Let’s talk about what kefir is and how it can help you start sleeping better. This is an updated version of a video I did on this topic, with additional tips for better sleep using kefir.
Kefir is a fermented drink. There are about five times the beneficial microbes in kefir than in yogurt. Kefir has a combination of friendly bacteria and yeast-it even has friendly candida.
There are definitely benefits to consuming yogurt, but kefir may be even more beneficial-especially to help you sleep at night.
The microbes in kefir can survive the stomach acid, but the microbes in yogurt can’t. Kefir is a probiotic that helps provide the precursor to melatonin and helps lower cortisol.
A certain strain of microbe that’s in kefir helps increase oxygen and blood flow in the body, which helps you get better sleep. The microbes in kefir also make vitamin B1, an essential vitamin for reducing stress and anxiety. Vitamin B1 also helps support the parasympathetic nervous system, which promotes rest and healthy digestion.
Kefir helps you absorb certain minerals like calcium and magnesium. These two minerals are wonderful to support sleep. Kefir may also be easier to digest for people with sensitivities to milk.
Other potential health benefits of kefir include:
• Helping with allergies or asthma
• Balancing cholesterol
• Reducing bloating or constipation
• Supporting the immune system
Tips for using kefir to sleep better through the night:
1. If you’re doing intermittent fasting, consume kefir at the end of your last meal rather than right before bed.
2. Consume sheep or goat milk kefir if possible.
3. Buy raw milk kefir if possible, or consider making your own kefir from raw milk.
4. Get plain whole milk kefir-not low-fat kefir.

Thanks for watching! Try these tips to sleep better at night. I’ll see you in the next video.
I have been consuming Kefir right after dinner every night for the past 2 1/2 weeks now, and I can confidently say that my sleep has most certainly improved quite a bit. As a matter a fact, as I'm typing this, I actually just woke up from a good night's sleep with zero interruptions at all, and I feel much more recharged than before. A HUGE thank you to Dr. Eric Berg for his knowledge and insightful videos! Kefir has become one of the best investments I have ever made in my entire life so far.
Amazing! Do you make your own kefir or do you buy a ready made one from the store? If you buy from the store, which brand do you buy? Thank you 🙏
you can buy kefir at most grocery stores.
@@TheReminderChannnel - I buy Maple Hill organic kefir at Whole Foods store.
So glad to hear that! My pleasure!
The drug industry wouldn't like it as their sleeping pills would be piling up in the warehouse
In my area, we can’t imagine life without kefir. we even have kefir-based soup. Greatings from Lithuania ❤ 🇱🇹
Could you please give us a recipe for the soup?
@@jerispring For the soup:
200 g | 7 oz boiled & cooled beetroot (about 2 medium beets)
100 g | 3.5 oz cucumber (about 2 large pickling cucumbers, fresh
6 spring onions or 10 green onion leaves
2 hard-boiled eggs
1.5 litres | 3 pints kefir
Bunch fresh dill
Juice of ½ a lemon (optional)
Salt to taste
For the side dish:
200 g | 7 oz potatoes
Labas from USA!
I've been doing this for the year since the last video like this, and can attest with complete assurance that this works. Additional thoughts:
1) add nutitrional yeast for a B-Vitamin double whammy. 🙂
2) if you buy prepared kefir from the grocery store, get the UNSWEETENED variety; most are ruined by a bunch of added sugar (like most other modern foods.)
3) once you've taken it, lights out and stay still in bed (use a sleeping mask if you have to sleep in a light environment.)
Thanks for your feedback 👌🏼😀👌🏼
Can you recommend the kefir you mentioned?
I started drinking Kefir in June 2022 after watching the first video. I noticed a difference in my digestion overnight.
In 1 month (with no other changes to diet) I lost 5 lbs.
After 3 months of drinking kefir, I started eating Sauerkraut and Kimchi.
After about 1 year I have gone from using 6 rolls of toilet paper per month to 4.
My weight has gone from 218 down to 205
Suggestion: get a bidet, you'll go from 4 rolls to about .5 per month and feel cleaner afterward 🙂
thinking about it@@jordanhenegar
thanks for sharing your toilet paper information
I lost several pounds without even trying after getting back on raw milk, which also has probiotics and digestive enzymes.
Started eating Natto in addition to what you are eating as well. Lost a pile of weight.
The best content I've seen on youtube and yes I've seen other videos of yours Dr. Berg and it seems to get better and better. I love to hear anything that has to do with the gut bc people like me need to hear natural remedies for whatever ailments we have. Keep up the good work. Blessings 😊
I’ve had a terrible time sleeping for the past five months since being on keto. Last night, I drank raw, A2A2 Kiefer when I had my first wide awake 2 am wake up. one half a cup and I’m not kidding…..I slept like a baby last night. I am used to waking up at least twice during the night sometimes three times. This morning I woke up at 9 am. Totally rested and shocked me! I will be going to bed earlier tonight with my Kiefer and see how that goes! Thanks dr berg! And thanks to my daughter who milks the A2A2 sweet cow named “Hannah”❤.
Can we just say how beautiful this man is, not only are all of his videos short and informative, but he gets to the point and there's no need to ask for questions. Dr. Eric Berg you are a legend, thank you for all your videos.
Agreed! - great post 👏🏼 👏🏼
He is a gem!!
Handsome
Whole hearted agree. Love it.
Saw the heading & thought I don't have a problem sleeping 😊I listen before thinking of turning off 😊 heard the word Kufir 😊 blown away as very interesting video. Appreciate 😊
As always……massive thanks to you Doc.
Most welcome!
I watched a video about kefir on this channel, many months ago and since then, I have a small glass of Kefir after each of my two meals (I fast 19 hours each day). The results have been amazing and my digestion has significantly improved. Kefir was the final piece of the health jigsaw.
dr berg you dont know how you save my life over and over....im beyond thankful
Glad to hear that. Wishing you good health.
Yesterday about one hour before bed, I ate home made kefir sprinkled with a little glycine powder and some home bottled fruit. The glycine powder is sweet and my kefir is very strong tasting and unsweetened. My sleep score on my Oura ring was 93!
Didn't know that Kefir has such a good effect on sleep. I live in SE Europe - Kefir is available everywhere. We didn't like it in childhood as it has specific taste. Now I would do anything to get back my sleep 💤.. Thank you dr Berg!
Nice to see another good video. Thank you Dr B
Glad that you like this video! Thanks for watching
Thanks Dr. Berg on this video update!! Love Love Kefir!! 🩷

