I absolutely agree- i could feel the catharsis Julie was getting throughout the process of making her movie, and through that I could feel joanna hogg’s catharsis by making each of the two films. I’m currently a first year film student in London and her artistic process is incredibly familiar.

I wonder how you film something like this? Do they use multiple cameras to cover all the actors during the scene, or are they able to go back over their performances even though it is being effectively ad-libbed?

Saw the film yesterday (a double screening of part I and II which was lovely) and I laughed when Mark talked about the ceramics falling moment, since multiple people in the audience loudly gasped when that happened.

Yes, she paints the British (upper?) middle class so well, from my perspective as an outsider. Thinking of how Mark & Simon related to the parents. I enjoyed all of the scenes with the family in the Souvenir but didn’t like the film overall, doubt I’ll watch the sequel. Loved Archipelago and Unrelated.

the second film is incredible. I’d understand passing on the sequel to say, a blockbuster you didn’t enjoy. But this is far from a conventional follow-up - it builds and expands on the first film in ways I’m struggling to even articulate. Just know that you’d be missing out on a great film if you don’t watch it

@@thegentleassassin agree! it is quite different from the first film in many ways, mainly it's outlook - I recommend you watch it

I can totally see how this reality is Joanna Hogg's 'truth' and what matters to her but I just struggle to perceive any of it as genuine problems. It seems that some middle class people desperately want to believe that their lives have any drama to them but at the end of the day, it's mostly ennuie or self-sabotage. The form (cinematography, editing, the overall atmosphere) is highly enjoyable but the story left me feeling indifferent.

With The Souvenir I had that problem, but only because Hogg herself pointed it out in the scene where the main character has the film camera, and someone literally says "She's privileged".
The thing I like about her films is that; you know how you watch Bridget Jones' diary and they live in big houses, on cobble streets, because that how international audiences think of London. Well I think Hoggs films cut into Upper Middle Class life a bit better than that. The scene in her first film where the guy is talking about Mussolini's bed is hilarious and shows her disdain for such things, and the scene later on in the Travel Lodge like Hotel is brutal. That wouldn't work at all in a film about working class people.
The Souvenir did leave me a little empty, also to base a film on your life at film school is a little on nose for a director.

I need to rewatch The Souvenir as I'm so embarrassed to admit I really struggled to properly appreciate it. I was on morphine with a fractured back at thd time so I'll blame that for the reason I fell asleep. Whenever Mark and Simon talk about it it sounds so so good, I must've gotten it very badly wrong.

    • @jamespotter3660

likewise, apart from the morphine and fractured back bit, I had to watch it a second time to fully appreciate it. Well worth it.

I promise you it wasn't the morphine, The Souvenir Part I is honestly one of the most dull films ever made. I went into Part II with rock-bottom expectations and was SHOCKED at how much I loved it. It actually made me want to give Part I another chance.

    • @JasonKeane

@@leonkuwata4510 Agreed. I found 'The Souvenir Part I' to be the dullest film I've ever watched. I'm curious though - if you disliked Part I so much, why would you go see Part II? You couldn't pay me to rewatch Part I or go see Part II. Joanna Hogg must be the least imaginative filmmaker I've ever watched - it just goes to show how far nepotism can take you.

@@leonkuwata4510 I'm glad I'm not alone in my initial reaction 😅 ! I admire your determination to give part II a chance after finding the first so dull. I kind of get it....I'm an optimist and tend to hope I may respond differently?! If not, then it's been rare opportunity to sit and have no Internet/phone/distractions for 90mins, which I definitely need to make myself do more often! I watched Boiling Point yesterday....now that was a film with impact, the ability to emote and, having worked in a kitchen and restaurant in my youff, definitely a very accurate portrayal. Characters I CARED about. If you've not seen it yet, I recommend (although it is a heavy, tense and ultimately emotionally exhausting watch!).

I liked it slightly better than the first one, which I didn't really like at all. I liked a lot of this one, yet found other parts almost unbearably hacky and annoying. I just want to watch a story - I don't want to be constantly reminded that I'm watching a movie

Loved part 1 and saw part 2 at the London film festival; enjoyable but came away with the feeling that I've watched a film about nothing in particular. There's no urgency to this film, no story, it's a mediation of sorts but compared to Part 1 it's a misfire.
