    I love that he just flat out owns the fact that Bruce Campbell called him out on his acting style being the way it is because he can't remember his lines. "He's right!"

      Bruce Campbell is one of my favorite actors of all time... I still laugh at the scene where his hand was trying to kill him in the kitchen of Evil Dead. And in Army of Darkness "This is my BOOMSTICK!"

    He's a naturally funny guy. His constant denial of every impression's accuracy is just part of his schtik. It's like, I remember when the movie "Galaxy Quest" came out, he mentioned that he recognized every character as a Star Trek reference, except for the Tim Allen part. He was like, "for the life of me, I don't know who he's supposed to be. What are they doing with this?"

    The Kirk character was a believable threat, in all situations. Like the character Jim West. He wasn't some muscle bound behemoth, he was a credibly build for a wrestler. The action was always gritty and realistic which helped ground the fantastical situations of the show. People tease over his cadence but fail to notice the subtle fact that the alien beings he's interacting with, don't speak English as a first language. Shatner was a true actor, and played the role of Kirk like few men could.

    That's the thing, is most people, when they do a Shatner, what they're impersonating is Kevin Pollack's impression. I've long thought Belushi's take was closer to the mark than people acknowledged, because he's not doing the cliched take everyone does. Mostly because at the time of the sketch, the cliche hadn't been established.

  • @psmirage8584
    @psmirage8584 3 ปีที่แล้ว +236

    The thing is, if you go back and watch multiple Original Star Treks, Kirk very rarely emotes like that. It's worth noting that Shatner was trained as a stage actor, where exaggerated emotions are necessary to convey to the audience, who never gets a close up of their faces. So, in some circumstances, Kirk does have an exaggerated emotion, but I think that's mostly the character. It was intended as a foil to Spock's usually stoic delivery. I really think William Shatner did a magnificent job as Kirk. Chris Pine does a great impression, too, because he doesn't resort to caricature.

Watch an episode like "The Enterprise Incident" or "And the Children Shall Lead" or "Turnabout Intruder", Shatner's off on another planet half the time. I think he knew he was getting substandard material at that point and was just like "Screw it, I'm at least gonna try to have fun with this" 😆

      He kind of evolves into that style as the series went on. I just watched the original series again, and what surprises me is how few times Bones says, "dammit Jim, I'm a doctor"...and how little the Klingons are actually in the series. As I thought I remembered it, Bones was always saying that and the Klingons were in virtually every episode!
