    The reason some folks think that American chocolate, specifically Hershey's, tastes like vomit is because they use milk with butyric acid. It helps it taste slightly tangy for those who enjoy it, but it's clearly not for everyone.

    Very happy that the Mexican snacks included tamarind just so we could see Vinny's reaction to the fact that it's literally just some goop on a plastic-covered spoon, lol. I've never had it myself, but it's a classic Mexican treat made from the tamarind fruit and a couple other ingredients (usually just sugar, but sometimes also chili powder and/or mango) and it really is sold exactly like that. There are variations like the Pulparindo bar that have a more typical candy-like presentation, but you can also literally just buy a bag of goop-covered spoons which is just a really funny visual

      Because the company is called Barr and the old joke is it was made from rusted iron girders (bars), thus the orange hue. Not so much a joke I guess, rather its deliberate namesake. It does have trace levels of iron, but obviously not from boiling down demolished buildings' beams. As for the spelling, it's just a Scottish variation on Iron Brew.

    Hi Vinny, it’s Scottish Vinny writing from London. Irn-Bru is pronounced “Iron Brew”. But you weren’t to know that. From at least the 80s the marketing slogan was “made in Scotland from girders”, presumably attempting a tough Glasgow workers’ aesthetic. I grew up in Glasgow, so here are some unusual things - “soda” is often called “ginger” for some reason, usually among the less economically fortunate. It refers to any carbonated soft drink. You could take empty glass ginger bottles back to the shop and they’d give you money. Incidentally, I have searched relentlessly for anyone who can tell me what the hell Irn-Bru is supposed to be. Nobody knows.

    • @yeismeload
      @yeismeload ปีที่แล้ว +3

      There have been a lot of studies highlighting chocolate preference with associations to childhood. Essentially, whatever you grew up having embeds itself as your preference into adulthood. Some people have more open-minded tastes than others, but I can honestly say most of my favourites do stem from when I was a kid. Anecdotal, sure, but it wouldn't surprise me if there was a strong link between choco and childhood.
      The counter would be that many of my favourites such as Ritter Sport, Ferrero Rocher along with Fortnum and Mason were chocolates I never had as a child, due to their being targeted at adults with their price tags. At the end of the day, the studies may explain preferences for mass-produced brands, but actual chocolatiers (especially small-scale, local shops) will always be on another level for obvious logistical reasons.

    so fun fact about american chocolate tasting like vomit: this is because you guys generally dont get to have your chocolate factories and dairy farms within transport distance of each other. the milk used in american chocolate is more often than not powdered milk, whereas most other places its typically fresh. theres a bitter agent in the powdered milk that genuinely does taste vaguely of vomit and you dont get that in fresh milk, and for some people that vomit-taste is overpowering
    HOWEVER, some american factories do get to have a dairy farm nearby enough to use fresh milk. those factories, quite often, add the bitter agent from the powdered milk in separately and deliberately, bc many americans feel it doesnt taste like chocolate without it. so a local artisinal chocolate probably would have that fresh milk chocolate taste, bc they dont have the funds to add the yucky vomit chemical in there like the big corporations do

    Coffee Crisp and Canadian Oh Henry bars (they're totally different) are great. Ketchup chips are surprisingly decent too. I live in the UK but always stock up on those and Skor bars at Christmas before flying back from visiting family in Vancouver.
    Irn Bru (Iron Brew, not ehr hern) is much better ice cold, so I hope that bottle was in the fridge. People here often have soft drinks at near- room temperature due to the coolers in supermarkets typically being open without closed doors which is bollocks, but any true Scotsman knows it's best chilled. We'll drink it at any temperature though.
    Also, Cheezies are essentially Cheetos but with real cheddar apparently. You notice more of a difference after eating a handful or two, particularly the level of cheese dusting they have. They have a much sharper taste than Cheetos.
