kinda weird how vinny never talks during these facecam vids. At least Gnorts can carry the commentary for him.
This is the chat from the live stream where there were cuts and pauses, and there's an added section that's only in the prerecorded video so it has no chat. It'll look like the chat 'froze' but it resumes once the vod reaches a part when it was actually livestreamed.

Jack black feels like he put his soul into that mic and Chris sounds like he’s trying not to fall asleep in the booth and during the interview.
Jack Black has always been an actor that puts 120% into everything he does. If you watch his TH-cam channel you will see just how much work he puts into making it entertaining and even a little informative, depending on the video. Even before this movie he's done some VA work and it's always sounded great. I'd honestly consider him a lot like Robin Williams in that he is someone who is so expressive with his voice. He was a great choice for Bowser.

I think it really says something that Vinny forgot that Bowser was Jack Black even after watching the trailer. Like, it makes it so apparent the amount of talent and passion that a truly skilled voice actor can put into their performance that they pretty much become the character. Meanwhile Mario is just chris pratt and that's all we can hear
I wish we had a better Mario voice, because I'm genuinely excited to hear more of Jack Black as Bowser
That is what actual good voice actors do, like people get surprised with some of the roles of Tom Kenny (spongebob VA)
You got Keagan Michael Key doing an accurate Toad voice and Kevin Michael Richardson doing an accurate Kamek voice. Also Jack Black doing his own great spin with Bowser's voice. Then Crisp Rat just speaks in own regular azz voice lmao. Knowing the how passionate internet fans are, there will be a fan dub of this film after its released.
I do hope so. I’ve got nothing against the guy but I think that was a definite miscast. Focusing on names over the actual actor’s skills is wrecking animated movies nowadays.
Everybody else in the trailer sounds great though (ESPECIALLY Jack Black), so I’m hoping they only redub Mario. Maybe we can mix and match?

Chris Pratt is a stark reminder that Hollywood needs to hire voice actors for these kind of things again and not just celebrities, this is exactly what Robin Williams warned us about.
And yet Jack Black (another big celebrity) Keegan Michael Key (another big celebrity) do a good job in their roles, the problem isn’t just casting big names, it’s casting the right big names for the role.
Honestly I just wish they wouldn't advertise it as much or made it the center focus, maybe that would help with the wrongful casting.
@@derpstick5467 this is the correct take here: It's not necessarily just about if they are trained VA's, but it's also about how they cast and direct. Chris here is pretty much doing a slight Brooklyn accent but is otherwise Standard Crisp Rat, though we only got two major lines here. Jack Black and Keagan Michael Key here are doing a more unique form for their roles. And it could be said they're trying to get closer to source, but they still feel alive and energized for their trailer parts, and give their own performances a unique touch based on their character.
@@ZudeXbox360 Yeah Derp Stick I believe forgot that among them, Chrips is the only one who isn't a VA. Keagan and Jack are experienced VAs with great ranges, and Charlie already has the perfect voice for Luigi. Crisp hasn't shown himself to have much of a range, and while he can do his one generic outdoors hot guy act pretty well, that's about all we've seen he can pull from his acting toolbox. I think we all agree that he was miscast/shouldn't have gotten the role, but just remember a huge part of why everyone else sounds good is because this isn't their first rodeo. So I guess it's a mix of these different reasons.

They weren’t wrong, Jack Black as Bowser stole the show. Chris Pratt sounds very asleep at the microphone.
They should just cast Danny DeVito as Mario, to be honest. He and Charlie Day already have chemistry, and DeVito already have the right accent and voice AND they are both the right body types and age (Danny is short pudgy older brother Mario, Carlie is tall younger brother Luigi-- it works out great for costumes on opening night!) . It's just fucking insanity that nobody brought this up in the meeting room.

I fully expect Mario's voice to just be Chris Pratt at the start, and slowly over the course of the film, it becomes more 'Mario' the more time he spends in the Mushroom Kingdom, and by the end, it's gonna be a short cameo from Charles Martinet doing the voice.

I was pretty confident Jack Black would do well. For one thing, he has some experience with kung fu panda and a few other roles. And more importantly, he's the entertainer type. He's used to doing voices for some Tenacious D stuff too. In general, I feel like singers have a pretty good base for VA work and VAs have an easier time singing than completely untrained people, thanks to their vocal control.

Let's hope there's a scene where Pratt Mario uses his "raptor hand" to hold away Bowser, I'm sure Vinny would consider it as one of the greatest cinematic moments ever.
I feel like Jack Black sounds great as Bowser because, although it doesn't sound *exactly* like in the games obviously, it is still along the same VIBE as the games and it works well. I do understand that maybe having Charles doing the Mario voice for a full movie like this just might not work or might not have been a feasible option (idk), but Pratt here just sounds absolutely NOTHING along the lines of Mario AT ALL (at least what we have become used to Mario sounding like) and he sounds completely generic and boring, which doesn't fit Mario at all IMO.
The best part of Bowser here for me is that while he looks almost like he was plucked straight from one of the 3D games, they also managed to make him clearly resemble Jack Black, without one overpowering the other. It's this incredible, perfect fusion of the two. And the voice ties it all together in the best way, because it's also clearly Bowser while being recognizably Jack Black. Whoever's idea it was to make him Bowser needs a raise.

