    "Data aging out of the role" never made sense to me since it was established in TNG that Data could set his body to "simulate" an aging appearance so as to be able to "fit in" better with the living individuals he associated with.

    • @andromidius
      @andromidius ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Appearance isn't the issue. No matter what Data looks like he's still an android with superhuman strength and reflexes and endurance. Brent Spiner simply couldn't keep up with the physicality required for the role, and relying on body doubles and cgi only goes so far.

    • @Majere613
      @Majere613 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      If I'd been writing it and needed to keep Data around, I'd've had his outer skin get almost completely destroyed whilst saving Picard in Nemesis, then replace Spiner with a new actor, with Data explaining that he felt the need to evolve his appearance away from being an imitation of his creator. Whilst Spiner's performance is iconic, as we've seen it's very possible to imitate it and in time the new actor would bring their own spin to the role.

      @TheIrtar ปีที่แล้ว +49

      I tried to watch Disco. I really, honestly did.
      The show is a disaster and I'm surprised it's so high on the list.
      The point I finally gave up was in the fourth season. There was some sort of disaster going on and, for once, the bridge crew started working together to come up with a solution that didn't involve Michael. Then Saru talks up and says to just wait because Michael will know what to do. And everyone is just like 'Oh yeah, how dare we try to have our own autonomy other than nodding agreeably to Michael'.
      It is the only Star Trek I can think of that doesn't have a ship and a crew. It has a main character. And that main character is inconsistent as a character and almost feels like a Fan Fiction insert in terms of characterization.

    I think you had to have lived through all of the shows in order to appreciate each in its place. I was a riveted 6-year old when TOS premiered on NBC and I have watched the entire progression of the various series and movies in real time. I think this list is not bad; however, I would have rated TOS a bit more highly. Again, you had to be alive and watching television 1966 when TOS came out to fully appreciate what it accomplished within the constraints of the time. I do agree with the #1 ranking of DS9, also appreciate Lower Decks, and would put Voyage Home followed by First Contact as the best Trek movies, yes, even before Wrath of Khan.

    • @claytonberg721
      @claytonberg721 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't live through the premier of TOS but I lived through the rest of them. That's probably the main reason I rank DS9 lower than in my personal list of likes than any other series of the Berman era. Syndication, depending on where you lived, killed DS9. I vividly remember the beginning of season 6. They aired them all in order up until after favor the bold. Instead of sacrifice of angels they aired rocks and shoals again. Then the next week was a football game or something? And the week after that they aired you are cordially invited. I guess they retook the station? I didn't see sacrifice of angels until the next year. By season 7 I had given up, I couldn't follow the story and they needlessly killed Jadzia.
      I would love to be able to erase it from my memory and watch it the way millennials have. Also DS9 is undoubtedly better than voyager and enterprise. But it gets too dark and goes places I'm not overly always comfortable with. Voyager is not the best star trek series by to say the least, but it's the one I watch the most. I love the cast, I love the characters, it never fails to make me smile.
      Because of the modern 10 eps a season format, no series will have as many good episodes as DS9. TNG is the first and only time star trek became must see TV while it was in first run, when it was at it's best it was better than DS9, but DS9 didn't have a season as bad as season 7 of TNG, much less season 1 of TNG.

      Excellent! Thinking of the same. I was 20 when it first screened in my area on Sept. 12, 1966. Yes, it does help to see them in their respective 'time zones'. TOS seems kind of clunky, campy at times, certainly with the scantly-cladded 'oh-la-la ladies' with their ridiculous hairdos, all to draw in horny 14-17 year old boys. But TOS was bold, so different from Sci Fi of those days with at times, really interesting with thoughtful themes, plots. To me, Discovery, Picard, and especially Strange New Worlds seems to me to be excessively 'too busy', brashy at times. But, it may/probably resonate to Millennials, Gen Z with their close affinity to tech (not all of them, I know) and brought up in a world very different from my youth. This, I think, might be part of that fabric of 'subjectivism'.

    The genius of DS9 is that it's different. Whilst I love most of trek (including disco, I can look past the teary bit and enjoy 10C as an extragalactric high-on-karadshev scale non-humanoid civilisation). DS9 didn't just have a great cast and characters, but it also made you think. Everything was relatable. The cardassians as a resource-poor nation that out of pure desperation goes to war, gets knocked down, but instead of getting "past" itself and getting help, there's elements that seek back former glory. The cardassians are a tragic people, beautifully written. Even Dukat, while obviously insane at the end (but with a reason) is relatable. The Dominion is another beast. The fact that their power is introduced by blowing up something equivalent to a hero ship is scary. But the revelation of who is behind the Dominion, and why they do it, ties back beautifully to some of the main characters. Even the Section31/Romulans are very nicely interwoven. Whilst Rodenberry would probably disagree on some of it, even he can't deny himself a few 'badmirals' once in a while. So all things considered... DS9's morally gray starfleet ánd federation are great, as it feeds back into the fear the founders have. The only thing I wish had a bit more fleshing out and feedback is the whole prophets-thing. Wish we would've known more of them. Who they were/are, their nature, etc... Guess I'm too much Dax-like to just accept that they "are of bajor".

