Michael Jordan (Age 38) shuts down Vince Carter - 0 pts in 2nd half

  • Vince started off hot, dropping 19 in the first quarter. But then Jordan figured out Vince, and held him to 0 points and 4 total shot attempts in the 2nd half. His off-ball D was a huge part of limiting Vince's opportunities
    In 2001/02, Vince averaged 25.8 ppg on 43% through 48 games before an injury against the Spurs, and had averaged 30-6-6-2-2 on 47% against the Sixers Top 5 Defense in the 2001 ECSF.

    I was at this game and it was fucking incredible. Vince thought he was nice and was talking a bit by the end of the half and then you could see MJ just change his mindset and switch to Vince. He was being physical, talking to him and VC hated every moment of it. This is why Wince wasn't a winner in the NBA, he wanted to be friends but when real adversity hit and a guy really dug in against him, he couldn't deal.
    This was vintage and this is the difference between MJ and everyone else.

    • @theroseexperience
      @theroseexperience 8 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      +TheRoseExperience The shape MJ was in at age 38-40 was crazy too. He was still relentless and could guard opposing superstars for meaningful stretches. His footwork is godlike, easily the best the game has ever seen.

    • @theroseexperience
      @theroseexperience 8 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      +TheRoseExperience Come winning time Vince didn't do it and that's what MJ told him going into the second half. It's easy to do it for 2 quarters, but keeping that up year after year, and finishing is entirely different. MJ knows this and that's why he was telling him, 48 minute game young blood.

    • @jumpnam
      @jumpnam 8 ปีที่แล้ว +49

      Absolutely man. Jordan was a relentless predator, almost psychotic in his desire to not only win, but to beat you down and destroy you. Vince here got a taste of the nightmare Jordan's opponents faced in his prime. That pathological competitive fury is the single greatest element that separates Jordan from any player since. Kobe is the only one that comes within a light year of him.

    • @mikesannitti6042

      +TheRoseExperience Don't hate on Vince too much, he's just one of many great players that Jordan could torture. But Vince has thrived against adversity in his career, just see how many times he killed the Raptors as a Net with all of Canada booing him every time he touched the ball. Looka t the number of game typing aand game winning shot's he's made. VC is far from a weak player but Jordan is just another level.

    This was such a bizarre time in NBA history. Olajuwon on the Raptors, Ewing in Seattle, Pippen on the TrailBlazers, and MJ on the Wizards. Whenever I feel nostalgic and feel like playing NBA Live 03, I put em all on one team.

      vinosakti I feel that Malone's choice to go the Lakers wasn't as buzzare as the others. He was the "Last of the Mohicans." Olajuwon, Ewing, MJ were retired by 03-04. Pippen was irrelevant. Malone was still a force to be reckoned with unlike the others. He remained consistent throughout his career.

      very few ppl appreciate that MJ hated getting a free ride....won the all-star MVP after his first come-back when Shaq should have won...and he acknowledged when he accepted the trophy, openly accepts he lost the dunk comp to Nique,...if he aint ear it...he don't want it.....

    For you kids who think LeBron has "it".... Trust me when I tell you from 1991 - 1997 EVERY REGULAR season Bulls game was sold out -and it was on National TV (WGN-Sports) EVERY GAME, a MUST see, Monday night , Tuesday night - didn't matter. Why? Because MJ played every game like it was his last... That's the Truth. I miss those days, he inspired me to do what ever I was doing the best I could. MJ ALWAYS TOOK the game winning SHOT - or at least the last shot that sealed the deal - ALWAYS. And it usually was nothing but net. Even on his "off" nights he would keep fighting until he found his shot... Never any excuses - never any suites after the game - would go to press conferences in his jersey sweating... Already thinking about the next game... HE WAS THE BEST

    • @cheyheyway6244
      @cheyheyway6244 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He just took a bunch of shots in the expansion era. He sometimes had years when he took 800 more shots then any other player and had a much worst fg%.
      His team was very good without him virtually having the same exact record as before he was there. Lebron’s Heat team didn’t make playoffs when he left. The Cavs went from the best to worst teams in the league both times he left.
      Lebron proved that he was the deciding force in making a team great wherever he went a Finals team was formed. Jordan on the other hand was apart of a well oiled machine.

