  • Writer-director Joanna Hogg and actors Honor Swinton Byrne & Tilda Swinton discuss The Souvenir following a sneak preview at Film at Lincoln Center. For more on the film, read the May-June 2019 issue of Film Comment magazine: www.filmcomment.com/issue/may...
The much-anticipated follow-up to her 2013 feature Exhibition finds Joanna Hogg mining her own autobiography to craft a portrait of the artist as a young woman in early 1980s London. Caught between her dreams of becoming a filmmaker and her commitment to a toxic romance, 24-year-old Julie (an excellent Honor Swinton Byrne) comes home each night from film school to the Knightsbridge apartment owned by her mother (Tilda Swinton) only to discover some new, unpleasant surprise proffered by her boyfriend, Anthony (Tom Burke), a dandyish junkie whose sophisticated aura masks an abyss of selfishness and desperation. An eminently refined and moving bildungsroman about the ties that inexplicably bind, The Souvenir-as its title suggests-is also an absorbing evocation of a time, place, and national mood. An A24 release.
Film at Lincoln Center is dedicated to supporting the art and elevating the craft of cinema and enriching film culture.
Film at Lincoln Center fulfills its mission through the programming of festivals, series, retrospectives, and new releases; the publication of Film Comment; the presentation of podcasts, talks, and special events; the creation and implementation of Artist Initiatives; and our Film in Education curriculum and screenings. Since its founding in 1969, this nonprofit organization has brought the celebration of American and international film to the world-renowned arts complex Lincoln Center, making the discussion and appreciation of cinema accessible to a broad audience, and ensuring that it remains an essential art form for years to come.

I was blessed to have played Ray the intruder in both films and also Authenticity Consult on both films working with Jo, Tom, Art (ish) DOP to help creative a certain Authenticity to the projects.
Jo and Tom put a lot of love and trust into me and helped launch my career as a Consultant in films.
I was 18 months clean and sober when i started working with her.
Im forever grateful to her for helping me launch my career.

At about 33 minutes Joanna Hogg is asked a question from the audience about the significance of Julie's 'sickness' in the second part of the film. This had me puzzled as well and Hogg says that it was a kind of reference to the AIDS epidemic, but I thought that it might have been that Julie was experimenting with heroin. Maybe Julie felt that she could get closer to Anthony if she could understand the powerful and mesmerizing power of his drug of choice. She only uses a few times and then stops before she acquires a habit and is able to conceal the experimentation from her friends and family.

I just discovered Joanna Hogg through my love of A24 and the films they distribute. She's a wonderful filmmaker and I like that her films involve some aspect of the middle class and social realism. Really reminds me of some great contemporary realist directors and her use static long shots are beautiful.

Middle Class? She went to the same school as The Spencer Girl.
      More aristo' than The Windsor's.
People like this are the reason England has always produced bad art.
      Swinton's included. 🐷

They both, Tilda and Honor, have something profoundly kind about them - the way they receive the questions, so open and the opposite of guarded, the way they smile, so genuine, nothing fake or affected or vain, genuinely interested in other people, no narcissism...wow! so refreshing in this day and age!

I was looking forward to see the film and the directing is interesting. The truth is that there is nothing interesting about the plot: dating a drug addict. The plot could not hit any interesting "notes". The whole plot was FLAT. Too bad. I experienced the film as absolutley "self indulgent". Her friends were much more interesting than the characters. There was NO character development. No rises, only fall after fall. It gets boring to see someone disintegrate and someone watch them, and then blame themselves. The character development lacked interest. These people were just bored with their lives and in the end, the film was boring. Innovative directing did not carry the plot.

    • @dayko1329

Long periods of life can be dark and tired and cold. This film for me was captivating and more so as the film goes on and you see the humanity in hopelessness. A lot of the time people don't have the answers and things 'disintegrate' The 'fall after fall' is compelling and breaks typical conventions. I think it was so brave and truthful to keep the film focussed in this realm of experiences and not narrative. The concept of character development can sometimes become forced. Focussing on the plot can put the beauty of the human interactions during those moments, or on the way to those moments to the background.

    • @Johnconno

What was so innovative about the directing? The Swinton brand got this film made, I can't think of any other reason.

@@Johnconno Tilda Swinton has been friends with Joanna Hogg since the 80's, that plus Tilda's daughter getting her first acting role as the lead in that film, just shows what a Luvvie Home Movie it is. It's the sort of thing that goes on up and down the country in Am-Dram groups. Here it was just done with money.
