Is it just me, or do the special effects in this scene STILL look really crisp and amazing? Generations and First Contact just LOOK so much better than Insurrection and Nemesis. Stellar Cartography looks so cool here, and I love this scene between Picard and Data.
I think they used ILM for Generations and First Contact. Insurrection and Nemesis used good special effects houses, Blue Sky (?) and Digital Domain, but I suppose they don't have the legacy and rep of ILM.
Picard being a best friend, brother and father figure to Data all at once. Data is like a child when it comes to these new emotions and he needed someone to say, "You can do this. We all go through this. This is you finally being fully human. I'm here for you. Now we have a job to do." I love TNG because they were not just comrades, they were true friends.
Picard never had any children of his own so he looks out for Data, Wesley, Geordi, and other young crewmembers like his own children. Data's loss deeply affected Picard because it was like losing a son to him.
I like this statement, it's perfect. The definition of courage, is facing ones fears. You need an emotion, to deal with an emotion, it absolutely makes sense
I was _absolutely blown away_ by this scene (and the confrontation with the Klingons that followed). I really enjoyed all the micro-expressions during such a critical and sincere moment. The way the movie expressed what Data was experiencing and how Jean-Luc responded was an awesome dialogue. Picard was there to give him some helpful guidance during the most emotionally fragile state Data has ever been in. The defeat and conviction when Data says "deactivating me is the only viable option" and his following protests matched by Picard's advice & quick reminder of rank, duties & orders - showing Data literally snap out of it was a great visual. The way Data says "Sir" before and after almost everything is a neat reminder that he's still trying to be cordial and respectful. The way Picard says "sometimes it takes courage to try..." as he glances away is neat touch - it's almost like he recognizes that he needs to finish with something that Data can learn from and it almost appears that Jean-Luc is subtly divulging that even he himself feels weak and wants to give up sometimes. Picard said just the right things in just the right ways to help Data through it and essentially stopped a monster from being created. Imagine how different Data might have ended up if Picard had simply said "We don't have time for this, get back to work" - Data may have taken it upon himself to deactivate himself in any manner of ways (if you know what I mean) and how would he be IF Starfleet decided to turn him back on? Something to think about. Simply amazing acting by Brent Spiner and Patrick Stewart (especially the almost menacing look on Data's face & Picard's way with words). Every word of every line holds so much weight in this movie. The story arcs and themes of the movie were so very well put together. This scene has helped my through some times in my life... when I feel as though "I cannot" because "I don't have the ability to control my emotions" and believe that "being deactivated is the only viable option", I now remind myself that I have to learn to "live with them no matter what the circumstances" and simply continue to "try". Live long and prosper, friends.
I loved when Picard said, "You are an officer on this ship and I require you to perform your duty" and it snapped Data out of his quandary. It showed that all the training that Data had endured was still there and that in extremes, he still has some control over his emotions
@@crazylarryjr I believe that Data always had emotions but could not feel or express them as intensely as Lore until he got his emotion chip. Picard cares for Data like a son and treats him like one since he never had any children of his own.
@@Elly3981, It was said there was a gatekeeping function, but if i remember correctly the chip that he's referring to is an enhancement to his already there function. I could be wrong, it's been a while since seeing it, but the difficulty was in handling the full spectrum, not the base functionality he already had
@@crazylarryjr I believe that the chip was meant to not only give Data the ability to feel more intensely but also to turn his emotions on and off so he could have them when they were convenient and shut them off when they became a hindrance because with his superhuman strength and abilities, it would have been disastrous for everyone around him if Data were to ever lose his temper over anything or panic in a critical situation and screw up. Dr. Soong learned from his mistake when creating Lore with emotions from the start without the ability to control them.
One of my favorite scenes in this movie. Data is being made to “Man Up’ in human term LOL!!! To move his fear aside and deal with reality like all us humans do 2:40
Hindsight is 20/20, but I wish they would have done an eighth season of TNG instead of Generations. A whole season of Data exploring emotions, a two or three episode arch of Picard dealing with his brother's (and family's) death, more crossovers with DS9, and leading into the launch of Voyager would have been interesting - while incorporating other elements of this movie. ...but of course, retaining All Good Things as is, respectively
@@kiely4561 I always thought Generations and First Contact were better than the ones that came after. Its like the writers got lazy or lost their touch.

I never liked this scene, for one try an old Borg trick and modulate your shields, two try shooting at the Klingons a little more than you actually did, after all you are the flag ship of the Federation. and three, when your told to fire a spread of torpedoes, don't just fire one.
David Ray this has been discussed a lot. It’s just one of those plot holes to forward the movie. In actuality, it’s not just a Borg trick, I believe it’s pretty common practice at this point in the timeline. To go along with that, WHAT POSSIBLE REASON could there be to have the shield modulation posted in the first place???? Seems like a pretty obvious target for espionage...

It’s weird that Data wanted emotions. I wouldn’t mind not having them, so he could have mine.
I like that they used the DS9 uniforms on the next generation crew for the movie.

People who like Star Trek and who've seen the whole movie. It had some good bits with an excellent soundtrack, and that's it.
Yeah I caught it a while back. The enterprise c was in Yesterday's enterprise the tng episode.
Why does the first scene start so late in the movie? Can’t even see the first two acts of it.
