In the Archie comics Sonic, there's a backstory in which it's explained that Sonic initially had to constantly replace his shoes because his speed made them burn or something, until Robotnik(before turning evil) made him appropriate sneakers
Its from Fleetway comics lest someone is striken with intense desire to see the whole story of sonic constantly changing shoes for themselves and turns to archie comics and gets disappointed because it never happened there

i saw this movie, yesterday, 2/26/20, and i literally cant imagine what this movie would have been like with this design. he makes sad eyes at the camera so much, and his new design is so much cuter, i dont even want to think about it.

It's very possible because they didn't try with the design, obviously, the jokes are cheesy and not that funny, the casting choice is bizarre, they most likely stole ideas from movies (portal rings, time stop???, probably more), and overall pissed a lot of Sonic fans off and are targeting kids because they think children are dumb enough to like this shit. Hollywood doesn't care as long as they make their doe.
I hope it's cheesy, I want to lick Sonics cheesy feet so much. Mmmm

It pretty much ticks all the boxes for being a disposable summer "turn your brain off" movie, so yeah.
Honestly if they made a sonic movie true to the series it would be ignored by most and disregarded as a "kids movie". I hear peoples' gripes about "do they even care about the series", "its so unfitting", etc... as if the problem is movie studios not understanding. They are not oblivious to the fact that this is not what fans want. Im certain that they know EXACTLY what they are getting into. Honestly this will probably make more than an "actual" sonic movie.

I'm more disappointed in the fact that Paramount used Gangster's Paradise instead of a Crush 40 song, since Crush 40 made most of the music for the entire Sonic the Hedgehog franchise.

Coming back to this 3 years later, I still can't believe that's the design they settled on for sonic. I'm almost certain they made him look bad on purpose to pump up publicity via outrage. They probably had the whole movie rendered with his "final" design and just made the trailer with this weird one.
There was merchandise made of the old design. This wasn't a marketing stunt.
Vinny's little smile when he sees the military general for the first time is the best part of the vid. It's subtle, but it's such a great moment.

Detective Pikachu is inconsistent - Pikachu actually looks fantastic imo, and Greninja, Jigglypuff and Mr Mime look pretty alright to me (the latter makes sense to be terrifying). However, a lot of characters have minor problems that ruin them: Ludicolo is too darkly coloured, Psyduck just looks a little too big, Aipom is slightly too terrifying and Mewtwo just looks like an old man.
Also I like the Charizard model, but the Pokemon TCG art doesn't do it any favours.
However this movie fucked up the one character it needed on a massive level.
