I love watching these. At 3:44 Joanna talks about watching films for the first time as opposed to re-watching favorites. I've noticed that the guests to the Closet almost always pick out old favorites -- you rarely hear, "What's this? It looks interesting, I'll take it."
Please tell me someone at criterion made sure she knows the essential Fellini box is a thing

The Age of Innocence was certainly one of the very best films of the 1990s. Extraordinary performances and remarkably done!

2:59 She seems to be a bit off when it comes to the release dates or production of "New York, New York" (1977), "All that Jazz" (1979) and "One from the heart" (1982). Nice choices, though, I should check out her work.

Archipelago was as good as any of the films she selected f... blew my mind when I saw it. It was pure excruciating tension. And very accurate of the upper middle class. Didn't know she had a period piece produced by Scorsese coming up?
The Red Shoes is a gift to anyone who watches it and forgets who they are during the viewing and never forget its better to be stolen from....
All That Jazz was 79. New York, New York was 77. One from the Heart was 82. So fired. I’d like a crack at that Criterion closet please 😁

Really like this woman and love her picks. I am unfamiliar with her work, but will check it out because I really liked her. I remember the year All That Jazz was up for an Oscar and didn't win. I thought it should have won. But some great movies were made in 1979-1980.
As of this date, I have watched 25...twenty five!...different "criterioncollection " videos. And what fascinates me, is I am noticing patterns. There are a fistful of REPETITIVE recommendations. I now have to see and see what all the excitement is about of : Bicycle Theives, 8 1/2, Weekend, and a couple of films of Cassavettes and a Fellini film. Still waiting for more recommendations.
All That Jazz gets picked hella lot, including this video. Possibly the most picked title in the series. 8 1/2 is up there
I would totally be taking the Statler and Waldorf along with my movies.

there's a really cool quick aside she drops in here - "...if there's such a thing as "the best" film" - I like the idea of pushing back on our need to rank and categorize every film along the absolute terms like "best," "greatest," or "worst."

My colleagues and I want to see Tarantino in this closet, but with a strict 10-minute time limit.
Would not have guessed any of the picks , they are so the opposite to her profoundly subdued works of authenticity and psychological portraits, really surprised, love her works.
I feel like "La Strada" and "Down By Law" are the most frequently snatched titles in this series. Anyone keeping score?

I thought that the student film sequence in The Souvenir Part 2 was the best homage to The Red Shoes that I’ve ever seen. Not surprised at all to see her pick it

Great director. Saw a bit of Archipelago late one night on telly, then went to see Exhibition on my own in the cinema and fell in love right there. My favourite, though, might actually be her debut film, Unrelated...would love to see Criterion pounce on that.
I'm still quite new to watching non-mainstream cinema, so I watch these to help me choose what to watch next haha I'm definitely going to look up some Fellini films later

I feel like many people love All That Jazz more than Cabaret. But Cabaret is a much better film and more entertaining, too.
I know it as nothing to do with the video but criterion if its possible could you please bring Hitokiri (1969), Goyokin (1969), Samurai Wolf (1966), Samurai Wolf 2 (1967), The Secret Of The Urn (1966), The Wolves (1972), Fireflies In The North (1984), 226 Four Days Of Snow And Blood (1989) and Violent Streets (1974) all directed by Hideo Gosha.

Now see..this...THIS IS an intelligent woman. I value her advice, the analysis of movies, film, and thoughts and criticism. JOHN CAMPEA AND GRACE RANDOLPH AND Heroes Reforged are NOT HOTCRAP movie critics who know ANYTHING about making a film great! I get tired of hearing the excuse from movie fans and excited fan boys of Marvel, DC and science fiction fans who think that YOU CAN'T compare their movies with what Joanna Hogg's choices are. BULLSHIT. Some sci fi films CAN be made great, classic. Proof" 2001 Space Odyssey, modern The Joker, Blade Runner [the original ], The Andromeda STrain [the original] and Shatner's Star Trek: The Wrath of Kahn. Even Wandavisions Elizabeth Olson did a great portrayal of a woman's tragic pain and loss of those she loved.

i sometimes asked myself if some of these filmmakers have a bluRay player because i've seen several grab the DVD version, but i'm pretty certain i have the bluRay version in my collectin....
Haha I just thought to myself as I watched this video, if the people behind the camera ask the participants if they have a blu-ray player; "you know, this edition is actually better..."
Criterions are US region locked. DVDs are only software locked so not a big deal, blu-rays are hardware locked, so you need an expensive hooky chipped player for them in the UK. I invested in one to watch Criterion blu-rays but I can see why many would just stick with the DVDs. That may be why.
What I love about "All That Jazz" is how the airline musical number in it feels erotic and horrifying at the same time. And the film did also have shades of "8 1/2". There was a scene of Scheider in a nightclub that kind of echoed the sequence of Mastroianni in his harem of women.

For my money Dekalog is the best Criterion has to offer when you consider quality of the film and Criterion packaging.
It's 10hrs long, and only made it to the collection a few years ago. Not everyone's going to have seen it yet.

How do I get invited to do a video of my picks from the closet? I wrote to criterion asking to be invited to do a video for my closet picks but I never got any reply from them. I hope the criterion powers that be see this comment and invite me to do a video. I have a list of titles ready to go so that I don’t waste any time putting them in my bag