Jack Black is great as Bowser because he actually has experience voice acting and has range. Everyone was half expecting Kung Fu Panda Bowser, but much to everyone's surprise, he's capable of doing a deep, gruff voice fitting for the role, unlike Chris Pratt whose range is...talking like normal.

Just imagine if they just used that Italian simlish from the mario and luigi games the bros use when they talk and have everyone else talk normally. Mario and luigi just strange italian sounding noises with everyone else understanding them and chatting like its perfectly normal.
Half of everyone would say it’s perfect and the other half would say it’s cringe. I may be over exaggerating, but, I kind of already have washed him out of my mind and will focus on the other characters voices. So far, seems they were all better picks

I've seen more of Vinny in the last few months than I've seen him in the five or so years of watching him. Starting to wonder if V-Dub has assumed the role of Liquid Vinny and took his place.
Different sized koopas is actually insane just realized this, some of them are long and have kneepads and some of them are stockier and shorter
And some of them look like Koopanators, too!
You can tell they’re using everything they can to bring this movie to life, it’s wonderful!

Mario's design honestly looks fine. It's likely going to be one of those situations where the design grows grows on you the more you see it. I think I'd need to hear more of Chris Pratt in the role to really form a concrete opinion, but initial impression is pretty disappointing, but not unexpected.
I legitimately can't tell if I'm kinda ehhh on the design because there are some things off about it, or if it's just cuz I've seen largely the same Mario designs my entire life and small deviations just make it _seem_ weird.
I don't think the design is too bad, it's just that the proportions on his body are very.. Odd. As pointed out, he kind of has no ass. He's got limbs, and a head, but his body itself is kind of a vaguely oval shape without any defining features to it, which makes it look very odd. Luigi's is much easier to make look natural due to his more slim and taller build.
For me, the designs being slightly different is even better than taking the game models, frankly, it's like going back to the 80-90s, but in a different way. But Crispy Ratt? Redundant. He will do himself once again, sadly, while Jack Black kills it, and Charley is perfect because causality or something

Honestly, it seemed like he'd never even heard of a game before. The only benefit of the doubt here could have been that he probably was about to say "goombas" instead of koopas.

He's playing the Brooklyn version of Mario, not the Italian version.
I can hear the Brooklyn accent in Chris Pratt's Mario voice. I don't think his normal voice has that inflexion. Maybe using a muttered, under-breath line as the first line we hear wasn't the best decision, but you hear it more in his second line as he's jumping on the mushrooms. I have hope for this Mario, we've only heard two lines and you can tell the Brooklyn accent from the pre-Martinet days is back, just not as exaggerated here.
Can we make it a future charity goal to have Vinny redub the entirety of Mario's lines once this movie comes out?
I feel like your impressions of gruff Mario have kept that option alive honestly. At least in my eyes. I could see it, because your take on it is an entertaining contrast to Charles' high pitched voice that everyone knows and recognizes.
I think the problem Nintendo has with the grump voice is it doesn't sound Cartoony enough for them, which is a shame because it makes Mario a genuinely unique and interesting mascot. What kind of corporate mascot has a grumpy Italian plumber voice? Love Charles Martinet, but the grump voice needs more love.
Don't want high pitch, and I don't even know who charles is.. and bob hoskins did an amazing job in the other mario film which is good fine movie..

I vastly prefer the overly cinematic music to some random pop track, and Koji Kondo being involved makes me feel a lot better about all of it

If this movie doesn't feature a sequence where Crispy Rat does the famous dance involving "swinging your arms, from side to side," and "taking one step and then again", then it's definitely not worth our time....

His voice in the Portuguese version is also great. It's almost like for the dubs they hired voice actors based on their skill and fit for the role and not how famous they are.

I don’t think Pratt’s voice will be AS cursed in the actual movie but unironically Vinny would have done a far better job (already has the voice, plus he sounded great in A Fox In Space).
A “Vinny dub” of sorts or somebody else who can do the Captain Lou voice pretty well would fix everything, because the movie looks legitimately phenomenal.

Mario is too big to fail, they could've broken the mold, but instead they went for the most generic hollywood trailer percussion and risers possible.
just imagine an epic orchestra version of the SM3 air ship music in the beginning of the trailer when bowser attacks the penguin kingdom.
Apparently Koji Kondo was heavily involved with (or potentially completely in charge of) the score for the actual film, but obviously for the trailer they just cheaped out and did the most obvious and easy thing possible.
The music will be good - there's probably not going to be any licenced songs - though that doesn't rule out the possibility of a shitty, unnecessary dance scene.
it a shame too i was hoping nintendo would be the one to break the cycle of hollywood tropes, but after hearing about illumination was kinda expected. i would've love A Super Mario Movie not a super mario movie

I think what's unusual about Mario's appearance is his facial structure. The shape of his mouth and position under his mustache are different from the Mario we know, but I like how movie Mario looks for that reason.
I understand of course that not everyone likes doing facecam, but Vimbly is doing really good! He's got a likeable presence on screen.
