2024 Ford Ranger vs VW Amarok - Which one should you buy?

- In the world of modern motoring, a model life of 10 years is an eternity. The Volkswagen Amarok arrived on the global scene over ten years ago and while it was initially derided for its small capacity 2.0-litre engine, over time it garnered respect and proved itself to be the real deal; a proper pick-up/bakkie that is now quite sought after on the used car market in South Africa.
However with the pivot to electric vehicles draining VW's R7D budgets, Volkswagen needed some help with the next generation Amarok if they were to keep the nameplate alive.
And so they turned to Ford, and now the global market has these twin bakkies to choose from, as under the skin the Amarok is identical to the Ford Ranger, employing the chassis and entire drivetrain from the Ranger. Interestingly, both cars are proudly South Africa, the Ford Ranger is built in the Ford Silverton plant outside Pretoria, which is the only place in the world where the new Amarok is manufactured.
In this video, the result of our team of journalists putting together a massive 6-bakkie shoot-out in 2023, we compare the 2.0 Amarok Style variant to the Ford Ranger XLT. While the Amarok does feature a bit more creature comforts, the reality is that it is over R100,000 more expensive than the Ranger, at least at list price.

I dont know anything about Bakkies but I would get the Amarok, just to be different. Everyone has a Ranger.
Excellent video guys, but I especially wanted to compliment you on the two inserts, first where you jumped back to the drag race footage and second where Ciro gave his closing thoughts as a voiceover. Those added a really professional, classy touch to the whole presentation and it's on trend with what the other motoring channels are doing overseas. I really liked it a lot, and I hope this encourages you to keep doing it in future.
Colleague went with the head and chose the VCross Isuzu citing the Ranger’s bulk, fuel consumption, insurance etc but you can still see the pain in his eyes; the reality of life especially in SA😞

Very soon VW will have to consider shelving the Amarok altogether. The sales are just not promising, because of unnecessarily high prices. The story of the X-Class is about to repeat itself.
Amarok was never a volume seller, they could shelved it already, instead they went for the Ford partnership in order to lower production and research costs.. it’s different to the X class story, Mercedes went really cheap and basically took the navara as it is, and slapped Mercedes badge on it..
I don't know about that. I see plenty of Amarok's on the roads. Not as many as Ranger's but probably the 3rd most after Ranger and Hilux. Mitsubishi and Isuzu have fell behind alot.
@@sheeshman9713 not entirely true. Amarok only managed to sell 222 units in January. Also, D-Max sells way better than Amarok, having achieved 1336 units last month. Triton and B-T50 are way lower, in fact the worst. But I do get your point. I personally was expecting better Amarok sales.
@@vuyaniman9440 I agree that Amarok is not a volume seller, I was expecting a bit more sales still, say maybe 500 or more. I don't see how the X Class project is different from the Amarok project, except the fact that the X Class was a completely new introduction to the market, which potential buyers were unsure of.

The VW has longer warranty, comes with a maintenance plan etc. The R100k difference actually covers those

Wil it be possible to test the following bakkies on lower en of the scale
Isuzu Dmax 1.9 single cab, Ford Ranger 2.0 single cab, GWM P series single cab.
The aim of test would be to prove if a smaller diesel engine be able to work on farming will full load at the back.
Also test bakkies with load to drive up an hill.
We are used to big engine can easily carry 1 to with ease.
Shot for another excellent, balanced and rational review. For my part, I'm going to drive my previous gen 'Rok until the wheels fall off. Well hopefully they won't. VW is madly overpriced!
What are the extra features in the Amarok that are not in the Ranger? You only mention heated and electric seats, what else is there?
Any dust issues in the cabin while driving on gravel on these 2 bakkies?
The sheer size of the ranger raises practicality issues for urban life, such a beautiful car; would choose it all day honestly especially the Wiltrak but my word it is such a large car

A friend of mine has a single cab P. For work. And has stopped needing to pull a trailer behind him as the bed has enough space for all his tools and shit.
With all that being said. I saw an old Hilux today. Late 80s model it looked small next to my Suzuki hatchback
@@nedyahyakcam It all depends on priorities. My four door pickups are mainly work trucks and tools and stuff mostly inhabits the rear seats in the relatively secure and dry environment. I did have an earlier King Cab [cab and a half] with a foot longer bed and did worry about the reduced length but I’ve honesty not regretted the full cab and its interior roominess one bit. Just today one of my Rangers had a welder and gear in the back seat and a ton pallet of fine sawdust in compressed bags in the back. This was a standard one ton pallet size [4’X4” I think] stacked six feet high and shrink wrapped, tied down with a commercial load strap [a variety of which are permanent residents of the second row when not used]. Sometimes it also tows a 14’X6’ dropside trailer behind as well with up to 2 tons aboard if the pickup bed is fully loaded, or up to 2.5 tons otherwise [pushing the limits somewhat but that is what is regular duty for these pickups]. Too big? Not really. For many people, yes, but there are alternative commercial vehicles available of all sorts. The Ssangyong short bed is becoming popular around here for its low loading height and sides. Lots and lots of blind vans of course, where paved roads are almost exclusively driven and two rows of seats in vans have become popular in recent years, especially Transit, VW, Fiat, Renault, Peugeot,Citroen, Mercedes and MAN. These are available in many sizes and configurations, even some 4wd with high clearance.

There are many meaningful differences from suspension tune to software and It is my view after doing months of due diligence that you're either being intentionally obtuse or lack a comprehensive understanding of the differences between the two and EVERY SINGLE reviewer from across every country in which they sell would agree with my assessment, other of course, than yourself as a standalone.
No sub here on the grounds that I must, therefore, conclude by broadly doubting your understanding of the class.

