Awesome video! The excitement of your first hog. The nervous quietness when the game comes into view. It was like I was there with you. For that reason it's better than other videos by experts that have shot thousands of hogs. I also like how the piglet froze whenever mom froze. Piglet mirrored the movements of mom, not the other pig.

Congratulations on your first hog bub!! My fiancé and I have been hunting hogs for SEVERAL years in Texas, and it never gets old lol. Don’t know if anyone has told you on hogs, but best shot placement on them are head shots or right behind the shoulder (like on deer), they’ve ALWAYS dropped for us. Still awesome though for your first pig! Thank you for taking us with you and again congratulations

Your video takes me back to when I use to hunt hog in Florida. I used a Puma Large Loop 16 inch barrel Saddle Ring Carbine in .357 Mag. For back up I carried a Ruger GP100 with a 6 inch barrel also in .357 Mag. Unfortunately I loaned the Puma to my youngest for hunting and it was stolen while he was house sitting his grandmas home. While I miss that rifle I now have a Henry Big Boy X in .357 Mag. Plan is to get back to Florida soon and do some hog hunting on a friends property that borders the Ocala National Forest.

From my Rossi 20" mod 92 the American Eagle 158 gr SP clocks 1747 fps. Your hit looked on the money. If the spine isn't hit or shocked they can run a good way. Great to hear your excitement when you recovered it. Feral pigs are tasty. The meat is more lean, even if the pig has a lot of subcutaneous fat, than farm raised, because they are always on the move when not eating or sleeping.

Ear shot they don’t run at all. If you’re that close, and off a rest it’s an easy shot. Right where the ear attaches to the head. .22 mag takes them down every time.

Excellent story. The video draws the viewer into the prep, location, and field of opportunity for clean shot without obstructions. Revealing the other creatures in the chosen habitat increases the anticipation as your narration demonstrated the possible forthcoming activity as the sun sets. As the hogs cautionary moves from cover into the open the sow with the single piglet displays the natural wariness of matriarchal instinct to protect the offspring. Taking the time and stealth to reposition the camera to record the continuing saga enhances
the viewers connection with your own excitement building. Some are saying shoot at first pause before the near quartering opportunity. Cocking the hammer on any firearm in any hunting situation must use stealth and deliberate action while watching for any indication of your intended target being alerted to your presence or movement. Steadying the HENRY in the rest, you peer through the peep finding your target. However , by this time your adrenaline was racing and a certain tremor was affecting your vision as well as steading your aim with the fading light. Finally after most viewers were encouraging the shot you gained your composure, took a breath, squeezed the shot. At that range you could see the effect of impact. Giving praise to the the Creator for all blessings implied in your thanksgiving. Remembering the near exact point of impact you found the first blood of your first hog hunt, and began uttering truthful responses that your whole being was feeling. Having your hunting partner share in this first legacy hunting adventure only increases the positive outcome with sharing the unfolding of an experience not to be forgotten in a lifetime. Truly a story many will acknowledge several lessons of first kill in the life of an Ethical Hunter.

  • @omnivore2220
    @omnivore2220 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Congratulations on a good shot! Yeah, see, that right there is why I generally don't have a sling on a woods rifle. The damned thing snags on everything, all the time, in the most in opportune times. It happens indoors too; it snags on chair backs, door knobs, and many other things you can't even imagine until you need to move freely and quickly, and can't. So unless you're carrying the rifle for long periods, or long distances, you may want to rethink having a sling on it.
It has served me very well in the deer fields, carrying with no sling, in the low ready or port positions, while walking, hoping to scare something up. The rifle is that much more ready when you already have two hands on it and don't have to fiddle-fart with un-slinging it. When stand hunting, the lack of a sling makes it far easier to get the rifle up into a tree, back down out of a tree, or to handle it in close quarters.
And we should talk about the silent cocking of the hammer. For years, I had thought that people understood it, but now it seems to have been forgotten as I've seen two examples of loud cocking in as many days. It needs to be practiced at home until it is second nature, with no chance of a mis-step. Step 1. With the hammer down, pull the trigger all the way back and keep it there. Step 2. Pull the hammer back and hold it there. Step 3. Release the trigger. Step 4. Ease the hammer forward onto the sear. Now you're ready to shoot, and not a single sound has been made whatsoever.

Great shot ! But that sling got in the way of your follow up shots. Still a great hunt and video.

I thought the .357 might be a little light, but apparently not to bad

Congrats on your first hawg kill. Lots of fun, huh? May I suggest moving your POA forward into the shoulder or even the neck area or a frontal shot to the face/head. Put an end to blood trails.

Slings are for carrying you gun in and out. Otherwise take it off.

Red/brown must be the new "In color" for Florida pigs. The last one I shot was the same color. Hit her in the spin with a .260 Remington and she dropped on the spot.

I load 38 Super for competition in an 2011 open gun and get about 1400FPS with 124g so has anyone tried 38 Super in the Henry? I use slow pistol powder and a 5" barrel with poppers and comp so expect a lot higher velocity with the Henry

Fantastic shot! I just picked up a Henry .357. Can't wait to start reloading for it. What load did you use?

My favorite gun I own. I used American Eagle 158 grain soft points.

There is a very long list of Bullets and Powder. I stick with 158 soft points and slow (but stiff) Blue Dot or 800X(Shotgun powder but exelent for heavy 357) powders. But with so many options. Mindbogling. For practice 38 Spcl cast and any fast powder (shotgun reloader use 700X) With the right/accurate,load, 150 yds easy. Friends used it for very large rogge cattle. For close a 158 HP might give better expantion on small pigs. But on a HWeight soft point penetrates. Back bone/spine my choice. At that distance have taken quite a few with my 550 Rem 22 LR , between the eyes/behind the ear👍Was looking into the 350 Legend, Very interesting. But no Lever or Mini 350

If you can find the Barns copper expanding bullets in the 147 grain those kill the fastest.
I use these in my 35 Rem

@@WillyK51 You might consider a .38-55 or a used .375 Winchester. Every bit and greater performance of a .350 Legend. You can always go up the food chain to .444 Marlin or .45-70.
If you stay with pistol cartridges, .357mag is plenty with the hot ammo (Buffalo Bore, DoubleTap, Grizzly). You can find them, but the are rather rare, a .41magnum lever action. Tons of .44 magnum and .45 Colt lever actions are on the market.

Aim lower. The heart is much lower in the chest than in a deer. Right about where the front leg meets the body. They bleed really well , and don't even run 50 yards. Good shot. In my experience, the best
