  • An excerpt from the Wizards Jordan documentary. Jordan had shut down Sprewell a week earlier
    (12-14-2001), and shut him down even worse in the MSG rematch (12-22-01)
    Sprewell'ss coring tailed off at the end of the 2001/02 season (19.4 ppg on 40%), but at the time of both games that Jordan shut him down, Spree was averaging 20.7 ppg on 44%. Sprewell also averaged 26 ppg against the Duncan/Robinson Spurs in the 1999 Finals

    To be fair, Spree missed a lot of open shots, compound that with good defence by Jordan, he had a shocking game. Sprewell a very underrated player and if there was no Jordan games, I always look forward to watching Spree.

      +MrYoumitube ...i watched first two minutes...You r right ..title is misleading. Spree just did not hit open jumpers ..and MJ defense has nothing to do with it... But...I am fan of MJ so I assume that when Mike is on the court then hitting open jumpers is tougher then in any other game. :)

      +kacper pawlowski exactly, and that is why his defense HAS something to do with it. it's mental. you could clearly see mj purposely sagging off spree, begging him to shoot a wide open j, that he indeed misses. All mental my friend, that's part of the reality as much as physical presence ;)

    What did Spree say or do to him? Part of playing defense is taking your man off their game, both physically and mentally. Spree aint one to fuck with, he doesn't back down. MJ really took him out mentally in this one. Also notice how MJ switches off and disrupts not just the man he's playing but the other players as well. Constantly making people lift their dribble, force a shot, make a pass. He denies and forces player out of their comfort zone. Why is Spree taking so many 3s? MJ is forcing him to do so.

    • @andgar923
      @andgar923 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      4:34 the play is to run Spree off multiple screens to get him a good look either a curl to get an open J or a good post up shot. MJ hounds him, goes over the screen, prevents Spree from getting the ball not once but twice, cuts off angles and forces them to pass somewhere else. That alone is a win he took away their 1st option. But he's not done. He then steps into the lane to force the driving player into a bad rushed shot. He does this multiple times throughout the game, not just this game but his entire career. MJ does so much defensively that goes unnoticed. It's a beautiful work of art once you know what to look for. His instincts and IQ are off the charts. Sure, he'll get beat from time to time but that's part of the game when you're a defender. You're gonna get beat because you dare to be active and take chances. Whereas some players are literally pushed to play defense.

    Loool i dont understand how those young stars didnt take the opportunity in 2001-03 to dominate an old MJ and get some good highlights and build up their confidence. Sure Mj wasnt gonna back down and he had all the tricks, but seeing those guys get intimidated and get shut down by an old ass Mj is just embarrassing. Tmac, Pierce, Vince..... what the hell were those guys thinking? That this league was suddenly theirs without beating the old lion?
    Cmon son. Those mfs were softer than charmin. I guarantee you Mj didnt respect them. Watch some Vc game from this Mj Wizards era, deflecting Mj questions like he is annoyed, yet you know how deep down he fears Mj tearing him a new asshole and shutting him down defensively, and guess what, thats exactly what happens.
    Luckily for all these guys Mj couldnt really drag the Wizards to playoffs because then he would REALLY tap that ass and let those self doubt demons sneak up on fools.
    Only Kobe ofc lit up Mj in those years and sent his old ass into retirement with a 55-point game lol

    • @moeschizlac
      @moeschizlac ปีที่แล้ว

      Iverson lit him up too every time the 76ers played those Wizards. The last game MJ played before he retired from the Wizards was the 76ers. One thing I disagree with is young folks saying Jordan couldn't score as easily on zone defense. They don't know Jordan played against zones during his Wizards years. Zone defense was added during the 2001-02 NBA season. The only player I remember having trouble beating it that year was T-Mac.

    • @amare1cro
      @amare1cro ปีที่แล้ว

      @@moeschizlac I dont recall MJ really guarding AI in those two seasons, that would be foolish, AI was too quick. There would be a lot of highlights and crossovers and MJ wouldnt like his legacy to suffer by being repeatedly broken off the dribble by Allen.
      He was killing Spreewell, Vince, Tmac, Pierce.... all the supposed stars but they would get intimidated and blown up by old ass MJ.
      Even Dillon dumass Brooks is shooting 3s in old ass Lebron face so you can kinda see the difference here, Lebron is still good at 39-40 but he aint shutting anybody down or scoring in heaps (except occasionally). Aaron Gordon can hold him down.

  • @matthewdavidsonhomes
    @matthewdavidsonhomes 8 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    misleading. MJ doesn't shut down Latrell Sprewell. Sprewell misses all of the uncontested shots with Jordan 5 feet away.

    • @AZNboi10921
      @AZNboi10921 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Basketball is also a mental game. Jordan was probably trash talking the kid throughout, daring him to take the open jumpshots adding more pressure. That's why he's able to shut down a lot of scorers... and only a few people aren't fazed by that type of trash talk from MJ or anyone in general like Kobe, Paul Pierce, McGrady, etc.

Mind you playing good defense doesn't necessarily mean you always have to be up on the player it's a psychological things you made do to him on other please to where he's thinking about his shot even when he's open as opposed to just letting it flow naturally..
