The Starfleet officer rank system is based on the US Navy system where Commodore is a full-fledged military rank between Captain and Rear Admiral, that is assigned only during time of war. Sisko was at Lt. Commander though during Wolf 359 and his transfer to Utopia Planitia likely slowed down his development. But he was a single parent at the time and grieving the loss of his wife so being closer to home was probably what he needed. He didn't want to move Jake to Bajor and take command of DS9 though. But obviously that corresponds to his rank of full Commander and then we say his development from there.

Sure, Archer said “We’re new at this” and “We’re new in this neighborhood “ and “We’re just exploring” a bit too many times in the first two seasons, but I still love him and the crew of Enterprise NX-01 all the same.

Considering there’s a painting of the Enterprise D and a model of the Stargazer in his ready room, I think the show runners wanted to hint that Picard may have been in command of that space station at some point. It would have been a good way to explain what he did in the nine years between the Stargazer and the Enterprise.

    What you have to remember that just as in the real Navy (upon which Star Trek’s rank system is based), there is the RANK of CAPTAIN and the POSITION of CAPTAIN. The rank itself is a higher rank but it doesn’t guarantee that you will achieve the CAPTAINCY of a vessel or station or outpost. Another term for CAPTAIN (referring to the POSITION not the RANK), is COMMANDING OFFICER (or C.O.). So you can be a CAPTAIN-COMMANDING OFFICER but NOT hold the RANK of CAPTAIN. This happens all the time in the Navy. You often see a Lieutenant Commander serving as a CAPTAIN (the POSITION) of a smaller vessel or non-capital ship or even a shore facility like a Frigate or an Supply Ship or a small base. One example of this (and the only Star Trek CAPTAIN of a ship or facility who wasn’t a CAPTAIN in rank is Benjamin Sisko). Later he is promoted to CAPTAIN in rank, but before that he was only a COMMANDER (one rank lower) but still the COMMANDING OFFICER of DS9 and the Defiant as he held the rank of Commander.. Most of the time DS9 avoids confusing the viewers by rarely referring to him as the “Captain of DS9” in position, which he TECHNICALLY he was as its Commanding Officer. They refer to him as “Commander Sisko” until he gets his promotion to Captain (in rank), though he already was a “Captain”. I can understand why they would avoid calling Sisko a “Captain” before he achieved the rank to avoid confusion (though I think they should have started him off as a Captain in the first place...). Are there Captains that are NOT commanding officers of a vessel or ship? Absolutely! In the Navy these officers are normally taken off of any ships and placed on shore facilities as an attaché (assistant) to an Admiral. You see this once or twice in TNG BUT they don’t talk much about it.

    This was outstanding! While, I have seen all the classic Star Trek shows which, aired on network TV. Can only remember the details of how they became either a Star Ship or Space Station Captain for a few. For example, the Deep Space Nine back story is special because the commander was passed over for a promotion to the rank of Captain and then sent to an "out of the way" posting that few in Star Fleet even carried about. However, after finding a stable "worm hole" and meeting an advanced alien race (the prophets) things changed.

      Good question. So, I just went back and re-watched the first 15 minutes of the 1st episode and it appears he had everything needed to be promoted to Captain including commanding a star ship in battle against the Borg. With the loss of his wife however, he longer had that "command altitude" and continued to "blame"Captain Parcard, for the death of his wife (both which, according to Star Fleet standards showed that he was not yet ready for the higher rank of Captain).

Captain Parcard's reply is, it is not clear because with their new independence old factions have started fighting each other again. Then Sisko states "Sounds like they are not ready".

      I actually think it was a lot harder on Archer than any of the others after he became Captain (rather than in getting to Captain). Not only did he not have any accumulated mission logs or previous examples from other Captains throughout history to learn from, but his was the first and only Starfleet vessel at the time setting out to explore the vast and cold blackness of space. They had to find their way, make contact with unknown species and chart completely new territory completely alone. There wasn’t an entire fleet of other ships to call for help if you needed it. It would have been a daunting prospect to say the least, but Archer and crew were more than up for it.

    The promotion of Pine's Kirk to captain within a few days after graduation is one of the most unforgiveably silly ideas I've ever heard. JJ Abrams is a buffoon. Don't get me started on the dagger idea from Rise of Skywalker. But this is just two of countless absurdities from Abrams.

    • @CaptainPikeachu
      @CaptainPikeachu 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      It's hardly that unforgivable and silly, Starfleet lost basically an entire graduating class, not to mention how many older officers in the fleet at Vulcan. It is not unlikely at all that they would have promoted Kirk given he not only saved the day but also showed that he was able to do the job. Besides, the whole point of Kirk being unready for command was addressed in the second movie literally as a story point that they promoted him too fast in the moment without thinking about long term.

    • @markaaron9957

    Rachel Garrett was not the only female captain of an Enterprise. Beverly Crusher was given temporary command of the Enterprise D. Picard even refered to her as Captain when she took temporary command of the ship during a Borg incident.

    Janeway is one of the most underrated captains in Star Trek. But when it comes to leadership skills, she is probably the best.

    • @dog3y3
      @dog3y3 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would humbly disagree. She takes too much personally, is inconsistent with her reasoning, and should not have been promoted to captain, since she tends to let guilt break protocol. I've re-watched Voyager a few times all the way through, and it's become clearer each time. Bare with me and test your premise that she's a good captain. Watch her command choices, and make note when she takes on personal command. This is the same type of character as James T. Kirk. I don't think he was a very good Captain either, since he personally oversaw so many away missions, when his responsibility was to the ship (Which he states constantly). Granted, all of this is due to writers changing or inconsistency, so It's not really the character i'm disappointed with, but with the writing. Like any TV show, if there is little consistency with a character, you'll loose interest of the audience. I can't believe they gave Beverly Crusher a command. She's way too emotional and illogical. I will not discuss Discovery. That dumpster fire is not worth my time or effort. Best 3 Captains in my opinion (in order of best first): Sisko, Picard, Riker (i would liked to have seen more of Riker as a captain).

    • @Dimetropteryx
      @Dimetropteryx 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dog3y3 Sisko is borderline psychotic, Picard hides behind the Prime Directive but only when tough decisions need to be made (not to mention that he disregards the only legitimate genius on the ship), and Riker spent the entire series occupying a seat that should have been used to train more captains.
