAT THE BIBLE IS WRONG AND YOU WERE ALL ‘I don’t know, the Bible makes a good case.’”
“You stand before your pride, your main, and your cunt chief.”
Every “fraternizing with an outsider.”
“The sheer level of inconsistency in this one clip gave me an aneurysm.”
“The couple that the show’s Twitter shows off Iike a fun fair attraction.”
“Yeet the little shit into the next dimension for all I care.”
She would not have survived, and if she did, those little scars she got would not be the end result
Let's just ignore the false logic and non-realistic outcomes of that fight, and focus on how her life should have been after that.
Agreed, but I once got a scar covering my entire eyelid. I still have 2 eyes. Maybe it's different for lions and lion ckaws

They didn't do this because they couldn't afford to. I'm sure they would have otherwise

Fair enough. Money-pending, I hope they are able to expand the world a bit more in the next season (if there is one.)
will never forget how this was always advertised for it's gay representation and cutesy romance but then you actually watch it only to find out the relationship is awful! i'd be fine with that, gay relationships are just as messy as straight ones, but narratively it's not painted as such! they always portrayed them as a cutesy power couple as if hover doesn't treat her TERRIBLY AND has more romantic chemistry with one of nothings bullies. it leaves such a sour taste in my mouth.
@@raxid5950 yeah youve got a really good point there! Being too slow would be another problem
I can't believe I am saying this, but warriors treats their disabled characters so much better than this show.
Before watching this, Warriors was the worst when it came to treating disabled characters in world. But at least they get something. Two of leaders are physically disabled and even though one of morally very wrong, ran their clans in the way the saw fit.
which leaders?
@@monokuma_5540 crookedstar and Brokenstar.
As someone who is going to be taking part in an animated series as a script writer and concept designer, I found this very informative, especially since the show is going to be tackling some controversial topics as well, and this really helped me find more efficient way to execute the story! ❤️❤️❤️
What is it, if you don't mind me asking?
Same here, I only watch them when they premiere and only really pay attention to the mythology so if there’s anything really bad I never notice it
I honestly only watched it because YT wouldn’t stop showing me ads of it-
Something worldbuilding-related that always bothered me in this show: If the male lions wanted to prove they rule over females, why do they maintain that the powers who rule *them* are female? I'm talking Cansu, Sunce and Asra. Historically the gender of mythological figures was often related to gender equality, as patriarchies favor male gods and vice-versa. What's stopping the manes from changing the story and claiming the gods are men too?
i rewatch my pride for nostalgia and then come here for that slap of reality
Your comment made me lol but it also serves as proof as to how silly some people sound when they try and argue that My Pride having an audience automatically means it's a good show. The creator got big making WC content. This is a WC adjacent show. Of course her WC fan subscriber base will eat it up. I don't know if that's the case for you personally but the bottom line is we - ourselves included - all enjoy a lot of trash because of nostalgia. Doesn't make it good. xD

Unrelated, but I love the way you write your comments :) they're so articulated, you seem so nice too ❤
I know it has nothing to do with it, but I don't understand how the heck she has a scar that covers half of her face, yet her eye was not damaged in any way and functions normally, while three scratches on her leg left her incapacitated for life, like they don't even look that deep :/ I legitimately want to understand the logic there.
Thank u for doing your research cause I would've just been confused asf😂
Gross.

I never saw anywhere that said that prideless lions all wore ear pieces, would of been nice to see that expanded on- like why? And how?
I feel like I need to point out the fact that Moonstrike knew Fire didn't kill Barkmane in fair combat. Once she seen Fether she knew Fire cheated.
Yeah but there should have been a line addressing that like
"My mate defeated you the last time you challenged him, but you expect Mr to believe you won fairly this time? When you brought these prideless with you now?"
Just something to convey why she was rejecting him as the new mane instead of leaving it so open. I had the same criticism when the episode came out.

I like the animation of the show and the work other people put into it, but the writing really went downhill and this series depends on that.
also the fact that even if Feather and Nothing know this lame ass bullshit about Nothing's name, no one else will so it's pretty pointless
It would have been the message and probably goal of the show and would have given the thought "yeah maybe something can be changed"
And yes, Nothing could have won a fight against fire.
@@liveslex5581 I already love you for stating out basic Lion Biology
@@goblinofsharksnacks Makes you wonder. And this is a just an idea:
Do you think one of MoonStrike’s Lionesses is Hover’s Mother who was pregnant with some Mane’s or No-Mane’s litter, left to the stretch, gave bird to how many # of cubs, some may have died for some reason but Hover was the last to survive. Then when Hover grew up and became independent her mother went back to MoonStrike’s Territory and rejoined her fellow females? P
@@princessironlove4508 yeah could be, though if thats the case her mother may be one who doesn't believe in the pride law either, a potential ally
Don't know who you are or why you were recommended but thank you for the 2 and over half hour of background noise about gay cartoon lions. I enjoy.
The best character in My Pride who doesn't have any fault and is absolutely gold and no one can make me think otherwise is:
Scruffy
meadow and root, too. they’re just vibing
