    Alyssa, I think that wooden top is actually a weight from a "plumb line" before levels were invented Carpenters used Plumb lines to check that walls were "Plumb" or straight and not leaning to one side. The idea is to take a piece of wood, attach it to the wall parallel with the top of the wall, hang a string with a weight that was pointed on one end, and see if it hung straight down (indicating a level wall) or hung off-center indicating a cant or lean in the wall. Great find nonetheless, wooden plumb levels were used for centuries and even today some traditional craftsmen still use metal weighted Plumb levels shaped exactly like your wooden top there.

    not sure if anyone mentioned this already, the porcelain tube you found is in fact an insulator for "knob and tube" wiring. used mostly from the 1880s to 1940s in the US. this video was fun, keep exploring the home and property.

  • @pnatwick
    @pnatwick ปีที่แล้ว +4

    At 16:58 it looks like a ceramic insulator for the old ‘knob and tube’ wiring. To get a wire through a stud or joist, a hole would be drilled in the wood and on of those insulators inserted so a bare wire could be fed through it.
    Also, it looks like the area had been previously “discovered” by someone who had insulated the underfloor.

  • @scottlandgreen5620
    @scottlandgreen5620 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The porcelain tube at time stamp 16:57 is part of the original electrical wiring of the house. The wire ran thru the tube which insulated it from a wall stud or floor joist, etc.

    LOL😂 great storytelling !
    It’s just a crawl space for plumbing and ductwork.
    I also see someone has recently braced and straightened up the floor with all the bracing.
    In order to get to the addition they had to make a hole through the old foundation.
    But saying that my grandfather owned a corner store in a small town about 15 minutes from where we live now. My mother always told us about going through a hole in the floor to a dirt dug out basement. They used to dig and find tons of items and bring them up to their dad. While they were digging they got to a wooden box and broke off the corner of it….a bunch of hair popped out from it ! They ran up screaming and their dad went down to see. He buried the corner of the box and they were told to never go down again so they never did. This was 60 years ago….well about 5 years ago my wife and I were driving by the store which still exists and I mentioned the story to them and they were curious about the basement but had heard a few rumours about the basement and had never checked it out. Once I told them the story they said now for sure we aren’t going down there !
    We are in a old coal mining community so back then people were just buried so you never know ??

    • @lorihumphry6379

    The porcelain tube would run thru the wall stud, and the wire ran thru the center of the tube insulating the wire from the wood via the porcelain.

    Hi Alyssa, so okay 1st I'd get an inspection of your foundation in that crawl space. Just to be safe so that rock wall with the small hole isn't a Load Bearing Rock Wall that holds up your cottage!!! I'd feel alot better if you did that first before you go down there again & explore for treasures!!!

    17:10 This must be the month for finding Christofle knife rests (boules motif) I just stumbled upon some about 3 wks ago. I think some are silver-plated perhaps others may be silver. Given the footings work & plastic moisture barriers it looks like work has been done there in fairly recent years so some treasures may have already been unearthed. Make sure you seal up those critter access points with some hardware cloth because they can mess with electrical wires and create a fire hazard. They like to return in mating seasons. Also, yes, to masks rodent dung can be toxic. Fun video cool that you brought a metal detector! Maybe get an endoscope, Tyvec coveralls with 1/4 wetsuit w/ hoodie underneath to pad the head, elbows & knees and help protect from snake/spider bites for your next foray. Thx for the cool video!

    Great video & how exciting it will be to discover more about it! I live in Colorado in the mountains & there is so much history in the older homes especially in the more rural areas & considering what was going on at the time. I'd do some research on the house starting by going to the assessors office in your county. That should lead you to the Clerk & Recorders office where you can look up to find out who owned the house when. They have these huge books that often have the original deed in them. Then I'd check the local paper archives & see if there's any info on the owners and/or the house. It's amazing what one can discover. I can't wait to see more on this!

    The spirt level 1950s to 1970s, first thing that went through my head with the trap door and tunnel arch was Bootleggers hideout, then it slowly went to work being done under the house to replace rotten wood and repair support walls.
    Suggestion put a hole or gain entry from outside to under the house and put an extractor fan at the entrance, another good bit of equipment would be a venturi pump you could use it to suck up dust and small bits of grit and blow it outside the house

The tubes go into studs,rafters and joists to thread the wires in enclosed walls,attics, ceilings and floors. Must drill holes to insert the tubes and fish wire through.

    What you are calling the old top, I think is a spinning dice. See if you can find any numbers or symbols on each side. It could also possible be a dreidel. And the tube item you are calling porcelain I think is a ceramic wire insulator. Early in the days of electricity, a hole would be drilled in a wall and one of those tubes inserted in it and then the house wiring would go through it so it would insulate the walls from the electricity.

    Someone has probably mentioned this already here, but the porcelain tube is a conductor from knob and tube wiring. That’s how they wired house is 100 years ago wires came wrapped in cloth and they were fed through porcelain tubes. I noticed under the house, new lumber posts they don’t look like they’re treated to resist termites. I don’t know what termites are like where you are but you might consider putting treated lumber or a cement footing under them. Subterranean termites can eat your house up fairly quickly.

      Termites are unlikely to be much of a problem where she is since it stays frozen 6 months out of the year but yes if they found they would make quick work of any untreated wood.

    What that is, is a where you had to have a termite inspection and the state plant bores requires there to be certain amount of space for future treatments if needed. The plastic is a vapor barrier that’s sometimes required!!! IMO

    Living in my van since 1982, I've got two Garrett metal detectors for whenever I'm in the right areas. Yup I've found gold, silver, but my favorite is the old coins I find. You would be surprised with what you might find going around your house outside. Anyway glad no monsters got you or Bart. You have a great wonderful time and the very best for you and your pup's. Peace out

    I believe the numbers a metal detector shows tell you how strong a response it's getting, which in turn can tell you what metal the object is made of.

    Alyssa sweetie, ya'll be very careful about what rocks you try to move in the foundation. Having rebuilt a house built in 1854-6, I can assure you that hand laid rock foundations were often times not structurally sound. As far as your finds go, the level appears to be post WW2 model (1947-55) since earlier levels were mostly wood. The piece Bart found might actually be the end cap for a 1920's curtain rod. Heavy curtains were hung on 1 1/2" dowels and a cap like that was screwed on the end of the dowel to keep the curtain from sliding off. And lastly, the thing that looks like a stretched out jack could be a spool for a darning wheel. (Not 100% on that one though) Anyway, stay safe and I would highly recommend some coveralls for future explorations. As always, BIG HUGS and lots of ❤ from Tennessee!

    The porcelain is an insulator. A tube is used in knob and tube wiring to allow the wires to go through a wooden beam

    You should test for Radon with a dirt floor basement like that. It's a problem here in Colorado.

    Food for thought. Watching the story about the secret passage, it reminded me of the time I was house shopping up in Maine. The House was nice in and outside but the realtor wanted to show the "crawl" space underneath, which you got in from an outside door. The ground was dirt like yours but the beams and flooring overhead were not insulated. That concerned me so upon going back inside I noticed a wavy feel walking the hardwood floors. I believe they were warped. It's up to you, check the plastic hanging down to see what's in there. I love your philosophy, sense of adventure and courage. say Hi to the boys (your dogs), be safe and be well. Many happy thoughts and wishes RB
