Michael Jordan 1987: Full Dunk Contest

  • I'm glad that TH-cam gave my channel back to me and with this upload, I am back to getting up as many new videos as I can. This channel will never be taken for granted again and I thank everyone's great support during the furlough.
    My backup channel, "Hoopsencyclopedia23" will remain up as a backup in case this happens again.
    Anyway, this 1987 dunk contest edit pretty much captures every dunk in the contest. The setup and rules back then were perfect which each player only allowed just 2 misses before disqualification. It allowed for a lot more suspense and less, "throw-the-ball" dunks which ruin suspense with repeated attempts as today. This contest is famous so there's not much to say except that the stunning quality of this VHS tape has held up pretty well for the past 23 years.

    look at the air
    look at the hangtime
    look at the flying motion!
    look at his head above the rim!
    ICONIC!

      It's statuesque. There's beauty. It can be captured in slow motion like a god. It's what made us think about the game and appreciate it growing up. It made the game demand more from us. I loved that. That was everything and it was fun.

    There might be people that jump higher than Jordan, might be more explosive, and can do more tricks in the air, but no one will ever look as beautiful while in the air. It literally looks like he is flying. Jordan is an artist and the air is his canvas

      There was nobody in his time that could jump higher. Jordan was the only player in the league with a 40 inch vert. The thing that makes Jordan so unique is the uncanny body control he possesses. To me he is the greatest "jumper" and "glider" of all the time. While Vince Carter focuses on flash and fiery finishes, Jordan goes up and hangs in the air and makes subtle adjustments to completion. Simply the GOAT

    MJ's dunk where he takes off right outside the lane, almost gets parallel to the court, in a flying motion, was breathtaking...to me, the best slam dunk in competition, until Vince Carter in 2000. Also, his free throw line dunk is iconic- the best one ever from the line, one hand- double clutch

  • @hushg2000
    @hushg2000 12 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Jordan the greatest dunker of all time in my book... Why people ask? Because his dunks in the air defined ART... As soon as you saw it in slow motion, the ART revealed itself! ... No one has yet come close to this type of ballet & astronomical art on AIR..... Simply beautiful!!

    Jordan's 1987 dunk contest will always be my favorite. The slow motion from each of MJ's dunks look like he's flying and I cannot say that about any other player in Basketball then and even today's players. I'm not saying other dunkers dont have skills but they don't look as if they are walking on air like MJ does.

  • @JCR1992
    @JCR1992 13 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    This was my favorite of the 3 dunk contests MJ was in. The double clutch at the free throw is remarkable, and of course the kiss the rim dunk there aren't enough words to describe that. Also, I always thought MJ should of the 85 dunk contest maybe I'm just bias but I always thought Dominique's dunk were very similar and lacked the style grace and creativity Jordan's dunks had. I know Wilkins was a power dunker but he still could of been more creative. Thats just my opinion.

    Am I the only one who thinks Jerome Kersey's Dunk at 8:47 is pretty good. Almost a double windmill slam? Also although everyone likes Jordan's Leaner and Free Throw line dunk, I think his best was his 180 windmill from the dotted line that he did in '85 where he spun the ball around and dunked it behind his head.

    To be honest, MJ was lucky to have made it past the first round. I think he knew he had to step it up which is why his 3rd dunk was from the free throw line.

    • @jocosu_5649
      @jocosu_5649 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      MJ's dunks were just a simple dunk wherein all NBA players can do the same. No difficulty, no impact and poor choreography, in short it's boring. Honestly, he can't survive when compared to only LBJ's Tomahawk windmill dunk. Only LBJ can do the best Tomahawk windmill dunk while in the regulation game.

    • @cooljjjj
      @cooljjjj 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@jocosu_5649Jordan has had plenty of in-game tomahawk dunks. And it's unfair to compare the modern era to something that was still fairly new. Besides, if it weren't for Jordan, Wilkins' and Vince Carter's creativity, you wouldn't see the type of dunks that players do today.

    Look at the air, look at the hang-time, look at the flying motion!
    MJ is the platinum standard of the NBA. I miss the 90's of the NBA.
    Lebron is good and bound for greatness, but as an all-round player of just shear determination and flat-out win at all costs mentality... Jordan will not be eclipsed fir a very long time.

    Mike's first dunk (I call it his "Nike dunk") was awesome. Yet the judges curiously gave him only a 41. They covered their tracks on his second dunk by giving it a better score than it deserved. But the other guys were all using their best dunks in the first round, while Mike was saving his best stuff for later, as he always did.