The Bulls were not good without Scottie and the greatest NBA coach of all time. Jordan played on teams with 4-5 hall of famers against teams with 1 or later on 2. The Bulls were successful without Jordan look what they did the year directly after he left. Lebron on the other hand turns teams that are not good into contenders. Lebron was much more important for his teams success as compared to Jordan.

    • @twilitezn
      @twilitezn 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@cheyheyway6244 Those teams had a lot of contexts after Lebron left them :
      Miami : Wade was in his decline and was plagued by Hamstring injuries that year - commentators mentioned that at times it looked like he was playing on one leg - and Bosh played less than half the season because of blood clots which ultimately ended his career.
      Cleveland : Kyrie left the season before Lebron did and they only had Kevin Love and a bunch of scrubs left.
      So it wasn't like either of those teams were in pristine condition : there wasn't a prime, uninjured HOFer left who could carry their team. If Wade was at his best he would have easily dragged the Heat to a Top 6 seed. He was basically playing injured for the last 4-5 years of his career and he's STILL ranked (@30) above Pippen. Uninjured he's EASILY Top 12-20. Pippen was great but he wasn't a Franchise Player.

    I think some people doesn't realize how impressive MJ shut down vince in the second half. Vince is full of confidence and hot after scoring 23 most points on MJ in the first half. Just clamped down in the post or scared him off when he tried to drive and was forced into bad shots. And he was like 2 for 20 or 30 that whole game. Not even durant could bail em out.

    All these people saying "MJ allowed Carter to score 23 points in the first half and then decide that he won't score again and that's it" make me laugh. Carter started an excellent game and Jordan was defending, he wasn't allowing him to score so easily but being a great player who started in good shape Carter managed to score 23 points. Then he lost it and Jordan continued to defend and you can't score when you're not in your game and Jordan is defending well. I'm not saying that Jordan has no kind of responsability for Carter not scoring in the second half but you have to admit that a part of it is due to the fact that Carter did not show his best in the second half

  • @ForeverFlame88
    @ForeverFlame88 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    From age 32 to 40 Jordan played in 473 games. He scored 12,888 pts for an average of 27.2 points per game and won three NBA titles with three Finals MVPs, two regular season MVPs, and three scoring titles in only five full seasons. At an old age, Jordan shot 46.3% from the field.
    At age 31, Kobe averaged 27 pts (less than Jordan from age 32-40) and has shot for his career 45.5% from the field (less than Jordan from age 32-40)
    Even if Jordan had ONLY played from age 32-40, he'd be the greatest single individual talent of all time.

    whooooooa whoooooa, there is only one person that can have Air in front of their name and it's not 1/2 Man. 1/2 Amazing, His Airness MJ, Vincent you shouldn't of said you don't care who guards you during halftime interview, you should of known better and anticipated Michael making adjustments and you should of been ready for what Black Jesus was gonna do to you in the 2nd half. This is just one reason about why i claim that Kobe is the only player that has come somewhat close to MJ. I wanna say it was during the 1997 Bulls v Lakers game where Kobe had asked Jordan about how he when he turns around for a jump shot how can he clear the defense and Jordan had told him to feel the defense with his legs and once he felt the defense with his legs he then could take advantage. Vince and every other player that ever played with and against Jordan should of taken advantage of the 48 min that they had with him on the court and asked questions to get the answers that no coach could ever teach them, but Vince didn't have the same drive like Kobe. Didn't the late great Coach Smith tell Vince stories about Michael, anyways this is a classic and thanks NTJ and yes i agree that nobody touches Jordan or even tries to reach towards him, lol