You posted thus at the EXACT right time for me. Thank you! Got blueberry kefir in the fridge baby..
He said to make sure it's plain kefir...the flavored ones don't work as well.
Lololol
I like the blueberry as well. Used to do the honey but haven't been able to find it.
It might have sweetener. Plain is best.
@@flamingpieherman9822 that's because he's PLAIN
Thank you so much Dr Berg! I have been cultivating my kefir for 15 years and consuming it with my children. I didn't know about all that you said, know I realize the benefits!
Thanks, this is timely. Great content Doctor Berg 👏 👌 👍

All good. I hope that helps!
My sleep is perfect, thanks for everything Doc!
No problem. Stay safe and healthy!
Bro! This may just save my life! I have a serious imbalance of sleep that has me up all night and sleeping during the day, and it is SO difficult to reverse the sercadian rhythm once it's been programmed into the brain. Can you make content to help with my case? Or do you already have a video on sleep?
Been drinking kefir whole my life. We where getting it even in the kindergarden. Its pretty good to have on a hot day.
That's great. Thanks for sharing your story here.
Thank you, Dr. Berg, I’m going to try this👍🏼
Lovely, go for it.

I love you Dr Berg and I have respect for you as I do for my father
❤ from India
Aerobic and anaerobic, very good info. Thank you Dr. Berg, If been hooked on this stuff since the first video. I’ve been giving a TBS to my diabetic dog after her homemade meal at night. And her health has shifted miraculously. She also has hypo-thyroidism and her fur is LITERALLY growing back in the places it was weak, and falling out!❤❤❤
I would love to hear how do you feed your dog @michaeleccher4068.
My dog tends to prefer home made food and I am considering to make food for him exclusively at home
Thank you very much for your valuable information ♥👍👍
Glad that you liked this video. Thanks for watching!
Thanks doc for this trivia
I've been making and drinking Kefir everyday for years. I never heard of it helping your sleep. I usually have it as a dessert. Sometimes with strawberries, blueberries and raspberries blended in with a immersion hand blender with a tiny bit of Swerve added. I've never fermented it with a lid but used a paper towel held in place with a rubber band. I use a lid when it is in the refrigerator being stored until I make the next batch or to keep the previous batch fresh. I tried using raw milk and it gave me the most explosive diarrhea I've ever had and I've prepped for three colonoscopies in my life. Since then I don't experiment with any other type of milk than the highest quality pasteurized, homogenized (but not ultra) whole milk I can find.
Merci Dr Berg ❤
Most welcome!
Thank you for this take at least 1 cup a day for my stomach and sleep.
This is just what I needed to hear this morning.. thank you Dr. Berg. I’m going to buy Keifer today!!😊
Glad to help!
@@Drberg I am curious for people who are diabetic or cutting sugar out, if they should be buying plain kefir?
This vid definitely made for a good start to my morning as well 😊
This really helps doc. Thank you.😊
Great. Thanks for watching the video.
I honestly resisted kefir because I find it gross. But it’s something I’m willing to try. Thank you for your advice, always!
I don’t like drinking it plain however, I’ve been putting it in my spinach and banana, oatmeal with banana smoothies. It tastes like yogurt.
There is goat milk kefir at Trader's joe, it tastes less sour and no sugar
Add a little Cinnamon if you can.
@@letakeokuk5446I drank it a lot years ago...but it was just like yogurt...which was good and bad. Cause it tasted great and I Loved It. But I thought I remember it giving me the runs...with my lactose intolerance, so idk. We will see. I will try it out again then.
Try raw milk instead if you can access it in your area. Much tastier and does the same things.
Thank you Dr. Berg🏆👑
Sure!
thank you for this video. I'll try out kefir for a few weeks and see how it goes
I struggled with sleep for a long time, the last 4-5 days I have been consuming Kefir, and I fall asleep faster I feel less stressed, this stuff is amazing I feel less exhausted and more rested.