    Prodigy is the true sleeper of the franchise, IMO, and every episode of the back half has made the show better and better. It is THE one of the five series currently on air (Nov 2022) that leaves me with awe and wonder and joy and makes me feel the way the older series did in the 90s when *I* was a kid.
    I know some "serious" fans automatically want to skip it because it's targeted more towards general and family audiences (note: this is NOT a "kid show", heck, there are some moments in their Borg ep that rival even their most horrifying TNG/First Contact/VOY depictions) - the first few episodes are rough around the edges, almost somewhat deliberately, but if you can survive S1 of any other Trek, the first few eps of Prodigy are a breeze comparatively. Everything from the Kobayashi Maru onwards is sheer brilliance, and Time Amok is probably the best time shenanigans AND best disaster episode that *any* Trek series has done

    • @rpgspree

      I too was skeptical about how Prodigy was going to approach that age bracket, either swing low and be mind-numbingly dull or swing high to be relatively enjoyable by just about any age. I'd ignored the Star Wars animated series for a long time due to the same fear that they'd low-balled the writing like Phantom Menace. When even some adults who didn't have children suggested giving Clone Wars a go, I did. It started off a bit weak but got stronger over the seasons and finished as a damn fine show. Luckily Prodigy took more than a few notes from their approach to storytelling for a broad audience. It started off fairly strong out of the gate and just gets better. Sure, the writing isn't Shakespeare, but solid storytelling doesn't require flowery prose.

    I can't rank the shows and the movies together as they're different animals, with one an outgrowth of the other (unless there's ever a Kelvinverse TV series). But here's mine, from best to worst:
    FILMS: Voyage Home, First Contact, Wrath of Khan, Beyond, Search for Spock, Motion Picture (from my formative years as a Trekkie so it gets a lot of leeway with me), Undiscovered Country, Insurrection, 2009, Into Darkness, Generations, Nemesis, Final Frontier
    TV: Strange New Worlds, Lower Decks, Deep Space Nine (a 3-way tie with those), Next Generation and Original Series (also pretty much tied), Discovery, Animated, Prodigy, Enterprise ,Voyager, Picard. Can't really count Short Treks as it doesn't feel like a TV series but rather a series of shorts, like the MCU One-Shot short films, and they feel like a thing all to themselves or at least should be broken up as extensions of the above listed shows.
    I love them all, but not all equally. Voyager, Picard and Enterprise have great episodes and frustrating episodes. Discovery's Klingons look awful. Generations and Insurrection have good stuff but have weird issues galore, 2009 took 3 viewings before I could decide if I liked it. Into Darkness was good but really didn't need to be made. Nemesis has good stuff but was mostly relentlessly and depressingly grim in tone. And Final Frontier... some good things, sure, but I gotta be in the right mood to watch it because, yeah, it's bad as a whole.

    Couple notes. First, on The Animated Series: I found myself enjoying it way more listening to it as a radio drama with some visuals -- honestly the storytelling is pretty tight and approaching it that way gets around the dated animation. I actually enjoy it as much or more than TOS this way.
    Second, on Lower Decks: my sister (who is also a big Star Trek fan) and her husband (who is not very familiar with the franchise) both watch Lower Decks together. And, honestly it appears to hold up well even if you don't catch any of the deep references. I really think they balanced things right in that one. (It also gives them something to talk about after each ep.)
    Third, on Picard and Discovery both: I enjoy them quite a bit, but the main thing offputting is how their serialized and tense nature made it very hard to differentiate one episode from the next (surprising since I loved the arcs in DS9 so much, but even during theDominion War there was time for a friendly game of baseball).

    I am glad you included the animated series. Granted it was poor animation and only half hour shows, but within those limitations it did very well. Spock's mild romance I found much more convincing that implied future sex. My favorite Star Trek of all time after emoting about it? The animated "Yesteryear" where an older Spock meets a young Spock when he was a child.

      Yesteryear is a truly great episode, not only of TAS, but of all Trek. It won’t nudge out most of the other truly great episodes of DS9 or TNG (or now, SNW), for me, but it deserves to be mentioned in any list of great Trek episodes.

    So far I agree with you 100%.
    I think that the casting for the 2009 film was incredibly well done.
    The voice inflection of the actor playing Bones was spot on. It’s one thing to have someone look like a loved and well known character, but that they are also able to really capture the mannerisms and voice intonations is wonderful.
    That said, I thought that the Scotty character was a bit too thin, but yes, regardless it was really well done.
    Not an easy cast to recreate and with the size of the fandom...could have gone horribly wrong.
    When it came out, I remember being so nervous about watching it. I just didn’t want to be disappointed and the stakes we incredibly high.
    I must have asked a dozen people for their opinion (sans spoilers) before I watched it 😂
    anyway, thanks again for sharing your thoughts and take care.

      I agree on the casting - that's why I found it so depressing that the story didn't work for me at all. Most of all I never could wrap my head around Kelvin-Spock befriending Kelvin-Kirk just because Prime-Spock said so. That's just not how friendship and trust work.

    Though, I’m a bit perplexed by your interpretation that Discovery’s chief criticism is it’s diverse cast.
    Sure, Discovery seems to be Trek’s most obvious attempt to “check all the viewership boxes”. But representation is important. It’s how you write those diverse characters that might undermine their importance.
    I think Discovery’s biggest problems - and consequently, ones the show never recovered from - are a general lack of thoughtful storytelling and the show’s continued and flagrant disregard for any understanding of what actually made people love episodic Star Trek.
    They’re actually the same problems that hurt Picard season 1 & 2.

    I'm up to #6 on the list as Voyager. I'm suspecting that, given Seán's affinity for DS9, that DS9 will appear at the top of the list. I rank DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise as my all-time favorites. I'm enjoying Discovery and Strange New Worlds, but Prodigy is still kind of up in the air for me.

    Prodigy is perhaps the gold standard for kid-friendly entry points to IPs aimed primarily at the over-12s. No oversimplification of it's core values, minimal telling over showing - tho advancements in CGI animation admittedly makes showing anything the writers can imagine easier with every passing year.
