Top speed is incredible. Car looks like loads of fun and it's definitely more than anyone could want out of a "normal daily driver hatchback". The transmission "smart" shifting is also really impressive. That being said, I have to say....it does not behave like a real rwd car. Let's not muddy these waters unnecessarily. It's really a great car though.
You're right in that it will always be a FWD platform first and foremost, but when you are torque-vectoring to one rear wheel, do not underestimate how this completely transforms the feeling and playfulness of the car. I own an 8 R, and it's a system capable of true rear-bias. It transforms a "boring" hot hatch that is typically FWD or 50/50 AWD at best (like 7R and earlier), into a car capable of true rotation on turn in, and yes, even "drifts". Barring the Focus RS (which i've also owned), there is really nothing out there that can match the same daily practicality of a hatch, with some true rear-bias fun like the Golf 8/8.5 can offer.
@@ZenzDeluxeAgree with most of your points but at best the rear axle can only be locked to the front, which means max 50/50 split under normal conditions. Theoretically on both this and older models more than 50% torque can go to the rear if there is a loss of traction on the front axle, but physically if the front left is slipping there is a loss of torque to the other three wheels due to open diff and bevel box setup. But ABS will try to brake slipping wheels which creates a limited slip differential effect.
@@zounds13 That wouldn’t actually work due to the layout because the rear prop shaft is from a bevel gear on the right front axle (essentially). Because the front differential is open, when the clutch on the left axle opens, the torque on right axle (and bevel) would be equal to the left. However, the torque is this case is nothing. To make it work you would need a locking front differential. Another option is a real centre differential which is possible in this layout with concentric shafts, eg Celica GT4. You can also brake the slipping wheels, which is essentially what 4Motion setups have done since MK5, but it’s just using the actual brakes and ABS, and although it does work it’s not great. I think mostly because it’s difficult for the system to know how much to brake due to different brake pad material, different discs, changing temperatures etc. I think it’s also limited to 25 km/h.

@@MrCaterhamr500 this is the thing - if i had a gti - i would be ok with the setup but in the R (while i do think the nardo leather seats are awesome) they couldve definitely gone for a more track style bucket seats and honestly shred some weight. One thing you notice right away in the TYPE R for example is the weight. it feels light and nimble. The systems in the golf can only do so much to keep weight feeling negligible but the moment you hit a sharper turn its obvious. They Type R on the other hand feels like its awd in most turns and you can actually let it slip very easily and oversteer into corners and not worry TOO much about understeer. i currently run 265/35 front and 255/35 rears on my type R so you can imagine. its on rails.
Except the Elantra N beats it
@@davothegreat9990 nobody and i mean NOBODY really like hyundai - its a broke persons car - anyone who knows anything about theta engines know how unreliable it is. also where did the elantra N beat any of these cars? definitely not on the ring thats for a damn fact.
that golf r is ment and that s24 ultra video recording is amazing !!!
I love this car, this brand and your driving Sir
it is good to see MIsha outside his natural habitat
Nice improvement of Golf R
Good advertisement for Volkswagen
Love Doug Demuro reference,,, hope one day you take him a ride roung the Ring
💙 my VW Golf R!! So fun to drive!
just load a map of the track to the car so that drives in the circuit automatically so that you don't need to not only shift but also drive at all and you can focus on the race better :D
What is mental, is that in 2024 these programmable shifting options are novelty... But it's a welcomed step forward 👍 (and no more soft limiter at 255kph)
In South Africa, they just launched the 8.0 R
1:00 Hello, My name is -Max- Misha and we are going to take it towards the autobahn for an autobanh blast.
Holy. +270kmph and car sit like a train 😮😊 this look on good dd car!
The fastest I have been on the autobahn so far is 210km/h and I tought that was pretty quick. I can't imagine an extra 60-90km/h on top of that. Mainly because where I live, the autobahn is rarely free enough to go past 180km/h and people tend to camp on the left lane while attempting to overtake but only going 5km/h faster than the vehicles being overtaken.
You get the impression this guy had a major input into developing the car. It looks like the perfect track animal now. At least for someone like me who can't drive! 🤣
I also enjoy the concept of a German forcing themselves to say, "fauhn muod" 🤭
Getting excited about a gold ks like getting excited for cheddar cheese or the colour beige.