I just can't sleep and it's taking a toll, I will try this thankyou
My grandmother would always make a hot cup of chocolate milk as a kid when i would struggle with sleep, and it ALWAYS helped. Im 32 now and now i do teas, but once in a blue moon ill still make myself that hot choclatw milk. Bless her heart.
I can't do chocolate milk because of the caffeine. I'd be up all night ..you're lucky
Chocolate is not suppose t b taken at nite, stimulant😊
That's just hot chocolate my guy 😊
Thank you so much Dr.Berg DC ❤😂
You're welcome!
Love that information.❤
So glad you like it!
❤❤ Bless Your Heart Dr. Berg ❤
thanks for the information.
You're very welcome.
Dr. Berg, hope you'll do a nutritional comparison between Icelandic Skyr and Kefir. Thanks for your Educational Health Videos.
Just did this last night!!!! Bless you Dr. B!!!! Slept like a rock 😭🤍
You drink Hot kefir? Or cold kefir?
Thanks for the presentation and analysis. I train muay thai and run hills 90 degrees. I sleep when my head hits the pillow.
With my prostate, I consume keifer very sparingly
Thank you. And thanks for explaining how to drink kefir when intermittent fasting.
I will be trying this ❤ thanks Berg, hope your well :D
Great. Hope this will help you. Have a nice day!
Making your own kefir is so simple and cheap. There are tons of videos on TH-cam on how to make it. I've been making my own since the last video on it and I can attest to all the benefits Dr Berg states in this one. (I mix a tablespoon of nutritional yeast with some stevia in mine for added B vitamin and I think it's delicious) Thanks Doc!
Please share a link
Mary nest chan has how to make kefir: water kefir, cow/goat kefir, coconut kefir. she is excellent see her vids on raw sauerkraut and fremented veggies this is another way to add good bacteria to the gut see dr berg vids.
You are correct, It's great. I was making my own kefir, but I had to stop because it produces so much I can't consume it all. And altough I made kefir cheese with it, It became a waste. I wanted to give it away, but no one wanted it. It amazes me how uninformed most people are.
Thanks, it’s way too expensive to buy and consume daily. I have a yogurt maker I haven’t used in decades at the back of the closet think I will see if I can somehow incorporate it.
@@alert1006omg same here have been buying in store but used to make my own
Thanks Dr Berg!
Definitely!

Thank you I’m having troubles sleeping after hip surgery. I’m tired of waking up every hour and a half to go P and just restless
My mom would make what she called "Sweet Milk". She would warm some milk on the stove add a little Karo syrup to it. It was delicious and we went to sleep. As an adult, I found out it's good for constipation. I will definitely look into Kefir because I have insomnia and gut issues.
❤❤❤ Thanks alot dr Berg ❤❤

I've been drinking Kefir, I love the taste! I'll try it at night.
Good for you!
Glad I just started making a new batch of kefir
Just need to switch the time I use it

Nothing more mature and grown up than someone who can face and resist temptation because they know, understand, and actually value what they may have. It really says a lot about you as an individual. Your thought process.
I make my own raw milk kefir; thanks for the tip on covering it for more bacterial growth vs yeast - I'll try that today! Not only do I like it sour but I'm not as concerned about my yeast population as I am about bacterial.
Love from INDIA sir.....thnku so much
I started a new batch of raw milk kefir a few hours ago. It will be ready tomorrow. YUM!
Very good. Enjoy there.
@@Drberg I wish you could visit me in southern Albania. Most of what you teach is just common knowledge here. There are soooo many old healthy people here! I appreciate you making scientific sense of it for me.

Excellent information
I really appreciate you saying so!
Love the new background
Thanks. Glad you love it.
One of those outstanding foods! It's origin is in Russia, in fact in many rural parts of the nation mothers still use Kefir to help wean babies. Its actually pronounced keff-eer. With particular emphasis on the i sounding like long e's, and finishes with a hard R.
Dr. Berg, how about kefir coconut? Is it still the same benefit?