The VW tested has the superior electronic shifter and probably the superior 4A 4wd on road type transfer box. These alone explain and indeed justify the price difference between these particular examples

Have you considered buying the maintenance plan and the ford packs? Ford is expensive after you add the pack and service /maintenance plan
Guys amarok style it compete with ranger wildtrak. XLT it compete with XLT im sure chiro made mistakes and is very necessary for him to revisit his statement

If you want to drive to some dream destinations, then both of these will do. But if you want to drive back in one piece, get the D-Max.
I hope VW has gone extra mile to improve the vehicle security of Amarok. Rangers are getting carjacked or stolen so easily which for me is bit of a concern.

I'm a Hilux fan but Ford has a jewel in the Ranger. Without a doubt, the new segment leader.
If I was in the bakkie market I would get the P Series, its cheaper and has a bigger tub(you know the reason youre supposed to get one of these). Yeah its down on power but Im not getting it to drag race, im getting it to haul stuff.
So are the Amarok body spares made by VW Germany, VW Uitenhage, Ford USA or Ford SA?
Ford SA is the only Amarok production site in the world, so spares will also be produced on the same production lines.

Ford ranger more easily to replace repair and maintenance compare to Volkswagen amarok but i prefer Mitsubishi Triton is the best very affordable cost but intelligent engineering futuristic

Previous Ranger welldone bakkies drive them as K9 mv in SAPS the best ever one was Clubcab 2.5 TDI 4x2. Great stuff unfortunately after 300000km mother nature take a good chance wheel burst on way to farm attack and our "lovely gravel " roads and over turned. No injuries to myself and K9 partner. Settle for next best bakkie for gravel Nissan NP300 s/c 4x4 ...... yes could take a new Hilux .....that hates gravel roads , as a comm give it to some other memb who likes Hilux. For info I retired last year Nissan currently 155000km and 2.7i Hilux just over 320000 km includes complete enjine overhaul on 1400000.
The clone ranger would be on my list if.
It had the VW V6 TDI instead of the Lion derived V6 with its suspect 3 main bearing glass crank.
If it had the 8sp ZF auto box.
The ranger tub.
A less ostentatious gear selector and knobs not onscreen ajusters.

And the price of a Triton.
Four mains and reason for failure, which was many should be sorted, but change your oil regularly.

Pity they dropped the ZF in the Amarok. That Ford box is horrible. Why do you need 10 gears in a vehicle that size and weight?
As an owner of multiple ZF 6 and 8 speed transmission in vehicles over the years and a Ford Ranger 2023 Wildtrak, I can honestly say that the Ford gearbox is superb and even better than the ZF. Its changes and mapping are perfect and it holds gears to utilise engine torque superbly. I’ve also a six speed Ford auto in an older Ranger, which is basically a license built ZF HP-6, and the 10 speed is in a totally different and superior league. Long term reliability of this second generation 10 speed has yet to be proven. The six speed on mine, used for farm work and regular towing of 7700lbs and more has certainly been totally reliable over its current 90,000 miles.

@@yissibiiyte Yeah... Of all the "big name" brands in the bakkie world, it has the worst payload carrying ability, trailing the nearest competitor by more than 300kg. And let's not even talk about how cramped and claustrophobic it gets inside the cabin. Along with a terrible ride quality, copied over to the Fortuner.

I don't fully agree that VW made enough of a difference on the interior, especially the Dash... I feel VW should have installed their Tuareg dash. Of course, that would not work with the Ford Computers but then they should have at least designed a "Ford" compatible Dashboard that looks and feels like a Tuareg Dashboard! That's my honest opinion. If feel, that would have given the Amarok that final distinction that it is missing.

@@atulemoyake3924 The X-Class had all the extra work put into it over the Navara that VW has done with the Amarok over the Ranger. They redid the suspension, strengthened the chassis and focused on reducing NVH. They also gave it a different interior and changed the bodywork. It rode and drove so much better than the Navara. It was also sold by the Mercedes-Benz Vans division so it wouldn't get mixed in with the regular Mercedes-Benz cars. If someone was shopping for a Benz car they weren't going to be cross shopping it against the X-Class so there was never any confusion there. The reason it didn't sell was because everyone found out it was based on a Navara. But here is VW doing the same thing with the Amarok and even charging similar money to what Mercedes-Benz did with the X-Class. I guess people have short memories.

And cue all the Toyota haters, Resale / Unbeaten reliability / does what it says on the tin , thats why theres a hilux cult following, Dont cry when your Amaroks electronics give up and you in for 100k or when your fords fancy 10 speed gearbox or diff blows up or burns a hole in a piston, the list goes on.. both about as reliable as a nigerian bank account when the warranty is up, Ill take my GD6 all day vs these dressed up yuppie rides

..the 2.0 biturbo and 3.0 V6 TDI was first introduced to the bakkie market by VW before FORD...Ranger was using 2.2 and 3.2 Diesel engines .so i think both brands helped each other to achieve this perfect project.

Toyota and ford period..both .but in the karoo on the R355 I did record time to tankwa at 140 at times nice and smooth...the Toyota at that speed with the same GRABBERS AT3 was not as stable at that speed on the R355 could be fords better AIRO DIYNIMICS .through die hel i find THE TOYOYA BETTER TO HANDLE 😅. BUT unfortunately ford is my first choice......plain and simple for some reason ford can take more PAK..
